      I completely agree. I also find it weird that they put 1940-1950s musicals and 1960s musicals on the same list. In my opinion, 1940s-1950s musicals are quite different, in many ways, from 1960s musicals.

    1940-1970 is a pretty generous window for Golden Age musicals. Most theatre historians cut the Golden Age off somewhere around the mid-60's. Definitely before Hair, which sparked its own era of musical theatre into the 70's/early 80's.

    Here’s the thing. Cabaret and Hair are technically not Golden Age musicals. While they did come out during the 1940s-1970, Cabaret actually marked the start of a new era of musicals called the “Dark Age” musical. These were subversive “counter-culture” shows. The subject matter tended to be a lot more controversial and shocking in Dark Age musicals compared to the subject matter in the shows of the Golden Age. For example, Cabaret portrayed subjects such as abortion, prostitution, antisemitism, and, in the film and later productions, homosexuality. Hair dealt with recreational drug use, sexual freedom, mixed race couples, and nudity. In Golden Age musicals, those topics/themes would not pass. Just a fun tidbit of info.

    • @turkeyqueem280
      @turkeyqueem280 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      “Dark Age” doesn’t mean the musicals weren’t successful. It means that they were thematically darker.

    Kiss me Kate is one of my favorites. Very funny story and classic songs. One lesser known musicals from that period is Brigadoon. It was my the same men who wrote My Fair Lady and Camelot. It’s about a Scottish town that only appears every 100 years. An American finds in by accident and falls in love with one of the villagers. It has romance and fantasy and beautiful music. It was made into a movie on the ‘50’s with Gene Kelly. Worth checking out.

    • @jspaingreene6350
      @jspaingreene6350 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree about Kiss Me Kate! Sadly, I was never a big fan of Brigadoon. Based on what you said, I'm going to give it another try. I find this list strange - because if they're focusing on Broadway, they shouldn't use the film adaptions for footage only. It's confusing. My argument is - if something like Cats was on this list, you wouldn't use the recent film's footage for an example.
      I had to read through the description to understand why something like Easter Parade or In the Good Old Summertime aren't on the list....let alone Wizard of Oz. I also love Silk Stockings very much. Fun to talk to other Musical Lovers!! Take Care!!

    South Pacific is often considered the greatest American musical. It doesn't have a single bad song and successfully integrates jazz and melodic (European) music traditions. Bernstein looked toward it when writing the music of West Side Story.

Imagine my disappointment, years later, when I found out both lead characters' singing voices were _dubbed!_ Here I'd always thought, "It's amazing what good voices Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer have!" only to find Marni Nixon and Jimmy Bryant did the actual singing---without credit. And "Cabaret" was excellent and daring ("If You Could See Her" had me almost rolling on the floor the first time I saw it).

      Those were both movie musicals. Not Broadway musicals. Seven Brides was eventually adapted for the stage in the 1980s and only lasted on Broadway for 5 performances in 1982. Not during the golden age of the Broadway musical as described here (1940 - 1970).

    While I don't agree with all of your top ten, you did mention a number of those that I would have preferred in your honorable mention section. But there were several that were not mentioned at all: Oliver!, Brigadoon, How to Succeed in Business, Camelot, Mame, The Music Man, 1776.

    MUSIC MAN. One test would have to be how many times the show has been revived. While FIDDLER is an appropriate choice for first, MUSIC MAN has spawned more revivals and a second (made-for-TV) movie. CLEARLY it belongs on the list with a number. It DID win the Tony over West Side Story. Interestingly, FIDDLER is running NOW (I think) in a Yiddish version off-Broadway, and both WEST SIDE STORY and MUSIC MAN are due back on Broadway in the next two seasons (along with a new movie version of WEST SIDE STORY, directed by Steven Spielberg, in the works).

    If we're including the decade of the 70s there is no way "A Chorus Line" cannot be in the top three, if not number 1.
