Keeps talking about how inspirational and optimistic "I Dreamed A Dream" is. Girl, the last line is "Now, life has killed the dream I dream." Did you guys at Mojo even listen to these lyrics or learn the context??
I understand why Memory got #1, even if Cats isn’t the best musical, Memory pretty much is one of the most iconic Broadway songs of all time, probably right up there with One Day More, On My Own, Music Of The Night, Seasons Of Love, etc.
+Mark Kittel All that Jazz is by far not the best song of the musical. Cell Block Tango and All I Care About Is Love are 1000 times better, When you're good to Mama, Both reached for the gun and Roxie are imo also better.
+AlejandroInTheTux I can't agree with this. Not because i think that phantom's title song fails to bring the house down, it does that and then some, but rather because I can't say which is better: Phantom of the Opera, or Music of the Night. Both are iconic and deserve this list.
yes, I was wondering where they were getting that from - where is the hope - it is about the hope she had but is about how it's dashed and now she's living in hell - life has killed the dream she dreamed - not hopeful at all
There’s a line or two that emphasize hope. “But still I dream he’ll come to me And we will live the years together” She’s hopeful during those lines, but when all is said and done, it’s really a song about how cruel life can be to someone.
I love Heathers, Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, bUT it hurts me because those are the only musicals my generation is falling in love with and they don't bother hearing the classics that made broadway, broadway.
Adri Mulet I get what you're saying, I definitely see it. Those plays are really good, (Heathers has a special place in my heart), but the reason these are so popular now is because they are so new. The classics stay the classics, but the new musicals deserve some praise too. It's hard to be original in a world where everything's already been thought of.
Ikr! It kinda makes me sad that not as many people like the new musicals I like as there are people that mostly like Deh, Heathers, Hamilton, and Bmc. I have literally no one to talk to about Bandstand. 😭
same here! i used to love and join these musical fandoms. but after discovering the past broadway musicals, I turned back and started to love the older musicals . now my favorites are; Book of Mormon , Chicago, little shop of horrors, sister act, kinky boots, next to normal, gentleman's guide and great comet
Les Misérables will always be in my soul. I first saw it on Broadway - three times - then in Seattle, then in a small but excellent production in Coronado, CA. This year I'll get to see the touring production again in San Diego. Can't wait!

The Phantom Of The Opera is such a stunning musical and Music Of The Night is so enchanting. Everytime i watch the film or just listen to the song Gerard Butlers voice takes my sense and puts them into overload I can hardly breath when he sings this in his silk, warm and smooth voice i just fall in love everytime i hear it. What happened to "You'll never walk alone" from Carousal - There's no business likes show business - Annie get your gun - "I am telling you" from Dreamgirls, and "Ol Man River" from Showboat
I agree that it was good, but it sounded far too choked at several points. My personal favorite is Patti LuPone from the 1985 cast, but as the person before me said, it is just personal bias
I think some of my favs are 1. Somewhere - west side story 2. Close every door - joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat 3. Morning glow - pippin Kind of surprised wss didnt place
I don't understand why you used the movie version for so many of these songs when you explained in the beginning that the list was focused on songs originally made famous by their theatrical renditions. The theatrical renditions are more impressive in that they weren't cut and edited.
For many of these songs, original performance video doesn't exist, so they use one of the best-known renditions or a recent Tony/award/special filming. It doesn't detract from the amazingness of the songs, at least.
@@gautierelsa263 And for Phantom. The movie version was not nearly as emotional or impressive as live and I know there are videos of Michael Crawford singing they could have used.
My top 10 10. What Do I Need With Love?-Thoroughly Modern Millie 9. Climb Every Mountain-The Sound of Music 8. Till There Was You-The Music Man 7. Agony-Into the Woods 6. Seasons of Love-Rent 5. Close Every Door-Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat 4. If I Were a Rich Man-Fiddler on the Roof 3. Memory-Cats 2. Music of the Night-Phantom of the Opera 1. Bring Him Home-Les Miserables Bring Him Home needs to be #1. I don't care about anything else, but Bring Him Home is far and away the hardest song from any music theatre show ever. And anyone who is able to sing it in the original key(Sorry Josh Groban) well is one of the absolute best in the world.
Alex Meurer Cats and Phantom Of The Opera are both equally good I love both and you can’t convince me😂😂😂. But I agree there are way better songs in Phantom then in Cats
As a whole sure, but that's mostly because 'Memories' is so much better than most other songs in Cats. In the Phantom of the opera, almost all songs are great, and the story is interesting.
Yes, Phantom of the Opera is amazing. Especially those high notes by Emmy. And Wandering a child, and Wishing a you Were So ehow Here Again, Raoul I've Been There, All I Ask of You reprise, Past the Pont of No Return (especially those cape flips) and Final Lair.
Top 10 Songs From Theater Musicals: 10.Track Down This Murderer 9.Prima Donna 8.Think Of Me 7.Masquerade 6.Notes 5.All I Ask Of You 4.The Phantom of The Opera 3.Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again 2.The Point of No Return 1.The Music of The Night
i would add the following to the list: somewhere here from the west side story, somewhere i don't know how to love him or superstar from jesus christ superstar don't cry for me argentina from evita the impossible dream from man of la mancha send in the clowns from a little night of music you'll never walk alone from carousel where is love or food glorious food from oliver and i am telling you i'm not going from dreamgirls i'd give my life for you from miss saigon and i would also mention on my own from les miserables. now, these may seem glaring omissions but i believe this was on purpose to elicit more comments.
piayootoob the guilty ones- spring awakening Aftershocks- next to normal Sunrise- in the heights Close the door- Anastasia Once and for all- Newsies Still hurting- the last five years These are just some of my favorites
+piayootoob - YOU ROCK!! Amazing nominations and thorough!! I hope that Everyone (at least in this Comment thread) has seen all of the movies (or live theater) that include the songs/musicals that you mention above. You know your stuff!!!
not to mention don't rain on my parade is only an honerable mention and no song from west side story, hairspray or grease even made the list! this is bullshit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are way better songs than “Do-Re-Mi” to be included in this list. “Don’t rain on my parade” should be a number in the list and not an honourable mention.
I think that Hard Knock Life should have been for Annie instead of Tomorrow because even though Tomorrow is the main, Hard Knock Life is far more iconic with most people knowing it who aren't even musical watchers, while Tomorrow is known, but not nearly as much.
I disagree. I don't want to start an argument, but Tomorrow is used way more often in other movies or comercials and has been for ages. it has way more exposure.
+bellygirl135 Oh it is certainly in more media, just myself has always thought of HNL when I though Annie after my school did the play. And in the Web series Mianite, HNL was mentioned a lot, and so in other things.
+NDAIA I'd have to disagree. While Hard knock life is iconic, I cannot say that it is more well known than Tomorrow. (Although Hard Knock Life is my preference.)
BoxesOfFoxes You're not the only one who is disappointed. Seriously, all the songs in Sweeney Todd have deeper meanings, require understanding, and etc. That musical is literally a masterpiece!
Sondheim is a fantastic composer, and probably the best lyricist to ever work in the theater. The fact that he only got one honorable mention in this list for lyrics is a joke.
They should have had at least one Sondheim song instead of that song from Hair or instead of giving Andrew Lloyd Webber two songs on the list. A bit unfair. Sondheim deserves a mention.
Personally, I wouldn't have had "Seasons of Love" or "Aquarius" on the list. I think their are too many other more deserving choices. Shall We Dance - The King and I I Could Have Danced All Night - My Fair Lady Anything You can Do - Annie Get Your Gun Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now - Hairsrpay Adelaide's Lament - Guys and Dolls The Impossible Dream - Man From La Mancha If My Friends Could See Me Now - Sweet Charity Everything's Coming Up Roses - Gypsy (I prefer "You Gotta Have a Gimmick, but the above is the iconic song from the musical) Camelot - Camelot Whatever Lola Wants - Damn Yankees We Need a Little Christmas - Mama Summertime - Porgy and Bess (Not entirely sure this qualifies, but if it does it should be in top 3) I'm Going to Wash that Man Right Out of My Hair - South Pacific And that's only the songs from musicals I have seen film versions of, or songs I knew were from musicals. There are dozens of musicals I have never seen so I can't even begin to rate the songs from those productions.
I think there's at least a couple songs from Little Shop of Horrors that could be on here. Like, Ya Never Know, for example. Also, possibly The Meek Shall Inherit (the actual musical one not the movie musical version that's way too short) I dunno I just really love Little Shop of Horrors and want it to be more popular
Maria de Cuestas I adore "My Fair Lady," it was the first musical film I watched; the singing, sets, and costumes are superb, and Rex Harris is just absolute snarky perfection.
Y'all gotta keep in mind that this is from the eyes of a casual musical fan. I would personally throw in stuff like "Confrontation" from Jekyll and Hyde, but it would get too obscure for most :P
Les Mis and Phantom deserve the top spots. They’re classics. Cats is amazing but the stories in Les Mis and Phantom are so deep and powerful and reflect humanity in our worst and best
10) Unfortunately, I've not had the opportunity to watch a performance of Wicked nor taken the opportunity to listen to the soundtrack. 9) Love it. 8) Loved the musical. Maybe Matchmaker would have been a better choice but I'll accept this since I love this song. 7) I liked the musical but I wasn't overly fond of the music in itself. However, it is a very beautiful song that was chosen here so I'll agree with the choice. 6) Never seen it. Sorry. 5) To be quite honest, you could ask almost anybody and they would be able to identify the song and the musical itself. It deserves the number one spot but first let's see which one actually is number one before I make my judgement. 4) I would have gone with He Had It Coming but I love this song too much. 3) Love it. 2) I would have gone with the title theme. 1) Ok I agree. This deserves the number one spot.
Ok honestly, and I’m like one of the biggest Phantom/Les Mis, and would always support them Over anything else, but honestly Memory deserves #1, it’s the most iconic “broadway musical” song
Uhhhhhh.... the impossible dream from "The Man of La Mancha" doesn't even get an honorable mention? THE TIME WARP GOT AN HONORABLE MENTION! If you haven't heard this song, I highly recommend you look it up, its inspirational, sad, and one hell of an ear worm.
Am I the only one that actually knows "Kinky Boots"? I don't think it is a musical but no one talks about it and I think it is on Netflix too.. I love it so much
“I dreamed a dream” is neither inspirational nor optimistic. It is a very beautiful but sad song. Now I think they have no idea on what they are talking about.
My favorite musical theatre songs are actually "Raise a Little Hell" from Bonnie and Clyde, or "Wig in a Box" from Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I do love Memory though, even if I absolutely can't stand Cats. I first heard it performed by Chris Colfer, and he did it flawlessly.
+Sebastian Reed Andrews Chris Colfer is one talented Broadway singer...his and Lea Michele's duet of Defying Gravity is one of my favorite versions of the song...only the Kristen/Idina version beats it
+Sebastian Reed Andrews are you talking about the rock genre of raise a little hell???? that isn't a musical song. It was from the most famous canadian band possibly ever "the guess who"
smith john No, it's from Bonnie and Clyde. They could be different songs with the same name, but I know that there is a Bonnie and Clyde song called Raise a Little Hell, and it's my favorite song from that soundtrack.
I'm happy with 'Memory' being #1 on the list. 'The Phantom of the Opera' might be the better musical but 'Memory' from 'Cats' is the greatest song from any musical in history.
I think it's about time to do "Another Top 10 Songs from Theatre Musicals"
Exactly I was sad that Hamilton and heathers wasn't on here lol
It needs Heathers omg
👍 true

IKR
Should be called "Here's ten good musical theatre songs, not necessarily the best and in no particular order"
They're all great though
except for cats, les mis, and phantom of the opera. The first two are terrible, the third's just...meh.

Grace the Actress what songs form spring, awakining are well known
Grace the Actress the only one,I can think of is, bitch of,living
The Music of The Night deserves to be number one!
well that song is amazing. Its a classic and has so much meaning. And don't say that it has no story. Its there
Did I just hear “I dreamed a dream” and “optimism” in the same sentence???!
It is optimistic in a way.....it's just past tense.
unfortunately, yes.
that's it, I wish the whole earth would be a musical
Totally!

I understand why Memory got #1, even if Cats isn’t the best musical, Memory pretty much is one of the most iconic Broadway songs of all time, probably right up there with One Day More, On My Own, Music Of The Night, Seasons Of Love, etc.
I would've liked the Cell Block Tango to be Chicago's song.
YASSS
Oh my gosh yes
That is exactly what I was thinking.
Yeah but All That Jazz is not only better known, it also became the title of Bob Fosse's movie about himself.
+Mark Kittel All that Jazz is by far not the best song of the musical. Cell Block Tango and All I Care About Is Love are 1000 times better, When you're good to Mama, Both reached for the gun and Roxie are imo also better.
This literally caused a riot in my theater dorm
I couldn’t like this hard enough
In case you're wondering it's cause we were half and half over whether or not the music of the night topped I dreamed a dream
We all agreed on cats as long as it was memory
It should have been The Phantom of the Opera's self title song! I love that song, it's like rock opera stuff.
If you want more rock opera, watch "the Beauty Underneath" more phantom 😀
If you want more rock opera, watch "the Beauty Underneath" more phantom 😀
+SockBadger 24601 They should have done the 25th Anniversary of Phantom instead huh?
(Looks around)
-an obsessive fan
+AlejandroInTheTux I can't agree with this. Not because i think that phantom's title song fails to bring the house down, it does that and then some, but rather because I can't say which is better: Phantom of the Opera, or Music of the Night. Both are iconic and deserve this list.
I dreamed a dream is not a hopeful song
yes, I was wondering where they were getting that from - where is the hope - it is about the hope she had but is about how it's dashed and now she's living in hell - life has killed the dream she dreamed - not hopeful at all
There’s a line or two that emphasize hope.
“But still I dream he’ll come to me
And we will live the years together”
She’s hopeful during those lines, but when all is said and done, it’s really a song about how cruel life can be to someone.
There are so many better songs in les Mis than I dreamed a dream, Ann hathaway or not
Surely the fact that it's in the minor key should be a that it's a depressing song.
CelesteWolf Animates she does follow the line with “but there are dreams that cannot be”, though
I love Heathers, Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, bUT
it hurts me because those are the only musicals my generation is falling in love with and they don't bother hearing the classics that made broadway, broadway.

Les Misérables will always be in my soul. I first saw it on Broadway - three times - then in Seattle, then in a small but excellent production in Coronado, CA. This year I'll get to see the touring production again in San Diego. Can't wait!
Jacquie Timms same! They r my favorite musicals.
me too. and i LOVED IT!
Jacquie Timms POTO is the best. It’s so beautiful and everybody sang beautiful
Jacquie Timms phantom gave me chills, les Misérables just brought me to tears
" It's just a jump 2 the left

I remember doing the time Warp.
Drinking of moments
And blacknes will hit me
And avoid to be Calling!
Let's do the time warp!
I love that song it is one of my favorites
Love that song! Sing it for school play
(Best drama teacher ever!)
Am I the only one that thinks Climb Every Mountain should be the song from sound of music? It gives me chills every time I hear it.
Same
Or heck even “My Favorite Things.”
It's a phenomenal song but it's less recognisable as the others
For me it's Edelweiss. It's the only non-musical song in the whole show.
@@justinm2697 what do you mean non musical song?
am I the only one waiting for The phantom of the Opera 😂😍😍
YES!
Samantha Kaefer Amo ese musical, sobre todo a Gerard Butler
I skipped like the whole video hoping it would be Think of Me, and not the movie. I like the stage version better
Sarah Jacobs The movie was decent, but you're right, the stage version is far better. I especially liked the 25th anniversary production, though I have watched others as well.
My dad saw Phantom in Toronto with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman
I like The Point of No Return from Phantom of the Opera
The broadway version of that song is incredible!!
That would've been my #1.
Yes, I love that one too, so desperate!
Yaaa fam
Sameee "it is a cold and dismal place"
I love every song from Phantom of the Opera
Stacy Miley Me too
Me too all the songs are so beautiful 😍
I love Cats but Phantom is by far the superior musical. I would also like to argue half of these were made popular by the film versions so shouldn't be counted like they said at the start
I agree
Destiel27 I agree but also les mis is extremely iconic
Phantom of the opera is stolen from a Pink Floyd song called “echoes” there was a lawsuit and the producer of phantom of the opera had stolen other songs before
Maybe, but memory is an amazing song. This is a list of good songs, not good musicals.
It’s not about the superior musical... it’s about the superior song
I seen the Phantom on the cover, so now I'm here
Fluff Sight Literally why I came
Phantom of the Opera is my life. I see Gerard, I die. point of no return is my all time favorite scene and song ever
You ‘seen’ it?
Fluff Sight YASSS! No one can pass up Gerard Butler. And that is my musical, but yes the others are good alsi

Annie? ANNIE? Annie was higher up on the list than SOUND OF MUSIC and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF?!?! HOW I MEAN WHY I MEAN WHAT
Masquerade-The Phantom of the Opera
That song gets me every time...particularly the reprise.
don't forget "no on would listen"
Masquerade is so sickening that after you hear it, you can hear it play by your ear over and over and imaging yourself in that party..even when youre taking a bath..
Ouch. ;)
Did that scene get hit by the Cybermen when the movie was made? I mean, it is a deleted scene from the movie. ;)

Maybe 'Ellen' Page sings it in the bath at home 😂

Bad referring then :^)
not Lizzy Grant yeah
One Day More was the best song out of Les Mis, in my opinion
Freya Stuart I'm in love with On My Own. But yeah. One More Day is fantastic

Amy O'Shea Empty Chairs at Empty Tables is so beautiful. Brings me to tears every time. "My friends my friends don't ask me what you sacrifice was for. Empty chairs at empty tables where my friends will sing no more". What a powerful lyric.

Ok everyone hating on cats, please stop. Memory is an incredibly beautiful song, maybe the musical is weird but the song is beautiful.

I'm the same i just love The Phantom Of The Opera and Gerard Butler is my favourite Phantom he enchants me from start to finish 🥰💖
Cried like a baby when I saw Anne Hathaway sing I dreamed a dream in Les Mis
Doug Dimmadome Owner Of The Dimsdale Dimmadome I hunk everybody did! It was so beautiful!
Doug Dimmadome Owner Of The Dimsdale Dimmadome
Same
Doug Dimmadome Owner Of The Dimsdale Dimmadome me too
She was good, but lacked the power. I think Lea Salonga was WAY better. But that's my personal bias.
I agree that it was good, but it sounded far too choked at several points. My personal favorite is Patti LuPone from the 1985 cast, but as the person before me said, it is just personal bias
Is it just me or is “empty chairs at Empty tables” super underrated?
Zohar Sarig oh, yes! I love that song too! I love to sing it.
Totally Agree!
yes
YEEEESSS
YASSS
Andrew Lloyd Webber scores #1 and #2. I would have chosen a few differently but that is true of any chooser.
Watching and listening to Elaine Page sing "Memory" in London had me drenched in tears. The best! "Phantom'", all of the songs, had the same effect.
I can't watch phantom without someone watching t with because I stop breathing when he sings......... I fell in love with the phantom in middle school
Margaret Lawrence I RELATE SO MUCH
SAME
The Phantom of the Opera was my first musical in 5th grade with colm Wilkinson. I love it my favorite.
I feel like "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" was robbed of a place on this chart. It's probably one of the hardest songs to sing.
I cry every time I hear any song from Rent because I can't get over Angel
Llamatacos295 same!
I think some of my favs are
1. Somewhere - west side story
2. Close every door - joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat
3. Morning glow - pippin
Kind of surprised wss didnt place
I think musicals by Andrew Lloyd Webber could have their own top 10s.
It does!
Bottom ten more like it!
The arrangements are appealing but did not originate from musical.
"And I Am Telling You..." from Dreamgirls
I don't understand why you used the movie version for so many of these songs when you explained in the beginning that the list was focused on songs originally made famous by their theatrical renditions. The theatrical renditions are more impressive in that they weren't cut and edited.
For many of these songs, original performance video doesn't exist, so they use one of the best-known renditions or a recent Tony/award/special filming. It doesn't detract from the amazingness of the songs, at least.
same
It does for the Mis!!! @@browncoatkevin
@@gautierelsa263 And for Phantom. The movie version was not nearly as emotional or impressive as live and I know there are videos of Michael Crawford singing they could have used.
@@gautierelsa263 Anne Hathaway's performance of "I Dreamed A Dream" blows away any theatrical production by a *long shot*.
My top 10
10. What Do I Need With Love?-Thoroughly Modern Millie
9. Climb Every Mountain-The Sound of Music
8. Till There Was You-The Music Man
7. Agony-Into the Woods
6. Seasons of Love-Rent
5. Close Every Door-Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
4. If I Were a Rich Man-Fiddler on the Roof
3. Memory-Cats
2. Music of the Night-Phantom of the Opera
1. Bring Him Home-Les Miserables
Bring Him Home needs to be #1. I don't care about anything else, but Bring Him Home is far and away the hardest song from any music theatre show ever. And anyone who is able to sing it in the original key(Sorry Josh Groban) well is one of the absolute best in the world.
Phantom of the Opera is the longest running musical on broadway because it is BY FAR the best. There is no reason why cats should be placed above it.
Alex Meurer THANK YOU!
Alex Meurer Cats and Phantom Of The Opera are both equally good I love both and you can’t convince me😂😂😂. But I agree there are way better songs in Phantom then in Cats
YASSSSSS
AGREED.
As a whole sure, but that's mostly because 'Memories' is so much better than most other songs in Cats. In the Phantom of the opera, almost all songs are great, and the story is interesting.
Where's Miss Saigon?? It's always underated 😭😭😭
Yeah😢
trusty beetle YES CLAUDE MICHEL SCHONBERG IS BY FAR THE BESTTTTT
phantom of the opera 💜💜💜
AMBS FPS ikr 😍😍😍😍😍😍💘💘💖 was that too many hearts and les mis for me
AMBS FPS i love dat Movie 😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻

You know I am not going to say no to this.
I'm helpless without said video!
There is nothing rich folks love more.
Mary Hough same
They need to hurry up before they throw away their shot for such a video. It would blow us all away.
Phantom of the opera intro song is the best!!!
seriously. but any of those songs could be on this list. I always thought Point of no return was the best
+RandomVideoCircus Do you mean the overture?
My favorite was "Down once more" even though it is actually 20 minutes long b
My favorite was "Down once more" even though it is actually 20 minutes long b
+Skylar Lange my favorite was "Point of No Return"
DreamGirls....”And I am telling you, I’m not going.”
Jennifer Holiday (theatre), Jennifer Hudson (movie)... Excellent
Love the phantom of the opera. 😍😍😍😍😍😗😗😗😗😗😘😘😘😘😚😚😚😚😙😙😙
IM FUCKING DYING AT THE FACT THAT THEY CHOSE HASA DIGA EEBOWAI OUT OF ALL BOOK OF MORMON SONGS LMAO
alex Just the fact that they but a song in there from The Book of Mormon Musical.
alex AAAND I BELEEEEIVEE, THAT IN 1978 god changed his mind about black people.
I love the song You Can't Stop the Beat from Hairspray
YEEEEESS! I was in that production :)
AnimeGirl4891 Yeah and Good Morning Baltimore. Where were they at?!,! ! 🤔🤔
AnimeGirl4891 my favourite showwwww
AnimeGirl4891 that's what I was thinking when watching this
AnimeGirl4891 YEEEEESSSSS!!!!! I love that movie 😁😁😁
Music of the Night should have been first.
Amy Sparks I agree. Especially when Michael Crawford performs it.
@@darthkurland ew
It’s nothing compared to Memory
Meh
Yes. Especially the Ramin Karimloo version.
yesss, phantom got 2, like if ur happy bc PHANTOM PHOREVER
I'm so glad it got number 2, but Music of the night isn't the greatest song of the show, Phantom of the Opera is the greatest song in the production
I like 'all i ask of you' better...
Nataly Donder all i ask of you was nice but... everyone else ussualy ships christine and erik so... plus raoul is a FOP
PHANS UNITE
Yes, Phantom of the Opera is amazing. Especially those high notes by Emmy. And Wandering a child, and Wishing a you Were So ehow Here Again, Raoul I've Been There, All I Ask of You reprise, Past the Pont of No Return (especially those cape flips) and Final Lair.
“Cell block tango” is better than “all that jazz.”
Thank you
what about anything from Stephen Sondheim? Into the Woods or Sweeney Todd or Company or a Little Night Music or something?
Kiley Warner agree
Into the woods= hello little girl, sweeny todd= Johanna company= company or lady's who lunch and a little night music= send,in the clowns
Really? Into the woods?. Don't get me wrong I love Steph but that? I agree on the Sweeney Todd tho.
sondheim songs are like the god of broadway
If I could like this comment 100 times I would. I agree. 100%
Dont Cry For Me Argentina.
Jesus Christ Superstar.
YES! I also wondered why those two weren't on the list. Don't cry for me Argentina should have been top 3 but didn't even get an honorable mention.
Yeah, Yvonne elliman won a Grammy for I dont know how to love him in the movie adaptation of JC superstar
CrashPirate01 I’m not religious either and it’s one of my five favourite musicals
Who chose these? So much better stuff has been ignored!
Absolutely! Argentina should have been number one!
Top 10 Songs From Theater Musicals:
10.Track Down This Murderer
9.Prima Donna
8.Think Of Me
7.Masquerade
6.Notes
5.All I Ask Of You
4.The Phantom of The Opera
3.Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again
2.The Point of No Return
1.The Music of The Night
ChloetheChlam now that's a list. Except masquerade should be 1
all of poto😂
I love this
YAS!
THANK YOU
It's Elaine Paige, not Ellen Page. Good to see Memory at the top, but West Side Story should have had an entry.
Thanks. By the way, I only accept Elaine Paige's version.
Agreed
I agree with that.
West Side Story-had an entry. Sorry
I meant an entry in the top ten.
Was that adele dazeem?
It sounds like her, so it's safe to say "Yes".
do you mean Idina Menzel?
Becky Timmis
I see that the sarcastic humor gene does not run within your gene pool...
+Trent csqw It does I was just joking. I did actually put the laughing emoji but for some reason it didn't show up. No need to be rude
Becky Timmis
Not being rude. Just kidding around, but like you said, it is hard to catch your "inflection" without an emoji on that line.
Phantom should have been first....all of the songs are so gorgeous ❤️
Elodie Bel Phantom of the opera is stolen from a Pink Floyd song called “echoes” however Pink Floyd chose not to sue.
@@danielhumphrey3836 sucks :3 still amazing songs
In both the Broadway version and the film version.
Meh
i would add the following to the list:
somewhere here from the west side story, somewhere
i don't know how to love him or superstar from jesus christ superstar
don't cry for me argentina from evita
the impossible dream from man of la mancha
send in the clowns from a little night of music
you'll never walk alone from carousel
where is love or food glorious food from oliver
and i am telling you i'm not going from dreamgirls
i'd give my life for you from miss saigon
and i would also mention on my own from les miserables.
now, these may seem glaring omissions but i believe this was on purpose to elicit more comments.
piayootoob
the guilty ones- spring awakening
Aftershocks- next to normal
Sunrise- in the heights
Close the door- Anastasia
Once and for all- Newsies
Still hurting- the last five years
These are just some of my favorites
+piayootoob - YOU ROCK!! Amazing nominations and thorough!! I hope that Everyone (at least in this Comment thread) has seen all of the movies (or live theater) that include the songs/musicals that you mention above. You know your stuff!!!
Ummm, I know it's gone to obscurity now but I adored
Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat-Guys and Dolls
Professor Nichols love that one
I want a Wicked Movie! Kristen, Idina, Leo. Now!
Jonathan Young youll be happy to hear a wicked movie with the original cast is confirmed to be released in 2019 😃😃😃
I would love Kerry Ellis in it, original West end cast. She's amazing.
Nyree Rowland 100% agree
Not the original cast...it will likely be Lea Michelle and (please not) Amanda Seyfried.
I WANT A LA LA LAND PLAY
why the hell is defying gravity in last place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
not to mention don't rain on my parade is only an honerable mention and no song from west side story, hairspray or grease even made the list! this is bullshit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know, I had the same reaction :/
Maddie McBride I know I was so frustrated
Maddie McBride That's what I said!
Maddie McBride That's what I said!
+NDAIA fair enough. when I think of Annie I think of either Tomorrow or I Think I'm gonna like it here
+NDAIA I'd have to disagree. While Hard knock life is iconic, I cannot say that it is more well known than Tomorrow. (Although Hard Knock Life is my preference.)
Are you kidding? Tomorrow is legendary!
My favourite musical is Sweeney Todd and I'm super disappointed that no song from this musical made it into this video. Never mind ;)
BoxesOfFoxes You're not the only one who is disappointed. Seriously, all the songs in Sweeney Todd have deeper meanings, require understanding, and etc. That musical is literally a masterpiece!
ikr sondheim is truly a genius
Sondheim is a fantastic composer, and probably the best lyricist to ever work in the theater. The fact that he only got one honorable mention in this list for lyrics is a joke.
I know opinions differ but why on Earth would anyone think that "Memories" is better than anything from Les Miserables or Phantom
kungfukid2191 les Mis and Phantom are my favorite musicals!
I think it's better. Like you said opinion differs
How I think it should have been ranked.
1. Phantom of the Opera
2. Les Mis
3. Rocky Horror Picture Show
(2&3 can be switchable)
Then Cats
RIGHT!!
It's songs from musicals not the musical itself.
2:44-2:47 I've watched Sound of Music over 50 times, and I just noticed Friedrich looking over the banister in the background...
This should just be called Top 10 most well-known musical theatre songs
I much prefer "Sweet Transvestite" to "The Time Warp." I am sad no song from "Sweeney Todd" made this list, even as an honourable mention.
Cordelia Palmer If they make "Another Top 10" there's multiple they could at least mention but the one that came to mind right away is A Little Priest
They should have had at least one Sondheim song instead of that song from Hair or instead of giving Andrew Lloyd Webber two songs on the list. A bit unfair. Sondheim deserves a mention.
I feel Like Rachel Berry on GLEE sang most of these songs
sometimes I put glue on my face that's because she loved musicals and Broadway
Seasons of love is so fun to sing my whole theatre cast sang it so random once and it sounded like we legit practiced for hours it was great
Cell Block Tango, not All That Jazz.
cellephane man
Pop
Cread134 squish
Amelia Schuster lipshitz
Alex Brown It is All That Jazz
Personally, I wouldn't have had "Seasons of Love" or "Aquarius" on the list. I think their are too many other more deserving choices.
Shall We Dance - The King and I
I Could Have Danced All Night - My Fair Lady
Anything You can Do - Annie Get Your Gun
Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now - Hairsrpay
Adelaide's Lament - Guys and Dolls
The Impossible Dream - Man From La Mancha
If My Friends Could See Me Now - Sweet Charity
Everything's Coming Up Roses - Gypsy
(I prefer "You Gotta Have a Gimmick, but the above is the iconic song from the musical)
Camelot - Camelot
Whatever Lola Wants - Damn Yankees
We Need a Little Christmas - Mama
Summertime - Porgy and Bess (Not entirely sure this qualifies, but if it does it should be in top 3)
I'm Going to Wash that Man Right Out of My Hair - South Pacific
And that's only the songs from musicals I have seen film versions of, or songs I knew were from musicals. There are dozens of musicals I have never seen so I can't even begin to rate the songs from those productions.
+David Addams Bad typing, That's We Need a Little Christmas from Mame.
I LOVED THAT SONG FROM MY FAIR LADY
I was so expecting some Guys and Dolls! My disappointment was great; because Sit Down, You're Rocking The Boat is one of my all time abortive numbers.
I think there's at least a couple songs from Little Shop of Horrors that could be on here. Like, Ya Never Know, for example. Also, possibly The Meek Shall Inherit (the actual musical one not the movie musical version that's way too short)
I dunno I just really love Little Shop of Horrors and want it to be more popular
Somewhere That's Green is an amazing number!
Song Heart I've never seen it on Broadwat. I would love to.
Now (It's Just The Gas) is horrifying and amazing
Not to mention suddenly seymour
I clicked on this bc the cover pic was phantom.
Learn to live with disappointment when watching a Mojo listing.
Ikr
Same.
What happened with "My Fair Lady", "The King and I", "Camelot", "Man of La Mancha", "Oklahoma"?
Maria de Cuestas I adore "My Fair Lady," it was the first musical film I watched; the singing, sets, and costumes are superb, and Rex Harris is just absolute snarky perfection.
I agree 100%!
I agree 100%!
It 7 Brides for 7 Brothers. I grew up watching this and it's a great!
You ar right, 7 Brides for Seven Brothers is magnificent! Sorry I missed it my list.
Defying gravity should have been higher on the list.
? her voice is o offensive to the ears though....
seriously? That's one of the best songs ever. If you can't appreciate that, well its your loss.
agreed omg its my favourite song of all time
Personally I would have put "The Wizard and I" on this list instead of DG.
I feel like the song's overrated
Y'all gotta keep in mind that this is from the eyes of a casual musical fan. I would personally throw in stuff like "Confrontation" from Jekyll and Hyde, but it would get too obscure for most :P
God Of Potatoes I would have thrown in Bend and Snap
YES CONFRONTATION IS MY SHIT
I LIKE THE WAY YOU ALL THINK.
YAS
Jekyll and Hyde is for sure missing. So is Heathers.
Les Mis and Phantom deserve the top spots. They’re classics. Cats is amazing but the stories in Les Mis and Phantom are so deep and powerful and reflect humanity in our worst and best
Phantom of the opera should be first why isn't it I'm so mad pha-*memory starts playing* *starts crying* ok you got me
Bubble Berry she speaks the truth
This deserves the number one spot.
you need to watch wicked ASAP
+Sandra “Michaelis” Ackerman 4) I believe is called "Cellblock Tango"...and part of me agrees with you.
Ohh! It would be awesome if they did a list of top songs from the black butler musicals...
Why no LSOH Dentist song
Wicked has THE BEST sound track of any musical
Why are only English songs included? What about Notre Dame? Literally one of the *best* musicals ever
iFartStrawberries or Romeo et Juliette. All of the songs are beautiful
Les Mis is a french musical, but got famous in english and not in France in the 80's
Ok honestly, and I’m like one of the biggest Phantom/Les Mis, and would always support them
Over anything else, but honestly Memory deserves #1, it’s the most iconic “broadway musical” song
Don't rain on my parade could have been an actual pick
Declan Mahoney
Uhhhhhh.... the impossible dream from "The Man of La Mancha" doesn't even get an honorable mention? THE TIME WARP GOT AN HONORABLE MENTION! If you haven't heard this song, I highly recommend you look it up, its inspirational, sad, and one hell of an ear worm.
Joe Tozer yeah I agree 100%. Lol not even honorable mention 😂😂 I was expecting atleast honorable mention for it
One of if not my favorite songs!!! Tears and joy mixed together....
The impossible dream is a great song. Should have been #3.
I agree ... it was a really bad omission.
TOTALLY AGREE!!!! I thought it might be #1 but WHAT?!?!? Not even HM????
All That Jazz😍
To bad my hero roy
"What I Did For Love" from A Chorus Line should have gotten an honorable mention at the very least.
Am I the only one that actually knows "Kinky Boots"? I don't think it is a musical but no one talks about it and I think it is on Netflix too.. I love it so much
I would've loved to see it on this list. all the stage songs were made for it, the movie version had pop songs at the time.
+Owain Milliken exactly!
It has been turned into a musical
I Love The Rocky Horror Picture Show!!!!
Andrew Penn me too
Suddenly Seymour should've gotten some mentioning atleast....
EXACTLY what I was thinking!!!!
YES!
Buster Minal YES or maybe even Somewhere That's Green!
That movie is so creepy
Really? I love it!!
“I dreamed a dream” is neither inspirational nor optimistic. It is a very beautiful but sad song. Now I think they have no idea on what they are talking about.
I just realized Gwen Stephani sample the song in fiddler in the roof in her song rich girl lmao
same😂😭 all I heard was “If I were a rich man yabadibidibidibidibidum” and I realized my whole life was a lie😭😂
Right!!
I knew she took it from something.....didnt know where
She got the sample from reggae artist louchie lou & michie one
Same I was like omg
there was no sondhiem on this list...Sweeney Todd is sooooo underappreciated!!!!!
TO be fair, Sondheim's musicals don't go mainstream. I'm glad they don't.
I love The Worst Pie in London and A Little Priest are such marvelous conceptions or confections. Grisly musical.
The list lost all its credibility for me when there was not a single Sondheim song.
@@justinm2697 ITs not a most popular list though, It's best songs, you cannot not,
have a Sondheim or 3
My favorite musical theatre songs are actually "Raise a Little Hell" from Bonnie and Clyde, or "Wig in a Box" from Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
I do love Memory though, even if I absolutely can't stand Cats. I first heard it performed by Chris Colfer, and he did it flawlessly.
+Sebastian Reed Andrews Chris Colfer is one talented Broadway singer...his and Lea Michele's duet of Defying Gravity is one of my favorite versions of the song...only the Kristen/Idina version beats it
Gabriela Mallo He really is. Apparently he's in talks to be in an actual Broadway production, and I am determined to go and see him if he is.
Sebastian Reed Andrews
If that's the case, I'm saving up my money to get tickets, because that is one show I will not miss
I'm happy with 'Memory' being #1 on the list. 'The Phantom of the Opera' might be the better musical but 'Memory' from 'Cats' is the greatest song from any musical in history.
