  • In early 2011, Apple released the CDMA iPhone 4 for Verizon - a phone that not only fixed the infamous "Antennagate", but also had no SIM tray! In this video, we discuss the why and the how- and look at Antennagate as a whole, especially compared to the Bendgate controversy response.

    Some fun obscure Apple content for you all today, hope you enjoy! - I never realized just how in-depth Apple's response to Antennagate was, especially compared to the Bendgate controversy 4 short years later. Steve Jobs, love him or hate him, definitely added a personal touch to everything Apple did.

    Something that seems to have been forgotten to time is that shortly after the iPhone 5 launched, there were reports of them coming with dings and dents brand new out of the box. I remember Apple saying that those dings and dents fell within normal error rates at the time and that was pretty much all they did to acknowledge it. I believe it was mostly only the black model that was affected which is probably why they switch it to being "space gray" for the 5S and SE1 models.

    The CDMA iPhone 4 actually became the basis for the 4S as both phones share similar underpinnings save for the SIM tray and upgraded SOC in the 4S.
    There's actually a provision for SIM cards on CDMA called Removable User Identity Module (R-UIM), not to mention that some Verizon phones do have a GSM SIM slot for roaming iirc.

  • @MightyRob1
    @MightyRob1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    I lived through antenna gate and had one of the AT&T phones that would drop a call or lose signal if you held it across those antenna points. However, the iPhone 4 was probably the first mainstream phone that being made of glass on the front and back require the use of a case, and after the first month or two, when people started realizing this thing would break when you dropped it, started putting cases on which alleviated the problem and pretty much it went away overnight.

    it is so rare to see Apple admit they made a mistake with their products, i think because the antennagate was affecting way too many users they had to do something, it was probably affecting their sales too, it's so ironic that they fixed the issue with the 4s in 2011 and then had the dying graphics issue on the 2011 Macbooks .

    Lack of simcard seems really strange even for apple considering many apple costumers are more affluent and used to travelling a lot and hence they NEED a simcard tray. Many countries yet don’t support esim for pay as you go plans or for tourists. This decision seems that was taken due to pressure from USA mobile phone networks that wanted their costumers to use roaming more when abroad hence generating more revenue. Less option for the consumer and better for big telecom companies. Just another normal day in America

    Yeah , CDMA was a thing in the US and later in the world as well , and it wasn't all that hard to switch to another CDMA or GSM provider , you just had to visit the provider store and get it sorted , just as much as with eSIM today. Most of the phones had SIM slot for obvious reasons , but changing number for CDMA device wasn't much of a difference than changing eSIM today , it was usually network configuration message but if you knew what you were doing , you could type that info yourself too. Most people didn't want to type anything as it was too much for average customer back then and things haven't changed much today. The only convinience of SIM as such (if phone wasn't network locked) that you hand't had to deal with config messages and usually , some online portal from which you'd request new network settings. Also , you don't have to worry if chip that holds network info is damaged as it is with CDMA/eSIM , as replacing the entire device can be very inconvinient and frustrating experience. eSIM is more convinient on smartwatches than it is on the phones , but it's good to have it both , just in case.

    Hey, I really good video sounded really interesting but I have to say apple getting rid of the physical sim in the American models is just a typical Apple thing. Fixing a problem that wasn’t there. It’s just taking a feature away and making it harder for people to switch carriers. I’m sure the carriers asked apple to do this and what’s really irritating is apple is not using that space for anything there’s just a box inside there it’s no extra battery no extra anything it’s just empty space now.

      @ruffmadman 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Nah, there was extensive signal testing, and if I recall correctly the iPhone 4 theoretically had the best antenna performance out of equivalent smartphones of its time. The problem with traditional testing is that in order to test these products, the devices would be held up by fixed armatures to ensure consistent testing. These armatures are not representative of a human hand at all and what would happen if you were to bridge these two antennas. This style of antenna was pretty much a world's first at the time, so they had no idea that it would happen simply because it was the first time anyone had done this.
      Testing is still done in anechoic chambers with special armatures holding the phone up today. But now we have the benefit of hindsight to test for interference with hand positioning.

    Antenna gate was something for sure. Bend gate was garbage nonsense of people picking on apple just so they could get their 15 minutes of fame. Think about it. Do you spend $1000 on some thing and then sit on it or forcefully try to bend it? Nobody in their right mind would forcefully try to bend $1000 item and of course sitting on your phone if you weigh the weight of an average adult, you’re going to cause major issues. That’s not something to get about. That just shows how stupid, ignorant, and selfish people can get. Instead of appreciating the fact that they have this amazing technology in the pocket of their jeans that connects them to the world, they would rather complain about how they are too stupid to pull their phone out of their pocket, and they sat down and bent it. You wanna prove me wrong? The audience of videos Showing people literally trying to bend the phone tells a lot. Wonderful video as always, and stay amazing buddy. I look forward to your videos all the time even though I am definitely a very harsh critic.

    That isnt strange at all. CDMA phones have been lacking SIM cards for many years before the iphone. It just seems strange because LTE requires a SIM card, and CDMA phones are less common than GSM/UMTS devices. Most CDMA devices made after 2012 or so support all network bands due to LTE using regular old SIMs once again.

    Here’s my random claim to fame. I was the 2nd customer in the UK to have a bent iPhone 6 Plus, well at least according to Apple at the time.
    How did I bend it? I had it in the front pocket of my non skinny jeans with big pockets. I picked it up at the Apple Store on launch day, set it up in store, put it in my pocket, left and drove home. When I out of the car and found I had a bent phone.
    Apple tried desperately to convince me to make an AppleCare claim instead of making a warranty report, as “It’s cosmetic so not covered”. I stood my ground. I got my money back, voted with my wallet and ended up with Sony until 2023, when I moved back to Apple.
    I agree that Apple under Cook is not the same as Apple under Jobs but then again, that’s capitalism 101. The customer is only right when they are handing over their money, after that they’re on their own. There’s not a single giant tech company that acts the same as Apple in 2008-2012, because such things hurt their bottom line. I came back fully aware of this, I wouldn’t get better treatment from Sony/Samsung/Huawei/Xiaomi/Oneplus etc
    if their phone broke due to a design flaw, so boycotting Apple for the same thing no longer served any purpose. Sad, but true

    CDMA sucked so hard. You couldn't switch providers without buying a new phone or flashing firmware. It was just used by Verizon to lock people to their network

    I remember my wife had an iPhone 6 Plus. She carry it in her purse 👜, bendgate never affected her. I think Apple was right, but yea they should payback customers who encountered bendgate. But we know Apple.
