Literal fact given Anders is the only character to pine after Hawke by default, but his judgement about other people is unusually perceptive given his own situation, losing his mind to a fade spirit. A little too black and white, but Merrill does pick her demon over you, Fenris does have a permanent murder-boner for mages, Aveline does frequently make major oversights, and Isabella does have a big heart deep down despite her selfishness, etc. He's not wrong. There's just more to each character and their relationship with Hawke, but that's what I love about each and every companion in DA2 (minus Sebastian? Not hating, but he's a bit basic). The characters that inhabit Hawke's inner-circle are so flawed and complex. In truth, each challenges their relationship with Hawke considerably at one point or another. It shines a light on something very real and very human. Kirkwall really is the best of times and the worst of times, and Hawke's people are a reflection of that. I've adored companions in the series before and since, but no other DA game wrote characters quite as deep and difficult as DA2. (I'm not saying your fave isn't as good. I'm certainly not saying your fave isn't more enjoyable. But just as a whole, DA2's strength was in its character writing across the board, including Hawke's. It's telling that people still react so strongly to these particular characters. Other than Morrigan, they're more divisive than any group before or since).
@cherry k. If you want to enjoy romance (instantly) in DA 2, Anders did fit the whole story of DA 2 very well but Fenris is the character haven't polish enough and has great potential digging in especially after you know what's DA3 and possibly DA4 coming.

I mean, they just assume Fenris and Hawke are together even though he leaves him. It's a very vocal party, no one had anything to say about why Hawke seemed sad or questions regarding what happened between them? For instance. Even if there is an option to get together again, no one else knows that. Or Varric is just that good.
I can see why the Varric lines were cut. Originally, Varric was supposed to be sleazy as hell. Glad they revamped him during development. Hard to see him trying to piss off Merrill.

Like wtf, doing you a favor and you just jump on Fenris and verbally attack him for no reason. Least to say I never bothered to romance Anders because of that. Fenris improved overtime while Anders degraded... *they are opposites and trade places sort of in the end. Fenris was broken but managed to fix himself up a bit while Anders fell apart... or he always was broken*
Varric is forever my favorite character. I really hope he lives through the rest of the DA games. DA4 I’m hoping he will get his da2 personality back. The commentary from him is gold.

So Anders has also lived and experienced being owned, abused, etc. Both Anders and Fenris have common ground, but circumstances make them unable to see it.

Kirkwall was an exception because the Templars basically ruled the city and that would not have flown if it weren't basically a nation unto itself, but even Anders Vivienne and Cullen admit that most circles arent like that, especially the Ferelden and Orlesian circles.
