I've realised a while back that a romance was possible with your companions even if you had gained far too many rivalry points with them. Usually playing as pro-mage freedom Hawke, what better rivalry romance to experience than Fenris'? I also couldn't find a single complete romance video who either rival romanced him, or did so with a female Hawke, so here it goes. Enjoy!
Thanks for posting this! I just finished my first play through if DA2 and I had a FemHawke Mage (pro-mage, too). I made some mistakes with mine so I'm glad to see one played out all the way.
Thank you for posting this, it’s great! I really love the dynamic you put into your Hawke character; she’s down to earth, experienced and sincere whilst she uses sarcasm to diffuse Fenris’ angst like a balloon. Lol, I liked how off guard or deflated he seemed after she would give him the business. Although I cared for Fenris’ character, I wasn’t into the whole bad boy persona and chose to romance Anders (you know, the caring self sacrificing Doctor type who helps in the mage’s struggle); man I regretted that. I couldn’t imagine a pro mage rivalmance working out with Fenris without it seem like their relationship was too dysfunctional for my liking; but I liked how the Hawke here is portrayed as self assured and deflects Fenris ‘strong emotions thus grounding the situation and balancing out the power dynamic. These two feel like two people who truly love each other but the circumstances of their lives has put them greatly at odds with one another. I enjoyed watching them move and grow towards a more loving and functional relationship.

Ahahaha, omg that's amazing! Maybe he's shocked because he knows Hawke is a mage (I mean come on, she runs around carrying a staff everywhere, how does that not scream mage?) and that "elf" hates mages, so he's shocked that Fenris is dating her. Not sure how he would know that Fenris hates mages though, unless Fenris likes to get drunk at the Hanged Man and then go on tangents about how magic is evil and mages should be contained lol.

@@Thisisabunny you can add Oghren to that as well, also the scout dwarf in Inquisition, neither of them can be romanced. though you can flirt with her, but it's only hinted when you get to Tresspasser, and even then it's barely mentioned. i think Bioware has thing about dwarves, or maybe some people within the company aren't fans of the idea. it's weird though because they devote alot of time into the dwarven culture, but then again in the D&D world you don't often see them used in romance terms. now if you play a dwarf you can, but not if that dwarf is a companion or NPC. to be honest Varric's character would need a few changes to make him an option, i think the way his character is, it's hard not to see him as anything more than a rival buddy or friend buddy. some people look at Merrill the same way, i don't see her that way, but the few times i romanced her, i noticed they don't seem like two people in love. it feels like two friends trying to date, i choose sometimes because you can't quite romance Aveline, well you can pursue her, but Bioware didn't fully commit to it. that was when EA first took over, and I'd imagine a few things most likely got rushed, others probably weren't finished. EA always gets in a rush to wanna put something out, so unfortunately Bioware had to make a slight change, you do get one kiss out of it, but in the end Hawke ends up heartbreaken. i think it hurts worse if you play as the male Hawke, Fenris is okay for a female Hawke, but so many people choose him. Anders there's just something about him as a character that just doesn't click with me, it's not because he's a mage or even when he did later, as a romance it felt more one sided. even if you don't use the flirt option much, he's a bit like Sebastián. now he'll flirt with a female Hawke anyway, but there's still a way you can avoid end up in a romance with him. since he makes his intentions known, atleast you know where he stands, if im gonna put in the time to romance someone, I'd like to see the two grow and get to know each other. that's where you have to give Merrill and Fenris the nod, Isabella alot of people like, but Isabella isn't really the type that wants to settle down with one, unless it's Aveline for which they don't get along. so usually if i don't go with fenris with fem Hawke, Isabella is who i go with. with male Hawke it's usually Merrill, some people think a female feels better with Merrill. only Isabella has a certain reaction to it if your Hawke is male, Aveline doesn't say much, but on occasion she'll ask her something about Hawke, and how Merrill is, she couldn't hide her crush if she tried. that's usually if you play a male, with fem Hawke, Merrill has slightly different dialogue, but it's still hinted in a similar way.
I love the way Hawke says "You want to talk about it?" After he kills Hadriana like it's so flippant and snarky given the situation and I can't help laugh when Fenris snaps back "No I don't want to talk about it!"

Every time I play Dragon Age I always romance Alistair, Fenris, and Cullen. Those three went through so much and deserve a chance to find happiness and love. While Alistair didn’t go through as much as my other favorite DA men, he still experienced trauma. Isolde and Varania are two people who I’d love to slap for what they did to Alistair and Fenris. Isolde for abusing and neglecting Alistair for the first 10 years of his life, and Varania for betraying Fenris and nearly bringing him to the man who tortured and raped him repeatedly. I’d love to slap Meredith for making Cullen’s trauma worse but she died in the end.

@@HinataElyonTophHawke likely isn’t dead in their ‘sacrifice’. Flemeth gave a certain prophecy to Hawke, and the name of the mission in DAI lines up exactly with what Flemeth says.
The Grey Warden character may end up dying if they take the sacrifice, but Hawke has something far more in store for them. “Watch for that moment, and when it comes, do NOT hesitate to LEAP! It is only when we jump do we truly learn *if we can fly.”*
By Hawke’s sacrifice, they have transcended something. We don’t know yet, but their sacrifice was the catalyst for Hawke’s true glorious destiny.
Meanwhile, it may send Fenris spiraling, but what would be more romantic than coming back to him against all odds?

I got virtually heartbroken when *spoilers* Fenris chose to join the Templar’s side and I had to kill him...

That's true for any companions' betrayal, Anders too. I note down must confiscate all the special weapons and amulets from Anders so i can sell them =) ! But it's odd why elf would join the templars, he wouldn't want to be involved in politics. He just wanted freedom, as some critics said

I always felt Fenris was meant to be the one romanced. None of the other characters have their own theme song (save Varric and it is only played during the credits and of course Hawke has one)

@@mayacarraway8953 man the 1st time I played I romanced Anders. I knew nothing about the franchise before playing. My husband had told me I should be fine to play it cause he had played origins. The hurt I felt at the end!!! I still am angry at him for how he stomped on my heart. LoL

I’ve got to say class and story wise this is (in my opinion) the best version of Hawk and the romance option that intertwines with the story. Some choices in the game may still be debated but I stand firm on this point: “Fem Hawk + Fenris Romance is best”.

@@NoriniaCannot be possible since Hawke can die in Inquisition. BioWare in DA series gives an option to sacrifice the main character. If they decided to bring Hawke as the main protagonist again it would be perceived as if they ignored the choice of those who left Hawke in the Fade. This is also why our Warden cannot come back. Also why we mainly only get new companions in each game. Most of them can die. Overall i prefer Dragon Age but i think Mass Effect did it better with sticking to Shepard. On the other hand i have nothing against Hawke and Inquisitor and i am happy that they were created.

In fact, the mission’s title is actually a part of a line of prophecy given by Flemeth in DA2.

The mission is titled “Here Lies The Abyss”
The current theory is that very moment is what Flemeth was foretelling, and by choosing Hawke, Hawke will ascend to heights far greater.
But her words also quietly issue a warning. “It is only when you fall that you learn whether you can fly.” If you choose Shroud, he cannot ‘fly’, so he will die. Only Hawke was encouraged *not to hesitate,* and thus has Flemeth’s blessing. Whatever the criteria is to ‘fly’, only Hawke has it, and if Hawke ‘hesitated to fly’, there will definitely be massive consequences for that lack of ‘flying’ in the future games, as that chance won’t come again. (And honestly, their name is Hawk e. Is it really a surprise that they’re the one to ‘fly’?)

Welp guys, I only played Inquisition and decided to watch videos of the previous games and holyyy crapppp, I’m in love with Fenris. After Solas I couldn’t believe I fell in the hole once again. Damn I wish I could play Origins and Dragon Age 2. I need to know more about the world’s lore and history as well. 😭
Origins and 2 are available on steam I believe, both are the ultimate versions, if I’m not mistaken

I'm confused now. I read that Fenris will leave Hawke if they side with the mages unless you have %100 friendship with him. Does being in a romance with him help to keep him on Hawke's side (I dont want to kill him in the final straw when I finally get there)

I'm trying this for the first time and the romance scene after Hadriana didn't trigger, is it really because I flirted with others in Act one ?
Sorry if this is kind of late.
Make sure you complete Questioning Beliefs act 2 for Fenris to start the romance. You can only start a romance with him if you are not in a romance with anyone else. Isabella is tricky since she runs too and the romance flag may not remove. You can use Anders or Merril and refuse to let them move in to break off with Isabella completely.
You can also start the romance after killing Hadriana if you haven’t done his Questioning Beliefs yet, then he will just show up at Hawke’s house the next time you go home.
Edit: You can flirt with anyone in act one, just don’t start a romance with anyone else in act 2.
I still don't understand why you, like everybody else who romances Fenris, let him kill his sister.
You can stop him without it impacting the romance. The sister just runs off and Fenris is especially upset, but there isn't lasting consequence. It's my preferred choice.
Makes me sadder when Hawk dies in inquisition.. and you find out that dwarf buddy is sending word back to him about her death.. Dx

It is just one of the possible dialogue lines with one of the characters.
This game is about killing monsters etc
This is the Romance storyline (or route i guess) of Fenris, one of the characters. The game itself is about making decisions and crafting your own story. So anything that happens in your playthrough could be considered canon. Though there is an “official” canon, which is the best “end” of the game. Romance isn’t a factor in the official canon, and can be carried into the next game in the series and affect dialogue and such.

I highly recommend going back and playing both. I'm replaying them right now and absolutely loving it, these games are utterly amazing ❤
