The Phaeton was such a clever car, all the overengineering was for a reason, and not just for the sake of it. And I, as an engineering student, can't help myself but being a fan of it, even if heavy cars are not my thing.
I experienced it when I wrote my master thesis at VW and should move a Phaeton that was due for scrap. It was freezing and the car seemed completely dead. Only the alarm went off when I unlocked the door manually with the key, no interior lights no nothing. I thought "this is it, this car isn't going anywhere". Because of the alarm going off, somebody opened the window and yelled at me "Schlüssel stecken!". And so I did, I heard a click, and suddenly the car came to life and the engine started like magic. Needless to say, I was VERY impressed!
Very interesting! My A8 only has 1 battery but thats because its the V8 model, if it were the W12 version I imagine it would have the same system as in the Phaeton. I'm glad you're making some content on the Phaeton. I had seen the car in the background of some of your older videos and wondered if you were ever going to make a video on it.
Man, I'm jealous. I remember gobbling up all the promotional material as a kid when this car got launched and thinking it was one of the coolest cars with all of the bells and whistles and custom factory. I was sort of surprised/not surprised at how cheap they are now (more surprised that anyone remembers them) but there's no way I could handle taking care of fixing all of the little gremlins that must lurk in this beast.
The battery from my Polo also lasted 16 years (03/08 - 06/24) . The batteries were just build different then. Much higher quality OEM than now. Had a Mercedes battery last 18 years (2005-2023)
Today 12V energy management systems are way more sophisticated than some might think. It all started with the Phaeton more or less (and similar cars from the era)
Hey Martin, Is there some kind of publicly available technical book or dealer literature that covers the Phaeton's systems? I'd really love to read it. I ask because there's a 200 page "Technical Information Manual" on the Dodge Stealth / Mitsubishi 3000GT that goes in depth on all its infamous systems, and I feel like there should be an equivalent for the Phaeton. I don't mean a user or owner's manual either that tells you how to use the systems, I mean one that tells you how they work with numbers, graphs, diagrams etc like the aforementioned TIM for the 3/S twins.
Hey, the VW group has something called "Selbststudienprogramm" (SSP), which is available in German and English. They explain all technical systems with lots of background information there. The one for the Phaeton batteries for example is SSP272.
i notice you have collection of older cars in general , is there a reason for it ? older cars do look great though , no over design , simple shape and somehow looks less bulky than modern cars.
And usually both batteries are dead after 2 weeks without driving since the Climate Control and Engine Heater kill them. And all 4 Start Modes does not work, especially in the cold when you need them the most. I own a V10 TDi Phaeton for more than 4 years and its a pain. This car is not reliable at all and if you need a car that starts without issues, buy an old MX5. No battery Management, no problems. No electric Trunk, no broken wires. No water in the kessy since Phaeton let rain water run into the Main electronics. The Phaeton is truely the most unreliable car I ever owned and the fastest most comfortable Couch ever
Sounds like you have one of the first years. The solar roof drains need to be cleaned regularly to avoid problems, but that's the same for all cars with roof windows. The climate control just works with the solar roof if sun shines on it and I never had an issue with that function. And for the engine heater, it depends on how often you use it while the engine is off. Never had an issue with broken wires of the trunk. But interesting to hear you had these problems. I am thinking about buying a V10.
Too bad phaeton has a very bland exterior design, if only vw could give a more elegant or stands out design maybe phaeton will have a better sales number
I vote for more Phaeton vids. ☝🏻🗿🥃
oh so sigma you just needed thos emojis there
@Skibidigokyllyourself Yes.
And what's the problem? 🥃🗿

theater ah car revival
We owned a phaeton for 12 years. Best car ever. More content on it please!❤
Bitte mehr Phaeton content. Ein wirklich tolles Auto mit so vielen interessanten Details und einer besonderen Historie. Super Videos bisher 👍
Vielen Dank, kommt.

Short and sweet. Awesome video!
Glad you liked it!
Wonderful. very interesting smart "dual" batteries.
Damn, You got VW Gold.

They ran out of ideas for making it more complicated, so they had get really inventive :)
Apparently the Phaeton never had battery monitoring or coding as such though. 😅 As it should be today tbh.
Entzuckt, danke für solche Infos, LG aus Indien :)
If your phaeton start battery is dead, turn the key to the left, and it will connect the comfort battery and you can start again
Samcrac recently uploaded a video dealing with his convertible Bentley… it’s a good representation of this battery system

A Wonderful Car!!
hehe, autoholistin autofantasiat, a Finnish TH-camr just bought a Phaeton and had problems with the charging system. 😅
It's almost a campervan system....but it's just a car.
Mental !
Batteries in parallel do not have to be the same size, just the same chemistry. It's batteries in series that are best to be the same size.
If you want, the right side "starter" battery could be replaced with a large AGM battery identical to the left side one.
Thanks
Does the Touareg have the same systems as well?
Dual batteries are common on most new cars today, with stop/start. Battery "registration" too.
Cars with stop/start have a special type of battery, certainly not dual batteries!
Reminds me of the batteries in the Bentley

same for the Bentley.
A diesel car with two batteries. Each of different chemistries. And a BMS. Remember; neither battery actually powers the car. How very German.
I don't know about the diesel, but certainly the W12 petrol had this.
