I worked on these in the late 80s and early 90s before giving up the spanners and going into vehicle design for various brands. VW's of the 80s and 90s were true quality cars, well designed, built and with a long life. I had a late mark 2 scirocco which I ran to over 500k miles on the clock and it still looked like a low mileage example. Then a 2003 T4 transporter which I recently sold with over 400k on the clock, 300K of those I put on it with no issues and it still looked clean. But it seems many of the new transporters are struggling to get to 100k without the need for a replacement engine. It's a shame the quality has gone now. My late 2000's Passat was a pain so had to go after 18 months. Last year was my first year buying a non VW/Audi car. I will never buy a VW or Audi again.

This title is wrong - the shown Models are pre-facelift ones with split side windows and grills with 7 ribs. Interior and badges are also the old ones. After facelift in 1986 those features vanished. So it is pre `86 visit!
Was a VW dealer technician when this was made……those plastic film door vapor barriers the woman is installing were a terrible design flaw……I replaced countless numbers and pulled countless carpets due to water intrusion from failed film barriers
@ oh the heater core…..I did hundreds of those when I was at the dealer. I think that recall covered every Golf/Jetta from 1985 to around 1990……it was a ton of vehicles….easy job that paid well, even for warranty pay

This Film is from before 1989, because the cars are pre-facelifts that were produced until the summer of 1987, recognizable by the bars in the front doors and the rearward-positioned exterior mirrors, as well as the front grilles with multiple slats.
Great footage of the "good old days" of VW when they still made reliable cars. I think this was shot earlier than 1989 though. 86 or 87 would be my guess, as these are the pre-facelift mark 2 Golfs. The facelift was produced from 1987 onwards and had different doors/mirrors/windows, badging etc. I wouldn't say no to a tidy Mk2 GTi today actually, or even better....a Corrado!

I just wonder, and maybe someone would give me a proper answer - what could happen to all those press tooling used to make bodyparts like doors, floor, hood etc. Theoretically if it hasnt been scraped, it could be used to make completly new parts? Is VAG grop holds all this equipment in some warehouses?
As far as I know, there's a company under the VAG Group which still produces spare parts for older cars (Volkswagen Classic Parts, located near the Wolfsburg Factory), I dont know however if they still use the original equipment to produce those same spare parts.
Their's a film of VW Beetle production around 1974 to 76 at Emden compared to watching the production of Mk2 Golfs with full automisation of body production to the labour intensive production of Beetles and sub assembling of components I've always been a fan of VW's it's a symbol of a country's rise from the ashes post war to a worldwide giant I hope for the future they don't do any corporate re branding with this EV popularity and stick to the meaning of the name Volkswagen = people's Car

It’s interesting how GM and Ford at around this time stopped designing their own engines entirely and opted for German/Japanese engines for their cars.
What you don't get to see and are never shown is how those new engines battle and how long they take to eventually start for the first time. The workers on this part of the line are especially brutal to them, they rev their absolute guts out, so much so that these engines scream like no engine you've ever heard, being punished. I've seen so many brand new Golf's and Jetta's that have marks in the carpet behind the pedal from where the workers on this part of the line have beaten them HARD on their first start.

but there is a CE1 (original) and CE2 (minor facelift basically small changes) i think ce2 came out in 87 i dont remember

Thats not 1989, those are pre facelift type 19’s . There is a 16v badge shown so late 86 or early 87.

These tools have a lifetime, then they are worn out and get scrapped.
As far as I know, there's a company under the VAG Group which still produces spare parts for older cars (Volkswagen Classic Parts, located near the Wolfsburg Factory), I dont know however if they still use the original equipment to produce those same spare parts.
They might have gone to TAS in Yugoslavia or even the South African factory as the production of the old model continued there?
