I have come to adore what Rarity represents. We've seen her archetype on other shows in the past the "the beauty obsessed shallow girl who's quick to judge others". Originally it was meant to teach little girls not to put too much emphasis on looks and instead focus on what's inside, but over the years I feel this archetype has done more harm than good. Many girls will not openly say to others that they think they look good, because doing so makes you come across as vain. Recently there was a social experiment on tinder where whenever girls got a compliment on her looks she would respond by agreeing and then the boys would take the compliment back. it would often go like: "Hey, you look amazing." "Thanks! I know." "calm down, you're not that great." We teach girls not to own it when they think they look good. And now here's Rarity. A wonderful balance of caring about looks, and caring about other's feelings. Teaching girls that If making yourself or others is your passion you're not shallow for owning it, so long as you remember to be generous and kind too.
MadameTamma I only saw Rarity from the Phoenix Wright crossover, and that's EXACTLY the impression I got from her She immediately became my favorite pony.
I recall Gaston from Beauty and the Beast saying "I know" when La-fue told him what a great hunter he was. it sounds pretentious to me coming from a guy or girl. there's no need for any other response to a compliment other than thank you.
Reg Fife There is a balance which I think Rarity has but Gaston didn't. You don't want to ONLY think and talk about yourself, but at the same time it's important to put some focus on what you like about yourself in order to be confident, and vocalizing what you feel confident about can help. Own it. Openly own it. Encourage other people to openly own how much they like themselves.
+MadameTamma Has Rarity ever responded to a compliment with "I know"? And I have a hard time picturing talking up your talents outside the context of a job interview or a situation where your expertise is needed.
My personal headcannon was Hoity-toity wasn't visiting Ponyville at all originally. Spike went all the way to Canterlot and said "Hey! I know Princess Celestia! My friend is throwing a fashion show! I know Princess Celestia btw!" And I think it was Twilight doing the same thing that made him come back.
I actually just came up with a theory as to where they get their glue from. Usually we humans make glue from hooves and horns. Which is made up of keratin. What ELSE on a cow/horse is made of keratin. Hair. Soooo...I suggest that the glue in the MLP world comes from places like hair salons. Instead of outright throwing away cut hair, they seal it up and send it to glue factories.
I'll never forget this episode, as it's the one that make us SEE Rarity as the element of GENEROSITY in a more fluid way than her episode in Manehatan where she sings "generosity" which was too forced IMO and the episode had a similar message, but more shoehorned, this one gave us two morals while showing rarity's devotion and generosity in full bloom. Also, as an artist who is doing commissions, this episode pretty much represents my work in a nutshell, all the positive and negative things about drawing commissions.
This was the episode that made me suspect Rarity might be best pony instead of Twilight. "A Dog & Pony Show" was the episode that _proved_ to me that Rarity is best pony. "Sisterhooves Social" was the episode that cemented that fact in my brain forever. As far as I'm concerned, Rarity is the only pony to have never once had a bad episode. Even "Simple Ways", which has issues, is merely a hunk of silver in a sea of gold.
Suited for Success is probably my favorite episode of the series to date! It really shows Rarity at her best, which we don't see nearly often enough. Not only did she agree to make ball gowns for all of her friends and work tirelessly for days to make them, she then edited them to her friends' specifications, giving them what they wanted even when they themselves didn't know what they wanted, and then re-edited them back from the costumes they thought they wanted to her much more tasteful original designs at her own expense! It's a lot less contrived than Fullerton's other episodes (though not perfect), and demonstrates both Rarity's generosity and her artistic sensibility perfectly! I don't think the others are necessarily uncharacteristically demanding, though I can certainly see why you would think that. They just got carried away, and lost sight of what they were doing and why they were doing it. There haven't been many episodes focused on Rarity - honestly I think the writers aren't sure what to do with her - so an episode that's about her, that makes her look good, where she doesn't get upstaged by Spike or Sweetie... like I said, probably my favorite episode.
FINALLY I get to talk about Rarity - ok if anyone has been following the trail of my life story then you might of noticed I don't really talk about Rarity - well you try saying anything about her until this episode, she was a bland stereotype who just blended into the background of more important characters - hell in the premier I forgot she existed and when I saw her again I literally said "who the hell is that!? - well this episode and literally every other appearance afterwards made it clear that she was best pony - I don't need to explain why but I will say she is the very soul of why MLP:FIM is such a ground breaking show.
3:31 You say Rarity is your least favorite main character? That's odd, considering you seem to like episodes where she's the main focus: other than this one, you also gave 5-star gold ratings for "Sisterhooves Social" and "Sweet And Elite". (By the way I don't consider an episode like "Look Before You Sleep" a Rarity episode simply because that one is as much about Applejack as it is about Rarity. In my mind for it to be a Rarity episode it has to be more about her than any other charater.) By the way...what did you think of "A Dog And Pony Show"? (That's the one where Rarity gets kidnapped by diamond dogs who want to use her to find jems for them, and Spike and the rest of the mane six try to rescue her.) I can't find your review of it anywhere on youtube!
If I recall correctly, Art of The Dress is a parody of a song from Sesame Street (Unless Sesame Street happened to be parodying the song as well, then I am completely wrong).
i'm way too late to the party but my only overall defence for the rest of the 6 in this one is that they probably don't realise that each of them is being as bad as each other and only assume it's their dress that isn't perfect so don't realise how demanding they're being.
I don't see the problem with the glue. 1. It's still a show targeted towards children, glue is one of the most easily identifiable creative supplies for many of the target age group. 2. It is possible that it is a synthetic glue. Also, with regards to the comment by sakuraxino3, not all parchments are/were made from animal hide, there are plant-based parchments.
2wingo Not always, there are plant-based glues such as Wheatpaste ("Library paste") and several synthetic glues. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_glues#Plant_based_adhesives
Funny thing is that flutershy's knowledge on sewing gets a vague allusion in Rarity Takes Manehatten, as I pointed out in Reactions Are Magic, Fluttershy seems to be the only one who fully appreciates rarity's new fabric.
Glue for clothes DO exist, and it's actually used sometimes. However, it's true that, in a world of ponies, glue seems a little... morbid, until you realize that it could be a resin-based glue.
I can see why some people don't like Rarity, but she represents those kind of people that have bad qualities to them but once you really get to know them, they are real sweethearts and kind persons.
To this day, Suited for Success still remains the only MLP: FIM episode written by Charlotte Fullerton that Mr. Enter classifies as good from beginning to end.
Gregory Cassella oh i see now. i just figured if there were any future episodes after this that currently hold the title. Looks like this is the only episode charlotte fullton did right
At least as far as Mr. Enter is concerned since she is his personal least favorite writer of the show. "Putting Your Hoof Down" was especially painful for him, so much so that he declared it his least favorite episode of the entire series.
If you want to know the full details on why he doesn't like that episode, he wrote an essay about it 2 years ago on his DeviantArt page: mrenter.deviantart.com/journal/Why-I-Hate-Putting-Your-Hoof-Down-448514063
really that doesn't happen a lot anymore they use the keratin (the stuff human nails are made of) in hooves it's similar to how soap was made from animal fat in the olden days. if you really want irony parchment is made from animal hides like sheepskin, goatskin and calth skin especially vellum. which twilight and celestia use in huge quantities. parchment the soilent green of mlp
This was my first episode I watched from MLP I remember because I was very sick that day and there wasn't anything on the TV So I watched this. I loved it :]
I'd say this is my favorite guilty pleasure episode, mostly because it's really good, but part of me still can't get over that it's essentially about dresses and a fashion show. Also, Art of the Dress was my favorite song of season 1 as well, and I didn't even know it was based on another song.
akane saotome Ohhh..... is that common knowledge now? I guess not or otherwise the animators wouldn't have put it in. Or do you see anypony eat lasagna? :P
I love this episode. While I think that Sonic Rainboom was the point the show began to be more than a good show, this episode as well as the last few episodes picked up the quality quite a bit. I like the song, I like everyone in the episode, and had a blast watching it. The weird dresses are ridiculous enough for me to be funny and the beautiful dresses are impressive. The moral is really good, the humor is great, and overall well made, well structured, and well done. My Rating: 5 Out of 5 Stars Gold Wow the show is slowly getting better and better. Looking at each episode in retrospect of what it would become is interesting and a fun experience.
On the subject of the Rainbow Dash being able to capture Rarity's cat and put her in a tree without Rarity noticing, my guess is that Rarity is like me, at least, in that she has a limit on how much input she can handle. In that particular case, my theory is that she was so occupied with her melodramatic depression that she couldn't think of anything else.
8/10 This episode did a great job of showing an artist trying to impress/please their customer, and Rarity is my favorite of the mane 6. The others come off as ungrateful about the first batch of dresses (especially, and in an out of character kinda way, Fluttershy) but they learn their lesson at the end, so it's all good.
basically glue is made out of a substance from hooves (I think you have to boil them down or something), and I'm pretty sure it's usually from horse hooves.
"this episode starts off with Rarity showing off a design for her dress for the Grand Galloping Gala...... to her cat....." Honestly, seems like something I'd do if I designed dresses......I do talk to my animals and ask them things like "Is that too tight?" or "What ya doin' buddy?" and greet them like "Hey, bud" so I can totally see myself showing them things!
Every time glue or marshmallows are shown in an episode it becomes really distracting... even though marshmallows are delicious it's still distracting.
This was a fun episode, especially with the scene with Rarity, with her mane messed up and wearing a robe in a loopy state of depression, where she’s apparently referencing Bette Davis from Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? And she quotes the line from Greta Garbo “I vant to be alone!” Then with the other ponies worried Pinkie pie fears she’ll end up as a crazy cat lady, Twilight says she’s only got one, but Pinkie insists “Give her time!” 😂

I guess the episode was.. SUITED FOR A GOLD!

Also you can make glue from milk and resin.
And aside from my weak joke, glue irl can be made from parts of fish and plants, so it's not unbelievable.
For me, this was one of the episodes (A Dog & Pony Show being the other) that made me realize Tabitha St. Germain is best voice actress ever. :D
There's no such thing as "best pony". It's purely opinion.
Suited for Success is probably my favorite episode of the series to date! It really shows Rarity at her best, which we don't see nearly often enough. I thought you were hating on her, so I disliked and I was like OHHH and immediently liked. I'm glad you agree and went through the process I did.
Snowflakesleepy LPS How could anyone hate Rarity.
CrittersRule247 Does anyone hate Rarity?
Kinako Ishiyama You'd be surprised how many actually do.

"He demands to know.... Who made them." I love the mini pause; made me giggle.
wait.. for what real song is Art of The Dress a parody? i wanna hear it!
If I recall correctly, Art of The Dress is a parody of a song from Sesame Street (Unless Sesame Street happened to be parodying the song as well, then I am completely wrong).
Taken from the Art of the Dress wiki, it is a borrowing of the Sondheim song "Putting it Together" from the musical Sunday in the Park with George.

I feel as though he had has like, PTSD for glue of any kind. I feel you, Enter.
Seth Brandon It's because glue is made from horses/ponies hooves.
I completely forgot that, ohmygod.
It's fine ^-^
Charpony VA Thank you for informing me. xD

Whats with the glue thing? Aren't kids allowed to use glue in America instead of rated M games and weapons?
+MforZorro | Movesets No, organic glue is made from horse bones. You see the problem now?

Isn't glue made of horseshoes?, I'm assuming that horseshoes get replaced just like horses in real life so maybe the glue made from horseshoes.
But this review was made before stuck in the wringer. Why would you point it ou-
...
Oh...
Oh no...
What does glue have to do with horses
basically glue is made out of a substance from hooves (I think you have to boil them down or something), and I'm pretty sure it's usually from horse hooves.
Lunara Hunter do they kill them in the process?
+firegirl660 yes because they kill horses with broken legs so they would kill horses without feet
Kyrin Chase you are stupid
Mrenter: What the buck wrong with you people!?
Because of Rarity I want to have the job that she has, and also Blythe a character from lps had also inspired me.
This episode made Rarity my favourite character.
What song is "Art of the Dress" parodying?
Putting it Together by Stephen Sondheim.
Synystershy
Thanks!
Which real song?
dastorm - sandrude
what is art of the dress a parody of?
Barbara Streisand's bit by bit
+Reg Fife I meant "putting it together"
Rarity is actually my third favorite pony
She definitely has some duds
Well a lot
But her element of generosity overrides it all
Is the glue made of ponies?
Horses Mostly. but yes its Rather Disturbing....Like a Sheep playing a Violin or a Cat and dog eating Chinese food
It can also be made from cows, but everyone seems to forget that.
Yeah, their hooves I believe. But, they could have possibly just made them from the savings of the hoovicures from spas and such.
While horses have been used to make glue, they use a substitute now.
Who's to say it's made of different materials in equestria.
You know some glues are made of of rubber, right?
Tree sap, or milk...
3:31 Whatever happened to the Atomic Betty cartoons?
Um... horses are involved in the production of glue....
What song is Art of the Dress parodying?
+Sarah Schuster I want to know, too.
+Sarah Schuster Actually, just looked it up on google, it's this /watch?v=-836TtoF_5I
What's de real song Called?
2:40: Simple answer... nothing can keep Dash from Pussy.... ~hangs my head in shame~ "sorry... I'll just show myself out."
Competition!
Out of all of the mane 6's (or 5 in this case) bad dresses which do you think is best? for me I say pinkie pie's
3:42 Wait did Rarity make a Mr. Horse reference from Ren and Stimpy?
Every time glue or marshmallows are shown in an episode it becomes really distracting... even though marshmallows are delicious it's still distracting.
Yes, but it's still really distracting in a world populated by horses.
+Shwah Gamers Wait wait wait!? Marshmallows? Why would that be distracting?! You can't be implying...
Insanity Allegra Do you know what marshmallows are made from? I mean I still eat them even knowing, but it's not too terribly bad.
1:14 I memorized that. Why? I dunno.
Not all glue comes from animal protein. Glues are also made from starches, latex, waxes and Vinyl.
I love Rarity. she's adorable
What's that closing music?
4:05 - i shaming these looks is big big problem.
This was a fun episode, especially with the scene with Rarity, with her mane messed up and wearing a robe in a loopy state of depression, where she’s apparently referencing Bette Davis from Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? 3:36 Dang, I know right? It's almost like this show is for little girls.
maybe why you like the song so much is because they actually use transitions :3
I saw this episode this morning
This was my first episode I watched of the show.
Whats the deal with ponys with glue?
(Im lazy to do research :3 )
Because some glue is made of horses hooves.
Rarity is my favorote character. It took a long time to decide that. However, she does lose a lot of her personality post Equestria Girls. sadly.
What's is your problem with glue?
Did Fluttershy say... HANDS?!
WAIT. they are?
I like Rarity in pink
I dont remember any character being looked in the mouth.
Parody of what?
Not a Rarity Torture Porn!!
3:40 you did that on purpose, didn't you?
Rarity is best pon. What you talking bout
