I must say, Enter, I was actually more impressed here than in Dragonshy for a few reasons. First, she is being turned into a statue, while staring down a creature that turns you into a statue while you look into its eyes. She KNOWS this could kill her, yet she forces the cockatrice to back down. This girl has balls of chromium steel. But I find this way more believable than Dragonshy because the Cockatrice still seems to fall under the laws of the "animals" in this world. Inability to speak the same language, being affected by The Stare, and so on (but i'm not sure how Cows and Buffalo fit into all this, since they CAN talk...). All Fluttershy did was scold the dragon, not even using "The Stare", and he could have, and realistically WOULD have just eaten her in a single bite. She wasn't even yelling. Just scolding. In the cockatrice's case, i can understand it being afraid because she didn't back down even while half of her was now rock, so that would give the image that she either didn't care that she was being petrified, or that she had a strong enough will to resist it at least temporarily, and that the cockatrice's powers weren't working as well or as fast as he had hoped. In the Dragon's case, we don't get much of that, other than she just stands up to him and gives him a stern talking to. She's not THAT intimidating at this point in the series, so the wyrm had no reason to start crying, unless he's just a giant pansy.
It bothered me when Mr Enter didn't seem to understand the concept of the stare in this episode but found the dragonshy more believable. In the animal kingdom, staring down an opponent is like scolding to humans. Wolves, bovines, and other animals stare down others to show dominance and power. It's something very common in much of the animal world. Fluttershy communicates best with animals so it would not be out of character if she possessed this ability. In fact it shows that she can be strong when in her element.
I'm actually fine with Fluttershy not immediately explaining what a cockatrice was beyond its appearance for one thing -- she was frightened and panicking. Chances are she didn't mention the petrification part because she was still trying to sort of her thought process out and explain what such a creature was without causing the CMC to panic. Which they did the moment they saw what a cockatrice could do. So yeah, I'd say that's an acceptable situation given what was going on.
I have something to say about the stare too. I think it's a fitting thing for Fluttershy to have. Fluttershy is meek, kind, nurturing and ... perhaps motherly? I believe the stare makes use of her connection to animals in a disapproving motherly way. I do not believe it's a real power, which is why Fluttershy couldn't "Control it". If it hadn't been season 1-ed, it could have been an amazing thing that could have tied into Fluttershy's character. Heck, Discord even says "Not your disapproving eyeballs!" In putting your hoof down. Oh, and good job on the review. You do great making them shore, concise, informative, and objective. Thank you for making it, as well as all your others.
David Spring The reason " a Medusa" has became a mythological creature in and off herself is because depending on the story of Medusa, Medusa was the only gorgon with the ability to petrify.
Android Lg because there's only one multi-headed snake in Greek mythology that I know of, and it's called THE Hydra, therefore if there was more than one of them, indicating one of them would be "a" Hydra. Same with Pegasus: originally, it was just the actual name of ONE winged horse, but it came to be the name of the species.
Exactly, it was THE hydra not A hydra. The Hydra of Lernae was an offspring of Echidna as were THE Cerberus and the THE Nemean lion. None of them were a species and all of them were one of a kind.
Android Lg The problem is that story telling has changed, and with it, classical monsters have been adapted to suit it. Notably, a lot of video game require stock enemies to fill out areas. Stories also build on themselves more than before, in Greco-roman writings, heros and monsters will come and ago in a single work. Modern stories usually build on each other. In greco-roman writings, you can kill the one and only hydra, because when the story is over, everything in the story vanishes. The only recurring element usually was the gods. However, now things have shifted to series, where you want recurring elements to appear.
Minor correction: Medusa of the Greek myths is a Gorgon. I also believe 'Cockatrice' is pronounced with a soft-I, not a hard I. We're not eating rice here. I believe this is the first time Fluttershy's 'Stare' is explored at all, and given that she uses it at other times (despite her vow to only use it in emergencies), it's important to have at least some explanation. It's almost certainly not a racial ability, since no other Pegasi have it, however none of the other Pegasi seem to have Fluttershy's abilities with animals. She's a Beast Tamer, and 'The Stare' is the highest extension of that ability -- to subdue most beasts that would otherwise attack her and her companions. You know, the type she can't calm normally? So it's impressive in that if she puts enough 'spirit' behind it she can halt and then shatter a cockatrice's petrification with it. If she can also taken on the Sharingan and Genjutsu successfully, I'm gonna be laughing pretty hard. I HATE 'Naruto.' This is also the point where my 'First Gear' fanfiction, corresponding to season 1, begins. Gearhead meets Rarity on his way to Ponyville (she's delivering those capes she was making), and entirely avoids the situation in the Everfree Forest. He had no reason to go there at that point, you see, although he uses it to mine resources later. You can also see that by putting him in here, I've avoided some... awkward episodes.
Couple points. 1) I actually thought this was a good episode and funny. The CMC acted like a bunch of hyperactive kids and I didn't have a problem with their shouting of catch phrases either. There is one problem I do have with this episode though. It wasn't obvious the first time I saw this, but the VA for the CMC was not always consistent. For example, when the CMC go to bed, Sweetie Belle definitely talks using Scootaloo's voice. 2) I think personally that "The Stare" isn't compelling an animal against their will. It's more of Fluttershy saying "listen to me. This is important." I also think that the "hammer" scene is more reminiscent of The Three Stooges "Cotton" sketch as opposed to Ducktales, but that is just nitpicking. Overall a good review, just a couple points I do not necessarily agree with.
Honestly, I think you're overdoing the petrification thing. It's been shown plenty of times in fantasy and fantasy games that it's often a reversible condition. Hell, some even use it as a plot point.
If you can't tell by my name, I really characters which a nature theme. And so as everyone finds a creature that quickly gravitate towards, I choose fluttershy. Though, I honestly like the concept of the stare, probably mostly because it further elaborates on her connection to animals, however I never have to think about it to critical since it honestly doesn't seem to pop up to much, but thinking about it, probably because it is never really portrayed as a "good" thing, but as a "necessary" thing. Pardon me because this is going sound very cheesy, but it kind of shows the dark side of interacting with animals. While it is best to be kind and gentle, you also have to be authoritarian with them if you want to obey you, and the stare shows that much better than having Fluttershy hit an animal with something.
Here's the greatest sin of this episode. Sweet, timid, darling Fluttershy is made to babysit the CMC who are being very unruly. We saw her use her infamous Stare at least twice in this episode....on the chickens and the monster. So why not just use it on the kids and get them to mind her? Then she could have avoided the whole mess.
I almost spit my tea when I misheard Therimon as pheromone. For a second I thought Mr. Enter was saying Fluttershy released pheromones and that's why The Stare worked!
7:15 if you HAVE to of all things mention BG - no, petrification doesn't kill you. if you die, your soul in the FR setting goes to the afterlife. doesn't happen to e.g. Branwen who is found petrified. petrification is a state between death and life (aging for example doesn't take effect while petrified). and the fact the game ends when the main character is petrified is because you would get stuck otherwise, not being able to remove the main character from the party...
I dunno, Fluttershy in the early seasons always struck me as generally kind but having a really strong passive aggressive streak that only came out when she got pushed too far. I thought it was a character flaw and I thought it made her more interesting. But I guess you could read it as an inconsistency, because if passive-aggression is what they were going for, they didn't do it very well even at the start. I was rather hoping that as the series went on that would be corrected, instead it just seems to have disappeared and THE STARE is just something she can suddenly do.
I didn't find the CMC THAT annoying... Everyone complaints about their chant, which... I don't have a problem with at all. In fact I rather like it, it's cute. And their screaming is cute, I can't help it they have adorable voices! And I adore Fluttershy's singing AND Sweetie Belle's singing, though for different reasons. Although the stone thing was really disturbing in retrospect...
In Final Fantasy games you can restore someone turned to stone back. You can even in Dungeons and Dragons. And lots of RPG's. I'm not really sure Balder's Gate is the norm on that. Edit: Wait a minute, doesn't Balder's Gate have "Stone to Flesh"
well in most myths the victims of a cockatrice can be turned to normal be defeating or killing the cockatrice that turned them to stone so it makes alil sense in that regard
Just a heads up a basilicas and a cockatrice are the same name for the same creature, that out of the way good review man, your one of my favorite reviews.
I'd actually like to see an episode where Flutters loses her stare, like permanently. As Mr. Enter said, it undermines all that she is, and she doesn't need it anymore. The Breezy episode proved she's learned to give tough love and be firm, making her able to get her way without it, and Dragonshy proved that she can be a badass without it. She just flat out doesn't need the stare and it tends to harm any episode it's in, rather than doing good.
There have been discussions about that. Some say its for the rare animals others say its bad setting. The better question is why is there the equivalent of a zoo next to the everfree forest? Fluttershy might be smart enough to stay away from it but the animals obviously arent
Technically, the stare was introduce in DragonShy when she stood up to the dragon. They actually show it by zooming in a little on her eyes when she was talking down to it. This episode capitalized on it because more than likely everyone realized that she had developed it some how.
I never played any games where someone have been turned into stone, ice, or any other material. So I didn't have a problem with it. Discord was turned to stone, but he was fine. My head canon is that turning someone into stone is like freezing them in time, so it's not even a temporarily kill. But I know that's just my head canon.
I was one of those people who really didn't like the CMC during the first season. They took episodes away from the mane 6 and they had several childish traits that I really hate, one being the screaming you mentioned. They did start growing on me later down the line but first impressions can take a while to get over.
Takisan111 How they took episodes way form the mane six? The mane six had more episodes then they did. Why shouldn’t they be allow to have their own episodes?
6.5/10 the lesson is nice, but the CMC come off as VERY annoying in this episode. And even though it's awesome to see Fluttershy stand up to the cockatrice, "the stare" is just dumb...like way dumber than Pinkie Pie's "pinkie sense" And I dislike the song in this one, after 'show stoppers' and this I was convinced that CMC songs would never sound good...except until 'flight to the finish'
I think "The Stare" is supposed to be the sort of latent capacity that a shy person could have. People often have traits that remain latent because of how they contradict primary traits. Also, in the treatment and disciplining of animals it is important to have authority alongside the capacity of persuasion and charm
I don't see why people think Sweetie Belle will get a singing cutie mark. in the older episodes, she was a fantastic singer. nowadays she's just...okay in my opinion. but I'll let you in on a secret. although she does now, like many voice actors on this show, it used to be, Claire Corlett, Sweetie Belle's voice actress, didn't do her own singing. instead, her singing voice was provided by Michelle Creber, Applebloom's voice actress.
Sometimes even the best reviewers are just plain damn _wrong_. Mr.Enter, I believe that you are just plain damn wrong on this one. I for one love the CMC even when they're being annoying. It really is part of their charm.
Soufriere Oh come on. "Children are funny when they are annoying" is _completely_ subjective. I think annoying kids are annoying and I do not like most CMC episodes as well as other ones because I do not relate to the problems of young children.
Perhaps it was Final Fantasy style petrification which can be reversed. Although not by the monster that did it unless they knew Esuna and were under your control.
Petrification in most of the RPGs I have played is just freezing the character in time, In FF game all it takes to fix is a basic cure item called soft. I have only head of petrification being deadly in one game that I have played. They are most likely going with the FF type of petrification.
This episode was just good. I liked how Fluttershy tried to help the CMC, but the CMC themselves in the episode at first were obnoxious. Luckily, they do get better and get less obnoxious as the episode goes along. The Stare itself sounds like a great concept. Maybe even an amazing one. It just wasn't brought to it's fullest potential in this episode. The cockatrice (sorry if I spelled it wrong) has a fine design. It's good. Just not great. But not bad either. 3 Stars Out of 5 Stars Silver
That spiel about being petrified is the same in the video game EarthBound. Except they call it Diamondized... oh yeah you're already a fan of Earthbound and undertale because you play their music at the end during credits sometimes. We could be friends if this world and life wasn't so hectic and busy.
If this is Final Fantasy, the only way to cure Stone is with an anti Stone Spell, or a Golden Needle. If this is Narnia, Aslan's Breath restores petrified creatures. In Boktai, it depends. If you get hit by a Cockatrice's or the Gorgon Carmilla's Petrification Ray, it's only temporary, but if Master Otenko gets hit by it, he's turned to stone, then crumbles to dust. But since he's the essence of the Sun, he comes back later. So, Petrification doesn't always mean DEAD dead, unless of course they're shattered, which I don't think ANYONE could survive. In LOTR, if certain Trolls are caught in sunlight, they turn to stone, and as far as I know they don't return to normal. This doesn't seem to affect ALL trolls though, since we see some trolls out in broad daylight during the fights at Minias Tirith and the Black Gate.
For me, petrification basically turns the flesh into stone. The victim is still alive, but dead as well. They're in a shadow state between life and death, and unless the petrification is reversed, they're not going to come out of it naturally. If they are smashed while they are petrified then they're definitely crossing over to the dead state.
***** Petrification and its concept have been drastically altered through its use. Normally, I would think that crack would indeed have some effect on Twilight, at least like a skull fracture. But you must remember this is a kid's show. Besides, the crack could be explained as being 'healed' by the cockatrice upon it's reversal of the petrification powers. I'm not a genius, so I don't claim to have a true answer. At the end of the day we should agree that it is simply cartoon logic.
Yeah. But it does remind me of 8-bit Theatre, where White Mage healed Black Belt of his petrification, even though the top of his head had been knocked off. When the stone was removed, his blood and brains sprayed everywhere.
Simple answer to why twilight is okay is part of the Rules of Magic. And yes MLPFIM DOES FOLLOW THE RULES! Twilight is turn to stone by magic. And one of the main rules of magic is That every spell cast can be undone by an equal or stronger spell.
yeah about Twilight being turned into stone, that happened in the first pokemon movie (ash gets turned into stone then brought back by all the pokemon's tears *yet again they actually explain how to turn him back before*) and i agree with you i don't really like this episode either l:P i have to say this is a bland episode
It Actually they Fudged up again. A Cockatice turns things into stone with a Deadly Bite. Also you can Save your Character by using Cleric Spell called Stone to Flesh.
Petrification works differently in different series. In both Final Fantasy and Earthbound, petrification takes away your ability to attack, be attacked or do anything. In terms of what that means for the player, it's the same thing as collapsing, which may or may not be the same as dying, depending on your interpretation. However, in both games, you still retain HP, meaning that you're still alive. You can be brought back from petrification with all your HP. So I disagree with the argument about Twilight being "dead" based on the rules of one series. And a different series, at that.
In Final Fantasy, at least FF1 and 2, if you're stone, it's the same thing as "dead" but can't be cured by a Phoenix Down or Church. Has to be cured with a Gold Needle or anti stone spell. You don't gain EXP and can't act. But you are correct about them being able to be revived at full HP.
I kinda' like the fact that the most timid pony of all has a scary mind-control tactic that she can't control. Just don't catch her in heat though. No seriously, f you're a guy, DON'T!.
I'm not a brony by any definition and frankly could care less about MLP; however, I've always been taught to give something a try before criticizing it. Honestly, I have to say it's not that bad, definitely better than some of the other trash that comes on television nowadays.
FiM to me is like the antithesis of (modern) Spongebob. Modern Spongebob has a premise I like applied to writing and plots that are stupid or boring. FiM takes a premise I tend to find stupid or boring but makes it enjoyable with quality effort and writing.
hmm....this show has some nicely developed and complex characters, dunno if it was good writing or just dumb luck, still, didn't expect it, don't think anyone did xD
Twilight goes to zecora for some special tea, and ends up stoned
Haha this is great
Stolen joke.

I think "The Stare" is supposed to be the sort of latent capacity that a shy person could have. People often have traits that remain latent because of how they contradict primary traits. Also, in the treatment and disciplining of animals it is important to have authority alongside the capacity of persuasion and charm
you're not gonna get a lot of xp without encountering dangerous creatures, DUH
I don't see why people think Sweetie Belle will get a singing cutie mark. in the older episodes, she was a fantastic singer. nowadays she's just...okay in my opinion. but I'll let you in on a secret. although she does now, like many voice actors on this show, it used to be, Claire Corlett, Sweetie Belle's voice actress, didn't do her own singing. instead, her singing voice was provided by Michelle Creber, Applebloom's voice actress.
3:12 Fluttershy's paused face is amazing. I've seen it on Twilight before though...
Holy shit, did Enter just quote a brazilian writer? Didn't see that coming.
And to think... after this, Chris Savino would create the loud house
Sometimes even the best reviewers are just plain damn _wrong_. Mr.Enter, I believe that you are just plain damn wrong on this one. I for one love the CMC even when they're being annoying. It really is part of their charm.
Well he probably doesn't have children of his own so he wouldn't know that
Soufriere Oh come on. "Children are funny when they are annoying" is _completely_ subjective. I think annoying kids are annoying and I do not like most CMC episodes as well as other ones because I do not relate to the problems of young children.
Soufriere
He isn’t wrong or right and neither are you.
Pheromone music? I thought you were saying "theremin" at first, but the second time I definitely heard "pheromone."
cockatrice? Good Mythical Morning?
4:21 There are two chickens in the CMC now?
Perhaps it was Final Fantasy style petrification which can be reversed. Although not by the monster that did it unless they knew Esuna and were under your control.
Do you think it would've been better if fluttershy didn't use the stare on her chickens, only the cockatrice?

***** Am I the only one who thinks that crack on Twilight's head after she fell over should've had some repercussions?
It didn't work in FFIV.
Simple answer to why twilight is okay is part of the Rules of Magic. And yes MLPFIM DOES FOLLOW THE RULES!
Twilight is turn to stone by magic. And one of the main rules of magic is That every spell cast can be undone by an equal or stronger spell.
Chris Savino left to create his own show ;)
People are going to reply rudely for me saying this, but:
I just realized the snail had the same color scheme as Snails.
There's actually "stone to flesh" spells that counteract petrification in DnD games, why it wasn't included in BG I'm not sure
"A medusa" XD
yeah about Twilight being turned into stone, that happened in the first pokemon movie (ash gets turned into stone then brought back by all the pokemon's tears *yet again they actually explain how to turn him back before*) and i agree with you i don't really like this episode either l:P i have to say this is a bland episode
Mr enter compared to the annoyances I go through everyday the CMC (or whatever) are pretty fucking tame so I don't know whether to agree or not
Evil forest of Doom. I have to remember that.
Applebloom - Scootaloo! [Sparta Nameless SQE V2 Remix]
Are you going to review season 5
It Actually they Fudged up again. A Cockatice turns things into stone with a Deadly Bite.
Also you can Save your Character by using Cleric Spell called Stone to Flesh.
true. cockatrice - bite; basilisk & medusa - gaze
dnd you need a little thing called stone to flesh.
Flesh to Scroll Stone.
In the older ones it was a potion as well. don't know if that's still the case though. Haven't needed it.
why is the screen in reverse
So he can use the clips without the video being flagged or removed.
Should I buy Baldur's Gate: Enhanced edition?
Thanks!
"Fluttershy decides to put her hoof down-" was that reference intentional?
Lion Blaze I guess he didn't know at the time
haha I guess so xD
Lion Blaze lol yeah. But anyway he's going to love season 6
With real life, entertainment and technology and up to 10 seasons of a show or more animated and live action.
***** I was thinking of FFVI, but I think it's the same where it can only be cured by a Gold Needle or magic.
7:20 Flesh to Stone // Stone to Flesh
Are you guys sure she doesn't have haoshucu Haki? Did I get the word right?
Thanks for pronouncing Cockatrice properly, whenever I hear Cockatreese, it hurts my ears.
I didn't know that was a ducktales reference
whats the game name
Scootaloo MISSING WINGS!!
3:37 XD HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA
i mean 8:37
i don't know, i found their cheer to be cute
