Am I the only one who's happy that they removed the original ending? Lightning Dust shows no remorse for almost causing the death of five ponies, and her punishment is to be demoted? What the hell?
They removed it because they wanted to leave the implication that Lightning Dust got completely removed at the end of Wonderbolt Academy. June 15, 2019, 12:12pm *(SPOILER)* Just like how The Simpsons's A Star is Torn ended with the implication that Lisa won the Springfield children American Idol because the boy competing with her got booed and she was applauded, and F is for Family's Landing the Plane ended with the implication that Frank got his job at Mohican Airways back because Scoop and Roger Dunbarton were no longer around to keep him fired.
I've been wondering why Lightening Dust and Rainbow Dash were put on the same team at all. They're both daring ponies with alpha type personalities and a lot of confidence. I think it would have made more sense to make them both lead ponies on separate teams.
I think it would be even cooler if Michelle Rodriguez got to voice another pegasus who got to be a team with Rainbow Dash. I am sure Michelle Rodriguez and Ashleigh Ball have tons in common. June 15, 2019, 12:09pm
I have to say, I totally agree with you on this review. However, I think that Rainbowdash went along with what Lightning Dust was doing because Spitfire Made Lightning the Leadpony. Seeing someone you greatly respect say something like that makes Rainbow think that it's always a good thing. Also, on the cloud thing, I believe that Rainbow packed the clouds tight enough where the cloud would be too dense to fall through.
Something that always gets under my skin is how people complain about Spitfire "not recognizing" RBD. I LOVE the way you worded it. "Here, she's on the job, wading out new recruits. It's not the time to be friendly and warm, if you know what I mean." It's nice to see someone understands that.
As arrogant as Lightning Dust is, I have to agree with her about one thing though, and that's the "best of the best" line. You can't have others holding back the team or slowing you down in moments of danger and rescues, especially if the Wonderbolts function like the military. Not to sound mean either, but I'm actually surprised those other ponies were accepted because they came off as unprepared and seemed even cowardly at times, where they seriously the best they could find?
you mean the ones where they try to be heroes and end up looking like dumbasses? Because last time i checked you can be a hero without being a defense force, and the same thing goes for celebrity guest. Pitaat
Well they could have just been acting as heroes. I mean there is no proof they were sent there in the first place. And considering the speed its more likely they were just in the area at the time
Jeez, first Gilda the Griffon, now Lightning Dust...why does it seem like everyone Rainbow Dash makes friends with, except for the other members of the mane six, turn out to be concieted, self-centered a-holes?
And I like that Spitfire isn't so much of a dick-bag that she'll just answer questions about her decisions with the standard "Because I'M THE LEADER HERE!!! Now GET BACK OUT THERE OR I'LL BUST YOU DOWN TO K.P.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" No, if somepony doesn't agree with a decision she made, Spitfire will calmly explain HOW she arrived at the decision.
0:47 There is a feeling of overwhelming happiness when you learn that one of your favorite youtubers has referenced another of your favorite youtubers, especially if they don’t have very similar channels.
I say it was physics, Rainbow made the cloud dense enough to momentarily become something like a liquid due to increase in pressure, This explains the change in color and the reexpansion after the bounce. Also twilight would not have needed the cloud walking spell, the academy is on a mountain. I also say that pegasi do not have pegasi magic in order to walk on clouds, they just have hollow bones much like birds, this means that they are less dense, and would be able to break through clouds if they were, lets say in free fall, (fluttershy in cutey mark chronicles)
so by the end of this, isnt rainbow a wonder now? or not, because after this she still has the motive of " i want to be a wonderbolt" and its actually annoying, slightly.
I just had a thought, about the comment about Rainbowdash not knowing they use the cloud walking spell in the heat of the moment; it IS the heat of the moment, and Rainbowdash is a Pegasus, who grew up around pegasi, has spent the week around other pegasi, and her oldest friend in said friend group is also a Pegasus. She wasn't thinking clearly she was probably doing the first thing that came to her mind and wasn't thinking about the fact that her friends might fall through. They just coincidentally of their own foresight used the cloud walking spell.
I'm not sure if this really makes sense, but I think the cloud trampoline part was rainbow dash condensing it to be somewhat solid....silly I know, but I guess that was what they were going for.
I totally didn't notice that Spitfire noticed Rainbow Dash's wing was hurt... Not sure if that makes her actions better or worse. She's not COMPLETELY oblivious, like I thought she was, but uh... yeah, I dunno about that. Here's hoping we see Lightning Dust again! And yeah, this was a pretty awesome episode, ending and lapses in logic aside.
About the part where rainbow saves the others with a cloud, I always thought that the cloud walking spell was permanent. You only need to cast it once, and you can always walk on clouds from then on. And I guess the stress of the moment can explain Fluttershy not immediately flying...
+garlicxlr I agree. Even if clouds don't work that way, it's like I've come to always say, "My Little Pony makes science cry." (The beginning of Hurricane Fluttershy is my reference point for that.)
So Merriweather's biggest strenght AND weakness is writing jerk characters? I can see that being a good thing, if we weaponize Merriweather's writing style for an antagonist or slapstick target.
It might be the Top Gun fan inside me, (it's the first movie I EVER saw in my life) but this is one of my favorite episodes. Yeah the ending shouldve been rewritten, but I liked how it shows there is always someone just as good or even better than you at what you love. I also applaud the writers for sticking Rainbow and Lightening on the same team instead of the cliche of putting the two best on opposite teams. And Rainbow switches between an homage to Iceman and an homage to Goose throughout the episode: When she arrives she's basically Iceman, she knows she's good, but decides to let her flying do the talking while Lightning boasts 24/7 like Maverick. Then Rainbow tries to get Lightning to slow down and realize they ARE the best team and they don't have to show off to their CO every five seconds, like Goose tried to tell Maverick. But, I really wish we only had the one Pinkie scene where she wants to deliver a care package. I wanted to see Pegasi push themselves as hard as F-14 pilots dammit! Besides the ending, that's really my only gripe, the story flip flops just as we get more interested in Rainbow's story. I'm well aware that I'm not a good reviewer of TV shows or movies, but I'm trying my best.
So this episode. Keep in mind that the day I am making this comment is on November 4th, 2018, after "The Washouts" from S8 came out, but I won't let Lightning Dust's return in that episode or how that episode follows this one up affect my feelings on this episode in retrospect. With that being said, this episode is still a really, REALLY great episode. The plot was quite engaging, due to the conflict being something that is both believable for Rainbow's character and the way Wonderbolts become....well, Wonderbolts being essentially like a boot camp was really enjoyable, especially since those type of episodes usually I have a soft spot for as I like seeing the character get better and better as they endure more intense training to become a great soldier, or in this case, a great Wonderbolt. Lightning Dust herself is a great foil to Rainbow Dash that leaves an impact on both Rainbow Dash's character and the audience. She is not too mean to where she is hateable, but she is also ain't the nicest pony around and also shows Rainbow what happens when being competitive and trying to be the best goes to far, which lead to still one of my favorite moments for Rainbow's character in the whole show, with her willing to give up something that she wanted to accomplish for just about her entire life for her friends, representing her Element of Harmony and showing how much growth she has had in just 3 seasons alone. The rest of the characters were highly enjoyable and never overshadowed the episode, with each getting a good amount of screentime. Though I do feel that they could have cut back on the subplot with Pinkie for a bit. Not a bad subplot, but it drags on for a bit too long and isn't really either too funny or too enjoyable, which is probably besides the ending, which felt rushed. While the show did recently reveal what happened to Lightning Dust after this episode, if you were to judge it based on this episode alone without seeing that, it would still come off as rushed and even with the context of what would come, while it would help a bit, it still wouldn't change too much. Overall, I really liked, dare I say, even LOVE this episode. It is a major high point of the season aside from the last 2 episodes and definitely a high point in terms of Rainbow Dash episodes in general. 5 Out of 5 Stars Gold 29/65 Stars
I'm sure Strebiskunk mentioned this, But clouds do not work that way. With the exception of Fluttershy, even a really thick cloud wouldn't be able to support a solid horse let alone four.
I NEED YOUR OPINION ON THE WASHOUTS. I know you're not into mlp really anymore. But it was my favorite thing you did. ;-; I'm just curious about what you think on some newer episodes.
your removing a point for RD's rescue can actually be revoked if you consider that Twilight's cloud walking spell is permanent. There is actually evidence for this in Baby Cakes where we see Pinkie holding a cloud when the Cakes look for a baby sitter.
The shadowbolts were made from Nightmare Moon's magic to try to stop Rainbow from letting the ponies get to the old castle. Just because Rainbow dressed up as one doesn't mean they're a real thing.
maybe the cloudwalking spell dosn´t expire, so it probably was in effect since it was first cast, but wasn´t relevant, because ther was no reason for the mane six to walk on clouds until this episode
(reads the description. Stops at the very end) "I've been in the Danger Zone east of the Pacific Ocean, west of London England, south of Mars and north of Hell! Yeah!"
I know I make a LOT of RvB references, but it's become very easy to compare Lighting and Dash to Felix and Tucker, respectively. There's probably a better comparison, but this is who they remind me of...
I love the cover pic, did you do that yourself? And I think this is my favorite episode of S3 even with the ending and all of the other flaws. Lightning Dust always reminded me of discorded dash for some reason...
You know, I always kind of assumed that the walking-on-clouds spell never wore off... I think it was only the wings that had a pre-determined expiration date... Still leaves worrying about Rarity, of course, but at this point, such close friends may have just decided they should all be able to walk on clouds and cast it on her too.
Lightning Dust learns her lesson instead of just being sent away like "GTBO of my academy". Rainbow Dash gets a medal for being "best in the class". And she said Spitfire would keep an eye out for her in case she wants Rainbow to join them.
I disagree with you on the cloud part. I don't think we're not to assume twilight used a cloud spell to save them, Rainbow Dash just made the cloud dense enough for them to not sink though it.
If I may be completely honest? I respectfully disagree with you on this episode; on my list, this one was one of the 'worst' of Season 3, to me. The plot felt really shaky; you made mention of that with trimming Pinkie's part in the story (to be honest, I felt that she was excruciatingly annoying in this episode), I found the overall plot to feel kind of shallow, and the ending felt really abrupt. I did not like Spitfire's role in the episode; 'Drill Sergeant Nasty' does not an endearing character trait make. That the issues with Dust grew to the intensity they did doesn't exactly shine well on her leadership ability... or the way the Academy is organized. Finally, and this can vary, granted, depending on the way you take it, but it seemed to me, for the most part, that Lightning was simply following Spitfire's orders/words about 'being the best' and was punished for it. I don't know, maybe I'm looking into it the wrong way (and I do grant that she didn't seem too broken up about the danger that Rainbow's friends were put in (though, that brings up a whole slew of other questions, as if the Wonderbolts really are supposed to be military, then the balloon shouldn't have been allowed to head to the Academy, anyway).) but it's things like that that made me feel that the episode was seriously lacking and was not well-written. Yes, it was one of the best portrayals of Rainbow since Season 2 had started (though I liked Sleepless in Ponyville quite a bit; more so than this one), but that, to me, is one gem in a lot of mud.
Drill Seargent Nasty isn't endearing, but it's almost always a great role. They're harsh but fair, have a strong moral compass, teach the hero a lesson, and garner a lot of respect from both those around them, and the viewers. I went out of this episode respecting Spitfire a lot more than before, since before she was just another wonderbolt, whereas now she's hard-grafting, honourable veteran. Also, I think that FIM really needed one of these, and Spitfire was as good a choice as any, since the Wonderbolts were pretty one-dimensional, and it's nice to give such a 'cool' character some depth
encase some of you guys didn't understand , the clip of some one saying "oh no they changed the voice , they changed his voice , oh wait i don't care" was a refrense to PeanutButterGamer for those who don't know (this coment was ritten by Harrison Missell)
I think there should have been an episode with LD and Trixie together. I mean, they're actually really alike when you think about it. They're both egotistical, think they're better at magic/flying than they actually are, and both desperately want to outshine a member of the Mane 6 (Twilight and Rainbow Dash) I honestly really like LD and wish she could have had more screen time and personality development, so that's just my idea, but it seems I'm in the minority of people who like her or wanted her to reform, so whatever.
Ya I wish they cut those scenes. That is what keep this episode from perfections. Plus you forget that Merry made everyone like assholes here but luckily its not to much use.
touché Dashie but Twilight said in the episode "Sonic Rainboom" that the spell isn´t permanent so it didn't really work clouds work in kinda the same way for ponies like for us you can´t stay on them if you squeeze them tight they won´t get magically hardened am i rly debating about physical "laws" from a animated show?
Evil Dash I'm not quite sure who your talking to, but clouds are made of really small droplets of water, and when you crush really small droplets of water together, guess what! they make a larger droplets!
Personally, I really did not like this episode. For one, Lightning Dust's character is, as you said, "A good way to play off of Rainbow Dash". My issue with her character is more or less how she acted in the scene after Rainbow Dash saved her friends. She came off too arrogant in how she spoke of the others mostly being Merriweather's way of creating antagonists. It worked better when you could question if Lightning Dust's methods were wrong as she had sound reasoning for most of the things she did. My biggest issue though has to be with Spitfire at the end of the episode. She claims to have learned a lesson from Rainbow Dash, but it practically seems as if Lightning Dust had been kicked out of the academy with the up in the air ending, thus not showing to have learned a thing. Yes, Lightning Dust's methods were considered wrong in the end. However, Spitfire supported her the whole episode only for that ending to occur whereas showing she had learned her lesson would be putting Lightning Dust as Rainbow Dash's wing pony. That way Lightning Dust could learn from it. She did outperform everybody in the first trial and can keep up if not out fly Rainbow Dash. So why in the world did they decide that was a good ending rather than using the cut script?
I think the B-17 and B-29 Flying Fortress And Superfortress are more Famous but the Spitfire is Definetly up in top 5 of the Most Famous WWII planes.Ps:I know this Even though I didn't study the Second worldwar in School yet. Here where I am do we learn nothing about WWI or two until 10th grade, because Germany.
Yeah, I get that but still... In hurricane Fluttershy we still see it take a while to start a regular tornado in the beginning of the "spin cycle" but I digress...
Boby15991 ugh in swarm of the century rainbow made a tornado on her own plus again that was a larger tornado made with tons of pegasi meaning of course it takes longer to form
Am I the only one who's happy that they removed the original ending? Lightning Dust shows no remorse for almost causing the death of five ponies, and her punishment is to be demoted? What the hell?
Yeah, that's also kind of why I liked the ending shown to us in spite of it ending off where it did.
They removed it because they wanted to leave the implication that Lightning Dust got completely removed at the end of Wonderbolt Academy. June 15, 2019, 12:12pm

Yeah, but the plot wouldn't really work if LD and RD weren't on the same team.
It's contrivance. It doesn't make sense for them to be on the same team.

there IS this theory that misery loves company. what if RBD is a jerk...or hiding something?
I always saw it as kind of hinting what kind of person Rainbow might be if she didn't have her friends positively influencing her.

I say it was physics, Rainbow made the cloud dense enough to momentarily become something like a liquid due to increase in pressure, This explains the change in color and the reexpansion after the bounce. Also twilight would not have needed the cloud walking spell, the academy is on a mountain.

I just assumed that since the cloud got darker when RB shaped it, she made it more "solid" somehow and that's how she caught them.
garlicxlr Yup, exactly my thoughts.
+garlicxlr I agree. Even if clouds don't work that way, it's like I've come to always say, "My Little Pony makes science cry." (The beginning of Hurricane Fluttershy is my reference point for that.)

Really hope they bring lightning dust back in the show. Maybe she'll be the main foucus in a cutie map ep
The thumbnail is so funny!
0:45 hey! its PBG!
Wait, you know about PBG? Also, how did I get here.
Wait
Are the Wonderbolts the Air Force for Equistria?
yes
Yeah, litterally.
yup

They're both egotistical, think they're better at magic/flying than they actually are, and both desperately want to outshine a member of the Mane 6 (Twilight and Rainbow Dash)
I honestly really like LD and wish she could have had more screen time and personality development, so that's just my idea, but it seems I'm in the minority of people who like her or wanted her to reform, so whatever.
Ya I wish they cut those scenes. That is what keep this episode from perfections. Plus you forget that Merry made everyone like assholes here but luckily its not to much use.
That pbg reference XD
They didn't change Spitfire's voice.
Hey dude guess who's writing Pinkie Apple Pie, that episode where pinkie is co starring with the Apple Family... Merriweather William.
You are fucking with me right?
Yes... I read the wrong thing it's a new writer writing the episode Merriweather is doing Bats... or did since it was this morning.
"Wonderbolts Academy" That's the title you're going with? You're not even gonna give us an article? Just flat-out "Wonderbolts Academy"? Whatever.
OOOOOOOOR The cloud walking spell could have been permanent to the first time they used it.
Evil Dash and rocks are candy cuz i want to
the mighty power of imagination
touché Dashie
but Twilight said in the episode "Sonic Rainboom" that the spell isn´t permanent so it didn't really work
clouds work in kinda the same way for ponies like for us
you can´t stay on them if you squeeze them tight they won´t get magically hardened
am i rly debating about physical "laws" from a animated show?
Evil Dash Wouldn't crushing the cloud create a HUGE glob of water?
Evil Dash I'm not quite sure who your talking to, but clouds are made of really small droplets of water, and when you crush really small droplets of water together, guess what! they make a larger droplets!
because
Physics
Wait a minute Fluttershy knows that she can fly right?
Yay! PBG!
This vid's thumbnail makes me laugh XD
Thank for pbg reference
Am i the only one who got kinda upset when Fluttershy was falling even though she's a pegasus and knows how to fly?? ._.
Actually, Spitfire's using the same VA, she just sounds different.
Dat PBG reference.
Does Anyone Know that Spitfire was Actualy a Hunter For the Royal Air Force in World war 2 I know Bad Pun is a Bad Pun: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spitfire
It was only the most famous aircraft in World War II. I'd be surprised if anyone who's studied the war in school didn't know about it.
The main plot was good, but I found the sub-plot (other mane 5, mail box) to be forced and unnecessary.
How did you know I like PBG?
Actually, that is the same voice actress for Spitfire.. She just sounds different.
3:59 Here it takes 2 pegisi to make a tornado while in hurricane fluttershy, it takes quite a few. Oh well, screw continuity! . _ .
I AM SO HAPPY THERE IS A PBG CAMEO IN THIS QAQ
there's nothing...
Eh, I never felt much from this episode since it felt too predictable. Then again I'm biased.
I want to like this episode I really do, but every time I watch it leaves a bad taste in my mouth despite the fact it has Rainbow Dash's finest hour!
PBG reference
What WAS the original script? Stop acting like everyone knows!
