One interpretation of the dragon egg test is that is was a Kobayashi Maru to teach the students humility, before the actual test starts. Twilight Sparkle was not expected to actually hatch the egg, or else all students would have baby dragons.
I always liked the idea that Twilight's egg test was Kobayashi Maru kinda test, where whether you passed or failed is irrelevant but they instead look at what someone would do in this situation or how they would react to it. The teachers never expected Twilight to hatch the egg, they just wanted to see what she'll do. I know it's completely unsupported by the show, but the show also doesn't disprove it either. So it's just another fun head canon. Also, I love the vids keep it up.
10/10 This is my favorite episode of season 1! All the backstories were a lot of fun. And revealing their special bond at the end was very heartwarming.
This episode is not only one of my favorites of season 1, but also of the entire show. Loved seeing the filly main 6 and getting some cool backstory info!
Best episode of Season 1 in my opinion. 1st off, like you said, each story had their own flavour. 2nd, we are given a ton of information in under 20 minutes. And 3rd, those filly designs are... So... Cute, Dah!
"And that's how Equestria was made! ... Maybe on the way home I can tell you the story of how I got my cutie mark!" No matter how many times I hear it, I burst out laughing.
*idly plays game on cell phone while listening to video* *bursts out in laughter at the mention of the avatar state* Ow my stomach, that was just too much XD
When you said fly through rings, that made me realize a game for the nintendo 64 called Superman 64. I never played it, but I saw how awful that game was.
This episode was great. I like how they can tell 6 small, but nice backstories. Each of which is for one of the Mane Six. It doesn't feel jam packed and bloated, it feels natural and the pacing is really good. Another thing I like is how each story connects to the last story and helps each of the Mane Six get their cutie marks. I love the line "And that's how Equestria was made," and I just enjoy so much about it. The only issues I had, was that I thought Scootaloo was a bit much with her wanting to get to RD to hear her story that badly and the ending is a little bit forced. But other than that, it's really great. My Rating: 5 Out Of 5 Stars Gold
Wait, so Spike, I'm kinda of confused about that. Does that mean that Spike was taken from his parents without their permission, and how have we never seen them before?!?!?! Great new fan theory.......
Which Spongebob part? The boulder/rock joke or the fact that Animated Atrocities (which started with New Spongebob) was founded as a punishment for taking so much time with these reuploads?
Judging by what the characters think of Rainbow, and the contrast of how the fans see Rainbow, I'm guessing they wanted to write her as some awesome character who so confident, bombastic and makes everyone else feel good about themselves. Like Kamina. But it's pretty obvious they failed, because there's no scene with Scootaloo getting teased by Diamond and Silver, and then Rainbow shows up and says "Walk with your head high, kid. Don't listen to those ugly girls. Don't believe in yourself - believe in the me that believes in you!"
This one is probably in my top 3 episodes of MLP, if not my absolute favorite. And it shows they were connected before they ever even met with the obvious exception being Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash. Oh, and Pinkie growing up as a gloomy rock farmer is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
Those Bullies are in the Cloud Factory in Sonic Rainboom and they say that they dont belive in it but they were there when Rainbow Dash first Preformed it
My only complaint with the episode is the fact that it kind of ignores the continuity of the show when it comes to the topic of the Sonic Rainboom. In the episode about the Sonic Rainboom, everyone thought it was an old pony tale. In fact, the ponies she competed against flat out told her she never did it and never could when this episode shows they actually raced against her the first time she made one. In fact, the race had spectators. Surely the word spread across Equestria that the Sonic Rainboom wasn't just a pony tale and Rainbow Dash would've become famous. That's just a nitpick, though.
True I noticed that too xD I started thinking well maybe what happened is because she was unable to do it for awhile the ponies who didn't see it started to say it's fake and untrue It could have started out as a rumour how it was a one off lucky mistake that and she can't do it again Over time with continuing failures it began to look like she never did it Then maybe the ponies who were there started to doubt themselves; the ones racing were just kids, they could pass it off as their imaginations. Exaggerations of what happened? With the majority not believing in it; they hoped on the band wagon and started saying the same thing. They dislike her, so they'd want to discredit her. The other spectators probably had something similar happen Where they start doubting what they saw; and since the majority is saying she didn't do it, they eventually just submit to it or if they do believe in it; they stop speaking out against it in the fear of being wrong and looked down upon for it.
+WhiteWolfSnowy Well Rainbow did do it by accident the first time, and wasn't able to do it again till years later. So maybe they just never put two and two together that Rainbow was the one who caused it? It would explain why no one seems to think she could actually do it. It would also explain why Rainbow kept trying to do one and even had a name for it since it's also something she can do (at least I figure so since she is the only one with a rainbow flight trail).
Can anyone explain to me precisely what happened to Applejack's parents? I've heard that they are dead, but is it true? And if so, what happened? I mean, is it ever explicitly explained?
Their both dead, it's explained in Apple Family Reunion kinda, at the end of the episode there were two shotting stars that the storyboard artist said that they represented Applejacks Parents. THE END
April Showers Power Rangers, a "Kids show" over its lifetime (1993-NOW), has implied, talked about and even SHOWN characters dying or being killed. Power Rangers in Space, 1998: Has the Red Ranger KILL the MENTOR of the Ranger's for most of the past 6 YEARS in order to stop a galaxy-wide conquest of evil. The energy wave that does this halting of evil DESTROYS 99.9% of the evil forces (turning basically ALL of them into piles of sandy dust where the soldiers once stood) whilst it purifies 3 Head Villains (Rita - MMPR S1-S3, Zedd - MMPR S2-S3, Divatox - Turbo) to their Human(-ish) forms (Rita later going on to be the Mystic Mother and Source of all Good Magic in 2006's Mystic Force, due to their Japanese actresses being the same). Power Rangers Lost Galaxy, 1999 - During the second part of a team-up with the previous team of Rangers, one of a set of Evil Rangers that got released the episode prior starts to rip apart a planet with an evil sword and the morpher of the Space Pink Ranger, only to be stopped by Galaxy Pink SACRIFICING HERSELF to stop the destruction and save the others (and the galaxy in consequence). The spirit of the dead Ranger guides her power source into the hands of the reformed Villainess of the Space Rangers (who was also sister of Red Space) to help the ex-villain redeem herself. The finale of the season bringing back the dead Ranger (along with the occupants of a planet turned to stone in the opening of the series) when the Rangers have finished off their Big Bad and returned the source of the powers to whence they came (itself very Arthurian). Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue, 2000 - During flashbacks, it's shown that the Captain/Mentor of the team had to make a tough decision ~10 years prior in letting his son being taken away by the astral projection of a Demon (this season's villain) to be returned on the boy's 21st birthday, else the Captain, his son ~AND~ his daughter would have all died that night due to the circumstances of a crash. This same Demon-raised son-of-the-Mentor becomes the 6th Ranger for the team, faces Death by Magic Tattoo when he morphed until he destroys the source of the curse, and has to save the Red Ranger from being dragged into HELL by the Head Villainess (who was dragged in thanks to the same demon who saved the boy after shit she did to the guy) in the finale. Power Rangers Time Force, 2001 - KILLS OFF the Red Ranger right in the FIRST EPISODE before the rest of what will become the team goes back in time and unlocks their powers by the genetic ancestor (and proverbial twin due to same actor playing both roles) of the Red Ranger 1,000 years down the line. Later on, the Current Red Ranger's dad is involved in an incident and would otherwise be dead were it not for the intervention of Future Red Ranger (who was brought back to life by the warping of time due to the events of the series) coming back in time and using future tech to heal the guy. In the finale, the 6th Ranger is injured and hands his powers off to the Red Ranger (Japanese counterpart DIES instead of major not-quite-killing injuries) in order to fight the finale fight, records in the Future saying the Red Ranger died during the fight, but the rest of his team (who were pretty much forced back to their time period) defy what "history" says and join him in the finale fight (thus rewriting history so Red Ranger lives). Power Rangers Wild Force, 2002 - Red Ranger's parents were killed when he was a child by their "friend" and fellow scientist who turns into the Head Villain of the series (and we're shown this through the classic "Shadows on the wall while action happens off-screen"), and during the series 4 of the Rangers are pretty much killed off and forced by the God of their Zords to solve a puzzle to return to life and give Red a new power-up, not to mention when one of the villains is killed then brought back to life through her friend fishing for her spirit with their horn after her death. By the end of the series, the scientist who killed Red's parents, became the Big Bad, and was defeated by the Rangers, is emotionally 'buried' alongside Red's parents grave (which is also technically Red's grave as well, as he was presumed to have been killed alongside them in the Amazon), as a kind of forgiveness of the guy. Power Rangers Ninja Storm, 2003 - The parents of the Thunder Rangers (who are adopted brothers, presumably Navy is the adopted one) are killed some time before the events of the show and their GHOSTS appear in order to stop the path of revenge the boys were going on after they were fed lies and misinformation about their parents' death. Power Rangers Dino Thunder, 2004 - Zeltrax, one of the villains for the series is revealed to be wanting revenge on Tommy (the Black Ranger) who was his friend, after Tommy instead of Terrance (Zeltrax's former name) got a job with Mercer (who becomes then splits off from the Head Villain) before an accident befell Terrance who was then rebuild by the Head Villain as Zeltrax. Power Rangers SPD, 2005 - Anubis 'Doggie' Cruger the Mentor is the LAST OF HIS KIND (at least until his wife is revealed to be alive and held captive by the Head Villain), as the rest of his species was WIPED OUT during one of the early attacks by the Head Villain as he conquered most of the galaxy. Power Rangers RPM, 2009 - Best way to describe the tone and backstory of this season is it's Mad Max set in Terminator with HAL 9000 as Skynet, leading the Terminator armies to wipe the world clear of Humans dropped into Power Rangers, and the only place left safe for Humans is the domed city of Corinth, which holds probably a half-million people at BEST. Yeah, Humanity was pretty much screwed over, and all our Alien allies on other planets stayed the hell away from Earth lest Venjix took over their ships and spread his reign to the rest of the populated galaxy.
Provided the show isn't purposely designed to insult the intelligence of the viewer and dumb things down to bright colours and fast action, the rating doesn't matter too much when the point was that any "kids show" (and I use the term mockingly here) can deal with mature content such as death. Thomas the friggen Tank Engine (at least before the CGI-era) often used the concept of engines being cut up for scrap as a metaphor for Death, and engines being saved from scrapyards as being rescued from the clutches of death. And that show's kept a solid G rating (the same as MLP:FiM, whilst PR has kept a plain PG (15) since we don't bother with multiple copies of each particular level) through out it's life here. Rev. W. Awdry (the author of the original Thomas The Tank Engine stories) created them for his son Christopher, and there's more than once instance in their combined works where an engine is saved from scrap only for the rest of that engine's brethren to be scrapped if they weren't lucky enough to be put in museums or otherwise kept running as pieces of history (Flying Scotsman, anybody?).
It was actually a nice nod of continuity. Pinkie: "your aunt pinkie pie's got it all taken care of" Fluttershy: "I'm a year older than you..." Fluttershy looks different because she's the eldest of the mane six. She's a little further in her development.
I think one of the reasons why Rainbow Dash's backstory was last was because Hasbro had some weird poll thing that had people vote on which backstory they should use. If it were showed any sooner there wouldn't be as much anticipation.
guys remember the traditional pony body size is for 15-30 ( found out by digibrony.) so for a pony like lyra to be the same size as before she would have to be 30 then back then she would be 15. but we'll never know.
I would've liked it a little more if all their backstories were connected to each other, even in small ways, like a web. I mean, Applejack's aunt & uncle were clearly fancy wasps. Have Rarity's family in that dinner group, & the bunnies she scares at the end could've run to fluttershy in her story. Twilight's story would be easy to link to the others with her magical outburst. Just...Little things.
I seriously ran into this one guy on an MLP forum years ago, who was DETERMINED to prove that this episode wasn't that good, or at the very least, explain why he didn't like it, pointing out a bunch of minor, nitpicky flaws about it, one of which being Rainbow Dash coming to Fluttershy's side, when Lauren Faust said RD wasn' the "sisterly" sort. I honestly which I could remember his criticisms better, because I find it all fascinating; kind of a shining example that nothing about this show is unanimous. But yeah, I love this episode, I love the backstories they give us, and I love how cute the mane 6 look as fillies! Though it is weird that Scootaloo suddenly hates singing after she wants to be a singer in Show Stoppers... And yeah, it's frustrating to see her ONCE AGAIN miss the freaking obvious.
You know there may be more to two of the mane six back stories? Applejack and pinkie. Applejack: where is Applebloom? Applebloom says she never knew her parents. And pinkie because of this line: "And that how Equestria was made on the way back I might tell you my cutie mark story. It's a gem." Two might be hidding the truth
do I need more proof that Tim Curry is the father of fluttershy,I mean only a mad Dr. would make something so adorable, that would instantly kill you. Tim Curry the mad scientist weapon cuteness!
One thing wrong: twilites backstory: she is trying to see princess celestia: LYRA is there looking older: TWILITE looked younger: now, twilite looks older, and Lyra stays same age. WAAAAAAAAAAA???
Finally! Let's all hope copyright ID is finally done with its reign of terror. I haven't watched much Spongebob, is this one of those REALLY bad episodes?
"It's not just a boulder, it's a rock." I was so happy when I heard that. I love old Spongebob.
A _rock_?! _That's_ my destiny?
pgj1997 Your destiny is Tom, Rarity, don't fight it.
I nearly cried at that reference not joking
+Voltorb1993 i really dont think that Tabitha St. Germain and Tom Kenny even know each other.
Disney Guardian I think he meant the rock, from.... one of the episodes
I just love the fact that if rainbow dash had never raced it would have literally caused the end of the world.
One interpretation of the dragon egg test is that is was a Kobayashi Maru to teach the students humility, before the actual test starts. Twilight Sparkle was not expected to actually hatch the egg, or else all students would have baby dragons.

I really like the "Pinkie goes Poof" part XDDD
if the rainboom never happened, the apocalypse would break out.(no joke)
I'm guessing you seen season five final
Brad Treais 10 times at least at least. mosty because of the fallout equestria part.
This episode is not only one of my favorites of season 1, but also of the entire show. Loved seeing the filly main 6 and getting some cool backstory info!

OMG I LOVE YOU FOR THAT SPONGEBOB REFERENCE!
...That GOOD Spongebob reference.
I know, Pizza Delivery is one of my favorite episodes.
"And that's how Equestria was made! ... Maybe on the way home I can tell you the story of how I got my cutie mark!" No matter how many times I hear it, I burst out laughing.
*idly plays game on cell phone while listening to video*
*bursts out in laughter at the mention of the avatar state*
Ow my stomach, that was just too much XD
"And Pinkie goes poof."
I think the giggle I did there could be turned into a GIF. If only I had a camera.

Why can't they show a picture of the apple siblings parents?!
Because of you
Very funny.
It's not just boulder it's a rock a rrrrooocckkkk A rock thats my destiny!!!!!!
What is your problem horn? I follow you all the way out here for a rock! HMPHH! DUMB Rock!
Wait, so Spike, I'm kinda of confused about that. Does that mean that Spike was taken from his parents without their permission, and how have we never seen them before?!?!?! Great new fan theory.......
The spongebob part perfect

This is personally my favorite episode of season 1. My second is Party of One
Let's sing a song!
Scootaloo: NO!
Those Bullies are in the Cloud Factory in Sonic Rainboom and they say that they dont belive in it but they were there when Rainbow Dash first Preformed it
1:19 proves that FlutterDash is best ship
i also loved this for fleshing them out some more mostly seeing how dash stood up to bullies for flutter-shy
OMGG That SpongeBob reference made me LOL! Great Work!
young fluttershy looks akward
young pinkie pie looks SOOO CCUUUUTE
baby applejack in family apreciation day made me die
My only complaint with the episode is the fact that it kind of ignores the continuity of the show when it comes to the topic of the Sonic Rainboom. I started thinking well maybe what happened is because she was unable to do it for awhile the ponies who didn't see it started to say it's fake and untrue
It could have started out as a rumour how it was a one off lucky mistake that and she can't do it again
Over time with continuing failures it began to look like she never did it
Then maybe the ponies who were there started to doubt themselves; the ones racing were just kids, they could pass it off as their imaginations. Exaggerations of what happened? With the majority not believing in it; they hoped on the band wagon and started saying the same thing. They dislike her, so they'd want to discredit her.
The other spectators probably had something similar happen
Where they start doubting what they saw; and since the majority is saying she didn't do it, they eventually just submit to it or if they do believe in it; they stop speaking out against it in the fear of being wrong and looked down upon for it.

Am I the only one who thinks Applejack wanting to be a fancy city pony is really out of character?
I guess she was different as a kid, but still.
I'd say that it's not really that out of character. If anything, it works.
R.I.P. Hub channel.
The saved by butterflies scene reminds me of the G3 MLP episode "Dancing in the Clouds."
Yes, it is one of those episodes.
Can anyone explain to me precisely what happened to Applejack's parents? I've heard that they are dead, but is it true? And if so, what happened?

Their both dead, it's explained in Apple Family Reunion kinda, at the end of the episode there were two shotting stars that the storyboard artist said that they represented Applejacks Parents. THE END
I think I sort of remember that. I guess they wouldn't go into too much detail, given that it /is/ a show for children.

The only deference is Power Rangers was rated TV-Y7 or TV-PG and MLP:FiM is rated TV-Y

And Twilight had her cutie mark before Celestia brings attention to itm, leading to Twilight, and then us, seeing it.
How do you know the egg was taken? Considerinh a main character canonically has dead parents, why not another?
***** Applejack's parents are dead.
***** Twilight is the main protagonist. Applejack, Spike, and the rest of the Mane 6 are all main characters.
Just one episode for now.
i have seen some patern, that m.a. Larson writhen episodes usualy are realy good
How come Fluttershy's filly form was so gangly compared to the others? It looks kinda awkward.
Is it bad that I don't notice anything different about Fillyshy compared to the other fillies? She looks exactly the same body wise to me.
crashandcortex Look closely; her legs are lot skinnier than the others are
It was actually a nice nod of continuity.
Pinkie: "your aunt pinkie pie's got it all taken care of"
Fluttershy: "I'm a year older than you..."
Fluttershy looks different because she's the eldest of the mane six. She's a little further in her development.
Oh cool!! I get it!! You're right; I'm amazed they remembered that so well for this segment! Thanks!
Why does everyone love the song, I hate this song, this song makes my ears BLEED!!!!!!!!!
I think one of the reasons why Rainbow Dash's backstory was last was because Hasbro had some weird poll thing that had people vote on which backstory they should use. If it were showed any sooner there wouldn't be as much anticipation.
what did you say you needed insulin for?
it was so sweet and cute that gave him diabetes
p.s. it's a joke
It seems too contrived that Rainbow dash breaking the sound barrier would set the entire series in motion
Kyle Campbell what? no.
guys remember the traditional pony body size is for 15-30 ( found out by digibrony.) so for a pony like lyra to be the same size as before she would have to be 30 then back then she would be 15. but we'll never know.

Pinkie has three sisters. Strangely, Maud didn't appear in this episode, but she was at the party, as shown in "Pinkie Pride"
Voltorb1993
yeah I was about to say...
What play was rarity At Schoo
And yeah, it's frustrating to see her ONCE AGAIN miss the freaking obvious.
where was maud in pinkie's flash back?
+Ninja Greg Show Already at boulder college. (or a rock concert?)
+ardawen eh heh eh heh, maud likes rocks so make rock puns :-|
I thought she was the grey-lavender one
Pinkie Pie in a rock farm makes me chortle for some reason.
Omg Fluttershy looks even more cuter in her backstory
You know there may be more to two of the mane six back stories? Applejack and pinkie. Applejack: where is Applebloom? Applebloom says she never knew her parents. And pinkie because of this line: "And that how Equestria was made on the way back I might tell you my cutie mark story. It's a gem." Two might be hidding the truth
Filly Pinkamena goodness is a wonderful thing.
How old is Lyra?
I don't think a scootaloo is handicapped if fluttershy has a hard time flying at that age maybe she will learn to fly soon
2:13 Best edit ever!!
Did they watch Digimon particularly the episode when the Digidestined find out they all saw Greymon?
I think you misspelled Pokemon
Bryce Dandurand No mistake ... Digimon ... as in Digimon the movie and the episode where Kair is possessed.
ohhh digimon. you mean the thing that's inferior to pokemon in every way?
Bryce Dandurand You mean superior?
serpirior is a pokemon
Am I the only one that dislikes they went for the "Square plain buildings" that we well have here.. I expected some fancy architect..
do I need more proof that Tim Curry is the father of fluttershy,I mean only a mad Dr. would make something so adorable, that would instantly kill you. Tim Curry the mad scientist weapon cuteness!
I remember when i saw this back in 2012
One thing wrong: twilites backstory: she is trying to see princess celestia: LYRA is there looking older: TWILITE looked younger: now, twilite looks older, and Lyra stays same age. WAAAAAAAAAAA???
It's spelled Twilight, not twilite. Also, learn to capitalize, and use periods.
Finally! Let's all hope copyright ID is finally done with its reign of terror. I haven't watched much Spongebob, is this one of those REALLY bad episodes?
N'aww, filly AppleJack is too cute.
One day the Cutie Mark Crusaders will travel to Saddle Arabia and meet the Cutie Mark Jihadists. It will not end well.
Best. Season. One. Episode. Period.
I did not know that ponies played superman 64
I do think it was an alright episode, but the "twist" was 100% obvious from the start.
Best episode by far in season one.
am i the only one who thought apple bloom already knew rainbow dashs cutie mark tale in call of the cutie
OMG! A giant rock!
Avatar state LOL!
