In a way the PS3 felt like a bridging system that continued the PS2's generation (innovative and unique games, great backwards compatibility and new releases of older IPs) until the point near the end where it slowly turned into the more serious and hardcore Sony that became noticeable on PS4. Don't get me wrong, I still play on modern Sony systems, but I just wish that they'd respect their past more. I salute you PS3! Great video Hikiko.

Early last year I had to replace my PS3's disc laser. It was at that time when I realised how much my PS3 meant to me. The thought of losing the ability to play my PS3 games honestly made me sad. I have nostalgic memories with the PS3 and still play it often. Its library is so diverse and so underrated as a whole.
Thanks for highlighting some of the great games it has to offer in this great video! The PS3's legendary legacy will live on.

I just got my 80GB CECHE01's "YLOD" fixed, solder around the GPU started to crack, had it re-soldered, with new thermal paste put on and it was as good as new.
As a celebration I've ordered it a 1TB Firecuda SSHD, and on top of that,by chance I came across and purchased a Sony HMZ-T3W while looking for a Playstation 3D display.

I recommend jailbreaking your PS3 with PS3 Hen, and only playing digital backups of your games. There's even an option to rip your discs directly to the drive, if I remember correctly. All completely legal as long as you only play your own backups and that will help preserve the life of the laser I think.

Still use my PS3 daily. It's a great media center even in 2023. I store my Bandcamp purchases and other MP3 files locally. Spotify also runs great. CD playback is there too, though I only own a small collection of them, might grow it though! The music visualizer is great. I have a small TV in the corner of my room with a PS3 connected, it's my music center. Started storing all my good photos on it too, since it acts as a nice photoframe when not in use. I didn't use any of these features until late last year, having played most of my PS3's backlog at this point.

  • @luxusaz

I think one of the PS3's greatest fortes that made it stand out among its contemporaries
is that its region-free. Meaning the PS3 selection actually extends beyond your local region making the entire vast world its actual library. There are some games that were exclusively released in one specific region and nowhere else. To this day I keep stumbling over perculair oddities in certain regions (be it Europe, the US, Japan, eastern asian territoies, etc.) that I had no idea actually existed. Some games never made it across your borders and vice versa. The Wikipedia overview listing all the disc releases isnt actually fully comprehensive.
Kutaragi went on record saying that the PS3 would be the last console he'd
ever make (you can notice the slow gradual shift into what became modern Sony/SIE after he left). Looking back Im starting to think the initial price seemed justified given the rich featureset it came with incl. free online. Especially In comparison to how little we get today even if were paying a bit less. He wanted the PS3 to be the ultimate gaming and media device youd ever need. Frankly I think Sony were too early to jump on the 8th generation wagon. If you look at Nintendo theyre still rocking 7th generation graphics and enjoying plenty of success. Sony couldve continued doing the same thing instead of shifting a generation for slightly better graphics while driving down game development budgets to allow for more creative risk.
Hopefully fans will keep it alive for a long time to come.

Y’know, looking back at the PS3 at launch, $600 was a STEAL for what it offered at the time right out of the box!
I think it was the marketing that really harmed the PS3s image. The weird adverts, the odd direction Sony was rooting for, the price, and the lack of launch games the PS3 was intended for, the gamers.
To think now, the PS3 was practically future proof! I just always wonder what the PS3 COULD have been if the launch models actually sold well. :/

If Sony did a Nintendo and didn't upgrade graphics power i would have ditched PlayStation like I did Nintendo. They would have lost their entire customer base bcus they don't have the kids market, nor the original IPS to pull off what Nintendo did. Adults want better graphics along with better gameplay. Nintendo games haven't changed much since Wii.

True, the PS3 was the last PS console with a personality. If you mod the standard fan to a 19 blade fan, upgrade the power supply to a more power efficient one, and drill some holes at the bottom of the console around where the fan would be. Take care of it and it’s the best PS console without a doubt.

Anyway, great video covering some of the truly exclusive aspects of the PS3. Even I didn’t realise having a SSD installed rather than a HDD can potentially help load times for installed games, I’ll have to look into that at some point.

5:34 You actually don't need an adapter like that to use a DS4 on a PS3. You can just pair the controller normally just by going to the peripheral settings. You don't get six axis, home button or vibration support though. If you are on CFW you could also use the PS3XPad plugin which should give you vibration, home button and six axis support, you just need to use a bluetooth dongle like you are here if you are wanting wireless.
I mostly use my PS3 as a PS1 machine these days since RPCS3 exists and the ps3 is the only PS1 capable system that can play games on a network share so I can have all my games on a NAS instead of having a large hard drive for every single system.

There is a design flaw inside the PS3 controller: the internal wire connector for all the buttons goes to a central wire hub that is held in place with the assistance of a piece of foam. Yes, that's right, foam. This piece of foam disintegrates over time and the wire hub doesn't make proper contact causing phantom analog inputs.
There is an easy fix - open the controller and replace that piece of foam with any kind of spacer you want (non-metallic). I used a thin piece of wood, but you can use paper, cardboard, etc. I've done it for 4 of my PS3 controllers and they all work perfectly now.

Always feel like I'm the only one who loved the PS3 controller! It charges super quick and has fantastic battery life. To fix the issue you demonstrated, it's a dirty connection between the button membrane the motherboard of the controller. Give it a little clean with IPA and it'll be as good as new! Definitely recommend. I use it more than the PS4/PS5 controller and is my main PC controller as well :D

I think this PR statement was a bit of a fakeout. I think they really couldn't manage to emulate the PS3 so they spun it; and they do emulate all earlier consoles, but they want you to just buy the games again rather than allow you to stick a disc into the tray.
It also might be true in a way, because i mean, most of these consoles sold, they only ever play CoD and FIFA the newest versions, people at large don't really care that much, they're not really invested into gaming as a piece of culture, but as a mere time waster, and those that are can generally upkeep older consoles because no emulation would ever be 100%. So from their point of view, they aren't really losing sales that much.

I was actually thinking of getting some stuff before the PS3 Store , but this vid got me interested in a few more games to consider before it shuts down. Mainly longest day, siren blood curse, and Tokyo jungle, which I never considered before but now I am.
Folklore, MGS4, and Demon souls were definite highlights of the ps3 library for me, as well as Drakengard 3, Killzone 2, and Resistance. Yakuza Dead souls I think really deserves a re-release like the other games, as it suffers from slowdown and is a genuinely really fun zombie shooter. It's not the best game in the series for me as I think 2 and 4 are better, but I got a huge soft spot for it and think it deserves a second chance.

PS3 is also really nice for easy access to cheap (though digital) PS1 import games through the Japanese store. Buying LSD Dream Emulator for like ten bucks is one of my best gaming purchases, and it was also cool to finally buy a copy of Metal Gear Solid Integral and be able to check out the unlockable fully first person mode I'd seen mentioned in version comparison posts for years online. You could also theoretically do this with a Vita but managing multiple accounts between regions is a huge pain there.

Even to this day I still play on the PS3. PS3 has more fun games to play & try out that seem to be lacking on PS4/PS5 consoles. Plus, they are cheaper, but it depends on the game you are buying, since some PS3 games, especially online are too damn expensive to buy & own physically. As for the games to buy from PSN, unless you buy a PSN card, you are out of luck to buy any games digitally on the system. There are so many games for the PS3 that it's pretty hard to buy & own them all without wasting too much of your wallet.

I'd really like to find one that #1 works and 2# has fully functional Sixaxis and pressure sensitive buttons (face buttons, dpad and shoulder buttons are all pressure sensitive on the official DS3) but maybe that's too much to expect from a third party controller.
I have one that _tried_ lol. The Sixaxis is fully functional, tested in Journey and MGS4, but there is only pressure sensitivity on the face buttons and dpad and it doesn't work very well. I was able to test it a little bit on MGS3 by using the triangle button to zoom to varying degrees in cutscenes, and by soft or hard pressing the X button to crouch or crawl from the standing position. Those both worked, but the half press on square to ready Snake's gun, and half press on circle to grab a guard non-leathally, both failed to work. So there's obviously a fault or calibration issue there.
I hope that one day someone tests and compiles a list of good ones. I mean really, for 99% of games all you need is one that has functioning buttons. But some of the big PS3 exclusives such as Killzone 2, MGS4, Folklore, require the gimmicks for completion.

I actually played MGS5 from start to finish on PS3, maybe a year or two after its release, because at the time I didn't think I'd ever buy the Piece of Shit 4. Honestly thought it ran fine despite the obvious technical issues, and was even quite impressive considering how old the hardware it was running on. Still, I think I should have never played it. Great gameplay, but the story was a huge let down for me, and the maps were full of nothing, with maybe two enemy bases that were on par with the ones found in the previous games. And replacing Snake's voice actor after so many years... what a load of shit. Kojima's obsession with movie stars is the reason I can't play death stranding. I know it will just take me out of the experience constantly even though it looked like a very interesting game.
