    I started getting into the world of photography a lot around christmas time when i got my camera. Its not a dslr or anywhere near that level. But the zoom and the picture quality is insane. I was looking at nikons p900. But it was upwards of $700-$800. So i started looking around a bit more and came across the kodak az901 that funtions similar to a dslr. But i wanna say the focal length is like 22-1980mm for a total of 90x optical zoom. Then it has 4x digital for a total of 360x for like $500. In my opinion it was a steal and a really good entrance camera. It allowed for me to learn how to be a better photographer and shoot in manual mode. Before i was only shooting in automatic. Now i only shoot in manual. There are some things it definitly lacks in and could be better. But for $500 i got 90x optical zoom, 20mp, i love it. Thing can see planets and stars. My moon shots before i got it were terrible. Now they are insane

    The 150-600 lenses from Sigma and Tamron are probably the best long lenses for the money. The image stabilizers make a huge difference, and the lenses are soooo much sharper. With the ability to crop photos or even video, a soft lens like this doesn't make sense. I would not add a 2X converter to those, I'd crop in post. I think your results will be better.

    Great Review, and good to see that you are getting similar results as I do, as I have the same lens. But I bought it really only for the moon, and I am very pleased with it for this purpose. What I found to make it work was that I do not use not more than 1100mm focal length on my Pentax. Focussing is a pain, but using magnified live view and focus peaking helps a lot. And then I take 30 to 50 shots and use Autostakkert to stack them. I get brillinat high resolution images of the moon out of this that you normally expect to come only from a Telescope.

    But I got an alternative. I bought a vintage Cosina 100-500mm lens on ebay for 100 Euros (I´m living in Germany). Of course this lens is fully manual too. I use it with my Olympus M4/3 resulting in a crop factor of 2. So I get a good focal length - and the lens gives a very usable image quality.

    Thanks Moe! What you have reported does not really surprise me. I had seen a comment elsewhere suggesting that one might get as good or better images by using a smaller but higher quality / shorter focal length / less zoom / larger aperture lens and then cropping it. My first camera last year was the Canon M50 and I use the 70- 300 mm lens to get the moon and it was decent.. for $500 camera and a lens I paid $90 for. I was pretty happy. Fast forward a year and I'm shooting with the Canon EOS R and I pretty much own about $12,000 in lenses now. But I don't have anything further then the 70-200 f2.8 ... so since I sold my little M50 and bought a Canon 80d. I decided to use my Canon 80d and my Tamron 18-400mm lens. And because it's a crop sensor camera I'm getting about 640 mm in the end... I did some moonshots the other day and posted them on Instagram and those things are razor sharp! Now I know that's a 400 to $500 lens so it's a little bit better quality but even with that lens it's not an L Series lens. It's also one of those lenses that when you push it all the way to 400 MM you get some softness around the edges. But since the moon was in the middle while I cropped in. It was super super Sharp!

  • @kazeshiii
    @kazeshiii 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Haven't seen anyone else mention it here but Opteka actually sells(makes?) a mirror lens (Catadioptric telescope really) that's way more compact than this long boi. It's a 500mm f/6.3 lens with T mount. Contrast is probably poor compared to the 600mm but it doesn't really matter if your goal is to shoot the moon. Just bought one with the T-ring adapter and 2x teleconverter for $110. Just waiting for it to arrive.

  • @stephthimonier6023
    @stephthimonier6023 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Would you agree that specifically regarding the sharpness, what prevents this lens from yielding better results is the fact that the focus ring does not have enough travel (in order to increase focus precision) ? It seems to me that, from an engineering perspective, it should not be hard for the designers to implement a larger focus travel, without drastically impacting the lens manufacturing price. Also, if we make abstraction of the sharpness, what did you think of the colors, tones and light rendered by the lens ?

    Comparing pictures from different times of the day isn't fair, then factor in the atmosphere, you can have the cheapest or most expensive lens but if that lens has a very long focal length, the atmosphere wins every time. That view of the bridge is about the best you can expect unless you have an exceptionally rare day where the atmosphere is perfect. As someone who has been an amateur astronomer for a long time, one of the biggest issue people coming into the hobby have is focusing, not sure why, on telescopes, focusers can have micro focusing to give that little bit extra sharpness but i have never had issues with a standard rack and pinion focuser but some people do. Cool video.

    @notloki3140 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can buy a used bridge camera with a 50x optical zoom for less than 100, and in general you will get better results for far await subjects, not to mention how compact that setup is in comparison. Or spend way more and go for the Nikon P900 or P1000 for anywhere between $300 and $1000.
    300mm is all you need for a DSLR, and older lenses with that zoom are cheap as hell nowadays for most crop DSLRs.

    Mohamed, good afternoon or friends, good afternoon I already have that zoom but after 2 months I take it apart and clean it, to avoid that dirt, and I ask you to suggest that the tripod supports the weight of this zoom, I hope your suggestions, thank you very much

    I have the 75-300mm lens and since I’m into aviation I take pictures of planes at high altitudes and it’s good lens but they don’t get close enough so if I use these lens then I’ll be able to get better closer pics

    Ya know how baseball players put a weighted donut on their bats when they're waiting to come to the plate? Maybe something similar would work to keep it from moving.

    You need a tripod without the center column to reduce your vibration.

    You could just buy a medium focal length on 60 or 70 maybe an ATM M telescope and buy a t ring for the camera and you would have the same thing. Unless you have extraordinary League good Optics, nothing magnifying that much is going to look good during the day unless it's relatively cold outside because you're also magnifying the effects of the heat in the atmosphere.

    what if you used a mono-pod on camera to add stability in combination with lens attached to tripod?

    you could purchase a telescope and buy the piece to add the camera onto it, i have taken some pretty good photos of moon doing that.

    wait, people actually think this lens should be sharp with that zoom and price? do you people know how much it would cost if you want to have big brand quality at 1000mm? With the price and images that you get from this lens, it's actually good. If you want like a canon 1000mm, then consider selling your organs LMAO

    You should be able to get better shots than that of the statue. Maybe a dodgy one. I own the lens but in white version, of courses it's not good on a windy day, with practice you can get some great images.

    I feel like this lens needs 2 tripods(on front and back of lens) for stability.
    ........This is not a great lens for a photographer wanting the clearest photo. That might be easier with a 40-61mp camera and 400mm or 600mm lens, might actually get better results. Since the image can be cropped to simulat a zoom.
    ............ This lens might be good for a journalist simply trying to document a seen or event from a distance.
    ........ Perhaps a photographer can clean up the image in post if the lens was still, using a remote to take that photo.

    Great review! I have some questions ,for anyone who can answer them: I don't have a Canon and I have been told there is no adapter for a Vivitar 400 SL, if that is true would I be unable to use this lens? Inspite of the mixed review and results, if there is an adapter somewhere in the big wide world, does anyone know where I could get one? Finally, I hear this is for mirror less cameras ,and my camera definitely has a mirror in it, does that make it unusable for my camera? I have a chance to buy one on eBay at a discount, but they have not answered the questions I have asked and they are placing a time limit on the offer, so an ASAP response would be appreciated. Thank you!

      Wait, you trying to shoot on iPhone 13? It has built in telephoto camera, I don’t think you’ll be able to switch lenses on iPhone
