    Bought one few years ago. Use it for large bird nests and it works just fine. Get a good tripod though, with a middle pole weight hook. So the money you save buying this lens, could get you a decent tripod..I've covered some lens with a plastic sandwich bag & a rubberband..Looking forward to using this lens this coming spring!

    Excellent review with very useful real-world demonstrations. Thank you for going for it and getting the lens and then going to the effort to tell people about this product.
    I notice that most of the shots/video seem to have a haze about them, and on that basis I won't buy the lens (my camera also doesn't have focus peaking) but it is good to be able to see how it performs and what it feels like nonetheless.

      It's hard for to find dust in sensor. But now, it was my favorite to clean the dust in sensor lol. Just mirror look up if you want to cleanse your sensor on Nikon.

    • @Harlem55
      @Harlem55 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's no reason you should be getting dust in the sensor- about the only way that's going to happen is if the camera body is left without a lens and without a cap. past about 300 mm, lenses will increasingly "pick up" what's floating in the atmosphere, just due to the magnification properties of the lens. On a 3,000 mm lens you will invariably get dust particles in the shot no matter how good the camera or the lens is. You deal with it in post.

    • @greysuit17
      @greysuit17 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Harlem55 nah it’s super easy to get dust on a mirrorless on the sensor. If you change lenses frequently you’ll get dust. If you leave your camera on and change lenses you’ll get lots of dust. If you never use an air blower on your lenses or sensor you’ll have dust. If you never put caps on the back of your lenses like the guy in this video you’ll get dust. It happens, you just have to be diligent and have good practices in caring for your gear and you can minimize it.

    • @Harlem55

    That plane had to be very far away because I can take photos of planes at altitude with a 300mm plus a 2x converter for 600mm, and see the plane fairly well but not close enough to see the logo of the airline. I still get decent shots of them with their contrails but could get closer shots with a larger lens to have better closer pictures.

Ive been doing photography for over 50 years so a manual lens isn't much of a stretch because most of this time except for from 08 till now i used manual lenses. If it has a weekness its the set ring for the zoom. It doesn't hold well. Thanks for tge video.

    I got one too. It doubles as a telescope to take pictures across the fjord 2 km away. Optically its crap, but it makes quite a good telescope and you can take photos with it. It's solidly built too. You are not going to win any photography prizes with it, but you will get photographs of the crew on the deck of a nuclear submarine 2 km away.
    It's very good value for money, just be realistic in your expectations. . . . . . .

      @mattc3295 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@peter9111 It's not because your camera is bad, not at all! This has nothing to do with camera bodies.
      The lense is just crap to be fair. True, it may only be a 100$, and the 420-800mm focal length (670 to almost 1300mm on an APS-C body like yours) may be appealing if you want to get in photography where you require such ultra telephoto lenses, but the quality will be very low.
      This lense goes from f/8 to f/16. That means not much light hitting the sensor and a very dark viewfinder.
      Also remember that at such zoom, with no Image stabilization, you will need fast shutter speeds to get no shake in your images, which, considering this lense being f/8-16 may be quite difficult unless you push your ISO quite high and it's very bright outside. Manual focusing may be difficult as well, unless you have a tripod even the smallest touch at such focal length will give camera shake.
      This lense will give you lots of chromatic aberration, probably not that sharp either.
      At the end of the day it can be a 100$ dollar toy, no wonder a Canon lense with similar focal lengths would set you back thousands and thousands of dollars :)

      I think it really depends on what you want to use it for. You are not going to get pro quality photos with this but you will get a zoom level that you can't get with other lenses near this price range. I think of this kind of like binoculars that you can record. If you use binoculars a lot then this might be perfect for you.

    Why? It doesn't take "pro" photos, so why carry around that hideous lens? I just use a Canon bridge camera with a built-in 50x (1200mm) optical zoom. Most likely takes better and closer pics than that contraption.

    Soft, chromatic aberations, missalignment, all of it is there. But... it's 100 $... so I would say, this is a good deal.

  • @moxican7

    I think that lens is horrible. The "value" of any lens is the image you can take with it not the price you purchased it for. That lens has chromatic aberrations all over it. The Moon picture (and video) shows it the best but it is clearly visible on the bird picture as well.
    Having said that, great review, I like how you choose targets of different light conditions to show its performance. Much appreciated.

      I think you are unrealistic. Nobody said they compare to some lens from famous brands like Canon, Sigma, Nikon, Sony, but to get this zoom range you would have to pay thousands of dollars. If it had autofocus(and probably costed like 50$more) you get something usable and decent for 150$. You'd have to be absurd to expect it to have the quality of some lenses that cost thousands of dollars.

      @@Ema-fm5zy You can get a Celestron C90 (1250mm, 1875mm CF on this camera) for about $200 that is many times better than this POS. Why would you spend $600 on a camera to only put $100 of crappy lens in front of it?

    Dat chromatic aberration :/ So better to buy a teleconverter for a telephoto lens...

    • @Harlem55
      @Harlem55 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even with a teleconverter- you're still going to see chromatic aberration- it's an inherent issue with telephoto lenses- and rather just a question of degree, as some do it more than others.
