  • I reviewed this lens in the past, and I've had people ask questions about getting it set up and working on their camera. I decided to make this video giving some basic instruction for use of this lens.
    The basics of this video also apply to other brands and versions of this same lens, as well as other cheap, manual telephoto lenses.

    You need to make a correction of a HUGE error. The first settings are NOT a zoom function. The settings with the lines are for focus and not zoom. The numbers next to the knurled ring is the focal distance/focus indicator and the numbers on the other end of the lines are the aperture setting. There is no zoom on a prime lens!!!

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Holy cow, I never caught that after all this time. I accidentally called it a zoom the first two times. This was just a misspeak, as I know full well this is a prime lens with no zoom function, and I properly call it focus a moment later. But this is a glaring issue. Good catch. I'll see about getting that corrected. Thanks.

      I have this comment pinned for now, so hopefully anyone who is confused will see this comment. I could create an update video with a correction of this and one other, less critical, but meaningful point another commenter made and place a card linking to it in the video at the point of the mistake, though that wouldn't really jump out to most viewers. I think the only other option would be to remove, correct and re-upload the video. I actually just got the lens back (I had loaned it to a cousin's young son who is really into photography and he just returned it a few days ago) so I could take some more sample shots and make a new, updated video with the lens and simply remove this one and upload the corrected video.
      Anyone have any thoughts as to which route I should take?

    I did buy one and I have to say, the learning curve is high. it takes a bit to get used to. I also found, with a Nikon D3400, that just turning the nob on top to M--manual focus--is not enough. You have to go into the camera settings and adjust the setting from Auto-Focus (AF) to Manual-Focus (MF). Then when you are done with he lens you have to back into settings and return to Auto-Focus; you may also have to reset your settings in order to resume use of the standard Nikon lens. Because the lens is long and heavy, a tripod is almost a must, though a photographer can learn how to hold the lens steady. Once you get the hang of it, the photographs aren't bad.

    Good explanation of the process and certainly helpful for people with no experience with manual lenses. However, the aperture setting process needs more explanation. This is a "pre-set" lens which means you set the working aperture (the one you want to shoot the pic with) and then open up (with the ring closer to the camera) and focus. Then close down with said ring and take the pic. The reason is as follows. Let's say you want to take a pic which needs f 22 (bright lights, moon, whatever). Now it is pretty hard if not impossible to focus the lens at f22 through the viewfinder. So you open up with the ring to the maximum stop (f8 in this case) and focus and then close down to the PRE-SET aperture without taking the eye from the viewfinder and take the pic. A lens without pre-set requires you to open up, focus and then look at the aperture ring to set the working aperture. Your subject might have moved or scampered alltogether during that moment. Good luck finding it again with 500mm :) As to handheld shooting. It is possible to get (relatively) sharp pics by employing the reciprocal rule. In the film days where there was no image stabilisation we had to use it (with any given focal lenght)to get sharp pics. It's simple: the shutter speed has to be equal to or exceed the focal lenght of the lens used. For a 500mm lens that means at least 1/500ths of a second. And don't forget to figure in the 'crop' factor of your camera, 1.5x in the case of Nikon so a minimum of 1/750ths of a second. Make it 1/1000ths to be sure. Luckily we have enough ISO to play with in modern cameras. I normally don't comment on youtube postings.But I think the work you put into your post deserved a reply.

      The aperture is not preset. The maximum aperture is set, allegedly, at 8.0 but there would be no aperture ring if that were so. I have on of these budget 500mm lenses and the same goes: 8.0 but I can still change the aperture regardless of what the specs say.

    In regards to the MF/AF button on the camera, many Sony cameras have a button on both the camera and the lens. If you need MF, turn off the lens button instead of the camera. Also, most Sony can shoot manual focus even if the camera button is set to AF.

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on the specific lens and camera, many Nikon and Canon cameras will allow you to focus manually as well, even if the camera and/or lens is in auto-focus (including some lenses on my Nikon). With this lens, my Nikon will not allow a photo to be taken unless the switch on the body is in the manual focus position.

    Bros I have one big issue, yesterday I was shooting and was using the 500mm, later I tried the 2x converter to make it 1000mm but was to hard to control, so I took it off and saved it, put the 500mm mode again and some minutes later finished the work.
    The issue started today, when I tried to use the 500mm again didn't fit my camera, I have the adapter for my Canon camera like yesterday but the lens didn't fit it, but when I use the 2x to make it 1000mm it works, so I don't know what happened
    Someone has an idea on that could've happend to my lens or if I lost something?
    I did check the lens manual and looks that I have all the pieces...

      @oldpathsbaptistministries7904 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is an old post, so I don't know if you have figured it out, but if not, the problem is likely that these lenses often come in a screw mount and have an adapter that makes it fit your camera brand. Look to see if the lens adapter stayed connected to the 2x converter. If so, the threads are incompatible with your camera. This is why when you reattach the 2x converter, which has the lens adapter on it, it works. Just my guess. I have had 2 of these lenses ; one was a screw mount with an adapter, and the other came with the proper mount built into the lens.

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the camera allows you to take a picture, but the picture turns out all black, I would start by checking all your exposure settings. Check the aperture of the lens and make sure it is set on f8. Then try increasing the exposure settings of the camera to see if you can get the image to brighten up. Try slowing the shutter speed first. Can you see anything through the viewfinder with the lens attached? If so, and the shutter actuates when you push the shutter button, then it's likely just an exposure setting in the camera that needs to be adjusted.

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't say for sure, but I think it would work if you could get the correct T-ring. That camera has an FD mount, so you would have to get a T mount for Canon FD. I'm sure they exist, but they may be difficult to come by since that mount is far less popular than the newer Canon mount. Also, on a film camera I fear you will have a lot of blurry shots due to the difficulty of focusing with this lens.
      Having said that, I haven't shot with film very much and it was probably twenty years ago. So I cannot say for sure how easy it would or would not be to get good shots with this lens.

      Probably not. With no autofocus and difficult to hit manual focus, it will be extremely difficult to get sharp shots with this lens on moving subjects. Not to mention the F8 aperture making fast shutter speeds less practical (for freezing sports action). This lens is going to be best on a tripod pointing at stationary, or mostly stationary subjects. This lens has a fairly long minimum focus distance of 20 or 30 feet, so anything closer than that may not be able to get to clear focus.

      You have to put the mode dial in manual mode (M) for it to work. It will still show F- at that point becuase the lens has no electronics to tell the camera what the aperture is. It will also be manual focus only, so it will be blurry until you manually focus on something. I hope that helps.

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have any experience with that lens, but my guess is that you must set the aperture on the lens itself, not through the camera. Maybe something similar to the lens in my video.
      In that case, just like with the Bower lens in the video, the camera won't know, and so it won't display the aperture. Since it doesn't have control, it won't know what you have it set for, but it should still work.

      Are you looking for a t-ring for your camera so you can mount this type of lens? Many of these lenses will come with a t-ring for a specific camera, but if you need a t-ring you can get them many places. Amazon and ebay as well as many camera supply and telescope supply shops online will sell t-rings.

      @bigtb1717  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@qbitsday3438 First you need a camera with interchangable lenses (such as a DSLR or Mirrorless camera system). Once you have the camera you just have to get a t-ring for the camera mount you have. So, for example, if you got a Nikon DSLR you would just have to get a t-ring for Nikon F mount. What t-ring you get will depend on what camera brand and model you get.

      bigtb1717 thank you .which means I don’t have to worry about the telephoto side .i assume the thread to fix the ring on the telephoto side is standard .weather I have a nikon dslr or cannon .Is my understanding correct?

    • @bigtb1717

      That's correct. The actual threading on the t-ring is standard. The only difference is the type of camera mount it is designed to fit.
