Today I’ll show you a little known or used exercise that will stop the pulled chest so you can begin the process of building your mixed voice. This is a proven exercise that works for students who need extra help getting mixed voice and it will work for you.
Sir I've watched this video and I practiced the "Ng" exercise for one week and then I tried to sing a song in mix but it feels like pulled up chest voice and now only I'm realising that I did the exercise wrong way I can do the exercise with nose closed.. plz help me sir
Sir I could enter the bridge between chest and mix voice... The mix to head bridge is been very hard ... The worst scenario is that I can't be able to know whether I'm in mix or pulling chest... Thank you sir I'll watch the video
I'm both flabbergasted and infuriated. I've been a professional singer for over 20 years. I've taken hundreds of voice lessons, dating all the way back to high school. I've never heard of mixed voice in my life. My break has always been just the worst, and it's stopped me from using my head voice my whole career. I can't believe I'm just now hearing of "mixed-voice." How was this never taught to me?! Thanks for this video series. My mind is blown.
Teachers who don't know about this, aren't trying to withhold information. They don't know that they don't know. My own teacher, who received his bachelors and masters in vocal performance could not find any teacher in his studies to help him and he was angry. Finally at age 27 he found someone who knew about this and helped him. He has devoted his entire life to develop a technique that everyone can learn. I was 43 before I found it. It is life changing for me personally.
I studied with at least 4 vocal coaches including Ron Anderson. I bought CDs that cost hundreds of dollars. I've tried lessons from many TH-cam vocal coaches. Your videos have been by far the most helpful.
I am a rock singer and I used to gig constantly before the Covid lockdown. Now I swear, since I hadn't done a gig for 4 months, last week I went to do one and I basically couldn't sing with my chest voice anymore, it's like I had forgotten how to sing lol! All the full chest voice stuff was fine, but the higher mixed stuff I just didn't have it anymore, now I'm back on the right track lol thanks a lot!
Here in the Philippines, "ng" is present in most sentences we used everyday with our native language and also in our songs like "Ngayon" "Ang" "Saang" "Aling" "Merong" "Ngalan" "Mga"-pronounced as ma-nga and many more. I am not bragging and I do not know if this is the reason but me and most of my friends and family could sing really well. I do not know if it is because of us loving karaoke but I really think pronouncing and singing with "ng" sound really helps.
Thanks to this ng technique I finally transitioned between head and chest voice without breaking . It was very soft and needs much more practice but now there is something to practice thank you so much❤️
Also, since you achieve it with such ease it saddens me that when I try the female range that I struggle as much as I do. Maybe it's just practice though.
Wow! you made my voice sound 10 times better and saved my voice from further abuse. Thank you so much for this video. my voice sounds so much richer, I can even apply it to talking. You're awesome! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. :D
Hi Chuck! I've been singing my entire life but a few months ago I found out about the existence of "mixed voice" and I suddenly understood exactly what my voice was missing and how that was holding me back from being a better singer. For months now I've been reading articles, watching videos and doing exercises but to no avail. I just found your videos and was pleased to find out that you actually didn't know how to do mixed voice and were able to teach yourself! That gives me hope!!! So I've been watching a bunch of your videos and I'm trying to do these exercises but my stupid flip-falsetto voice keeps having to choose whether to do them in chest voice or falsetto... which am I supposed to be doing them in? Should I "flip" between them? I just can't see myself ever bridging the gap :( Please help!
Hi Rebecca: I didn't learn on my own. I had a bunch of teachers to help me. Here's a good starting place to start working on your voice. Watch this video and follow the directions. th-cam.com/video/d0Ob8WGmvPc/w-d-xo.html Good luck Rebecca and keep me posted!
This was so helpful thank you! I used to be very good at finding and keeping my mixed going, but after my voice changed and I stoped singing as often I lost it. these were so great!
@@PowerToSing It is one used by Franco Tenelli and is from the Caruso exercises, per him. I can check it again (I have done them a thousand times!) but I am pretty certain that is the same. Some crazy Gestalt, huh?
I have a Danzig/Elvis belting style and this has been an issue with me- the limiting “pulling” sensation where I know there’s a ceiling on how high I can go before going into airy (and thus less aggressive) head voice. I will dutifully do these exercises, thank you!
Just be careful not to break into a disconnected falsetto, as this will not enable you to sing with a mix of chest and head voice...there will be no chest voice to mix.
It is applicable to any song that goes into or through the first bridge of the voice when you begin to use a mix of chest and head voice. The first bridge for men begins on the E4, F, F#4. For ladies it is A4, Bb, B4, C#5.
When I first started out, adding an "h" in front of some of the exercises allowed more air to pass though my cords and helped balance my voice somewhat. It definitely helped me because I was gripping too tight with my vocal cords. Maybe that's what's helping you too.
I need to check out that pdf for sure…been working on my mixed voice for about 20 years but still find myself pulling chest on certain songs/ranges. When I manage to avoid it I can sing for hours without fatigue!
Personally I've found private lessons very helpful because my teachers were able to listen and tell me when I'm pulling and give me a way to fix it. It's a very effective way of improving for me at least.
@@PowerToSing that definitely makes a lot of sense! I think there are many things that I discovered through trial and error that could have been developed much quicker with a good teacher.

Thanks a million for this. I thought my voice was damaged and as a person who lives below the poverty line and also in a place where singing is not thought, I just was hoping for a miracle. Not only did the test helped me realize I was pull-chest and high larynx voice type. For the first time it is showing me the exact location of my larynx . My major challenge is the stop pulling
You are not alone. The majority of singers tend to pull the chest voice and raise the larynx. But this technique will teach you how to change all that...and life is never the same afterward!
Hi ! Really really really by far the best advise on mix voice on TH-cam ! I'm a rock singer since my twenties but I discovered the NG exercise only about 5 years ago. That exercise extended my almost tenor range to F5 ! But, but, but... I lost a lot of my head voice (falsetto) range doing so (over F5). It feels like I've built up muscle for mix voice, and now my voice don't want to break. Do I have to learn to "mix" my mix voice with my falsetto ? Do you have advice to help me get back that falsetto range that I could play with up to F6 ?
This is great information and instantly helped me. I have been involved with another program for about 7 months now. Where I have worked on stretching the chest voice and have been having good results. but still missing that sound I get when I do your instructions on mixed voice. But my question is: If we have more chest range, isnt it better for mix overall? Or do we need to worry about it. In your experience. Another good youtube coach seems to do similar to your teaching. And your instructions have helped me. So I am probably answering my own question? Thanks for you time!
Hi D.S. More chest voice, which is pulled up higher, is not going to help build a better mix. It only builds a better pulled up chest. Depending on the voice, that might work for a few years. But eventually the voice stops working very well, vibrato slows and students can't figure out what they are doing wrong. Chest voice for a guy tenor or baritone begins at the E4 just above middle C. E4, F, F#4 is the all important first bridge. Get it right and you get almost everything else right!
Oh geez, thank you for the info. I didn't like the sound of the mix voice( before knowing it) that's why I'm pulling my chest, thinking it sound more release and no tension like screaming. When I tried the exercise, I kinda strain doing it than my pulling chest.
Power To Sing my singing teacher tried to teach me mixed voice and I just couldn’t get it. I don’t really know what kind of sound I’m trying to achieve so I don’t know when I’m doing it right or wrong 😂
@@jesspostings I don't teach students to go for a certain sound. You must go for a certain anatomical condition. The vocal cords need to be appropriately adducted (brought together) and the larynx needs to remain at the level where you speak. When these things are right, the "right" tone or sound will result.

Wow, it's amazing to see you replying to comments years after the video is posted. So I have a question. I have a hard time getting a smooth and gradual transition from the chest to the head voice. When I do the first exercise, I can feel and hear a definite shift in tone as I approach the bridge. I just can't seem to grasp the feel of that smooth transition through the passaggio. If I try to maintain the more chesty feel for the higher notes, I only get the pulled chest. So basically, I want to ask if I'm doing it wrong if I feel like my voice is shifting rather than maintaining a smooth connection throughout. It's hard to explain, but it sounds like NG~NG~NG~HNG~HNG~HNG~HNG~NG~NG. Thanks you!
Hi WW: At first we almost all feel the transition areas. Also, what you are describing can be diminished by cutting the loudness or intensity by 50%, especially in the chest voice. Try and reduce how loud and hard you are starting the exercise. See if this makes a difference.
@@PowerToSing Thank you so much for the reassurance. I was worried I had the technique all wrong. I definitely noticed a smoother transition when singing softer!
Yes and no. Yes for warm ups etc. But training the voice to function in the bridges is different. A true Basso bridges at the A3 and the true contralto bridges at the E4. But they are rare.
The ng helped with my belt I just need to find a way to transition to, chest to head voice it’s not that hard doing the ng I can feel the mixed voice rising when doing it
Thanks so much these sound really helpful! For the second one I found myself having to flip to do the repeat notes - should I let that happen or try to stay connected?
loved all the exercises, i did both for men and women, my question, why have different scales for the sexes? is it just that women tend to sing higher? I'm trying to work on my lower register so I'm doing of lot of male exercises at the mo, but it defiantly feels like im breaking the rules a bit!!!
Men and Women's voices are different. They transition from chest to head voice in different places in their voices. Generally, Men and sing much lower than women and women much higher that men. The vocal cord structure is different between the sexes.
Often the nasal sound is caused by a high larynx. So any exercise that helps bring the Larynx down, or help it stay down will help. You may want to check out these: www.powertosing.com/pulled-chest-high-larynx-2/

When you’re a male and have to do the male scale an octave lower. 😢
I don’t even know how to sing super high but I can do the ladies scale
I struggle to get with female scales on good days. I always take this sort of thing with a grain of salt, being a contralto.
@@Eniral441 oh ok, then I hope you have the blessing of being able to sing in the 2nd octave.
these are great!!
Omg that works so well thanks so much
Thanks so much these sound really helpful! For the second one I found myself having to flip to do the repeat notes - should I let that happen or try to stay connected?
Stay connected!
Thank You so much my voice is much more better 😅
Welcome 😊

Doing ng is mixed? Thank you so much.
Doing ng is a way to stop pulling chest voice. It's a beginning. It might lead to singing with a mix voice.
loved all the exercises, i did both for men and women, my question, why have different scales for the sexes? is it just that women tend to sing higher? I'm trying to work on my lower register so I'm doing of lot of male exercises at the mo, but it defiantly feels like im breaking the rules a bit!!!
Men and Women's voices are different. They transition from chest to head voice in different places in their voices. Generally, Men and sing much lower than women and women much higher that men. The vocal cord structure is different between the sexes.
thank for this video
Most welcome.
So helpful
I enjoy them all!
Awesome!
Just new here I hope the Ming exercise will help me get my mixed voice though I don't really know how long it will take me
It will definitely help you to not pull chest voice.
@@ChuckGilmore sir I usually feel like I lost my voice after the Ming exercise
Sir I really to know how my body system will feel to ensure that I'm actually on the right track

@@prinxfortunate9936 Hummm. Never experienced personally or with a student. Probably you should stop doing them.
Its very helps me
Great!
thank you so much
You're welcome!
Hi, thanks for the lesson! I have a question, how can you make your mix voice less nasally and more powerful and sharp?
Often the nasal sound is caused by a high larynx. So any exercise that helps bring the Larynx down, or help it stay down will help. You may want to check out these: www.powertosing.com/pulled-chest-high-larynx-2/
@@PowerToSing thank you!
So basically, I can use the NG sound to all scales since it stops pulling chest. Great video! I would like to unlock my mixed voice in the future :))
