    Again, great education. In all the years of raising chickens, this is the first time I have heard such an easy and detailed explanation on breeding groups. So glade I found your channel. No fluff. Looking forward to so much more.

      People keep talking about sustainable flocks but forget that they need to be the breeder of that flock and can make the chickens better or worse. Thanks for watching and supporting it means a lot.

      @@The.Recreational.Homestead Thank you for the reply. I keep watching to learn. I recognize many of your structures from the same channels I have been watching for years. Thank you again for the FREE education.

    I love the log style piece in the middle where you have to go snag the dog leash! Wow! Studying up on the American Bresse as I drive home with our first bunch of chicks from Texas!!! Excellent quality of information you were giving out! We are also going to be raising mottled Java heritage breed and I just got 100 kosher king chicks from the freedom ranger hatchery that we are going to be comparing. I am calling 2023 the year of the chicken at our farm lol

    Can’t wait to see how you set up your spiral breeding system. I am in the process of doing the same. Got a new sub!

    I've spent the whole day looking online for a good bresse breeder. I've seen a lot of negative comments about the breed being dumb or having bad temperament. About bad breeders. Ect
    At this point I'm skeptical of who to trust to buy from. (I have 17 chickens and have kept chickens for 12 years btw so I understand having a bad roo here and there)

      There are a lot of breeders just try to make a quick $. The breed is definitely a breed that doesn’t like to be cooped up in my opinion. I had a lot of people that were asking me where to get Bresse chicks and I didn’t have a hatchery I felt good about recommending so I decided to start selling chicks myself. So far I haven’t had any complaints.

      @@The.Recreational.Homestead mine will be free range. They dont mind going inside a regular coop at night do they? We free range with no fence. The chickens I have now sleep directly next to one another even tho there is more space inside the coop..

    • @The.Recreational.Homestead
      @The.Recreational.Homestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No they are perfectly fine sleeping in a coop, I have just found that they hate to be in a static coop even on deep bedding. They just seam to get board, I don’t like keeping chickens in a static coop any ways but here in Michigan it’s nice for the winter some times.

    This is interesting! Do you move the rooster to the hens or the other way?

    • @The.Recreational.Homestead
      @The.Recreational.Homestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would move the rooster, but most of the time you would take the best of the roosters you hatched from that group and put them in with the hens of the next group. The faster you replace the roosters with there better offspring the fast you improve your stock.

    If you find a breeder who is passionate about culling and have the right traits. You will mess up all their work if you buy for more than one - thats what i was told.

    Remember if you decide to breed your own chicken's you have to bring in new blood

    • @The.Recreational.Homestead
      @The.Recreational.Homestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you use a good breeding program like the spiral matting system with at least 3 breeding groups but 5 is best you can have a closed flock with enough diversity.

    • @LouisePrice-n4t
      @LouisePrice-n4t ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I heard that you can do it without new blood if you start with a flock from a serious breeder who doesn't send siblings
