    Hi there, I cannot seem to find any more of your videos on breeding techniques for chickens. This is the only video I have found. We are now in 2020. Will you be doing anymore videos on this subject??

      OK that saves me some time looking. Thank you. Did you end up breeding chickens? I decided to breed this year and I exploded with tons of foundation stock and four different breeds. But now our money is more than tight because I had trouble with my step kids. I’m going to try to sell eggs for extra money.

    I can't house 100 at this time, but I am working with a breeder of Partridge Chanteclers, and that gives us both many more birds to consider.

    Is breeding back to fathers or brothers to be avoided like other animals? Excellent 101, thanks!

    Can one put a mark on the eggs that you put in the incubator to know what male they are from. Will marker harm the egg?

    • @sustainablepoultrynetwork-1868
      @sustainablepoultrynetwork-1868  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great idea, yes, its best practice to mark the eggs to follow the pedigree. A pencil is best but some do have success with a non-toxic marker. The smaller the markings the better.

    Thank you. Interesting video. I was researching the Sustainable poultry network and I dont see where training has been offered since 2018. Is this something you still do? I own a small 20 acre farm in NE Florida and want to move from commercial hatchery raised chickens (we have about 150 hens only we use for eggs) to APA show quality birds over the next several years. We also have a TH-cam channel of our farm - please consider subscribing. Thanks again.

    If I purchase my baby chicks from a large hatchery, is it then ok to breed these birds? The reason for this question is within entertaining the philosophy of line breeding, inline breeding, and out crossing . . . What should be my immediate concern when purchasing from a single large hatchery?
    Hoping here that I made myself clearly understood . . . . It's just that I haven't heard anyone address this topic, nor do I know if this should even be a concern??? Any help here is GREATLY Appreciated, Sincerely.

      I think it would be impossible if the chick is a hybrid. (That is if the parents are from different breeds). This would lead to unfavorable segregation of genes. However, this could work fine (in my opinion) if the breeds are 1. Exotic and 2. If the breed have lived for many years, say 100s of years. This would be because after 100 of years you should've had a "pure-line" of genes.

      They need more time. Select males at 20 to 24 weeks…

    How does one start breeding heritage chickens of good quality when the only place I know to get that May chicks is from a large hatchery?

    • @chrishardenbrook2687
      @chrishardenbrook2687 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Go to www.spnusa.com, the website of the Sustainable Poultry Network. Under the POULTRY tab, click on CERTIFIED FLOCKS. There is a list of SPN-Certified breeders for a number of different types of heritage chickens you may contact. Or, email Jim Adkins directly from the site; he is very accessible and can discuss your best options.

    If your thinking of hatcherys then you dont need to raise them. There is a lot of good breeders out there join the clubs of the breeds your looking for.
