Lion gatecrashes Topi pride hippo feast

The wilderness always presents us with unique perspectives of particularly novel animal behaviour. On one overcast evening, we stumbled upon a striking scene: a hippo carcass resting in a pool of water, being devoured by a group of lions. Perhaps the unfortunate demise of the hippo was due to illness or the aftermath of a territorial dispute. As we approached for a closer look, what we discovered was truly extraordinary.
Among the lionesses of the Topi Pride, feasting alongside them was an unexpected guest: Lemoniko, one of the 3 Sankai males from a rival pride. Despite initial tensions marked by snarls and minor displays of aggression, there was a surprising tolerance towards Lemoniko's presence. They shared the meal, albeit with some discomfort evident.
In a typical scenario, such an encounter might spiral into violence, especially if the Topi Pride males had stumbled upon this intruder. However, the lionesses seemed to perceive Lemoniko differently, perhaps not viewing him as a significant threat. Alternatively, the absence of cubs within the pride could have contributed to their leniency, allowing room for the rival male to partake in the feast. Whatever the reasoning, this rare encounter provided a glimpse into the complex dynamics of lion society, and we are grateful to have documented it.
