I love the i8 for what it is: A potential future concept of sheer driving pleasure. It's not a BMW M, it's a BMW i. So I get it why it's more of a GT. I think you're right, the looks are still so futuristic, probably never gets old. But to be fair, you don't buy this car for the performance, you buy it to show it. The design and the drama is why you buy an i8. To get performance, just take a M240i for less than half the price. So much understatement and still so much performance, that'd be my choice.

If you put a go pro in the trunk, where there is no speaker, and take just the leather cover off the engine, it sounds the same as what you hear in the cabin. The sound augmentation truly does replicate what you'd hear without all the sound deadening.

I've been in a few, driven them, have heard engine running at idle and when driving and truth be told, it does sound very nice in town in sports mode. Did you hear the latest Porsche's with a 4-cylinder? Imho, as long as it's not directly compared to an 6-cylinder, that too sounds great!
But the Tesla will have cheaper materials inside. What Tesla does good in power and max. range they do bad in quality of materials. Tesla is pretty much only interested in acceleration and range and still doesn't give much about materials, clearance between body work parts and so on.

Ford, Nissan, VW and so on can't throw away billions for tech which might be big 20 years in the future (elektro mobility is still small nowadays). It doesn't really mean that the big car manufacturers couldn't have done it if they would have invested the same 10 years ago. They just couldn't to not get fucked from investors. If you are the only company doing something (like Tesla the last years) you will always find a market but that doesn't mean that everyone could sell 300k+ elektro cars now if every manufacturer would sell them with the same technology, same range and so on. Yes, others are still behind Tesla if it comes to range but yeah, it's not their fault that their investors don't want big investments for something in 10-20 years. Tesla has the same problem in some years when they will sell some million cars and will be profitable on a yearly basis. Then they can't invest anymore in future tech to kill all their profits. Then their investors (which will be different to them now) will complain. But Tesla still needs to get their shit done if it comes to quality of materials. Not everyone wants to buy a Tesla just for "elektro" and doesn't care about the rest. That's for the first 1 millions customers who want a elektro car with decent range so bad. But we have 100 million cars sold each year on this planet and there are millions who don't only look at elektro or not.
But that will ruin the idea/concept ! This car is different for a reason and not trying to compete with any traditional car or Porsche 918, LaFarrari etc ...

You guys are doing these full reviews as well as top speed tests even night drives it really does gives a perspective. Buyer great overview of the vehicle and not have to listen to a salesman.

Its cheap because, strangely, the i8 is not so popular now in North America. I'd love the roadster. But I need seats for kids and smaller, older folk. Still. They'll get a great ride in this. If only they had developed their electric drivetrains and made this fully electric - Imagine Plaid speed with these looks, a lower COG and better tech - or go the other way - lose the rear seats and boot and put a twin turbo V8 with a more powerful electric drivetrain - would be a monster.
This doesn't intend to be a supercar guys. This intends to be a "gran turismo", something sporty you can curve about beautiful serpentines in the mountains on a sunny sunday afternoon :)
