- 1984 is remembered for mostly one thing: John McEnroe’s magical 82-3 match record, which stands the test of time as the highest winning percentage for a season in tennis history, which saw McEnroe feature his traditionally jaw-dropping serve and volley game, the game that had toppled Bjorn Borg from his perch atop the tennis mountain.
Graphite racquets had also helped Mac improve his serve and groundstrokes, and the end result was a whirling tornado of shotmaking from all areas of the court that was virtually unbeatable. However, he did still lose thrice that year. Once was to Vijay Amritraj in Cincinnati. Another was to Henrik Sundstrom in Davis Cup. And that leaves just one loss, one of far greater magnitude - the French Open final to Ivan Lendl.
While one may look back and think that an eventual three time Roland Garros champion in Lendl beating a single time runner up in McEnroe would be no surprise, this match was a stunner. Yes, Lendl had previously beaten McEnroe in Paris quite comfortably in 1981, the year McEnroe won two majors and forced Bjorn Borg into early retirement. However, 1984 was different.
Armed with his now-potent baseline game and laser-sharp intensity, McEnroe had not lost on clay, or at all, thus far that year. In fact, he’d lost just two sets in fifteen prior matches on clay. This included a 6-4 6-2 beating of Lendl in the finals of the prestigious Forest Hills tournament on Har-Tru as well as relatively comprehensive dismissals of quality clay courter Jose Higueras and fellow legend Jimmy Connors leading up to his finals date with Lendl. Add to this that Lendl had still not tasted grand slam glory and seemed to shrink from the occasion in every one of his previous four grand slam finals, and McEnroe had to be a firm favorite heading into this clash. I saw this whenI I was a teenager….it was the greatest tennis match I had ever seen…I had recorded this telecast and re-watched it for days…it was a match of perseverance leading to a reward….just amazing….

Same. It was the greatest match I had ever seen up until the Big 3 rivalries. I was 11 at the time, loved them both, but wanted Lendl to win. This is one of the greatest rivalries ever in tennis.
Probably one of the best matches ever. Some people say this was the beginning of the decline for McEnroe.

2:15:57 is the point at which McEnroe says (in his autobiography) that he lost the match.
He was 40-30 up, and had he been firmer on that forehand volley, he likely would have won that point, gone up 5-3, and been just one game away from the match.
Instead, it ended up being that Lendl won 6 out of 7 games from 2-4 down in the fourth set, sending the match into the fifth and wearing McEnroe down physically.
The point is a good illustration of the fact that McEnroe got tired the longer the match went on. In the first two sets he would have been quicker and hit the volley earlier.
I actually think that he lost the match in the third set. He started to toy with Lendl, and also fought against some photographers.
Both of which was pretty unnecesary, and cost him energy that he would have better spent on his shots.
Mac conceded a point to Lendl early. Ppl overlook how much John loved the game and even though he didnt like Lendl's cold and staid facade. Both were amazing champions and i loved how they brought the best out of one another.

Enberg made a small mistake at 1:23:43 when he said the last 5-set final was between Borg and Lendl in '80. It was actually '81.
The turning point? Possibly at 2-2 in the third set with Lendl serving at 30-40, having saved two break points. From behind the baseline, McEnroe hits a good approach shot deep to Lendl's forehand, but instead of charging forward behind hit, McEnroe hesitates slightly before moving forward. As a result, when Lendl returns the shot, weakly, McEnroe takes it on one bounce, rather than with a volley. McEnroe's resulting shot is not as threatening as a volley would have been, and Lendl gets to it with a well-known forehand crosscourt passing shot, which leaves McEnroe sprawled in the dust. To be fair, McEnroe played that point well, and the margin on Lendl's winner was narrow. I was pulling for McEnroe, but in spite of the result, it was a very entertaining match. Oh, and good quality upload--moves along so nicely without the commercial breaks.

The turning point of the match? 1 h.22 min... in the 3rd set on the two deuce service Lendl, Mcenroe has 3 break points, but plays those 3 points badly; in the first he accepts the exchange from the baseline and hits a forehand; in the second he sinks a backhand into the net; in the third, after not having closed the net, he is passed by his opponent with a cross-court forehand; if he had converted one of those balls, leading by two sets to zero, he would have gone ahead 3 to 2 and serve in the third, with a now discouraged Lendl; instead the Czechoslovakian recovers and manages to keep the serve; from that moment on he will begin to believe in himself, to play with more determination and to make his opponent sweat every point
Mcenroe played 2 plus sets of the finest tennis ever played, problem was Lendl hung in there and simply refused (for the 1st time after losing 5 grand slam finals) to capitulate, it was there if we want to be honest, although McEnroe dominated 84, he was really not the same after this.

This was a watershed match for Lendl & McEnroe. After repeated failure in the grand slam finals in the early 80s, Lendl got this huge breakthrough & went on smoothly for the years to come & dominated for 5,6 years; only the grass courts dominated by Edberg & Becker. McEnroe did not win any grand slam title after 1984
Yeah that's right. I think McEnroe took a year out of the game around 85, because of his marriage to Tatum O'Neil, I don't think he had his ranking protected, so by the time he came back he had to qualify for most of the tournaments. But he did round off in style at Wimbledon in 84, when he destroyed Jimmy Connors 6-1 61 6-2 in the final.

Mcnroe in fact was quite well behaved here. Mc deserved it as much as Lendl. However Ivan won it as he just refused to give up..swam upstream all of 5 sets and crossed the flowing river named Mcnroe!
Why didn't John speak in defeat? He was a sore loser.

McEnroe was tired simple as that. The commentators mentioned this several times late in the match. After 4 hours of playing he popped up a volley. This is the thing about McEnroe, he was probably the most gifted men’s tennis player ever. In his prime with a graphite racket he was almost unbeatable. But it was well known at the time that John didn’t train. He played a lot to try and stay in shape but as he got older, often his physical gifts didn’t work against harder working tennis athletes. The older Mac would fade more often.
If you could get back Mcenroes serve, A top guy in the top 100 could punish him. Until he did drugs, his serve, still punihshed you.
