    I was a huge Ivan Lendl fan growing up. He change the modern game and to hear him recount point after point during this interview gives you a glimpse into the mindset of a professional athlete oh by the way Lendl speaks 5 languages so he understood everything the interviewer was saying.

    • @jonglewongle3438
      @jonglewongle3438 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought he spoke 6 languages. But you would find that he is better in some than in others. He goes okay in English, and he'll converse more efficiently in that than Swahili, even though he can get by in Swahili. Same with the Scandinavians, such as the Swedes and Danes. They are taught English, and can do it, but they much prefer their native dialects.

    Very similar score to their world team match in 1985. 6-7, 7-6,. 6-3. McEnroe played really well against Lendl on red clay in 1984,1985 and 1988. He was a underrated clay court player

      He was! He held a match point in that 1985 encounter, and lost just one other match (by default) in three World Team Cup appearances, beating the likes of Lendl (in 1984), Clerc, Higueras, Aguilera, Sanchez and Jaite.

    MacEnroe was a unique player, comparing him with others doesn't make sense because nobody ever played like he did. He had the greatest wrist ever, people say his technique was simple so why wasn't he copied ? We watch tennis because we want to dream and John was a magician doing sleight of hand with a tennis ball. Today's players are fit and strong but there isn't much difference in style. Times change.

    Match of stunning quality! But it's made that extra special because of the contrast of styles that was still IN BALANCE. The magic of Johnny Mac was in full display here in way that Roger can never equal with Rafa.
    Modern technology and bio-mechanics and Phisio training completely tipped the balance in favour of the styles ushered by Lendl !
    P.S. While these were/are my two favourite players of the era - I feel an urge to string my Max 200G with low tension syn Gut (Nat Gut?) and go out and try a bit of that magic :-)

    • @luperamos7307
      @luperamos7307 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, I don't understand why no limits are set when it comes to racket technology. In baseball you have to use a wooden bat. Remember the 1990s when players like Sampras came along and just dominated with their serve? It was unwatchable. Now it's just pure baseline tennis and super huge rackets. The contrast of styles made tennis so good.

    • @fundhund62
      @fundhund62 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@luperamos7307 Also, it's not like people didn't see it coming. McEnroe and Connors (among others) repeatedly talked about the danger of tennis becoming more and more one-dimensional ("the young guys hit it hard, and if that doesn't work, they hit it harder").
      As a matter of fact, even the 1990s, enjoyable as the still were on occasion, were already a huge backwards step.
      Just compare a match like this to any Agassi-Courier encounter, and you'll see what I mean.
      Today, tennis is borderline unwatchable.
      It's great in terms of statistics, but the actual game is but a shadow of what it used to be.

    Had there been no rain delay during the first day of the 1988 French Open 4th Round match between McEnroe and Lendl, McEnroe would have probably defeated Lendl because Lendl served poorly on the first day of that match missing a lot of first serves. @ Jason Cowell. First, I doubt that chair umpire Richard Ings "hated" John McEnroe despite their verbal confrontation during a McEnroe match at the U.S. Open early in Ings' chair umpiring career, although no chair umpire, obviously, liked to be verbally abused by McEnroe. Second, Richard Ings was not the chair umpire in the 1988 French Open 4th Round match between McEnroe and Lendl! Rich Kauffman was the chair umpire for that match! Third, the point that you are probably referring to was the one in which Lendl hit a shot that landed on or very close to McEnroe's baseline on the deuce court side of McEnroe's side of the court during the second set tiebreaker. This videotape of part of that match doesn't show the discussion by McEnroe with Kauffman over the baselinesman's call of good on Lendl's forehand that hit on or near McEnroe's baseline, but as I recall, McEnroe asked Kauffman to ask the baselinesman to go check the mark and Kauffman didn't order the baselinesman to check the mark. That was the mistake Kauffman made. And he himself (Kauffman) should have gotten out of the chair to check for the mark on or near the baseline to verify if the baselinesman made the correct call on that point.

In early 1988 he had a stress fracture in his foot, he got the chest injury here, a thigh injury at Wimbledon and then later in 1988 he needed surgery on his shoulder.

    How is it Americans are never thought how to move on clay? Well, apart from Currier. Mac and Agassi did well considering they refused to slide into the shot.

    • @MrPernell27
      @MrPernell27 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Denis Daly there are very few red clay courts in america. Also, the grips americans use are generally for faster surfaces with lower bounces. Americans tend to be more aggressive which isn't always good on slow clay. Especially the slow clay of the 1980's. Agassi won 1 French open and lost in 2 finals so he did better than ok

    John's game works on lightning reflexes, but he loses a step in post-1989 and his level of play on clay drops dramatically. No more GS singles, but he does win GS doubles. Is John McEnroe the best doubles player of all time?

    • @sebbytennis4298
      @sebbytennis4298 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s partly to do with the fact that he uses a continental forehand grip, a grip more suitable for slice backhand and volleys and serves in some cases. Basically this grip isn’t designed to generate power with heavy top spin like Lendl Leconte Gasquet Federer or Wavrinka. Mac compensated with amazing touch and a very loose strung racket generating his power by taking the ball early after the bounce. His style of play and shot making was also very economical and perhaps too casual if not lazy or careless at times.... But you’re right the way he goes about hitting a tennis ball is certainly very different than anyone I’ve seen at the top level in the history of the game. There is a video of him playing basketball and even then he looks awkward but ever so efficient

    • @fundhund62
      @fundhund62 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It´s plain ridiculous to assume that "his game from the 80´s wouldn´t work". Guys like Lendl pretty much played today´s game, only with different equipment, and more variety.
      Back in the day, if they couldn´t overpower McEnroe with big serves, they usually didn´t have much chance. And that could very well be the same with today´s stars. I don´t see how Nadal or Djokovic could outserve him, and they certainly couldn´t outfinesse him.. so they might very well find themselves on the losing side of things.
