Just a great man raised by great parents who reached levels of greatness that most players never even get close to. I know it's not a exact science but I always feel better with sports players who's parents refused to let McEnroe settle for second best in everything, even tiddlywinks. And I once had a few beers with him backstage at an oasis gig and a few Mary Jane cigarettes. He'd been retired so long by then and I just thought it's so cool he had the will to say no to drugs during his career but once he retired he started living his life his way. One of the goat

This was fantastic. John at fifty-ten years old. A beautiful person.
When Patty spoke of how John recieved his mother-in-law in his home with tears in her eyes, that really got to me. That really shows the character and goodness of the man. I had already seen evidence of that when, at his induction at the Tennis Hall of Fame, he dedicated it to Patty's daughter, John's stepdaughter. That's class. And when Tatum O'Neal's brother testified in favor of John for custody of their children, knowing his sister was not in a good place and needed to focus on getting better. When your brother-in-law supports you, that's a seal of approval.
He may have been an uncontrolled brat on court when he was young, but his soul is beautiful.
We are so proud of you Johnny Mac.
Shame about the '84 French Open, though (when you see an open wound, you must add a pinch of salt and a dash of lemon juice to properly season it).

Interesting that John McEnroe hypocritically refers to the performance-enhancing drugs taken by modern athletes. I remember reading somewhere on the internet when (I believe it was in 2012) he admitted that the last 6 years of his pro tennis career, he was taking horse steroid! Even though at the time of his admission, he stated that he didn't know what the trainer(s) were putting in him, the claim that he didn't know is simply not believable. Does he really expect people to believe that for 6 years in a row he didn't know what trainers or doctors were putting in his body? Most, if not all, pro athletes undoubtedly know, even if they deny it, what trainers or doctors are putting in their bodies!

McEnroe was the reason I took up playing tennis myself (at age 24....) and the love for the game and the man has never left me. It was the Wimbledon final he lost, the first time I saw this unique young man, who intrigued me so much. He was (and still is) "rock 'n roll" and perhaps that was a huge factor as well as his creativity on the court.. in those years I worked in the music industry so somehow Mac was my perfect fit perhaps.

John you are at the same time the tennisplayer I hated most (because Borg could never win US Open because of YOU!!) and the player
I most admired because no other player (even today 35 years later) ever had such a beautiful and artistic way of playing tennis.

First, this is an outstanding docu-interview by Sue Barker and BBC. Next... am I the only one who thinks "something is wrong, neurologically" when watching John just sitting on the coach and talking? All that bobbing and weaving looks almost spasmodic. Mac is on the short list of the GOATs!

Johnny Mac's greatest appeal (at least in my mind) is that he's relatable and loyal. He seems like the kind of guy who, once your friend, will be there for you 'til the end. Great documentary.

John used to get kicked out of the United Center for yelling "you cannot play SIRIUS!" at Bulls games during the Jordan Era.
