Hello everyone! Thaanks for your kind comments! I haven't been able to individually respond to a lot of you at this point because as you guys know, I'm on a trip to Canada still and taking more time with my family!
A lot of you mentionned me pronouncing "Pisces" wrong. Heh well, I knew it was the zodiac sign, but I thought that's how it was pronounced somehow. :P That's what happens when English isn't your native language. but now that I know I won't mix it up again ;)

Elvann on Jinjer’s new album Macro, there is a song called ‘Home Back’ which has a tantalizing full on jazz break in it. Tatiana’s voice suits it perfectly as you suspected

To be frank, even the Englishman of London would admit that English as a language has a lot of phonetic inconsistency. One group of letters may have 5 different pronunciations in 5 different words. But languages evolve pretty much like live organisms so that explains it.

I recommend you to listen to their song "Teacher, Teacher" then. The singer does even more diverse stuff there, and the first thing I though about the clean vocal parts was that she's giving it a jazzy or bluesy vibe.

Alot of people think growling dosen't take skill but without the proper training you can ruin your vocal cords

    • @FairsleyDifference
      @FairsleyDifference 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Fry screams as seen in this video (and all of Tatiana’s work) by definition do not damage your vocal cords at all, since they bypass them entirely. False cord screams do though, but that’s an entirely different technique and no amount of training can avoid it long-term.

NikosDriehuis I’ve heard her say the opposite. And she also said she never smoked marijuana in her life, yet wears hemp pants and High Life Magazine shirts at a sizable percentage of her shows. She talks. Also, false cord screams require a non-stop full flow of air to maintain, so it is literally impossible to switch from clean vocals and back or to properly enunciate words since you can’t really use your tongue and throat muscles.

Me too. I'm not a huge fan of growling/screaming. Took years to ever hear passed that with Lamb of God. I don't mind it with Opeth. I like a balance. Jinjer on the other hand feels different. I don't even notice there's screaming. I dig the music so much and her voice fits it so well, it just flows and it's so easy to digest. The new album is really balanced out with all types of singing. They are really a unique band that happens to be fronted by a bad ass woman.

Oh my...I love Jinjer almost as much as Nightwish. Almost! One of the most innovative and hard working bands on the Metal scene. I am happy they have graduated to headlining tours now. They are so creative in the way they blend different influences into their music, from jazz to reggae (Judgement & Punishment, from their new album being a good example) and back again. Tatiana is probably the second nicest woman in Metal, after You Know Who. 😜 The whole band are eloquent in interviews, and Eugene runs a close second behind Marko in terms of his mastery of the Bass.

I’m off to see them on Saturday, for the second time this year. They are amazing live. The energy Tatiana brings is unreal and to see the boys play, especially Eugene (he’s my man crush) is awesome. He is one of the best bassists ive heard - in my opinion. They all blend together so well.
Their skills are unparalleled and Tatiana‘s writing skills are what make their songs super special. They touch on some really tough subject matter at times. She is deep!
She does have a jazzy style and often says that she enjoys and takes inspiration from that type of music. Amy Winehouse is one of her idols. Who’s gonna be the one has a part at the end where she displays this and a track on their latest album home back. She touches on a reggae vibe on this album also. She’s very versatile and the composition of all tracks is tight! Jinjer doesn’t have a genre.... they are the genre. 👍🏼
Pisces is a great song, but there are much better. I can’t think of one bad song! The track bad water is probably the only song I’ve heard where she just sings cleans.
Thanks for the review! 👍🏼 hopefully you will cover some of their other material.

Step forward and meet a new sunrise
    A coward is shivering inside
Today I'll, I'll be a friend of mine who swallows
    Suffering with smile
    I drew a different reality
    With unconditional loyalty
Ego hardly can be piqued 'cause I'm selfless
    Scale armour blaze
    Virgin innocence
    One being brings life
    Another runs for death
    Scale armour blaze
    Virgin innocence
    One being brings life
    Another runs for death
    No promises I ever give
Don't rely on me and I won't deceive
The beginning or the end you can't tell
When I wave my fin and shake my tail
    I grew in different normality
    With unblamable morality
Hooks and nets are there for me but I'm skittish
    Scale armour blaze
    Virgin innocence
    One being brings life
    Another runs for death
    Scale armour blaze
    Virgin innocence
    One being brings life
    Another runs for death
    Neptune's child shivering inside
    Drowns in the liquid gold
Cherished his life to the underworld
Meet me flashing when the winter cries
    Pisces swimming through the river
All their life against the stream
Searching for a hook to catch on
    And see their sun beam
    Then suffocate in painful tortures
On cutting tables of callous men
Under a knife of handsome butchers emeralds are ripped away
    Emeralds are ripped away

Unfortunately, Tatiana's comments on her unhappiness with this error are no longer available on line. Her Facebook page was deleted (hacked, I think) and recreated, so many years of posts were lost. • @j.f.fisher5318
    @j.f.fisher5318 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Great reaction. Awesome that you got to see them live. Having seen them at a regular concert, she's even more mesmerizing up close. :) I never liked growls from anyone male or female until I discovered them and then became an instant fan.
One reason the growls sound unnatural in this video is they did two layers. I'd recommend Perennial at Wacken for a recent performance with a balanced mix of growls and cleans which is a master class in stage presence and dramatic performance while singing. There are several people saying Who Is Gonna Be The One which isn't a mistake - it's my favorite song and the official live video is an awesome performance. But its mostly growls so I feel like you'll have more to talk about with Perennial.
What she's doing with her growls is a matter of some discussion. There is video of her performing a duet with Lena from Infected Rain but her mic wasn't working but in one section her growls are still audible so it certainly isn't fake. But she seems to be able to get the power of false cord growls which blow a huge volume of air through open vocal cords to make the false cords create sound, while also doing sustained long growling lines which is more characteristic of fry screams with closed vocal cords. It is supposed to be hard to transition between the different styles seamlessly. So she seems to be doing something superhumanly well - either superhuman depth and power in fry screams, superhuman length of growls with false cords, or superhuman control to be able to switch seamlessly between fry screams and false cord growls, or the ability to create growls using some technique nobody else seems to be using.

Favorited! :) That moment when someone who is a Pisces (I don't believe in astrology, though) watches a reaction video to a song video called Pisces. :D I enjoyed your reaction to the video. I like how she can go from grrrr to singing vocals. She makes it look easy. I've known about the band for awhile, but it looks like they've gotten much more popular. I like how they go from mellow to heavy and it just fits together perfectly. Also, not related, but I like the different color you added to your hair!

You are correct when you said that Tatiana (lead singer for Jinjer) can sing in a "jazzy" voice. Check out the end of the song " Who's gonna be the one" and you will hear her do reggae in the song "Judgement and Punishment".

If you want to hear something more jazzy to suit her voice I strongly suggest you listen to beggars dance. It's kinda a stand out compared to the rest of their songs I feel. It has a very strong jazz feel I think.

What you said at the beginning about the close mic, which you said "Brings out the intimacy and bass notes." While true, it is dependant on the choice of microphone, on a large diaphragm, condenser mic, this would be the case, however, the mic she is using, an Electrovoice RE20, is a dynamic microphone, usually used to record anything with a high SPL, we use them on Saxophones! This particular microphone s built to handle high sound pressure levels, any engineer would have spotted that straight away. Although not unheard of, it is an odd selection for a vocal recording, but I can see why it was chosen for this. Just thought I'd clarify that for you. Anyway, great reaction, Tatiana has an amazing talent, and it deserves to be showcased, thank you.

In "Teacher, Teacher" Tatiana switches from clean to growl and back to clean mid-sentence and does even more "voices". Should impress you even more. Hereby recommended. In addition to her astounding versatility voice-vise, I am truly impressed by the clarity of her (also in-tune) growls; you can understand more of those words than from any other "growler" I remember hearing. Also her growling can go shockingly deep for a petite-ish woman in some of these newer songs.
TIP: The light on your face is a little too harsh. It washes out some facial details and makes your face look unnaturally white.

Tatiana has credited Ella Fitzgerald as an influence, so, there's definitely some jazz in there. Plus, the bass player, Eugene, credits Victor Wooten, and, the late master, Jaco Pastorius as his big influences, so, musically, they have a lot of jazz influence as well.

The scream she does basically I have a hard time describing it. However the technique and how to develop it I can shine some light on. (I'm not a vocal teach, it's just this is a style I have done before to a large extent)
so basically this is distortion, very similar to rock vocal distortion. We're going to go back to basic language for a second to define what I mean when I say vocalized or non/not vocalized The idea that some sounds are the same shape, like "ta" and "da" The shape we make is the same, just ta is non vocalized, there is no vocal engagement, Pa, and Ba, same thing. now that we have the idea outlined.
The section she belts, you commented on the transition, it's an easier transition than you think. Her type of screaming relies on non vocalized distortion. The stages to get to it as it was taught to me.
Step 1, take a good breath like you're about to sing your line, then let it out very slowly (for some, think of it like taking a drag off a cigarette or joint, and trying to say something while holding it in.)
as you go through the line, letting out as little air as you can you should feel a creek in your voice. Feel it. Remember it. It's important.
Try to hold that feeling with a little more volume, and a little more, lean into it..if it hurts, start over, you're doing it wrong.
it should feel like the air is bubbling out of your throat, the feeling should be at the top of the throat where it hits the bottom of the mouth (basically it feels like it's almost behind the jaw)
Step 2, work up to it, getting louder, until you can hold the faux scream over a note. (this is important if you want to do more than just scream)
Step 3, once you can grab that feeling and really lean into it. Stop vocalizing the words. Just keep that engaged and it will be a white noise ish scream.
Step 4, Use your mouth and tongue position to control the tone and pitch, making less space (by say lifting your tongue creates a smaller passage for the same amount of air and in doing so forces it to move faster, the pitch therefore goes up. more space, pitch goes down.
Then figuring out how to shape it to get the right phonetic sounds to come out.
That's summarized there's a bit more to it, but that's the idea of how it works. you have to still vocalize certain letter sounds. V comes to mind. but once you can do that, transitioning back is just backing off that feeling, and fully vocalizing again.
I hope this helps. I know it's not a great guide, like I said I'm not a teacher. Just someone that has been in a lot of bands, doing various styles, and this is how I was taught to approach it.
