      @@TheMuserResolute No, I could see the anticipation of a musical change. You knew something was going to ramp up soon, same as I did when I first heard this. I could see you feeling it coming, and it was pretty clear that you wanted to talk about the first section before you got into the more aggressive chorus...you just hit it perfectly to remain unaware just how aggressive it actually is.

    The band is over 10 years old. They had several changes among the musicians, especially for the drummers. The vocalist is Tatiana, bassist is Eugene, guitarist is Roman and drummer is Vlad. They've grown big since this song "Pisces". Vlad is remarkable for playing open-handed and usually on small kits but with a huge sound, he is a fine technician on his instrument, plays a lot of ghost notes, but also plays the guitar and the piano. Eugene is remarkable for pushing bass forward, tapping and sliding, and being very technical too on his instrument (mainly a five-string bass). Roman is not often mentionned, and that is a shame, because he does not have the typical profile of a metal-guitarist. You'll scarcely hear soli or choruses, but the work he does, melodically and rhythmically is absolutely mindblowing. And well Tatiana is close to be a legend, probably the best current metal vocalist: her cleans are impeccable, her growls can be very deep and powerful. She also masters the stage (you'll see if you check "Perennial" live as suggested below) and her lyrics are more than worth reading. Let us not forget how beautiful most of her vocal proposals are on the melodies the boys compose. This band is unique, their influences are numerous, ranging from progressive rock to reggae, blues, etc, which gives them a pretty unique sound. They are also very tight. At last, you noticed it, time changes are their signature. Enjoy your discovery of this amazing band, imho the best band of this decade. Cheers!

    The problem with people recommending this version is that it has post production, even if the session was recorded live, so lots of people end up assuming her pitch is modified somehow. She does it live effortless, tho, no electronic adjustment required. The scene with the pedal is the guitar turning on its distortion, not the mic, you can see there's nothing of the sort around her. There's doubling added in post, but it's a different recording of her own voice, and there some delay as well in some of the clean parts.

    Metal vocalist here! From what I can tell, Tatiana uses the same growling technique that I do. The vocal chords are actually relaxed and are not making noise, instead the false vocal folds are making the noise, and when done correctly doesn't hurt the voice at all and is quite sustainable. The sound of it is of course dependent upon individual physiology. Hope this helps explain things a little :)

      I've no idea why people keep recommending the live version. She's good live, but it becomes very apparent how much doubling up and reverb they use for the studio recordings to make her vocals sound more full, and her range live is never quite as good and her transitions aren't as smooth, and the growls are more flat.

    • @blazehnt
      @blazehnt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MudHut67 I know what you are talking about and I agree in some level, but i think that the effects are necessary because its so difficult to have both growling and clean vocals in a high level. And I like this live version in special because it was their last set song and they performed like it was in the beginning or middle of the set showing so much energy, and not every band can do this.

    This is all her. Across the board, they are amazing. Tatiana's vocals do have some effects here...but they're also pure. What's added is purely background. The tone, the transitions, the emphasis and the purity of her cleans AND growls is real. She demonstrates this on many songs and is as good (or better) live than in videos. ---------------- If I understood correctly from what I've seen/read, this was a "try out" for the drummer. Their previous drummer was let go and this was essentially a "try out". This guy is now (and has been for a while) their drummer due either in part or in full to his incredible performance here.

      This wasn't a try out. Vlad had already been playing with them (since early to mid 2016) before they decided to rerecord this track with him. Dmitry Kim wasn't "let go", he left because the deal he had with Jinjer was to replace Mantulin until the band found a new drummer. : )

    Well, now you know why this song was requested so much. It's one of their few songs with a long clean vocal section at the beginning and people recommend it for the 'gotcha' moment. Once you get past the initial shock of Tati's harsh vocals and dig into the music it's apparent just how good this band is as a whole. As good as this song is, I still feel it's at the lower end of what they are capable of. They also have a wide range of influences and like to incorporate other genres into their music.
    They had a second guitarist for their first two albums, but he left to pursue other interests. As far as their popularity in Ukraine, I'm sure they are now but I remember them talking in an interview about having to make the decision to leave and tour elsewhere to gain exposure so they actually gained more recognition outside of the country before they did there. Speaking of touring, they play a ton of shows and are excellent live. Last year they did over 150 concerts.
    There are other bands with female singers who can do harsh vocals, but Tati is probably my favorite for her overall ability as a vocalist and a performer on stage. Some others are Spiritbox, Infected Rain, Arch Enemy, and Otep.

    I'd suggest the band Spiritbox for something in a similar vein of having incredibly skilled musicians and an incredible vocalist.
    Rule of Nines or Blessed Be are two good introductions. There's also The Mara Effect, though that is essentially a 3-part song and the total length is over 20 minutes so might be a bit rough for a video.

      My ears say that the whole song was doubled?, so not truly “live”, but just a unique day’s rerecording. The distorted guitar sustains beyond the clean coming back in as well. But I don’t think the distorted vocals are any more processed than the clean, you’ll see in any of their other songs, distorted “Death voice” is her preferred mode of metal, the other tones used for contrast, the more contrast the more progressive. Just the first verse went from 7/8, to 6/8, to 4/4, they’re not much interested in simple...

    Tatianna, the vocalist, describes herself as a shy, introverted geek. What you see in this video, and especially at her concerts, is her stage presence. She built up her stage presence over time, and has said without it she could never step on a stage. While I know what most people say about her growl sound, one reacter had a unique, and cool, description by saying it suddenly sounded like a thousand soldiers were roaring, rather than the typical, “she sounds like an angel... oh my goodness! Where’d that demon come from??” Also, I heard one vocal coach say the muscles she uses to make the growl are the same muscles needed to sing opera. That is why/how she can switch between gentle and growl and back so effortlessly.
    One more thing, they hired Vlad three days before this live video was filmed.

    • @DistalX

      I doubt the part about muscles =) To sing groul, scream etc. you need false cord (it's not create any pitch for ur sound, but correct use of it gives you vocal that scratchy sound, and the pitch you take sounds much lower.) in other case it will hurt you. Opera ignore this part of you vocal eqipment because it's doesn't need to them.

      @@DistalX I don't believe that vocal coach meant the exact same muscles. He did also mention the false chord, stating she worked both the false chord and her additional muscle work in tandem to create her growl. I call it a growl because it never feels like she is s reaming at me when I listen to it. Now in some of her other songs she does have a scream sound. Her "one-take of Judgement and Punishment" has a very obvious scream. But to say she is not using muscles to make her distinctive sound seems dismissive in my opinion. The way she switches so quickly and naturally requires a lot of work and practice, and she herself has said so (with the disclaimer to not attempt to mimic her sound), and requires both vocal work and muscle actions.

    • @DistalX
      @DistalX 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Pecos1 The point tis that you can mix your distortion with standard vocal in different proportion. The better you as a singer, the better your control over that mix. You can hear Chad Kroeger with just a little adding of distortion like 15%, someone like David Draiman with like 40%, and of course Tatiana with 75-80% of distortion, they all have a good contol and can choose, btw you can hear Tatiana's, let's call it 15%, in Piscies bridge. The diferences between growl and scream in a tone, the technique is same. You hear it in such a different way because we call growling a chest voice with distortion adding, and screaming is mix or head voice, like Chester Bennington. But the distortion sound without your vocal cord is just a mechanic scratchy sound without a pitch(note) not sure how to call it correct. Oh and about same muscle, I think you should know Davin Thousand. He is a great example of how close to opera voice will sound with growl.

    Perfect reaction, I love watching people that know music listen to Jinjer. The syncopated polyrhythms, bass and drum fillers, and the time shifts are phenomenal. You could throw any member in a prog-Jazz band and none would losing a step.
    Tatiana Shmayluk is the vocalist, simply put, she’s at the top of the female extreme vocalist echelon.
    The only effects added to her vocals in this song are a compression (light), slight echo, and a very subtle chorus effect which are all fading in and out throughout the song. She doesn’t use (or need) a pitch shifter or added distortion. ALL OF the abrasive screams are all HER.

A *very* special and talented singer... that tonal shift when doing the demon/distorted vocals always makes me go "... whoah!... DAMN GIRL!" because I have *NEVER* heard of that before from *ANY* artist... Even though I don't really listen to metal/death metal/growl vocals, I do pay attention to what I do hear (do to my personal emphasis on lyrics and vocals in general), I can honestly say I have never heard such a clean and definite clear (large) pitch shift done in growl vocals (definitely not bu that amount/much or even that cleanly)... She is definitely something special, just a shame that I, personally, don't care for most metal music personally (it all bends together too much into a single noise for me personally, probably due to my personal hearing issues).... From an objective perspective (regardless of whether I like the song or not), they have skill and talent (instruments don't play themselves and singing isn't skilless), a solid melody, etc (I could go on, but I've already made the point that music is not a skill-less activity)... In other words, your opinion is mistaken at best and ignorantly shallow at worst, ngl... Check out the rest of Jinjer's recent work (and their old stuff, but i really think they hit full stride with their Macro album, which is their most recent), and some more reaction-bait songs with great vocals, Slaughter To Prevail - Demolisher, MTR's got a video for that one for sure, for ultimate female-heavy-HEAVY songs, maybe give Spiritbox - Holy Roller a shot (good song on it's own, but, music video really actually adds to it, atmospherically), Lamb of God - Memento Mori was a fun one (video also recommended), but, Holy Roller was a mindf*** because that's not their usual style, and in my mind, it's the heavy song of the year, arguably song of the year period.
      Sorry for the long ramble of sh!t, but, if you enjoyed Tatiana/Jinjer, I think you'll love those, all of them are actual musical talent, with a good singing/harmony and "I'm literally a demon" sections, backed by other great musicians.

    Fun reaction - subbed. I've seen them twice in concert, and tbh was _more_ impressed after seeing her live than anything video can capture. Also, she can push her growls much lower than this. And then there are her excursions into entirely different genres - rap, reggae, jazz, blues. Vlad on drums, Roman on guitar, and Eugene on bass are always awesome too.
    Growls aren't done with the vocal cords, or at least not the way singing and speaking are depending on the technique. So our ideas of male and female voice don't really apply with those techniques. The size of the instrument does matter, so if you compare Jinjer covering Lamb of God's song Laid to Rest (the 2012 bootleg by NosSam has the best sound) to live video of the original, 6'1" Randy Blythe is able to go lower than 5'4" Tatiana can. But Randy is a legendary growler who built his growling skills on a background as a classically trained singer, and he worked with Melissa Cross to improve his growls and be sure his technique was solid so he wouldn't mess up his clean singing voice. Properly performed growls are less dangerous than intense clean singing, btw, and endoscope studies suggest that when correctly performed, they should never cause vocal injury. Of course, the keyword there is "correctly performed" and plenty of growlers have damaged their voices along the way. Tatiana by contrast is entirely self-taught as a growler, and her cleans are mostly self-taught aside from a few months of classes as a kid that she didn't have the discipline to stick with. Her skills are incredibly impressive but by no means unprecedented. There are quite a few female growlers who are working or have worked at a similar level, though few of them have her clean singing skills on top of those epic growls. On the other end of the spectrum, if you search for Pisces covers on YT you can see what women (and no few guys) have done with this song at varying levels of skill.
    Tati had been singing constantly for fun all her life, but was inspired to sing metal at 15 after hearing Otep growl and being shocked to find out that Otep is a woman. She had an intuition that she could shock people like that and started singing cleans in various local bands to build her clean singing foundation. At 18 she started practicing growling while still performing with clean vocals, and practiced growls for 4 years before integrating growls into her performances in the band she sang with for a bit before being recruited to join Jinjer in late 2009 when their then male singer was getting ready to leave, doing the last song for their first EP "Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear." She is 33 now and has been with Jinjer for a bit over a decade, and her skills are constantly improving.
    Perennial live at Wacken is a great followup. They did a tiny bit of post-production tweaking of that as well, adding some light clean layering in at least one spot that isn't in the bootleg. But it is the best video for someone who isn't primarily into growling to see what Tatiana can do with a well-rounded song on stage. To see how low she can go, the most savage growls on any video they have released are Pit of Consciousness live in Kiev. Someone mentioned Who Is Gonna Be The One in the comments - it is a great song and my favorite song by any band, and the official live video is a classic video by them and well worth checking out. But I don't know how many Jinjer videos you are going to do and it was 3 years ago while her skills are always growing, so if you want to see what Tati can do with her full range of growls more recently, Pit of Consciousness live in Kiev would be my next recommendation after Perennial.

What you want to do is react to the Teacher Teacher official video. It’s live and you will see the band and Tatiana at the top of their game.Have the lyrics handy since her vocal skills are used to bring them home in the form of a gut punch. It is also some of the best video produced in a long time. The Noise video by Nightwish is in the same ballpark. Time was taken to learn the song and performance, get the right camera shots and then the editing only helped to make that gut punch harder.

      Yeah and there is a clear view of her with no obstruction and the floor around her is pedal free. that should be easy to see that it is the lead guitar's distortion pedal.

    By far the best reaction to this song, and believe me, i've watched a lot, probably as many other Jinjer fans have, want to see the face of course.
    Your joy hearing the song just made me subscribe to you, but you made me realize why i loved this song from the start, the changes, vocals, the drumming and the contrast, i knew it but i could not put my finger on it, and you explained it all. :)

    I have easily watched 100+ reactions to this video.
    Yours just made the top 3 list.
    Not only was it pure and honest, but as a fellow musician, it was great to see somone notice the little things like I did when I first heard it.
    The band is legit, and so is Tatiana's voice.
    Welcome to jinjer. 👍♥️

    Always fun seeing a 1st time listener of Tatiana and Jinjer. Your face cracked me up😂 I’m sure by now plenty of ppl have told u that is not a vocal effects pedal it’s for the electric guitar. That scream is all her. Every band member is incredible at their craft!!!But yes this session has had post production added.

    It is SO refreshing to find someone that reacts to music that obviously has a huge passion and respect for every aspect of it. Most "reaction" videos are simplified dribble where they'll listen to a song, give you 3 seconds of what they think the lyrics meant (which are usually WAY off), then try to sell you a t-shirt with their name on it. My respects to you, sir.

    • @semmert
      @semmert 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean, just watching your face while the song is playing is beyond what you get from any other "react" videos out there. I love it. You're here for the music. plain and simple.

    she does it for real, there's no electronic trickery. only the normal usual production you expect on any mix, I mean reverb, double tracking, the stuff you do to vocal tracks, but she's doing it for real. she does it live too.

    I had to watch your reaction to this one when I saw it here. First reactions to Pisces are always fun! I almost thought you were going to spoil the surprise when you paused right as the song changed, but you restarted and definitely got the shock everyone was expecting. Tatiana is really great. I don't listen to much metal, but performances like this one are slowly pulling me in.

    I really appreciate your reaction/response to this performance!! 🙌💣🔥I've watched hella reaction videos of this song ((from vocalists and otherwise)) & you've brought up a bunch of different points to focus on ((ex::Tatiana's vocal doubling effect)) that I had never realized/recognized &/or consciously distinguished before.
    Your facial expressions are sooo on point too!! Your reaction is exactly how I feel inside even still today after hearing it probably like 6937284 times haha 😝😁
    In conclusion, you definitely got me as a new subscriber 😌
    Thanks for the awesome video!! 🤘💯

    Watching the reactions to this video has become my quarantine guilty pleasure (I’ve seriously watched a hundred of them). Everyone comments the same that knows Jinjer, but it’s the calmness that pulls people in and then hit with the surprising death growls. This song is also old and was recorded with their old drummer, who was good but didn’t have the technical prowess that Vlad has...he completely changed the dynamics of most of the song. They’ve actually mentioned doing this version to have a recorded version with Vlad’s drumming. Also, I’d imagine her layered vocals are from the original recording.

    Btw, (drummer here) those multiple light snare hits you are trying to described can be considered “ghost notes”
