I would like to suggest for the one take vocal performance, if you choose to react to that, that you either make it a double feature, the official video and the one take, or at least watch the video before/after the vocal performance, as a comparison.

Just a constructive criticism: the audio from the song is echoing through your room as well as playing directly from the video so it sounds like two versions are playing at around 10 milliseconds latency - choose one output! Loved the video thanks for sharing your insights :D
Fun reaction. Best explanation of growls by a non-growling specialist I've seen - kudos, and subbed. Yeah, that commitment you point out really comes through on stage. I've been lucky enough to see them twice and she is a mesmerizing performer who always gives 110%. There is a lot of post-production on this, and most of the vocals are unfortunately right off the album - the live session was actually to record their new drummer at the time. :( If you do any further reactions to their work, there are some great concert videos. Perennial live at Wacken is the consensus recommendation among their fans to recommend as a next step for people who aren't specifically into metal. It is a great performance where her stage presence is on fire and shows off more of her clean technique including even faster switching between growls and cleans than here, but not going into belting, though she does a really long and powerful sustained note sequence. Judgement & Punishment one-take she does some reggae, great belting, and powerful growls without as much post-production as this video has, and even has a tiny error left in which makes me feel like it is very raw. Teacher Teacher live in Melborne is really well rounded and has a few lines where she switches between cleans and growls in mid-line. Their most recent video Sit Stay Roll Over live in Melbourne is a concert performance of arguably their most aggressive song and she really shows off her growling technique, including going even lower with her growls than she does here. Cheers!
The best part of witnessing people react to this song is the reaction to the first time she switches to the growl. Never gets old and every reactor has the same response.
Loved this reaction... now for the vocal one take of Judgement and Punishment, then maybe Perennial Live at Wacken, and then maybe I speak Astronomy...
A lot of people leave "I Speak Astronomy" off of their suggestions - but for me, it's one of their absolute best. The false ending gives me chills, every time.
Matt Krogmeier Definitely - it was one of the first songs of theirs that made me really sit up and listen. Unfortunately, the official video clip can be distracting from the music, but there is an excellent love version - the Wacken show, Inthink...
She’s a beast at what she does, react to Perennial live at wacken 2019 💪 I know you’re reacting to Nightwish I recommend you to listen to Epica, it’s symphonic metal like Nightwish but heavier.
Looking forward to your next Jinjer reaction, that was really great! Enjoyed it a lot :-) Couple excellent suggestions for your next song by them, soon hopefully. "Perennial" live in Wacken 2019. And then Tatiana's one take vocal performance of Judgement and Punishment.
Great reaction !!!! Really loved hearing your input about Queen Tatiana's vocals, But I will say listen to the band as well cause Roman(lead Guitar) Vlad (Drums), Eugene (Bass Guitar) are AMAZING as well !!!!!! Welcome to the Jinjer Army !!!! of course, Perennial (Live at Wacken), Who's Gonna be the One, Teacher Teacher, Cloud Factory (Live) , Then Newer Live Performances - One the Top (Live in Kiev) and Pit of Consciousness (Live in Kiev) !!!!
It never gets old watching your reaction of this song. You have an exceptional way of doing your analysis but then that inner excitement of the singer/music comes out on video. You dear lady are amazing! Thanks for reacting and breaking down her singing🙏🏼🌹💕
Thanks .This work of modern art deserves only such intelligent and meaningful reactions and analysis .Tatiana is not only a talented vocalist ,but also a songwriter .You need to see her live stage performance to appreciate her other talent -great stage presence . "Perennial " live at Wacken2019 -is a good example .
As a vocal coach, you now need to watch Jinjer's "Judgment and Punishment" One Take. Not only do you get this type of performance, but you get to STUDY how she does it.. Definitely worth the watch...!
She did say in an interview that she would scream into a pillow or out in the woods for like 6 years before doing it in front of anyone also she practiced alot of Randy Blythe from Lamb of God
@@markread2580 that said, they do a sound check before performances playing and singing bits of their songs, there are some videos of them doing it. Also Tatiana says she sings just about constantly, so she may never really cool down.
Thank you so much for this reaction video. It is wonderful to relive my first hearing of Pisces through your eyes and I really enjoyed you explaining the technical aspects of her performance. While perennial live at Wacken shows her amazing personality on stage and her stamina if you want to see her progression as a vocalist the one take performance of judgement and punishment should be interesting to you. I for one would love to hear your thoughts about that.
+1 for Teacher, Teacher (live in Australia). Not only does she go higher than this song live, but also she flips back and forth between clean and growl a lot.
I think that was probably the best explanation of the growling technique that I have seen ever since I first watched this video two years ago. Thank you.
love watching everyone's first time reactions to this song! it's always a complete stunner when she drops that first scream and no one is ever expecting it let alone how absolutely clean she is on the vocals all around!
That was a fun reaction to see, and you got instantly, what kind of artistic excellence Tatiana Shmailyuk has. A funny side note is, that this song, that went so viral, was not even one of her favorites, and to be honest, there is a lot more awesomeness in this band, this one is just famous for the "shock factor" kind of contrast, which results of the nature of the topic of the lyrics... Actually, she had a few weeks or months of training really early. She had her first stage appearance ever at the age of 8-ish, and started making serious music in bands at the age of 15. As I remember from what I read, she then had a few weeks of pro training, and then actually started out making this a career, nearly instantly thereafter. No matter, how you turn it, she is not also extremely experienced, but also gifted from the start, with the will to do it all, and with a strong motivation to become a singer with NO plan B for a profession to overcome a very difficult political situation in her home country, involving having to move 800km to escape civil war and in the end touring non-stop, her country, Europe, the world, and rest of the band coming from a same type of mindset. So, for sure, you can hardly call it a professional training, most is absolutely worked out by her own except the rudimentary principles of singing, which are for sure important, but do not make you such an exceptional artist. Especially the growling and screaming is a very personal thing to achieve in a convincing somehow natural sounding way and not many can reach this high degree of quality with it, while being primal in character still have a great diction and not sounding forced like other female growlers. She jokes a lot about, how a guy told her when she started growling, that she sounds like a butchered cow. LOL. Also, she states, that she would not be able to teach her way of handling growls and screams. AND, like Courtney LaPlante, who is another queen of clean and growls/screams, she does NOT warm up before a gig, but in the beginning of the gig itself, and they were gigging up to 250 concerts a year. So she has to have a very safe way to do it, otherwise her vocals chords would have died already for sure.:-) From skills and experience, she could easily be a massive pop star and for sure is one of or even THE most amazing vocal artist of all rock and harder genres right now. Yeah, Perennial and Teacher, Teacher are great songs, but "Who is gonna be the one" live shows, what range of extreme vocal techniques and what an immense stage presence and power she is able to produce. But actually, like with Spiritbox/Courtney LaPlante, they have not made any "bad" song ever, her vocals were pretty awesome on their first album already. She is also a great poetic lyricist, while not being a native english speaker, which is admirable.
This is the best reaction video to this song that I've ever seen. I love the way you broke it down, how you went into so much detail about the bodily process of making that sound and including the nervous system in it. Even the Captain Marvel reference was perfect. And how you really understand that art and love being scared by her. Quality.
Loved the reaction! While I will agree with my fellow commenters that Perennial live at Wacken would be a great second reaction, I think that from a vocal trainer standpoint Judgement and Punishment Tatiana one take video might even be better.
Another wonderful female vocalist to check out is Courtney Laplante of Spiritbox. Beautiful clean singing and some of the best female screams out there next to Jinjer. Spiritbox - The Mara Effect 1-3 live in studio
A bit of "technical" feedback: I noticed that the music video is "echoing"; it could be that you also have the music video coming through your speakers, and that the sound is then picked up by your mic as well, causing the echo. Bit of a nuisance to watch, to be honest, so maybe something to look into :) Other than that, great video! :)
@@scottmcdonough4030 No, the first time she paused the video there was a delay between where she paused it and where she edited the pause of the video in.
@Scott McDonough I don't think that's the case; but even if it is, there would be better ways. You can easily avoid YT copyrights by inserting long enough pauses, which she already does anyway to comment on the video, vocal techniques, etc. :)
It is coming through her speakers as well. The echo makes it sounds like she's in a bathroom recording this. And the delay is getting worse between the video and her audio towards the end.
Tatiana's middle name should be "breath control master". Perennial live at Wacken is one of the most impressive examples of that. It's amazing how someone who is basically self-taught managed to control it so well. : ) Don't be fooled by her posture, it doesn't mean she does what you said she did to get a certain vocal "effect" or to be able to produce certain sounds. Again, referring back to Perennial: she sings and screams in the most unusual positions without any "negative" effect on her vocal performance. No matter what the singing posture's rules are, I'd say they don't apply to Tatiana.
I'll jump on the bandwagon with the "Perennial" Live at Wacken and "Who is Gonna Be the One" Live requests. I think for the vocal coaches the new release, "Judgment and Punishment" Tatiana one take vocal performance is top notch.
LOL, this just never gets old i love watching new reactions to this. so 3 things I want to mention 1. The first reaction to her vocals captivates you and drags you in, and then the change startles almost every reactor, it's great 2. you are the second reactor I have watched that truly appreciates the line about Neptune and the liquid gold, it's a great line and 3. Somehow I knew that you would like and appreciate the 3 vocal style transition she does in a couple seconds before belting out the power ballad closer just before she growels "Emeralds are ripped away" fun fact: this song/video isn't meant to showcase her vocals but is actually meant to showcase the band and drummer since he was new to the band as far as I remember
This specific song is always fun for the shock factor, and Jinjer is especially fun to throw at vocal coaches. You are the first I can think of seeing that not only knows how she does this, but thoroughly enjoyed it.
I've seen a few (including this one) but not many. There's a couple of metal ones who explain it as well. Another song to look for slaughter to prevail - demolisher just for the breakdown moment. Goes from metal to full demon.
Smacked the notice as soon as it came up. Great reaction. Welcome to the Jinjer rabbit hole ! Next I recommend watching Perennial Live at Wacken or Judgement and Punishment one shot. Enjoy!
I absolutely love that you picked up on the hand gestures, "the talons" as I saw them. To me, it was an indication how fully committed she was to the song. You are truly a delight and a sincere breath of fresh air. You earned a subscriber. Those of us who feel much like you, love this performance, have much fun watching the unsuspecting fall into the Jinjer trap. I'm not a fan of the "growl" but love it in this song because it serves a purpose to advance the "story." Jinjer, like many Northern European metal bands, use it far too much for my tastes, so where I might like a song or two, their catalogue is a big much otherwise. The musicianship is superb and her range capability is sooo promising that I would love to hear a few non-growl offerings, but I'm sure their fan base would like me to shut up. Thanks for making this so much fun - you are a treasure!
Hehe Jinjer is a cool band and this is a really good song! You should check out Spiritbox - Rule of Nines, Courtney LaPlante (the vocalist) did a one take performance and its really impressive
Loved it! One of my favorite reactions to this song. Very surprised but not over the top and you adapted really well getting back to reacting and providing instruction. Also you were very open-minded to it where I've seen a lot of people be judgmental. Great job, thanks!
Tati proves to all of the "establishment" type vocal coaches and trainers that the growl is not only an art form, but it does not ruin your voice beyond repair in any way.
You probably know this already but she is using 'false folds' to produce this scream-o voice. That's how come her regular vocal cords are not affected and she can switch on a dime from one to the other. She has mastered this art through a great amount of time and practice. 🤘
Vestibular folds, aka false cords. And I am not sure she does (which goes for most regular vocal coaches), because I don't think false cord screaming has anything to do with vocal fry, which as far as I understood it so far is a compression technique of the vocal folds. From what I can get with false cord screaming, is that your throat is completely relaxed and open, to let your vestibular folds flap around.
Yeah, from what I understand fry screaming is the kind that does damage to the vocal cords and leads to some metal vocalists being unable to perform, sometimes permanently. False cord screaming is apparently a completely healthy sound to make, as long as you’re doing it right!
@@deannaelliott6272 I think fry screaming is safe too, but vocal fry isn't. The unsafe screaming happens when you force it out, which also makes use of your vocal cords, which strains them too much. There are quite a few "unsafe" raspy vocal techniques, but they are meant to be used just occasionally, not all the time or as often as screamers / growlers use their techniques.
I had to laugh when you started talking about her posture and the way she plants herself on the ground to get that support because I know you haven't seen any of their live videos yet (at least at the time of this video). When she sings live she is all over the stage, running, jumping, dancing, crawling, spinning and kicking all while still maintaining these growls, that's where her true power shows. Also I think it's important to mention that she said she doesn't use vocal fry at all, so she is probably using some type of false cord growl. As for pedals, she doesn't use effect pedals, there is no distortion on her voice. They probably added some reverb and maybe delay or something along those lines, but no distortion. There are at least two vocal tracks in places in this song, so maybe what you are hearing is a slight dissonance between the two tracks that gives it a kind of eerie, undulating sound. Tatiana is definitely a world class vocalist, very few people can do everything she can do and sound as good.
Just to point out, this isn't a “live recording”. This is the original recording off of the original record. Take a listen at the two right after the other and you'll see it's exactly the same. Not to say she couldn't pull it off live, but it definitely sounds too perfect.
@@vincentforest4074 No, this recording is different from the original, I have compared them before. To your point they are very very similar, but they are not the same. If you take the two tracks and play them simultaneously they do not quite line up. The tempos drift very slightly relative to each other, so you cannot get the whole song to be perfectly in sync. In some places Tatiana holds notes slightly longer or comes in slightly earlier. Not to mention the growls interfere with each other intermittently. This does not happen when you simply duplicate the original and shift it so it's very slightly out of sync. I'm not sure if you noticed the guitar, but in the studio version Roman uses an acoustic guitar for the bridge, whereas here he uses clean electric since obviously he can't switch guitars like that live. And of course the drums are completely different. Now obviously there is some vocal layering, so clearly not all of the vocals you hear came from this recording, so it's possible that parts of the vocals came from some of the studio layers, but definitely the bulk of it was "live".
@@FalconFlurry I wasn't talking about the instrumental, they are clearly not the same. You can tell by the amount of ghost notes the drummer is playing. But the vocals are soooo similar it's scary. Definitely a shit load of post production and vocal layering (in certain parts). Not saying it's a bad thing, but I doubt she can sound as good as this in a live gig in a less control environment.
@@vincentforest4074 Well whether or not she can sing it like this in front of an audience is kind of irrelevant to what we're talking about here -whether the vocals are just the studio track or not. If you want to see how she does it live there are plenty of recordings, many of which are published by the band or Napalm Records. She does it very differently live, switching between highs and lows and improvising, but on stage she is not trying to sound like the studio recording, she is putting on a show because that's the point of a live performance. This is a very different setting. In this she is actively trying to sound like the studio version. "Live session" doesn't mean performed in front of an audience with no post production, it means the audio (and video) were recorded from the same take -the band performed the song together and all the way through, as opposed to a studio version where each member performs their piece separately and likely in multiple sections. A live session can still have post production and extra tracks in the mix. It also doesn't have to be done on the first take. They could have attempted this 100 times before getting this take for all we know. As for her abilities to replicate the studio track this accurately, I have no reason to doubt her, she obviously knows the twists and turns of the original track far better than anyone else, she no doubt performed it hundreds of times on stage and in the studio before recording this. Just listen to the official live version of judgement and punishment and the one take performance, listen to how similar they sound when she was probably making no attempt to make them sound the same. While I agree it's scary how similar this is to the original, I don't think it's impossible for her.
Your explanation (of how she did that) was great, but your 'happy clapping' reactions were outstanding. It was sheer joy resonating from you through my screen
Finally a serious analysis. Not only stopping at the shocking effect of the performance but describing what she is "probably" doing with her voice. In a scientific way. Probably the best reaction video of this song. Thanx.

Baron of Grey Matter all the different kinds of screams come from vocal fry ... I studied with Melissa Cross. It’s the foundation of screaming. If you don’t have that incorporated in some way you’re just yelling and you’re going to get damage. She may not realize what she’s doing, didn’t she say she’s never taken lessons?

I keep seeing you in every Pisces reaction comment section hahahah
@@jodi9800 I don't usually comment, but this is one of the songs that I get excited every time I see a new reaction video pop up.

Her channel name, she explanes it aswell pretty well, if i recall correctly. Also a reaction channel i really enjoy.
When you started talking about posture, wondering if you've seen the live version of Tool's "Sober." If you haven't would be a good one to analyze.
Uhh yes!!!

Ah, 3,5 years later and reactions like this one still haven't gotten old XD
Ty Madeline for the beautiful breakdown you gave. You're a true professional
The best part of witnessing people react to this song is the reaction to the first time she switches to the growl. Never gets old and every reactor has the same response.
More Jinjer, please! This was a fun watch. 😊
Loved this reaction... now for the vocal one take of Judgement and Punishment, then maybe Perennial
Live at Wacken, and then maybe I speak Astronomy...
I'd argue Alissa's better
@@mooncalf_4534 SURE!!!!
I'm so happy you appreciate the amount of skill this takes and didn't just dismiss it you're a real one and you have a lovely voice as well
Great reaction! Your giddy enthusiasm is really contagious.
omg! the way you asked her to scare you had me crackin up. i almost fell off my seat
Been watching reactions of this song for quite some time now, and this is one of the best. Absolutely lovely.
What an awesome reaction you had! Your facial expression was priceless!
Jinjer - Perennial (LIVE WACKEN)
As a vocal coach, you now need to watch Jinjer's "Judgment and Punishment" One Take. Not only do you get this type of performance, but you get to STUDY how she does it.. Definitely worth the watch...!
Yessss
This represents the duality of a Pisces both the light and dark
And she has no professional training. She hasn’t divulged how she learned how to do it.
Perennial love and/or Teacher, Teacher.
She did say in an interview that she would scream into a pillow or out in the woods for like 6 years before doing it in front of anyone also she practiced alot of Randy Blythe from Lamb of God
And I've read from 3 different sources that if she has a warm up routine , it consists of a little whiskey and cigarettes .
Love how much you got into this!
I think that was probably the best explanation of the growling technique that I have seen ever since I first watched this video two years ago. Thank you.
She probably uses a different Technik though not really based on fry but on false cords
love watching everyone's first time reactions to this song! it's always a complete stunner when she drops that first scream and no one is ever expecting it let alone how absolutely clean she is on the vocals all around!
So she has to have a very safe way to do it, otherwise her vocals chords would have died already for sure.:-)
From skills and experience, she could easily be a massive pop star and for sure is one of or even THE most amazing vocal artist of all rock and harder genres right now.
Quality.
They recently released a live one take vocal performance of judgment and punishment. It's so good and willing to bet that you will love it.
Gotta love how into it she gets, and how great her personality is, also the fact that she knows what she’s talking about makes it oh so much better
Loved the reaction! While I will agree with my fellow commenters that Perennial live at Wacken would be a great second reaction, I think that from a vocal trainer standpoint Judgement and Punishment Tatiana one take video might even be better.
I agree. Vocal coaches seem to love being able to see her throat and chest and how she works it! Its fantastic!!!
Great reaction! Learned alot coach.
Another wonderful female vocalist to check out is Courtney Laplante of Spiritbox. Beautiful clean singing and some of the best female screams out there next to Jinjer.
Spiritbox - The Mara Effect 1-3 live in studio
You have just scratched the surface of Jinjer please do more reactions to them you won’t be disappointed!!!!
tbh its probably intentional to avoid copyright
@@scottmcdonough4030 No, the first time she paused the video there was a delay between where she paused it and where she edited the pause of the video in.
@Scott McDonough I don't think that's the case; but even if it is, there would be better ways. You can easily avoid YT copyrights by inserting long enough pauses, which she already does anyway to comment on the video, vocal techniques, etc. :)
Headphones / earbuds are an easy solution
It is coming through her speakers as well. The echo makes it sounds like she's in a bathroom recording this. And the delay is getting worse between the video and her audio towards the end.
Its cool that despite this not being her kind of music, she appreciates and acknowledges Jinjers skill above all things, excellent reaction.
Tatiana's middle name should be "breath control master". Perennial live at Wacken is one of the most impressive examples of that. It's amazing how someone who is basically self-taught managed to control it so well. : )
Don't be fooled by her posture, it doesn't mean she does what you said she did to get a certain vocal "effect" or to be able to produce certain sounds. Again, referring back to Perennial: she sings and screams in the most unusual positions without any "negative" effect on her vocal performance. No matter what the singing posture's rules are, I'd say they don't apply to Tatiana.
Not to mention she sings and growls while being completely winded without it affecting her voice
I love the way you accept Tatiana. Some can't deal with her awesomeness.
I'll jump on the bandwagon with the "Perennial" Live at Wacken and "Who is Gonna Be the One" Live requests. I think for the vocal coaches the new release, "Judgment and Punishment" Tatiana one take vocal performance is top notch.
Knowing the MECHANICS of something someone does so naturally is IMPRESSIVE! Cheers Madeline. Amazing analysis.
When she said it was “very pieces like. dreamy and edgy. “ I was like the second face is coming
LOL, this just never gets old i love watching new reactions to this.
so 3 things I want to mention 1. The first reaction to her vocals captivates you and drags you in, and then the change startles almost every reactor, it's great
2. you are the second reactor I have watched that truly appreciates the line about Neptune and the liquid gold, it's a great line and 3. Somehow I knew that you would like and appreciate the 3 vocal style transition she does in a couple seconds before belting out the power ballad closer just before she growels
"Emeralds are ripped away"
fun fact: this song/video isn't meant to showcase her vocals but is actually meant to showcase the band and drummer since he was new to the band as far as I remember
"I think I peed my pants a little bit..." I believe that is the right reaction to Jinjer if the first time you hear her is when singing Pisces!
Enjoy!
Lol. Thanks. I have big hands and big fingers, thus I sometimes hit auto suggestions and not realize it.
"It's beautiful like an exorcism and I just really enjoy being scared by her" ~ Welcome to the club :)
This never gets old. I really like your breakdowns. So many "reactors" aren't digging into the nuance. Cheers.
Hehe Jinjer is a cool band and this is a really good song! You should check out Spiritbox - Rule of Nines, Courtney LaPlante (the vocalist) did a one take performance and its really impressive
Tatiana is my queen, but I wholeheartedly second this request. :) Great song and fun one-take video.
Loved it! One of my favorite reactions to this song. Very surprised but not over the top and you adapted really well getting back to reacting and providing instruction. Also you were very open-minded to it where I've seen a lot of people be judgmental. Great job, thanks!
You should try “Spiritbox - Rule of Nines”
YESSSS
Love this reaction! You can tell you are being very honest in your appreciation for what she is capable of. I had fun watching this
Tati proves to all of the "establishment" type vocal coaches and trainers that the growl is not only an art form, but it does not ruin your voice beyond repair in any way.
Love seeing professional singers leave their comfort zones and be open for different styles and techniques.
The moment med Tatiana makes women question their own sexuality.
All the time signature changes are seamlessly groovy... 7/4...6/8...4/4... And some of the riffs were very Opeth-y, too! 🤘
Mad... You are so fun to watch. It's so awesome to learn something new from someone who loves what they do.
Judgement and Punishment - one take vocal - And she sings reggae
Finally a serious analysis. Not only stopping at the shocking effect of the performance but describing what she is "probably" doing with her voice. In a scientific way. Probably the best reaction video of this song. Thanx.
Great video, but there's a lot of echo. I only noticed it after your virst analysis around 6:20, but it's very obvious when you hear the drums :)
Noticed that immediately. Tati sounds like she's in a 6x6 concrete room.
