@chief wiggums on my 2nd play through, pisses me off it deleted my cards when I started NG+, seems completely asinine. keep everything BUT Gwent cards???
@chief wiggums My OCD made the first part of the game unbearably hard just because I was buying cards I didn't have instead op maintaining and upgrading my gear. I ended up starting a playthrough on my PC when the game came on sale later on and ignored Gwent entirely out of bitterness towards it. It was like playing on easy-mode. I got done Wite Orchard in about 1/3 the playtime.
A few pointers to note: 1. Spy is op, do whatever you can to use your spy cards. When your opponents uses spy, decoy it. When you have a medic and your opponent uses a spy card, save your medic for the spy revive next round. When you know you will lose the round, spam all the spy cards and boost their points, since you are not going to win anyway. When you have weather cards and spy cards, (ie close combat spy + biting frost) use your spy cards and hold the weather card till the very end - when they pass, use your weather card to surprise them. When your opponent has passed and you have way more points than your opponent, if you have spy cards use them as well. 2. In Gwent, every move is important and legitimate. If you are going to lose that round, try to, as much as possible, waste your opponents cards (ie maybe use your leader card or decoy card to help you skip one turn but has minimal effect on your points). Stronger opponents however knows how to avoid your trap. 3. Each faction has their strengths and weaknesses. For example, monster faction is known for spamming same type cards. Thats op as hell but weather cards counter it. Dealing with nifgaardian faction is not as straightforward. You need to outwit them with more cards using medics and spy cards. Generally they have more special cards that are invulnerable to weather cards so you have to use raw power to deal with it (ie having more cards). 4. At critical stages of the game, you have to make assumptions in what card your opponents has. Depending on his faction, you can more or less guess the playstyle (through experience). In addition, there are often signs that your opponents has ran out of cards - using a random cards that does not provide optimal effect. Let's look at a scenario: You are in the second round of the game. Your opponent has won the first round. He has 2-3 cards left and he passes (ie let's you win) this means that at least 1 card is a non power card (weather card, decoy..). By keeping some strong power cards for the last round, you are likely to win the fight. Or if he uses a useless card on you, likely he has ran out of options and is waiting for you to waste your cards (see above point 2) There are a lot of tiny details in Gwent, such as the number of weather cards, the proportion of ranged, combat and siege cards and such. They can all affect how "lucky" your cards are, and keep your deck minimal and strong - so you have higher chances of getting good cards. And redraw, make full use of it, plan how you want to attack your opponent. If you have a torrential rain and many siege cards, redraw your torrential rain. Its unlikely that your opponent has more siege power than you. Like wise if your leader can already summon a weather card, no point keeping the same weather card in your deck, unless you know your opponent is prone to use a certain type for attacking. This comment is insanely long, but I hope it helps anyone trying to defeat the stronger opponents. Have fun

Tip for beginners: at 9:15 it would’ve been worth it for him to play the spy before passing and forfeiting the round. Doing so would lure another card from the opponent. Moreover, the 5 points wouldn’t hurt u in the next round. The only caveat to this is if the opponent uses a decoy to steal your spy in response, but that is not super likely

The muster cards are not worth a shit tbh. Yeah they get insane much points, but often uses all your cards in the process unless you were lucky to only have one of the cards in your hand. I say the best cards in the game are Spy cards, decoy cards, medic cards, Villentrenmech and some high power hero cards. My opinion on the best decks. Northern=Nilfgaard>Skellige>Scoia'tael>Monster
Gwent in witcher 3 is easy to learn and easy to master. Just stick to spam spies, decoys and medics (revive spies) and you'll be fine against 95% of the gwent players in the game.
Thanks for this video, I downloaded Witcher 3 GOTY last night with all DLCs after playing the original game back on console when it first came out, I never really played Gwent then but looking to get properly stuck into the game this time around and this video will certainly help me with Gwent. Thanks again!
Dude, if you are going to forfeit a round, PLAY THE SPY CARD. You get two cards and you aren't going to give him points the next round. If you are going to lose a round, it doesn't matter if he beats you by 1 or 100. So give him the spy card so you can use the two cards in the next round without giving him points to close a round. There is sometimes I play 3 spy cards and don't put any value cards on the board and lose the round. But I usually kick ass the next two rounds.
Even the AI will do this. Try passing the first round against an opponent playing Nilfgaard and you will likely find yourself slammed with so many spies that it forces you to win the round. The AI is more than happy to give you a round in exchange for a heap of cards to hammer you in the next two rounds.
Ye. He wasn't that good at playing strategically. He could probably have won one or two rounds more. But hey I played a lot of magic back in the days and it's just a how to video :)
I have a 100+ hours into game, this being my 2nd play through. I have never understood the game of Gwent i have always lost evey match. But Dude, let me tell you this video helped me out a ton. Thank you good, Sir.
The best thing you can do is to keep the number of card high, that way you always have an advantage. So is better to use the spy cards in the first round. You might lose that round but you'll have the advantage the nex round.
I've returned to Witcher 3, after a year+ hiatus, after having not gotten to play it much, due to life, the first time around, and now that I'm making the time, I want to do it right. I skipped playing Gwent, but figuring I'd been missing something, I figured I'd check it out. After watching several vids, I found THIS one to be the most useful. Really, really good job, Rob! Thanks so much.
Was struggling with understanding this game, after losing over and over and watching tons of videos this is the only one so far that finally helps me understand This game!!! Great explanation much appreciated :)
Thank you for this, I'm on the last mission of the game and avoided gwent until now haha but I don't wanna beat the witcher without doing all quests, and I haven't done any gwent quest so now it's time for that.

thank you, I dont usually love card games in real life in fact I despise them and fidn them boring, I played whole Witcher 3 game and dlc's with avoiding and ignoring gwent, now I'm playing NG+ and actually getting interested in it, and you guide really made it more clear!!
This game actually shows how much you can think 2 or 3 steps ahead of the opponent...On my first playthrough, i dont even care about Gwent because I want to learn the storyline as fast as i can...on my second playthrough, I went to every single undiscovered locations and then stack up my cards, buys them whenever the shopkeepers have any cards... Once i start winning, I went to every town with shopkeepers to challenge them and they in return, give me cards...This game is super fun...like a card game of chess
This helped me a lot. I didn't understand the game at first and was avoiding gwent for the past 50+ hours... I decided to try again after this video and now I'm addicted and playing against everyone, lol.
After careful consideration and borderline raging because of losing every single goddamn fucking round I've ever played with this stupid card game, I've decided fuck gwent. I just can't win in this game, guess I'm just meant to suck ass with this bullshit no matter what, so whatever. Maybe I'll have better luck taking up monster contracts for coin and possibly rescuing an ashen haired girl from wraiths further down the road.
lil Flaco ese lol Nope I really can't. I made those comments when I was on an all time losing streak and was seriously gonna flip out. Had to vent some how without busting my controller. haha
+OTBASH The only time I tried playing gwent was against the baron with my basic ass deck. I got raped because I didnt do the tutorial so I clicked random shit. XD
I agree, in my first playthrough I lost all the time and just ignored the game completely. That changed in NG+, I mastered the basics and learned the strengths and weaknesses of each. I got all the hero/neutral cards for all the decks, I'm just missing a few unit cards and the Kayran for the monster deck. The one card that I totally missed was the Dandelion card. I play more Gwent than the actual game.
9:22 When you decide to pass on a round while the enemy is ahead: PLAY ALL YOUR SPIES first. It allows you to exchange one spy for two fresh cards without giving him any points in other rounds you might win in.
Thanks man for making this video I’ve been playing this card game knowing nothing about it for a long time now I can finally go back and do it the right way
I fucking hate this game. I've played it 6 times and never got anything higher than a 6 value card. Yet 5 out of the 6 games my opponent has always had at least one 10 value card. How could I possibly win against this it's a shit game.
lucasfunkt No problem :) i suck at the game so far too.. Haven't bought any myself yet. But i've seen plenty for sale. Just try different merchants :) I'm not sure about blacksmiths and alchemists.. But several merchants are selling a couple of cards :)
Bad plays ...Realy? You pass even though you have a spy in your hand? Aparently you did not eve nunderstand basic strategy yet were arrogant enough to think you could give advice.
I played the game twice with finishing EVERYTHING in the main game and the dlcs (even all the undiscovered locations) but the only thing I didn't do was gwent related stuff, game explained it badly and I was just not having it, this tutorial helped a lot so hopefully I can have a perfect gameplay done when I play it for the third time, thanks!
My God, I played the whole game the first time without playing gwent at all because I couldn't figure it out. Now that I'm replaying I was desperate, and I finally have at least a basic understanding after watching this. Thanks so much!
Man im currently on my 3rd playthrough and i REALLY wanna be good at Gwent this time... but its confusing when u never actually taken the time to learn 😭😭
Man this is awesome. I've been playing The Witcher 3 for some time (level 35 and 80 hours played :P) and I never really learned how to play. Got to a point on the game that all my secondary missions are about Gwent, including the tournament, and this helped a lot! Thank you so much for the explanation! Best regards from Brazil!
i used to know how to play this game but i hadnt played witcher 3 in 2 years and i just got back into it but i completely forgot how to play gwent, so i've tried to avoid every npc who I can play gwent with. now i'm confident i can get back into it
I used to have a very difficult time with gwent so bad that I just avoided it completely the 1st time I played but after a few games it's literally one of the simplest card games ever
Thank you SO much for making this. I'm over 40 hours into this game and I'm still completely lost how to play the damn Gwent cards. I've played one or two games but I lost miserably. This helped a good bit. Still a little lost but I know more!!

The only way this would work is if your opponent places a spy on your side
A few pointers to note: 1. Spy is op, do whatever you can to use your spy cards. When your opponents uses spy, decoy it. When you have a medic and your opponent uses a spy card, save your medic for the spy revive next round.

Let's look at a scenario:
You are in the second round of the game. Your opponent has won the first round. He has 2-3 cards left and he passes (ie let's you win) this means that at least 1 card is a non power card (weather card, decoy..). By keeping some strong power cards for the last round, you are likely to win the fight. Or if he uses a useless card on you, likely he has ran out of options and is waiting for you to waste your cards (see above point 2)
There are a lot of tiny details in Gwent, such as the number of weather cards, the proportion of ranged, combat and siege cards and such.

Note: Cards 1,2,4,5,6 are Hero cards
Honorable Mentions: All 10 power Hero Cards, All Leader Cards, Decoys, Milva, Commander's Horn, Scorch cards, Weather cards, Catapults, Dandelion
(Nilfgaard spies suck compared to Northern Realms spies and the Scoia'tael deck in general is weak)
PS: The best card that deserves the 0 position is Poor Fucking Infantry
great dude!
Gwent is easy to understand. But hard to master.
EXACTLY
Like sex?
Like chess
Gwent in witcher 3 is easy to learn and easy to master. Just stick to spam spies, decoys and medics (revive spies) and you'll be fine against 95% of the gwent players in the game.
The Gwent is like a Nürburgring, it's easy to learn by driving a slow car, but hard to master by driving GT3 race car
DonJuansDaddy That' exactly what I thought when I watched the video...
The guy who posted this vid played dumb as fuck, this is more of a how to suck at gwent guide lol
Untill he uses medics and revive all the spy cards you used against him...
Bad strategy
Thanks for explaining it so well! Could not follow the games instructions for the life of me!!
I looked for this video after watching Netflix The Witcher Series and play the game.
2019 The Witcher 3 player
Yeah same
Was struggling with understanding this game, after losing over and over and watching tons of videos this is the only one so far that finally helps me understand This game!!! Great explanation much appreciated :)
Thank you for this, I'm on the last mission of the game and avoided gwent until now haha but I don't wanna beat the witcher without doing all quests, and I haven't done any gwent quest so now it's time for that.
you are beautiful Juliana.
@@jimmymerc5212 omg... just don't
@@aaanders it was 2 years ago. Im mature now. Sorry hahaha
Sorry Juliana.
@@jimmymerc5212 hallo again, mr. Merc. I am thrilled to hear that you are feeling better. Seeing you grow from just young boy, to the proud and fine man you are today, warms my heart.
Yours truly
Stranger on the internet
Yours is the most precise video ive ever watched !! Exactly to the point.... No wasting time with useless info.. yet not leaving the viewers unsatisfied with a lotta doubts !!
Thanks a lot!
Thanks for this mate, didn't get the game until I watched this.
Finally someone who gets to the point and explains things quickly and are easily comprehensible, you earned yourself a sub and some shares my friend.
You SHALL NOT PASS!
Gwent was little bit difficult for Gandalf at first, yesyes
if ur gonna forfeit a round, at least play the spy card
The best guide I've found on TH-cam so far. I finally understood all the rules even though my english skills are not that good. Thank you mate and salute from Russia.
MILF Guardians? How do I join them Kappa
interesting, seems simple to learn. Might try it.

"It is natural and beautiful that a man should love his sister."
Wow! Watched so may "expert" videos on gwent but this video's simplicity is what explains this game so easily and thoroughly
I hated gwent at first now I love it
and now? :)
i have a love and hate relation with Gwent
You should've used your spy in round 1, you were going to forfeit the match anyway so it doesn't matter that they will get stronger
I still barely understand it, my skill in calculation and strategy has always been off, but this does clear like 4% of the confusion.
thank you, I dont usually love card games in real life in fact I despise them and fidn them boring, I played whole Witcher 3 game and dlc's with avoiding and ignoring gwent, now I'm playing NG+ and actually getting interested in it, and you guide really made it more clear!!
there is no reason to pass a round without dropping every spy of the deck. :)
This the first video that explained in a way that made sense immediately. Thanks for posting.
Geralt: I summon my archer in attack mode and I'll end my turn
Gwent and Texas Holdem (Red Dead Redemption) are my favourite videogame minigames
i still have alot of trouble, my opponents always place multiple cards at a time when i can oly place 1 and absolutely destroy me instantly
That's the monster decks. Use weather cards for direct counter + spies and decoys to wear his cards out.
I appreciate the format of this. Thank you for actually jumping right into the game and talking about it as you go.
This game is far from fun. Chess is much better and interesting board game.
This helped me a lot. I didn't understand the game at first and was avoiding gwent for the past 50+ hours... I decided to try again after this video and now I'm addicted and playing against everyone, lol.
I wish Gwent wasn't in the game at all. I want to get 100% achievements but i just don't want to bother with this stupid shit
Hahaha 🧙♂️🧹🤙🏻😊😊
I've basicly been playing blind lol i did not understand but you helped me thanks man your the best
LMFAO I saw your comment fucking hating on gwent on angry joe's witcher video. XD You just can't seem to get the hang of this card game.
lil Flaco ese
lol Nope I really can't.
+OTBASH go to your settings and lower the difficulty
9:22 When you decide to pass on a round while the enemy is ahead: PLAY ALL YOUR SPIES first. It allows you to exchange one spy for two fresh cards without giving him any points in other rounds you might win in.
9:37 If you had played the spy at the end of the last round instead, you would have had the two extra cards without handing him 5 points.
10:35 Probably should have used medic to pull back the one point spy....cringe....
how to play gwent: winGwint(1)
A man of culture like myself.
Thanks for this. Just got to Toussant in my NG+ and realized, maybe I should learn how to play finally so I have more to do. Great help.
I swear the npcs have an unlimited amount of cards.
Thanks man for making this video I’ve been playing this card game knowing nothing about it for a long time now I can finally go back and do it the right way
How to play gwent: don’t
This is literally a game inside a huge game. I have never played a game and felt this much effort was put into it.
I fucking hate this game. I've played it 6 times and never got anything higher than a 6 value card. Yet 5 out of the 6 games my opponent has always had at least one 10 value card. How could I possibly win against this it's a shit game.
lucasfunkt You have to buy more cards then and place them in your deck.
Kenneth Jensen Thanks for trying to help, where do you buy cards from?
lucasfunkt No problem :) i suck at the game so far too.. Haven't bought any myself yet. But i've seen plenty for sale. Just try different merchants :) I'm not sure about blacksmiths and alchemists.. But several merchants are selling a couple of cards :)
Kenneth Jensen Thanks I'll keep looking
It's not a shit game just because you blow at it. You probably just started off trying to play higher level players.
Thank you! I have been struggling to understand but I think your explanation has definitely helped!!!!
Im level 28 and never played a game of gwent
That gives me hope. I played one game and lost miserably. I'm having too much fun elsewhere.
Young Windex same
Peasent in le veo 83 And never played gwent
Great tutorial thanks, I’m about to play the Baron
My baron hang him self, hmmm
Is this a downloaded dlc because there is a dlc for this card game so what’s that all about?
I think that the dlc just adds more cards
Thanks for the video! Simple and easy to understand! All the other gwent videos are like 20+ minutes long and aren't helpful. This was perfect
This is my fovorite thing in fortnite
I remember looking up this back when I first started playing. Now I beat all the gwent tournaments, and got all the cards in game.
Bad plays ...Realy? You pass even though you have a spy in your hand?
Aparently you did not eve nunderstand basic strategy yet were arrogant enough to think you could give advice.
At least he gave me an idea about how to play gwent, that's worth
I understood the game better thanks to this. Fuck you.
Best regards from Brazil!
just another thumbs up, very good explanation. i was so aggravated at some small details i missed and you hit exactly!!
A simple demonstration of how this game works. Excellent video!
i used to know how to play this game but i hadnt played witcher 3 in 2 years and i just got back into it but i completely forgot how to play gwent, so i've tried to avoid every npc who I can play gwent with. now i'm confident i can get back into it
Thanks very eaasy guide watched couple more videos before and was overwhelmed by the explainations.
Yours is straightforward and easy to understand.
A very clear explanation of the Gwent game and good sound of voice, thank you very much!
very explanatory! got me wised up for Gwent, never tried it or liked it. Now i'll try it out for sure, great help mate!
finally helped me. None other videos helped
First clear explanation of the game from square one! Excellent!!!
I remember that I learned how to play gwent in the Witcher 3 by checking out this video. Thanks for the upload.
Literally the only "how to play Gwent" video on TH-cam that actually explains how to play Gwent 😄
I used to have a very difficult time with gwent so bad that I just avoided it completely the 1st time I played but after a few games it's literally one of the simplest card games ever
Thanks man I used to hate this mini game at first, now it add to the over all experince of the wither 3 wild hunt + leveling up so awesome:)
Thank you SO much for making this. I'm over 40 hours into this game and I'm still completely lost how to play the damn Gwent cards. I've played one or two games but I lost miserably. This helped a good bit. Still a little lost but I know more!!
