  • In 2020, SpaceX secretly bought two oil rigs with the intent to convert them into offshore rocket launch platforms. This video looks at why Starship will need these platforms and how SpaceX will convert these old rigs into rocket launching platforms.

      2 oilrigs for only 7 million usd too, normally 1 would cost upwards of 515,000,000 and if he bought 2 brand new it would have costed him 1.3 billion usd. To get such a good deal takes shrewdness to levels ive never dared dream of.

    • @SahilP2648
      @SahilP2648 3 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      @@chloekaftan there's too much we don't know about that deal. They could have sold him just the hull or the platform of the rig without any equipment cause those drills and pretty much everything can be stripped off it. Then that price makes sense. Not to mention spacex will need to install all of their custom equipment on it which will again cost at least 10 milion USD each, don't know how high it can go. And lastly you are gravely mistaken if Elon himself negotiated all this. He takes all the design decisions regarding the company as a whole and individual tasks are designated to the employees... like any other company. What he does do is create plans for the company as a whole like creating BFR's designs and the overall concept of travel starting from the engine to refuelling to logistics. And obviously like any other CEO he executes and regulates everything.

    Rigs have tanks called "reserve pits" located below the sea level - that's the most likely location of the fuel and LOX tanks, since it also keeps everything much safer from a catastrophic failure above deck. Also, they'll be keeping the diesel generators, as the rig uses its thrusters to maintain its position (a system called "dynamic positioning"), and there's no way to provide that much power for so long using batteries or solar or whatever - also, it's more reliable and cost-effective is a variety of ways.

    Multiple problems, while they may switch out the diesel generators, it would most likely be for methane powered turbines if they do, but diesel generators are pretty rigid. LOX will most likely be done on land as the amount of oxygen and power needed will use allot of space to create enough for a large cadence. Also, a LNG tanker has enough LNG for at least 8 launches, so it is very likely one rig will be used for bulk storage and the other for launching.

    • @Benkenobi8118
      @Benkenobi8118 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah. I don't see why Elon wouldn't power it with methane if he's already needing to fuel starship. His methane plant in Boca Chica is going to be interesting for sure.

    • @matildastanford7019
      @matildastanford7019 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Why not simply use the tankers to store and transfer to the launch pad rig? When empty run back to a depot dock to refill.
      That way there can be three or four tanker ships (each for LOX & L CH4) in a rotation pattern to enable almost continual lauches. Also they can be independently driven away from the launch pad as to minimise accidents and bad weather.

    • @joe_mckirdy
      @joe_mckirdy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@matildastanford7019 I'm pretty sure that no LNG ship captain would be willing to sit next to a rig launching rockets. If the rocket blew up, the ship could low up. So docking over and over and over again becomes mundane. Keeping extra LNG onboard could cause excessive dmg from a larger explosion. I envision a bulk storage on one rig feeding multiple launch rigs with pipelines. In this manner, it would decrease the number of dockings, reduce the amount of potential damage.

    Using a separate tanker as a fuel farm seems more sensible if launches are frequent. Not only would it mean that the launch rig would be less prone to rapid unscheduled disassembly in the inevitable event of a failure, but there would be less risk from explosion while pumping from the tanker to the on-board storage. During launch and landing, the tanker can also serve to evacuate personnel from the danger zone.

    • @PeterLawton
