The supply vessel was from the Edison Chouest fleet.
They call Chouest the Cajun Navy.
Biggest company you’ve never heard of.
9 shipyards, 400+ vessels worldwide, family owned and operated.
I worked for Chouest for 14 years.
Not sure which vessel that was but it was one of the newer ones.
    Nice vessels.
The Dynamic Positioning System is incredible, about 7 computers coordinate the vessels thrusters and main propulsion systems and the vessel will sit in one spot like its sitting on a rock, kinda amazing if you consider the wind is pushing the vessel one direction the waves and current in another.
The captain and crew monitor the system only correcting it if needed, which is rarely.

Man I would really really love to work on one of those things. Unfortunately I'm not particularly skilled - I operate various machines for custom office furbiture manufacturing: there's maybe some technical skills I've developed in maintaining and repairing those machines, but its a different league entirely from what these guys on oil rigs are doing.
But what I'm wondering - how does one get their foot in the door in a place like this? I'd be willing to sweep the floors for barely above minimum wage if thats what it takes, but I would just love love love to do anything related to working on one of these rigs. Anybody with any experience have any tips? Would getting certified with various forklifts be helpful?

I forgot to mention that forklift certification won’t help you, companies that have work going on out there are among the safest, wasn’t always the case though. They will train you their way.

Step one is a safety course thats mandatory for work oil rigs. Then you gneerally need to show you have some skills or trades thatbmakes sense. A steward (helping in the galley, cleaning accomodations/cabins) is generally not needed for any skills. But you cant really grow in ranks.
Better to start working on deck, and eventually maybe get a offshore crane certificate. But to work on deck you would need some more certification.

Hey Richard next time while you are out on the deck unloading the provisions make sure you wear your safety glasses on. I have been working on offshore rigs wonder why the HSE didn't give you a warning 😝
