    Took my 04 Territory in for a service, they looked at the ball joints and the ball joints were replaced under warranty (although the car is out of warranty). Could not be happier with Ford fix about this and didnt cost anything. PS I have had my Territory for 5 years, LOVE IT and going to buy another one next month.

    They need to recall the ford Mondeo too cause of the gearbox issues cost me 6000 dollars later for a second hand gearbox cause of a small plastic part in the gear box did my own investigation found out it's very common and happened to many others too

    My Dad's territory lost its wheel on a low speed tight turn, ran into a guard rail with a few thousand dollar bill.
    Having said that I did tell him to get the knocking side checked out.
    It had about 60k on it at the time.
    I can't remember whether Ford replaced the ball joint or not, it was still under warranty from memory, but obviously there was the damage from the guardrail which cos the insurance premium.

    I am one of the owners of a Territory that asked TT to run the story. There are thousands of us in complaint with Ford over the damages done to our vehicles. Just because you like the brand doesn't give them right to treat their customers safety with such disrespect.
    Thank you Vassil for helping Ford Territory owners to be heard.
    Potaka - you are more than welcome to visit us at car buddy to see how many other complaints their are!!!

    Good for you - you owned 2 Ford Territory's that didn't have ball joint issues (the 2010 plates were never in question anyway) - give yourself a pat on the back.
    You are very, very nieve and are most welcome to argue the point by yourself. There are thousands of people who have been affected - it is not a minor issue.

    Had this happen to me. Driver's side ball joint popped out without warning and landed on the inside of the rim. i was only going 20kph at the time, so I pulled over easily and parked off the road. I found out what happened and bought a replacement, fitted it onto the car on the road and replaced the second one later. It was only two bolts and the ball joint to take off and replace, so it was relatively easy to do.
    There's only one real cure: to replace the front suspension with that of the 2009 SYII Territory, comprising of the hub and the lower control arms; everything else is compatible across the models. They altered the ball joints to be in compression rather than Tension on the new model, and they are compatible with the mounts on the older models. After that is done, even if the ball joints fail, they don't pop apart like the early ones do. I did it myself for $800AUD and haven't had problems with the suspension since.

      Problem is, territors are good cars but they are long in the tooth, shitty used car salesman sell them without a proper road worthy, people on a budget buy them and have a time bomb unless they get under the car and check it properly, dont trust sleasy used car salesman to have roadworthy done, part of roadworthy obviously is checking ball joints. If it wasn't for ball joints, bushes, mounts, and power steering the territors could have last forever like the toyota cruisers

      @@michaellast1385 I got a Territory, replacing the BA Fairmont sedan I had, because my cousin (I'm his carer) can't get up out of a lower car. With the Territory, he can easily slide in and out of the front seat without having to drop down into it or have me help pull him out of it. i used to own a 2004 Jeep Cherokee (lovely little vehicle, never had to do anything to it apart from servicing during the two years I had it), but it got taken out by a drunk driver just after I'd paid it off. The Fairmont was ex-fleet, found it sitting in a row of silver Falcons, looking like one of them. But when my cousin's legs started acting up, I traded it in on the SX Ghia, and it was almost like I hadn't swapped. The Ghia was better appointed than the Fairmont!
      Anyway, my own mechanic (Western Suburbs Automatics out at Rocklea, Brisbane) inspected all three cars and there were only niggling little faults with my Territory. Another one that I had them inspect first (an SR), they'd found wiring problems, so I went with the Ghia instead. First thing I did when I got it was replace all the brake pads and the two front rotors (needed), and the only major work beside the ball joints was recently replacing the transfer case after it stopped transferring drive to the front wheels (a sometime-problem with the SX models). After reaching over 298,000 km, I'm happy with her.

      @@cassandrafoxx4171 I actually love the territorys, I even like the look of the sy1 the best. Other then needing to regularly check suspension (which people should do anyway) and replacing bushes the territors are pretty bullet proof and will last forever if you look after em. Mine is 13 years old, 270 thousand on her, and the way its going it will do another 270 thousand easy

    @Mumsplaymoney i myself own a new 2010 ghia... not a problem..i have owned a 2005 territory ghia....no problem. when the problem was announced i went to the local dealer. the next day the car was booked in & fixed... no problems here. if you had done the same thing like countless others your problem would have been fixed. instead you want a whole new front end or a car. this is not just a ford problem it happens to other makes & models its just some want more the others....

    It looks like the pull apart design flaw is still there with this replacement from the recent recall R1101.
    I think the aim was for the joint to be stronger to resist pulling apart. But the underlying design flaw is not resolved. I guess they're still not willing to change the complete assembly to the new design, probably to save money.
    Have a look at this article, which will explain the flaw.

    the ford territory is a piece of shit I own a 2008 model and the suspension is knocking it's arse off, took it the dealer today and they told me just over $4,000 to fix it. every damn bushing has crapped out and needs replacing and thanks to the destroyed suspension it has ruined all four tyres. when I asked the ford dealer for an explanation he told me that it happens to all cars and it depended on what type of roads it was driven on.

    My 2004 Territory front left ball joint failed without warning @ 90,000 kms - luckily I was driving slowly in a carpark when it happened - Ford dealer replaced both lower arms and front brakes hoses at no cost under the recall thingo. Also had the right rear brake hose blow twice but that was not covered... Apart from the suspension, switches, door locks, brakes and engine it's a good car lol :D

  • @michaellast1385
    @michaellast1385 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This doesn't make sense. Ok the ball joint fails, but then wouldn't the radius arm need to break off as well? Pretty sure if the lower control arm ball went you would notice serious problems with turning and noise before the radius arm broke off as well causing the wheel to go on an angle?

    • @michaellast1385
      @michaellast1385 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @making the move by darren $5800? You can buy 2 control arms with the ball joints and bushers already in em for $90 on ebay. Buy them and just jack ya car up, put in on jack stands, remove the wheel and off you go easy fix.

    • @michaellast1385
      @michaellast1385 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @making the move by darren Na they wont come out on the territorys. Trust me I have replaced control arms on these cars. No need to clamp the springs or anything. Just jack the car, remove the bolt from the ball joint, remove the bolt from the strut and remove the bolt that holds the control arm to the chassis. If you have trouble getting the ball joint to come out heat the socket it fits into with a heat gun (BE CAREFULL NOT TO MELT BRAKE LINES) and hit the socket on the side near the ball joint with a hammer. A spare jack to manipulate the control arm will be handy. Good luck

      @@michaellast1385 I don't know if the E-bay parts are new, but I bought mine from Burson Auto Parts for $230 each side. The biggest problem with the control arms are the ball joints are integral with the control arms, so you can't replace just the ball joints. I replaced the broken one the next day by the side of the road and just drove mine home. The other side I replaced on the week-end. My 2004 SX Ghia now has the suspension parts from a 2010 SYII Ghia fitted in place, and that should be it for popping ball joints.

    • @michaellast1385
      @michaellast1385 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cassandrafoxx4171 You can just replace the ball joints with a press tool. I have done it multiple times. But for the average home user it is easier just to replace the entire arm with the bushes and ball joints already supplied. Main issue is with 2004/2005 terrys but I have seen em go in 2007, and my own 2008. I have had my wheel bust out in a 2008 terry and damaged the door mould. I had to replace back and front bumper to coulor match, and all 4 door mouldings. Problem with ebay is, what are you getting, older stock, cheaper stock.. a lot of ford is chinese anyway, so its hard to know if you have chinese crap or genuine ford made in china

    • @cassandrafoxx4171
      @cassandrafoxx4171 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaellast1385 Yeah, I was very lucky that I was going so slowly when mine dropped. The only damage was that the control arm lathed a ring of damage from the inside of my rim. After the spall (the little piece of scraped aluminium) was removed and smoothed, I'd thought I'd have to get the rim re-balanced, but the lathing was so consistent, the rim was in better balance than before it was damaged! They had to take off 40g of weight. But after seeing another video of a Territory drop an arm and flipping the car right over, yeah, I was VERY lucky that day!

  • @larsulrich63

    this is all well and good but no way would there have been no prior indication ie; clunking going over bumps), before the wheels fell off. some element of personal responsibility must be had

    • @JossRickard
      @JossRickard 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's entirely unacceptable for the suspension to entirely collapse. Expecting a mother with kids on board to notice a slight knock before the wheel comes off is unreasonable. As someone who's replaced dozens of them, you use a special measuring tool to check the amount of play in the ball joint to determine whether it requires replacement under warranty (They now have lifetime warranty, finally). The amount of play that they're replaced at, you'd never hear them knocking or pick it with a traditional lever bar test on a hoist. The problem is with the design itself; the ball joint on the lower arm is pulled -upwards-, out of the arm, meaning there's no traditional knocking noise like normally installed ball joints, where they will knock over bumps because they're pressing -downwards-.
