  • How To Take Care Of A Rainbow Lorikeet.
When caring for Lories its best to feed them a diet of green vegetables like lettuce or celery sticks. Also fresh water is essential for their health and must be given to them abundantly, especially if you intend on feeding your lorikeet a dry diet. Lories need to dip their tongue in water after consuming any kind of dry nectar.
Compared to other talking parrots, Lorikeets are fairly quiet and tend not to talk very much. They have a lifespan of about 10 to 20 years. Rainbow Lorikeets are around 30cm long, and have the ability to be excellent talkers if properly motivated.
The Rainbow Lorikeet's tongue is like a bristle brush. Unlike many other parrots, it doesn't eat seeds. In fact, seeds are actually bad for lories. These beautifully colored birds use their bristle brush tongue to extract sweet sticky nectar and pollen from deep within native flowers.

Your lori is so sweet! I hope mine will be able to go outside with me too..! I would like to have some info on understanding the behaviour of a lorikeet, that is truly so energetic compared to other parrots and can be misunderstood. For example, here is a topic I really worry about: we know lorikeets need a ton of toys to entertain themselves, but does my lorikeet appreciate their presence in the cage? Sometimes he seems bothered by having all those things around. He screams to them, he attacks them, he puffs out the feathers and makes a fan with his tail like he is making war to them. Sometimes he is quiet in his cage and suddenly starts attacking some toy. I tried to remove some and he attacked me too... How you discern a lori happy of playing or hyper excitated or fighting?

Lorikeets are definitely very feisty. The wild lorikeets which visit me each day will chase away and beat up the sulphur crested cockatoos which also come by. For reference, sulphur crested cockatoos can weigh around 10 times heavier than rainbow lorikeets, so these feisty little Lori's definitely punch *_WAY_* above their weight!

Sure anyone can buy one as a first bird. The problems come later with a much shorter than normal lifespan due to them being fed constant artificial sugar from cheap nectar mix and non stop sweet fruit. They will contract diabetes or fungal infections or iron storage issues. The average person isn't going to feed them flowers, bee pollen and shrubs like eucalyptus, Grevillea etc. that they truly need.

Two arrive on my balcony in the middle of Sydney, every morning, and screech away until I give them Lorikeet food and apple. They then hang around squabbling and chirruping. That are intelligent characters but VERY demanding - usually do attention not necessarily food. Because I ignored them yesterday the little devils started pulling apart my Christmas lights!
To be honest I prefer Cockies (who sometimes land on the balcony rail and squawk, with a big display of yellow crown) and kookaburras - who arrive if you have a BBQ and try to steal sausages - which they then “kill” by battering to death.
But right in the city centre you don’t see a lot of kookies or Cockies. They are rare visitors.
      Then there are idiot Galahs......

There only drawback is there poop is like messy ,it’s loose because they only eat nector and fruit and veggies too , what I did was potty train her when I have her on me to pop in the sink , make a game out of it . Like awwww no more poppy when you spray it down the drain . Around her cage I put these plastic sheets on the wall , walls stay clean you just have to clean the plastic if she misses her cage .i attached to the wall with that stuff that don’t damage the walls you can take it off , no damage. She has a fairly large cage you will want to buy her toys to keep busy so she is not with you 24 hours a day .my tigger is 18 years old , I think there life span is about 20 , maybe longer I don’t know , she hasent slowed down yet so if your planing to get one . Think of a long relationship with her or him .i would also go on line and read as much as you could on them even buy some books they have them at pet shops . If I could help you with any thing else. Rainbow lorikeets are quite fiesty little things, even if they're cool with crawling on your shoulders and fingers, sometimes they don't like the idea of a big hovering hand over them. They're quite territorial little things, so they always like to be 'the boss'
Hope this helps ^~^ I have an older male one and he's just like that. Keep interacting with the baby everyday, not so much touching, but it should get tamer in a couple of months, it takes time.

Just saw this, main cage is in a corner of the house, we have that sticky Saran Wrap surrounding the cage vicinity, outside of the cage it’s all just my observation on her perch, drop some crumbs, just vacuum a little more than pre birds life

Hand clean the cage? Magic eraser, occasional hose off wash, if u cover the bottom with paper, not as frequent, but magic eraser is key for all the perches too

@@hipskipne1984 Yeah we've been spraying down the cage and using those hard bristle brushes. I'll definitely try the magic eraser though. Thank you. I leave a doggy pad at the bottom of the cage.

    @MC-cl9ip 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

My wife and I have had lories for years and while we absolutely love them, they are definitely NOT the right pet for most people. First, birds are not the right pet for most. The require a lot of time and commitment. Like a 2 year old that never grows up. Leave them in the cage all day and they go crazy and bite. If you are a dog person, don’t buy a bird. They aren’t obedient like dogs. More like cats in that regard. Lories are extra work and expense, requiring a special diet and care. Much cleaning. Don’t ever get one as your first bird. If you have successful experience as a bird owner, then and only then should you consider a lorie. Don’t get me wrong, they are amazing birds but there are so many unwanted birds out there from pet owners that didn’t know what they were getting into. For the sake of the animals, get a budgie first.

I can see it’s not a bunny rabbit , it’s got feathers and they probably bite people like you , in fact iam sure they do ! Do you want to know how o know this ? Because I have a rainbow Lori who is 18 years old , and still going strong ! Do you have one or did you ever raise one ?.....when they get older they only get sweeter , that’s if you know how to raise them right ! All they need is love and food ,,, so you think what you wanna think , iam 74 years old now , I don’t think anymore , haven’t got the time ! Lol

      You're 74 ??
      haha.. that's funny.... I'm 47 :P
      Can i ask..... Respectfully...
I mean.. we are not 2 16 year old kids on you tube
      Why this comment
"and they probably bite people like you"
      Was that necessary ?
I mean, i understand the younger generation and all their hate
but my generation and your generation shouldn't reflect those habits.
      anyway.. to your other questions
      Yes , i have 2
yes, i have raised them properly
in fairness, and i hope you allow for this
1 of them... Raised since he broke out of his shell
has had his biting stage, but doesn't really do that anymore, except accidentally when he tries to kiss my nose
the other one...... Got him at around 8 weeks old from a pet shop.
had a sign on the cage
"Beware, this bird bites" and i thought to myself
LOL..... "Obviously "... it's a rainbow lorikeet, i mean you may as well have put a sign that says
Beware, this bird has multiple colours
      LOL
      My next thought was...
pfffft, i've been around birds since i was single digits old
I took him in, he was my first,
      I loved him
he took a strange dislike to a few things
      1. if you pick up a plastic bag and it shakes and makes that noise... he will just launch at it and attack it , while also attacking your hand attached to it
      2. we have a Neverfail Filtered Water bottle (15L)
so.. When i carry the bottle into the house and the water splashes around inside the blue bottle
he attacks my hand that's carrying it
can get kinda dangerous if i drop it and i drop it on him
anyway.. that was a while back
then i got my other little one
and.. it's funny, but.... My other little one used to have conversations with the first one and as it would have it
I HAVE NO QUESTION IN MY MIND THAT THE SECOND ONE EXPLAINED TO THE FIRST ONE HOW TO BEHAVE AROUND ME
The second one now doesn't bite anywhere close to what he used to
and even when he does , he doesn't even try to break the skin, but instead, it's more of a "I'm trying to tell you something" Kind of bite
Now.. i have a high tolerance to pain and i'm very patient even when being bitten. so it's ok
and i reward him when he backs off and when he apologizes for doing what he did
but honestly.... i actually think this bird has mental issues or maybe was mistreated at some point... I don't know
in any case.... he gets plenty of love and has greatly improved
so... I do know what i'm talking about
My point was... you can't just tell people they are little bundles of joy
because they sort of start of that way
      then they become bloody terrors
then, they get better (Assuming you put in the work to make it better) as you said
so yeah.. I have 2 of them and have had for around 6 years now

@@martinkuliza well I can honestly say I have had no problems with my Tigger , she is loving and smart talks to me and tells me she loves me every time I walk in the door . When she was a baby she bite a few time but it really wasn’t a bite , a nibble is more like it ,when she knows she’s going to get in trouble for doing something she shouldn’t be doing I’ll say don’t you dear ! And she stops , now if I do something wrong in my home and start to curse lol , she will yell at me saying “DONT YOU DEAR ! in fact the rainbows that I have seen in pet shops were always friendly came on your finger , went on your shoulder , very loving , maybe I just haven’t ran in to a bad Lori as of yet .its just that when I see people like you with there negative comment to others without explaining every bird has a different personality, you put negativity in there heads like don’t buy a Lori you’ll be sorry .... some people don’t think for there self s , they take strangers advice , which is so sad . They will never know the happiness that pets can give to them .. like I said I have had tigger for 18 years now and she will probable at live me iam 74 but not well , on oxygen 24 /7 have RA and a lung disease. But iam happy that I had my Tigger in My life , she has bought me nothing but happiness.🌈🌈🌈
