    "Officer, I swear, we didn't take them from the wild as pets, they're actually squatting!"
    How lovely :) as a bird nerb myself with three special needs budgies, it's always refreshing to see people treat birds with the respect and playfulness they deserve. They may look (be) feathered dinosaurs, but they're incredibly smart. They're also very territorial, so not surprising the lorries went bonkers when cockatoos started appearing in an area they like and feed. One of my budgies, Iris, is great at mimicry and since the day we got her by flying into our house, she's been miming the calling vocalisations of sparrows and blackbirds. After a year she still goes ballistic every single day when they appear on the balcony because *she* called them.

    Lorikeets are hilarious. When I was living at my mum's place in 2016 I was adopted by a bonded pair of lorikeets who would come into my bedroom at sunrise and chew on my ear to wake me up. I used to keep a saucer of lorikeet food beside my bed but they seemed to enjoy waking me up anyway.
    Then they had two babies which is relatively uncommon for rainbow lorikeets - and they were really young and were struggling to care for them so they'd leave these two squawking babies sitting in my bedroom while they'd go and forage. Got some cool videos.
    They are remarkably inquisitive, affectionate and intelligent little parrots - and once they get to know you they never forget. They can recognise different humans - even on the street and once they know you they give you your own contact call which is like their name for you.
    Anytime I heard them calling me I'd drop whatever I was doing and come running.
    Even though I no longer live there they still visit and befriended my brother. One of the babies from 2016 had a black mole/beauty spot on his beak and he's returned as an adult.
    Where I live now I have a new local flock of lorikeets but they don't come inside because I have my own parrots and lorikeets can carry Beak and Feather Disease which is (sadly)endemic in many lorikeet flocks.

    I live in South Carolina. The Columbia Zoo has an enclosure with dozens of Lorikeets that you are allowed to enter. You can even buy small cups of nectar and they will sit on your hand and drink. They also like to land on your head and shoulders. It is fun, until one poops on you. I say this from experience. Every time we go to the zoo, that is the first place we go. One other thing is their calls are very loud when you have that many together.

    It’s so great to see these beautiful birds free and living out in their natural habitat! Australia has so many beautiful bird breeds. And for me, living in the U.S., I have only ever seen Lories and cockatoos in captivity and sold as pets. Now, even being a pet, they can still have wonderful lives. But it’s still so much better to see them totally free like this. (I didn’t see if she fed them or not… these only drink nectar don’t they??)

    • @fubberpish3614
      @fubberpish3614 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      they dont only drink nectar, but it does make up most of their diet. they'll also eat fruit, flowers and insects. however, as for all wild animals, it is advised not to feed them. it risks them getting dependent on humans and stop finding food on their own, and it may cause nutritional deficiencies. plus, large numbers of birds coming to a feeder together can spread diseases between the birds.

    Grew up only 12km from Sydney CBD and backed into a nature reserve.. living so close to a main city you wouldn't expect the amount of wild life on your doorstep.
    At my last place I went outside to feed the birds and then realised I was surrounded by about 15x sulfur crested cockatoos, 8x rainbow laurakeets, 5x kookaburras, a murder of Crows and they were all literally sitting waiting for food, in harmony and in a pre-agreed pecking order all the way down to the scrub/brush turkeys on the lawn.. it was eerie and beautiful at the same time. Truly blessed in Australia for wildlife 🇦🇺👍

    With patience and trust wild animals always let us into their world. Too bad we don't let them into ours without so often abusing that trust and harming them. Who is it that needs to learn from whom in that case? This woman never abuses that trust, but deeply respects it.

    Absolutely gorgeous birds, and in the wild......where they should be. Australia should ban the sale and transporting of any of their gorgeous birds overseas. This is their true life. The colours are so incredibly vibrant on them. I'd love to keep up with this famiy but I am not interested in any other social media site but youtube. Oh well...c'est la vie.
