  • NOTE: Opening your wheel will automatically void any warranty you may have so consider this carefully before attempting!
    This is a possible fix. I am not claiming that this is your particular issue but it's worth looking into. I am not to be held responsible for any damages you incur.
    Hello everyone, In this video, you will learn how to open up your Logitech G27 wheel and tighten optical sensor mounting screws and inspect the plastic optical ring disk for cracks.
    These to issues are the most common with many owners. I will also show you my configuration settings and my dead zone settings. Dead Zone settings are important to have fine-tuned to have your wheel perform correctly for the games you play and may have to be adjusted on a case by case basis.

    Everyone kept saying that my issue was the cracked encoder, And I took it apart and it wasn't cracked. But thanks to you mentioning those loose screws under it, you saved my wheel. Those screws were loose. I tightened them and now the wheel is perfect again. Thank you so much!

    Thank you so much for this video! One screw was already fixed and the other one I did not even tighten a quarter turn. So my expectations were pretty low that it would work. But it was a nice surprise that the steering wheel worked normally after the procedure and still does after a few hours with DiRT Rally. An interesting detail was that my part with the sensor was mirror-turned compared to yours, but the principle worked anyway.
    Cheers, have a great weekend and thank you once again!

    Well as one of the racers who doesn't see the point of Farmig simulator.....(but then I didn't see the point of trainsims until a friend gifted me one a few years back, so I could be wrong, but well I've got relatives who are farmers so no need to simulate it. ;) ) let me thank you for that helpful video.
    It did help me fix my G27, when I just had both of the issues, loose Optical encoder and a partially broken encoder wheel.
    I'm thinking about getting one of the brass replacements for it, as it's past Warranty (german 2 years one) anyway and I don't want it to fracture again, I want a bit more use out of it.
    Well bought it used at an absolute bargain price, around 130€ (hadn't had that issue back then) two years ago , when I wasn't sure if I'd stay in Simracing or not. And let's say I've been enjoying it a lot, the G29 is a bit meh, more buttons on the wheel but you have to buy the shifter extra, and well... the Thrustmasters cost a bit more.......

      Lol 😂, I didn't see the point in a Farming Simulator either until I decided one day to watch some game play footage. I was very surprised at the level of detail in the game and it was a launching point that opened my imagination. Watch some of my videos and you will see I use the game to tell all kinds of stories. Look at my Dusty Cove and West Coast play lists for the best examples 😊. Farmers as you well know do not drive a tractor and combine around 365 days a year. I like to tell stories about the everyday life aside from farming as well as farming.

    You won't be getting any grief from this racer haha! Excellent tutorial, was really glad to see those screws loose and nothing cracked.
    One thing worth noting that I noticed while disassembling my wheel is that the black optical sensor cover was the other way around compared to yours for some reason. The little arrow which you can see on it, as well as the red cable, were more towards the main board. I don't know whether this is a European thing on my end or some assembly line screw up, but taking off that black cover got me a little worried. But I unscrewed the main board to give myself some space and started lifting it with a flathead from under the side which the arrow pointed to and voila! it all went well.
    Again, thanks for a clear tutorial!

    Thanks for making this video! mine was cracked, it looks like the encoder wheel was manufactured as 2 pieces and they were glued or fused together? My encoder apparatus was mounted backwards from the video so the screws were accessible, I took them off, super glued the encoder wheel and held it together with a vise grip (lightly)... reinstalled it after it dryed. AND IT WORKS GREAT NOW!

    Great vid, helped me a ton with taking apart and putting the wheel back together safely. Thank you for documenting your experience.
    For me it turned out that the screws were loose and the ring was cracked, tried superglue-ing it together, did not seem to work (although I thought I did a good job), so I ended up ordering a brass replacement for the ring.
    The part was a bit too tight, so I had to use fine sandpaper to install it. And guess what: the wheel was still not centered. :'(
    I then used the DXTweak2 file you so kindly shared and I saw how value and raw arrows for the Wheel axis were off-centered when meeting in the middle. Can't remember what buttons I pressed in that software, but it then re-calibrated the two arrows and fixed my wheel.
    Now, I have no idea if the screw tightening and the new brass ring were really necessary, but I have a fixed G27 now. I've had this since 2011 and I hope to have it for just as many years to come now :))

    Excellent work on the video! It has helped me out tremendously to fix my wheel. It was indeed the optical disk. However, during calibration, it doesn't go the full 900 degrees, it stops at 450, then the green light on the shifter blinks and it stops attempting calibration. Any suggestions? It feels like a "hard" lock almost. not something I could get past by pushing.

    • @Atomic67G
      @Atomic67G  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much for watching and for the compliment.
      Regarding getting the full 900°,
      1. you need to have a clean copy of the legacy profile software installed.
      2. unplug wheel and uninstall your current profile software.
      3. Run Glary soft registry cleaner
      4. install legacy software and follow prompts during install as to when you need to plug wheel back in.
      5. If wheel is not perfectly centered after this then install DX TWEAK software which let's you manually align wheel.
      I have provided all software links in the description of this video and can be downloaded from my Google drive.
      Hope this helps you 😊👍

    • @Atomic67G

      if it won't calibrate then either you didn't repair the disk properly or you just need to re calibrate. I included a link to my Google drive and it contains the legacy software and a copy of DX Tweek. Use them both to recalibrate and recenter.

      Thanks very much for watching Mike. I have to say they Logitech really has a serious design flaw regarding optical sensor and internals. They make a metal wheel wrapped in leather but use plastic moving parts inside? The G29 is the same way. I wonder what Logitech will do with the Farming Simulator wheel kit now that they bought Saitek. Probably keep it the same and raise the price, lol.

    • @GrizzlyBearSims
      @GrizzlyBearSims 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the million dollar question. The Saitek Farming Wheel has serious quality issue from what I've read and seen on TH-cam. Many have stated they are on their second and third sets due to them breaking after only a few weeks/months of use. So I would hope that Logitech improves the design. But yea, I'm sure the price will go up.
      I'm really shocked to hear of the design flaws in the G27 and up. I've used Logitech gear in flight sim for years and have had my G27 kit for about two years and all is rock solid (knocking on wood).
      So far I've not encountered an issue with this sensor. But I'll certainly know where to look for a solution if things go south. Thanks Eustace for recording this video.

    • @Atomic67G
      @Atomic67G  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you're very welcome Jerry and I will say G27 is leaps and bounds better than the G29 predecessor. I have a G29 and it sits broken on my shelf. there was a bad design flaw in the G29 when it calibrates it calibrates quite violently and there is a wiring connection inside that breaks and it's extremely hard to detect because the wiring breaks within its insulation so you can't see anything visibly you have to literally take the unit apart and use a test light to find what connections are not active. Logitech says nothing about it and continues to sell the scrap metal wheel - business as usual.

  • @FarmerKlein
    @FarmerKlein 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I saw you have the sensitivity at 200%. Does that make the wheel on the game respond more than the input you give on the real wheel? I have also changed the deadzone down as at the default it was like turning the wheel 1/8th of a rotation before the in game wheel would do anything.

    • @Atomic67G
      @Atomic67G  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aaron Klein Hi Aaron, thanks very much for watching and for the question. Yes, I find having sensitivity up high on everything makes it more responsive. I do that especially with the mouse so I can turn my head faster. Regarding the wheel turning, try your dead zones at 10%. Seems to be a nice sweet spot for me.

    Had an issue last year once or twice where after awhile the wheel would be kicked right by about 3 degrees. Went away and thought nothing of it until last night after 3 wheel reconnects it was recurring. Opened it up for the first time in its life (The wheel base, that is) and sure enough the encoder head was SO LOOSE i had a bitch of a time getting the plug and dust cover off the motor and encoder bay. I DID end up stripping a wheel yoke screw (one of the long, course threaded suckers, luckily) that'll bite me in the ass later i'm sure. but it's together and works great. Thanks, Eustace!

      Push come to shove I MAY be able to loosen it with a pair of pliers and buy a replacement screw. But we'll see if it gets to that, I figure the FFB will fail by that time. MOMO lasted 8 years of light service, G27 is on year 3 of hard service

      I can't tell you for certain unless I was sitting in front of the unit. Itcould be a number of things.
      G25 is a very old wheel. You could have outdated software and drivers for the wheel.
      The USB for the wheel could be bad or the board in the wheel could be failing.

  • @pwollerman

    Hi, Atomic67 or Eustace - I have a G27 that has worked fine for several years. I had to move my racing setup and I think I unplugged the wheel USB while it was live, as you mention somewhere.
    Now, despite tightening the screws on the motors and sensor holder it is improved but I cannot get rid of about 10 degrees of a dead area at the centre. It makes it much harder to drive with and unfortunately racing shows my previous lap times to rub it in!
    I have tried removing the existing driver and installing the legacy one from your Drive and have tried just about every combination of adjustment and calibration in racing and the Logitech software, to no avail.
    I can see the wheel making fine movements in the iracing dashboard and when calibrating, so I infer it is working correctly as far as the sensor goes, and assume it is something to do with the driver (software, not me!).
    Any further ideas or should I call Logitech and hope they support an old product?

      Unplug the wheel from outlet and unplug the USB.
      uninstall the software. Then use Glarysoft registry cleaner to remove residual config files.
      Restart your computer.
      reinstall the software.
      Follow software prompts as to when to plug your wheel back in.
      Make sure in the software that you do not have auto update active nor should you have automatic game settings search active.
      If those steps don't fix your problem then it's possible that you have a bad sensor or broken wire in the USB cable either at the attachment point to the circuit board or the wiring inside the cable covering it damaged at some point.
      I don't know what county you live in but you can find an electronics repair shop that would diagnose and repair the problem. It may cost you anywhere from $50- $100 but that's alot cheaper than a new wheel.
      You can also take it to a technical school in your area and let the students fix it. That's usually free.
      Let me know how you make out.

    Oh my! Today I started having problems again with the center of the wheel after not being used for about a week or so. This happened before and I had to get it to change in a local shop I thought that it had been fixed permanently. Today I opened the wheel and to my surprise the encoder wasn't cracked but I glued a Washer just in case as I saw on other videos. in my country Argentina the metal encoder is around 50 to 60 bucks which is a a lot so I'm wondering how I can fix it cheaply, when you said we could glue the piece together to the motor, which kind of glue would you suggest?

    • @Atomic67G
      @Atomic67G  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bautista Prea
      Hi Bautista, just to let you know glue is a very very temporary fix and you might get glue on the optical sensor. You can remove that cracked component and look up a local business that does 3d printing. They can replicate a new one and it does not cost very much at all.

    • @bautistap8515
      @bautistap8515 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eustace Pharmer thank you for the quick response. The problem is that in Argentina 3D printing is very primitive yet and expensive too. What I'm I think I'm going to do is to the temporary fix the best I can and when I go to the US buy the metal one which I think it's expensive to. To be fair I have so many problems with my Logitech G27 wheel that I think I'm spending more money on repairing it then if I bought a new one. On the other hand I don't think I can make much money by selling it (150 to 200 Max) and as I am thinking of buying a new PC Plus repairing this wheel I will not have enough money to buy maybe thrustmaster wheel or similar. Logitech has not been kind to me!!

      If you are referring to the optical sensor disk, You can try using a very small amount of Gorilla gel instant adhesive but you have to be extremely neat and careful. You can't get any of it on the surface of the disk or it won't work right or at all.

    I have seriously messed with the encoder disk (got a free G27 from a colleague who asked me to check it out because it "has problems"), which was cracked in about 6 places, put it back together with a very thin metal tape) and the 3 dots you mention I think are just results of injection-molding the part and are not anything to worry about, it's the slots you better not cover.
    For anyone suffering auto-calibration problems: make sure the gear sprocket that moves sideways is lining up in the sense that the center position of the wheel should have a distance left and right that's equal, otherwise the endstops will not be met accordingly and self-calibration will fail.

      Hi Nikolas, thanks for watching and for the question.
      First thing I have to ask is, do you create profiles for your games using the Logitech profiler software?
      That's an important step and because G27 is not supported anymore the software will try to update every time you unplug your wheel when the PC is >ON<
      It will update to a wheel you don't have.
      if you must unplug your wheel; do it when your PC is turned >OFFOFF< as well.
      Also, if you're software updates you'll have to Uninstall that software and use a registry cleaner than reinstall the correct software.
      I recommend Glarysoft to clean registry.
      I have a link in the description of this video to my Google drive which has the Logitech G27 profiler and a program called DX Tweak to fine tune and recenter your wheel. Let me know how it goes.

    Hello,
    I know this video is old but I hope you could help me.
    I bought a new PC and when I was installing Logitech gaming software I didn't notice that instead of detecting Logitech g27 it showed g27 as ps2 and opened calibration. I followed the instructions in calibration (it seems off the center in the calibration window, so I tried to correct it) and finished installation. After that when Logitech gaming software launched I noticed that g27 acts like ps2, so I unplug usb and plug it in and it helped, BUT my g27 is now off center. The center is 30° to right. I uninstalled everything and tried it again but it seems like g27 changes values for the center itself (like in the wheel not in the program), I tried to connect it to old PC but the problem stays :(
    Sorry for my bad english. I hope you will be able to help me because I really want to drive on my wheel :(

    • @Atomic67G

      Hello,I would be happy to help you.
      After you uninstall the software use a registry cleaner such as Glarysoft to clean your PC registry. Install the G27 software I have linked in description of this video. It's the original version.
      After installing go in the settings and turn off automatic update and turn off Detect new games. From this point you can not unplug your wheel from PC anymore. If you do, then you will have to do this process each time.
      if you're wheel is still not center after all this go in wheel settings and make sure your wheel is set to 900° of rotation and spring back strength is at maximum.
      If this does not work then also download the DXTweak software I also provided in that link in my description. Look at 13:57 in this video. Match each setting to watch I show in the pictures.

      Maybe it will be helpful for someone: check the degrees of rotation: it should be 450 in one side and 450 in the other. Less values means that you have assembled it wrong. Check the stopper on the main axis: it should look upwards, othewise it may not let the wheel to make a full rotation and cause this calibration issue.

    I came here for a hand lotion commercial and instead i figured out how to fix my wheel. Sadly tho i have to redo it all over again since i think i have glue on a few of those holes on the optical encoder :/ I had to laugh at mine tho, when i got to that part, those 2 screws holding it down, well mine were half out. Im kind of amazed at how long it went with them out before i got the centering issue due to a break finally happening.
    I have a friend who's boss will 3d print out a new one for me if i want to for like 10$ which i might do if i can find the correct format of one for. I did buy a washer to glue in to act as a brace to hold it it tho. M5 was the size, i cant remember what class it was tho (for thickness). The washer was perfect size tho and held really snug to the center piece. I was a bit amazed at how well it fitted in.
    Great video tho. It really helped with the way you zoomed in and used the screwdrivers as a guide on thing.

      I just woke up so havent touched it, but had it soaking in soapy water for the last 15 hours or so in hopes to losen up the glue a bit to try to remove it. its funny because the wheel would lose its centerting to the left about 30 degrees, and now when it turns on and calibrates its to the right about 30%
      After tearing it down and rebuilding it up about 3 or 4 times i did notice the wheel start to get more tighter o turn, which im assuming is from the lubrication on it getting wore off a bit.

      So i just followed your guide, worked great, got to the 2 screws to tighten, they were already very tight, i then inspected the optical encoder wheel , no damage, looked to be in pristine condition, put it all back together, still getting alignment problem, any ideas?

    • @thrandisher
      @thrandisher 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One thing to make sure is to put the optical encoder with the shaft down (i put it back together upside down and had to do it again). Also make sure the encoder is closer to the side with the black relay thingy. Mine looked in great condition but i finnaly found a spot that it was cracked at.
      I ended up buying a old momo at the goodwill bins and used it in its place. I had to modify it a bit and then super glue it it to the shaft, so its only a temperary fix for me.
      Does yours lose alignment over time/usage? At first i used a old program called, DXTWEAK, and set the alignment off to the side so it would align up. Its a neat old uitlity, about 10 year old, which worked fine on my win 10 system.
      If its not drifting off alignment with use, then i would definitly check out that dxtweak utility.
      I just got mine working the other day but havent been able to test it out as the heat came and my feet swelled up so i cant do any driving right now. Teaches me for not drinking enough water, lol.
      On mine, there are 4 grooves and it was at the end of one groove where the crack was at. Sadly it looks like the part was designed to fail after awhile.
      Another thing you could do is just buy a washer to put on the side, glue it to strenghen it. I believe it was a m5 washer (metric, size 5). I got glue in the spokes so it fails for me :/

      Hey Arrakis, thanks for all the great info. First of all I'm sorry you have swelling and discomfort. Second, if you use dxtweek be sure to download the appropriate version for your system. I run windows 10 64bit. and found someone who has the file.
      Also, I think there are two fixes that eventually will be necessary.
      1. look for a local tool and dye maker. Give them the part and they can make a replica out of metal. You can make another plastic one if you contact someone with a 3d printer.
      2. buy a new wheel. I can't say anything good about the new G29. I have one and it broke in 3 months from a known wire breaking problem due to its violent calibration sequence.

      Hi buggy, not sure what you mean by "Spokes". Do you mean that little black optical disk? If that is broken you need to replace it. Some people glue it back together but I don't recommend doing that. it won't last and if you get glue on the surface of the disk it won't work right. You can find online someone selling a G27 for parts or you can contact a local 3d print service to make a disk for you. it's not expensive in comparison to buying a new wheel. it can cost around $60 American to have it made.

      if you don't feel comfortable messing with it then I advise you to take it to an electronics repair shop and they will do it for you.
      Thank you for your comment 😊 👍

      I'm sorry to read that but it's not the worst thing that could be wrong with it.
      Contact a local 3D printing service and they can easily make you a new one. If you don't have a business locally, there's plenty of them online. Do your research and choose one with a good reputation. It's not going to be dirt cheap but it's a hell of a lot less than a new wheel.
      Also, don't tell them what the part is for because they may try to overcharge you. All they need to know is, "Here's the item I need made".

      @@Atomic67G I found this on ebay do you think this will work www.ebay.co.uk/itm/60-Slot-Steering-Wheel-Optical-Encoder-For-Logitech-G25-Old-G27-UK-Fast-Ship-/353472480512?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286

      I would be very cautious buying that particular one. It's sent from China. People have said it can take weeks to months to get the encoder and you run the risk of not getting it at all.
      In my opinion, ebay is not the place to shop for items like that.
      Let me know what you decide to do and how your experience went.
