its an addiction i rmb i first started wearing weave in 6th grade for dance comps,, it was a once in a while thing then i wanted braids for the first day of school fast forward now i want a sew in for the first day of school it was shoulder length water wave, then u started making my own money so now i want acrylic nails and weave the nails started at sports length my weaves sneakily got longer next thing i know im wearing acrylic claws and 30 inch indonesian bundles IN HIGH SCHOOL. caught myself having a conversation w some girls about hair and i heard myself saying "i could nevvverrr wear short nails i could neverrr wear hair shorter than 20 inches" then i realized wtf i was talking about im bragging about the length of chemicals being slapped on top of my nails and cant stand the way i look without them. im wearing another womans hair bragging about how i would never wear shorter length hair of another woman, all this in the span of 6th grade to 12th grade im just glad i realized it before it affected my mind more than it did. its truly an addiction to want longer and longer fake products its no different than body builders pumping their body with black market poison for bigger muscles, its no different than the girls addicted to butt shots, addiction is addiction its no different and thts all i want ppl to admit its no different.

when they say “my hair is too much work” then proceeded to buy a $100-$700 wig, fit the wig cap, cut the wig cap, glue the wig cap, cut the lace, tint the lace, align the wig, glue it once, wait for it to dry, glue it twice, wait for it to dry, pluck the wig, cut the edges, and that’s all BEFORE styling it. all for it STILL look unnatural. These silky wigs don’t frame our facial features… bc it’s not our hair. Your real hair is dry and unmanageable because it’s been neglected!!

This is actually a very exciting time for us! Black women have the power to shut down an entire industry that thrives on our hating our natural appearance. If we all embrace our natural hair or wigs and pieces that *look like our natural hair* the lacefront, straight hair, hair glue industry is *dead* . We singlehandedly uphold this industry which is based on the *myth* that our natural hair is ugly. Let's shut it down!

I just started only wearing my hair recently. No weaves, no wigs, no braids with added extensions. Shamefully, it took me dating a nonblack man for me to realize how goofy it was for me to only be comfortable with someone else’s hair on my head. He couldn’t understand that concept at all, and when i tried to explain it to him i realized it made no sense. I can’t say I feel 100% confident with my hair, but I’m faking it until I make it. It’s definitely a dysmorphia and mental illness. I used to only wear straight wigs and weaves and when I started my spiritual journey I cut off my hair and wore it in a short natural style and I remember how I terrified I felt to leave the house and do simple things like go grocery shopping. It was crazy! I wore my hair like that until I started feeling comfortable and it took some time. I then got locs and never looked back!

Some cultures in Africa wore wigs I'm not denying that the reasoning but throughtout history wigs were the norm. Now do we have to wear bone straight hair not really but we sometimes put too much power on things. Every race of woman is changing their hair, dying their hair blonde, red, etc, wearing clip ins etc but black women are supposed to refuse things because according to some it's morally wrong. Why is hair a morality choice only for black women?

@@jasminepearls1047 your missing the point. It's really deeper than race to be honest. Basically the point is how enhancements on our physical appearance (black or white) can condition us to think the natural state is not as beautiful. And its not just hair, but lashes, makeup, anything we add to "feel" more beautiful. Black women in particular have been scrutinized for our natural hair so this covo is a little bit more personal to us.

@@jasminepearls1047 Thank You ...this is so well written. I don't wear wigs, weaves, etc. but I admire the ones that can and do. All races wear wigs.... we as a race were criticized about our hair ,our looks and tried so hard to change it anyway we could. so now its a big thing with wigs and weaves because someone has decided to to say we are beautiful as we are and all that mess but we already knew that it was other races and cultures that made us feel differently. There are more "caucasian" women wearing more wigs than we do but we are the only race that's criticized for it. Honestly I can't take black women seriously when they say wigs or even silk presses are easier than natural hair. I've worn wigs and I used to straighten my hair to death, and my natural hair is way less stressful than both. I needed 30 extra minutes to get ready with a lace front and with straight hair I have to be afraid of water, sweat, rain, humidity, bubbles, shower steam, etc or I was restraightening it all the time to look 'presentable'. With my natural hair, all I gotta do is deal with wash day. Wash day is the only time my hair is time-consuming. The only time I touch my hair between washes is to moisturize my hair and to oil my scalp, which is not much work. I'll never judge a black woman for choosing to wear wigs, weaves, silk presses, etc, but the dishonesty is exhausting.

I thought I was the only one who thought straight styles especially silk presses were more stressful! I love it but I’ve gotten used to not combing and styling my hair daily so it really became a chore for me. I’ve been wearing my hair in variations of twists hairstyles. And why is it so costly for a press? 😔

I’ve been called texturist for saying the same thing! I realized my natural hair was easier than maintaining hair in an unnatural texture (i was hooked to the flat iron). My hair honestly looked horribly frizzy, lol but battle my hair at it’s worst taught me hiw to deal with my mane. Once you master styling your own natural hair, you come up with quick styles and moisturizing routines.

    • @MyAccountForCommenting
      @MyAccountForCommenting 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

It depends on the style and how well your hair handles being straight. For me, a loose straight style is more manageable than a loose natural style. I've never worn a wig. I put on a shower cap, use an umbrella, tie my hair at night, and use a sweat-wicking headband when I work out regardless of my hair style. When I straighten my hair, the process from washing takes me ~4 hrs, and it lasts 3-4 weeks without me doing anything to it. If I wear a loose natural style, the process from washing usually requires drying overnight to set, and it lasts ~4 days before getting poofy and dry. When my hair is straight, it looks the exact same every day. When I wear a loose natural style, my hair gradually changes every day as it goes from how I set it to being dry/poofy and requires some sort of daily management. I can't predict exactly what my hair is going to be on when I wake up from day to day

A couple of weeks ago, my sister in law complimented my hair. I have long healthy natural hair. She kept talking about how long and curly it was. I have tighter curls and my hair type is 4a but it appears looser now that it’s longer. My sister in law who has 4c hair said that her hair was very dry and it’s difficult to deal with. I told her no it’s not difficult to deal with, you just need to moisturize and take care of your hair. She asked me how I took care of my hair and I told her my hair routine and products. I wash and condition once a week, detangle, and braid it into 4 braids. I take it down after 5 days and wear it down for two days before rebraiding it on wash day. I also let her know that products don’t make your hair grow. It’s having a consistent routine that helps you grow healthy hair. I also showed her natural hair TH-camrs I follow on TH-cam which helped me learn how to take care of my hair. She told me it’s “ too much work “. My sister in law spends HOURS installing her weave, blow drying and straightening her hair, and braiding her hair with extensions like box braids but taking care of her natural hair is “too much work.” I don’t understand why so many black women think this way. I’m also tired of the self deprecating videos on Tiktok.

Bc we all have different hair and textures sometime it is too much to deal with atm. My style would work & stay with certain products & keeping it healthy. Now it will not stay no matter the routine treatment or products. And if I hv an invite to a wedding for next week or month I’m not going to test it by wearing my natural hair but not sure what my hair’ll look like by the end of the night. 😢 I wish I could still wear my hair with confidence as I did when I was younger.

I think there's different views on what's considered "work" and how much is "too much". She might think it's too much work for the result she expects when doing her natural hair.
For example I have short 4z hair, and 30 minutes of styling it might get me a slick back crackhead bun at most. And by "slick" I mean with a couple stray away hairs because I still have yet to find a gel/pomade/edge control that actually holds my hair texture down (without heat treatment).
Whereas 30 minutes with a lace front, you get obviously different results in a shorter time frame.
      Just offering a different perspective.
Looser hair textures are much easier to style. Length, texture, all that comes into play. Black women need to start embracing their natural hair but I'd be lying if I said I couldn't understand why they go for the synthetic styles. More options with the same, or less, amount of work.

I think we should wear our hair regardless of our confidence. Because even though other groups wear fake hair too it mostly matches their texture. Silk on silk.
It’s okay to have straight styles but make it kinky! Even our silky straightened hair doesn’t look the same as other groups silky hair and I think because so many of us never wear our actual hair or just wear it for a bit and wear other textures it’s caused insecurity in us and adds to unspoken inferior complexes we have and all of other races have about us. We’re still trying to appeal to a world that has always wanted us to feel inferior and still does. We have to take control

Its a cop out excuse cause they wanna look like a “baddie”.. It’s definitely a mental thing when you feel beautiful and confident wearing the REAL hair of other ethnic women… I watched a documentary on how black women get their hair… these ethnic women cut their hair and sacrifice it to their gods, and send it over to us… most of these women are poor and don’t even want to cut their hair , but have to to pay bills and feed their family. It’s truly sad. And I want no parts in that ‼️ Thanks for bringing this out, those who got understanding will agree ❤

Wigs are literally head coverings. And a lot of different cultures and religions wear head coverings for spiritual protection, modesty and to display their dedication to God to the world. And these wigs also send a message. It sends a one of insecurity, low self esteem and the glorification of the look of another group of people. The dedication to these wigs and loose hair extensions is almost religious. But instead of dedication to a higher power it’s to the approval of broken men and to social validation.
And I don’t by any means think that is an extreme comparison I mean look at the way these “influencers” who get the guy are praised, defended and emulated. Society has created a faux scarcity of good men and now use women’s innate drive to mate against us. The competitiveness is ridiculous. The vast majority of us are looking for one man and I promise you that it’s possible to find a good man who will love you in your natural state. Take a step back to heal and you’ll realize that being loved, accepted and appreciated does not warrant all of this.

I’m so glad I’m seeing more videos like this. Even if i don’t necessarily agree with every point, IT NEEDS TO BE SAID, IDC! It’s actually embarrassing atp. We all know why bw have been pushed to wear textures that aren’t theirs and it’s not our fault; but it is our responsibility! We have to bring younger women into this world and how silly is it if we don’t set the foundation for them?!?!? Why are babies getting wigs laid?!?!? Why are teenagers feeling like they need lacefronts in hs and middle school?? It’s becoming generational just like perms. Very disheartening. The more we all wear our natural hair, the more normal it’ll be. But they’ve convinced themselves purchasing a $800 unit, plucking it, customizing it, and re applying it every 2 business days is easier than detangling and styling their own hair once a week. As someone with the tightest coil pattern, I’m tired of them pretending it’s rocket science. This is why it’s taken so long to get products and weaves that cater to us. Those companies aren’t making 4c extensions bc they know they won’t sell! They’re not making products with us as the target audience bc not enough of us have educated ourselves on our own texture to even KNOW what it is that we need in a product! We need to get it together

A lot of videos like this have been coming up in my feed. It feels like this natural hair movement reboot where we're unpacking a lot of the internal blocks that tripped many of us up in the last cycle, and I'm so here for it! I've been natural for well over 20 years and it wasn't always easy. Not because it's inherently harder to care for, but because there is a higher learning curve to figuring out how to style and care for type 4 hair when you spent so long trying to make it something it's not. I'm glad that there are women willing to put in the work to normalize wearing what grows naturally out of our heads. My hope is the generation behind us have a future version of themselves to look at that doesn't make them feel like they have to contort themselves into another person's aesthetic in order to be beautiful. It's the reason I didn't give up during those times when I was on the struggle bus an had no idea what I was doing. I struggled with my hair so that hopefully the black girls thirty years from now don't have to.

I’m brown skin and my hair complements my skin tone so well, why wouldn’t I want to wear it and let the whole world see it everyday? Plus I’m not broke, my parents and I just bought me my first car in cash, and I have money put aside for school. And my family takes vacations twice a year. That is not broke at ALL. so others can become more comfortable with seeing their natural hair on others.
Sad to say most people are followers and not leaders.
So it's really up to the leaders to break the barriers and then everyone else will follow.

It's really nice to hear someone from the lifestyle speak up about it. I've always been a natural hair girly and when I speak up about how it does more harm than good, its not economical, and it's not a real protective style, people get made. I like how you pointed out how it's really not necessarily a low-maintenance style that people who hate their hair try to claim. Also, it only looks good for a few days, and it's not worth the money and process people go through.

I also think it may be whatever is trending, I notice a lot of high schoolers and young women wearing either the middle part buss down wig or the micro box braids with the curly/wavy add ons… I think if majority of women started to wear afros then that would be the next style

I love your perspective in this video! This is a conversation that I had with myself a few years ago. I was the type of girl that wouldn’t leave the house with out lashes/makeup and a wig. It took me a while to realize that I was uncomfortable in my own skin and my self confidence was depleted. I did not like that so I made some changes. I stopped wearing wigs, makeup, lashes… the whole 9. I loc’d my hair and I worked on clearing my acne and improving my overall physical health. When I tell you that has been the best thing I could have ever done for myself. Flaws and all I’ve never been more confident in my own skin. I still do my hair (locs) but like you said I’ve learned to style it to compliment my personality and fit my lifestyle. I love my natural hair 🥰💗

Preach sissss! Omg I went on a natural and spiritual journey last year October and told myself I wouldn’t wear a wig again until I am 100% confident within myself. I have gotten braids twice within these 8 months and silk presses 3 times and when I tell you bay bay …hair dysmorphia is REAL. I moved to Atlanta 3 1/2 years ago and saw all the “popular” women wearing wigs and getting their hair done 1-2 weeks. I thought I should be apart of the band wagon too. I never wore a lace front in my life always wore my hair whether I added pieces or not. I changed who I was to receive a certain attention and approval that I didn’t need. Lost my edges, lost friends, and lost confidence in myself along the way. It’s been a rough journey but I am embracing every moment of me being able to actually feel my own scalp everyday and not wearing that brown wig cap with super glue on it to lay down some “foreign” hair chile. Thanks for this video I needed you today sis! We ALL do! 🤍🤍🗣️

Fav comment. This is so real. It started in elementary school for me girl. I only had 3 or 4 wigs and it’s still something that be in the back of my head like dang should I get a install?? And recently this older black lady publicly made a comment abt my fro so I slicked my hair into a bun 🙄 I got insecure, idk. I feel like I’m back at square one. But ima make a vid abt that cuz black women be our biggest opps !

it wasnt until i stopped wearing the wigs and started taking care of my hair and finding what worked for me that i finally prefered wearing my own hair and now it’s growing so long. I kinda look back and cringe at all the bad wigs and stress of wearing someone else’s hair on top of mine. It’s crazy, i hope black women can find peace away from the wigs and weaves as i did. I don’t have to worry about blending lace or baby hairs or helmet hair or night caps. Our natural hair can do a lot if you nurture and work with it

I wore clip-in extensions blended with my natural hair for a month and a half. When it was time to take them out, I felt so ugly without them. Wearing full-face makeup can have a similar effect. I had to ease up on them.

I also think a lot of Black women don't like wearing their natural hair because it makes them look younger than what they are. And that can be annoying especially if you've been mistaken for a teen, approached by teen boys or even working in higher positions and people not taking you seriously. So I can understand both perspectives.

The beauty industry in general has us in a chokehold…I used to wake up 2 hours to get ready until I realized I’d sucked the fun and the creativity out of beauty routines. I was doing the most because subconsciously I felt I had to. A switch up is okay! But a dependency…now that has to be closely examined. Because fr why?

I love this video🙌🏾 I don’t have type 4 hair but even with type 3 hair I used to wish it was straight as a kid. I had to unlearn my internalized anti-blackness and I’m glad I did because my hair was fried trying to keep it straight 24/7. As black women, I really want for us to embrace and love all of our features, especially the “undesirable” ones.

I love you DEARLY!! You kept it real the entire video!!! So many black women don't want to hear this because social media is telling them otherwise. Weave is not cute at all to me. When I look back at my old pictures, I would say to myself, girl that 30' middle part blonde buss down don't even compliment your melanin! Like what are you doing?.. Weave really took away my natural aesthetic. Now, I wear my natural hair all year round. I even named my fro Lol. More black women need to watch this video. Ditch the wigs and wear your natural hair. You'll feel so beautiful and confident!

I had really bad hair delusion. I have 3c/4a hair and would straighten it or wear weave. For the 18 months I’ve had a curly pixie with my natural hair and this is the most flattering style I have worn! Sometimes I straighten it for a cute little bob look but apart from that I’m a curly pixie girl!
