My husband and I just watched this together and had a really interesting conversation about how to identify your style roots from a masculine perspective versus a feminine one. We both agree that your style root system feels so much more expansive and unlimited, than going the traditional aesthetics route. Great video!
Something that I think gets overlooked when it comes to representing one's personal style is the presence of jewelry and accessories. Someone can wear a totally black outfit and then add a necklace and change the tone of the whole look.
You’re right, that’s true, meanwhile wearing an all-black outfit without any jewelry at all would be a very bold French Girl look for daytime, and depending on the textures of the clothing, along with hair and makeup, an all-black outfit without jewelry could also be a bold Rocker Chick look.
I think the biggest thing for me has been realizing that my third root changes with the seasons! For spring and summer I lean more sun while for fall and winter I like more mushroom influences
Same I’m 🌎🍄🔥in the colder months lots of sweaters and fabrics that look simple, country/western, and elegant in the warmer months I guess I swap 🔥 for 🌸 for more of touch of boho farmer’s daughter vibe it’s like the only time I really wear prints that aren’t plaid too
I'm sooo happy I'm not alone in this! Because during the warmer seasons I am 🍄🗿🌍 while in the colder seasons because I am also working a lot more 🌍 changes to 🗻
@@pennym.k this! I need Ellie to do a tutorial on how to incorporate your style into work clothes. Personally I’m a dance teacher and a nurse’s assistant so my dress codes are very stone and mountain as well as sun because for both jobs I’m working with kids but I find I’ve lost myself in my work clothes due to no true self expression due to the types of styles offered in scrubs and athletic wear
It’s wild to me that we both changed our style roots from 🌸🍄🔥 to 🌸🍄☀️ at around the same time. Also we’re both ENFPs and soft classics. And we both have classic and ingenue in our essence blends. This is like my dream yt channel bc all of your personal examples apply to me perfectly lol
@@maddiemae73 I have a certain style for each season tbh so mushroom might trade with moon in colder weather sometimes. From most to least: Flower. Mushroom. Sun. Less but still sometimes: Moon. Fire. Earth I put that comment before I watched the whole video but I realize we have the same roots !! Maybe you're onto smth!!
I'm a very masculine woman (as in I wear "men's clothes") and this is nice for helping me articulate that a bit more. A lot of style advice just doesn't work for me normally but this is more flexible and less idk judgemental lol
This exercise has really helped me to come back to my authentic style after getting carried away copying influencers and aesthetics! It is tough because I am really drawn to a lot of looks worn by people who just don't have a lot of curve. I buy the items they wear, try them on, and am disappointed when they don't feel right on my soft dramatic body. I think my primary style roots are mushroom, stone, and flower. My playful influence gets less sporty in the cooler months and turns a bit toward sun.
FELT IN MY SOFT DRAMATIC SOUL. most of the trends nowadays are for non-curvy people! so I really have to lean towards making my own style instead of copying the pretty stuff I see online 😭😭 I've pretty much accepted it now, especially after finding out that I'm more confident when I'm wearing pieces that suit my body, instead of the famous streetwear and baggy clothing :))
My style roots are: Stone, Mushroom, and Earth (sometimes Sun). I’m wearing an outfit today that I feel like honors my roots, and it feels so good. It’s sweet and simple, casual and comfortable, and a little earthy and undone, which is how I’d describe my style or at least the vibe I go for. And looking back at photos of myself that were taken today I can’t help but think, “Wow, this feels like ME.” ❤
@@alissaa23 I really like Julie Sariñana (aka sincerelyjules). Well, not so much of her current style but more so her past looks. I haven’t seen too many great examples of this combo either.
I have to say that this Style Roots system is genius because it really helps to personalize people’s style and help them be genuinely happy with their wardrobe and get a clear sense of how to dress to make them happy and present themselves to the world. It’s not like aesthetic trends where you have to fit into a box that may not be 100% right for you or “if you’re such-and-such body type, you NEED to wear this and avoid that!” It’s a great way to narrow down people’s preferences and help them all work together and present how they are are to the world and feel happy and confident 😊
This exercise is SO GOOD!!! Kibbe and Kitchener have already helped me so much defining what suits me but adding that extra personal touch thanks to your style roots theory is fun! I've even been able to take one step further and define how I want to use style roots: In my silhouette/shapes of my clothes: mountain and fire (powerful, professional, classy and sexy/magnetic and romantic) In the colors and patterns: sun (bright, fun, colorful, original, different) In the materials: earth (natural (cotton, linen)) and comfortable 😱😱😱😱😱 This makes so much sense!!!! Thank you!!!!
I have been calling my style girly, edgy and relaxed for several years without knowing why. Thank you for confirming that I have Flower, Moon and Stone. My shopping and styling will be so much easier from now on.
I definitely misunderstood you and did this differently with words like "alien" and "futuristic" but I managed to bring everything together in the end with alot of creative thinking and associations. I find with my mood changes I can do most style roots but seem to gravitate more towards 🍄 🌞 🌙 + 🌎 lol fun excersize! 👽✌️
Futuristic definitely counts as a style word! She even has a pinterest board on it. Futuristic is my main style word and doesn’t quite fit with her system as much but moon + sun captures enough of it for me.
Love this! Turns out my intuition the first time around was right. I couldn’t land on my third root! After considering 🍄 and 🪨, I’m back to my original three: 🌸☀️🌎 It was so helpful to have you distinguish earth as academic, bohemian, and 70s. There’s so much mushroom crossover with both flower and earth, and I knew I had some stone influences in there somewhere. Earth ticks all those boxes. Thanks again for this one!!
I went on a similar journey. I kept trying to make mushroom work because the words work. But it turns out that's really just the earth in me plus a smidge of flower.
I love how you incorporate my favourite things: brainstorming, words, and fashion! It really helps nut out the specifics of why we like a particular piece of clothing/style to make a really specific curation of what we want. Being intentional and doing things with precision in life is something I value, so being able to do that with my wardrobe is amazing. I also love Pinterest and think it’s a perfect tool to use alongside your videos! Thank you for bringing fashion to life and making it so fun! Your perspective is so refreshing and practical! I’m glad to have found someone with a passion for fashion, attention to detail and the ability to think outside the box and create something new 🩷
I got 🌸🌙☀️. It helps to know that every style root encapsulates a spectrum of aesthetics. Before watching this video I got stuck on not fitting exactly into either moon or sun. Definitely had more of the ethereal and bright vibes going on, and not the dark and bold sides of the style roots. Thank you for this amazing video!❤
I love that you're happy to admit your initial style roots weren't accurate, I thought I was mushroom, mountain and sun until your video about being sun not fire, it made me really think, the mushroom part was a projection of who I thought I should be not who I am, I love mixing sporty with corporate styles with a quirky detail, my favourite outfits are a mix of sun, mountain and stone (not mushroom). Thank you so much for coming up with your system you have no idea how much its helped me in my personal style journey!!!
This is super useful! What I got: 1st root: Most probably Moon, in a historical/vampire/Tudor way, lots of black, celestial motifs, black lace, black velvet, pearls etc 2nd root: I think it's probably Mushroom, in a dark jeans, lush cardigans kind of way, lots of brown, navy, dark green, turtlenecks, classic low heeled shoes, soft belted trench coats. Maybe a bit of 60s academic style (like the chic outfits Anya Taylor Joy wears in The Queen's Gambit). I thought it could be Mountain but I don't like tailoring that much and my lifestyle it's too casual for Mountain. 3rd root: This was the hardest, but I think it's probably Fire, even though sometimes it feels too sexy for me. I love red, velvet, corsetry, low necklines and a bit of bodycon. But I also love Parisan style, but in a sexier way, more akin to the style Jeanne Damas and Rouge has (imo the Rouge brand could be Mushroom + Fire + Flower). The other one I thought could be my 3rd root was Flower, but more in a love of pink, vintage and feminine details, florals, than in an ingenue cutesy kawaii way. Maybe Flower is my 4th root!
I’m INFJ, and I’m very “at home” with an eclectic wardrobe. For work, I prefer solid color pants, a printed top, and a solid color blazer or cardigan. The idea I’d the top can be mixed and matched with other things to maximize my options.
I am 100% 🍄🏔️🪨! I think the one thing I’ve realised about myself is that I really adore my work clothes and take pride in feeling all put together when I go to work. I’ve always had the opposite effect when I’m going out however. A lot of people (including me) have a very distinct work vs non-work wardrobe and I struggled to like the way I looked in casual clothes. I just felt so disheveled and kept wanting to wear my tailored pants, shirts and knit sweaters out, but didn’t want to seem like there wasn’t any difference between my workwear and my outside clothes. Realising that my top roots were centred around my attraction to feeling put together, timeless, classic, tailored, and tonal outfits really changed the way I dress myself casually. I think utilising my second root, which is mountain, more when I’m at work and really embodying that stronger, more tailored and structured style, and when I’m out and about, bringing forth that mushroom and stone with more delicate pieces and lighter fabrics like linen and neutral coloured casual pieces to still look put together is a lot more representative of who I am!
This helped a lot narrow down into what I like seeing other people in (sun, stone type looks), vs what is actually in my waredrobe that I enjoy wearing! Found out I have more Earth, Moon, and Flower influences for the items I feel the most "me" in. This is so cool!!
When I watched your Style Roots video, I had a hard time identifying mine. Today, when I watched your Style Streams video and worked through the exercise, I ended up with Earth, Stone and Flower. It made sense to me, now that I thought about my actual wardrobe and what I love in it. Thanks!
Thank you! This is the first time I feel like I understand how I could use your system - outside of pinterest. Mostly Sun, Fire secondary and Moon sort of an "accent". If I was building a new wardrobe and I imagine I woke up with only a jogging suit, I could build two seasonal capsule wardrobes around these three "roots" or "streams" over a weekend and not strictly need anything new for a year.
Going through the exercise was so helpful, but going through your created style root boards on Pinterest helped me even more! Doing that helped me establish some things that were really important: 1) certain style streams / combinations that I love in theory, would not look as great on me in person; I was actually able to identify outfits I pinned myself and think, “OH, I do like this, but I think it would look a little stiff,” as an example; 2) it helped me find the combination that absolutely sparks joy-Mountain x Stone x Sun-which really encapsulated a look I hadn’t been able to put together before. It was so validating to see my dream look come all together. So thank you so much! This video and this theory is so, so helpful, especially when combined with Kibbe and essences! Helps me realize why certain combinations that I love, don’t actually look as good.
Thanks so much for this exercise! I think I just went through a similar journey to yours. I've been discounting how much ☀influence is in there! Moon🌙: poetic extravagance, dark, soulful, gothic, moody, edgy, dramatic, royal, impactful, powerful, dynamic Sun ☀: quirky, playful, alternative, unexpected, smart, intriguing, creative Fire🔥: sensual, romantic, elegant, seductive, compelling, provocative Flower🌸: movement, detailed, luminous, intuitive I'd say a feminine version of moon is my home base. I alternate between fire and flower elements depending on my mood, but I didn't realize how much the juxtaposition between moon and sun matters to me. I need to hold that playful unexpectedness even in my darkest, edgiest outfits to feel like myself.
i was just looking at the aesthetic wiki yesterday trying to sort out some keywords & elements i could use to shop, so this is great timing! i tried your earlier videos on finding your style roots, but this seems much more encompassing and useful (at least for how my brain needs things explained). my style roots are earth, flower, and mushroom. earth is truly my foundation. i especially like the words natural and effortless. i want natural fibers that are easy to take care of - this interpretation has little to do with my final appearance, but everything to do with how i actually shop for clothes. i always check fiber content & washing guides first. i'm also earth in that i want getting dressed to feel effortless, and to give off an effortless, relaxed, natural vibe. i want design elements that are nature-based and studious (i prefer this word to the more strict-sounding academic). this is like the "cabincore" aesthetic that i like. nature-based design elements lead me to my second style root: flower. whimsical, rounded, esp floral details. flowing elements like butterfly sleeves & twirly skirts. soft fabrics, soft draping. also vintage inspired - for me, i'm esp drawn to late 1930s & early 1940s. this is like the "cottagecore" aesthetic i'm drawn toward. studious ties into my third style root: mushroom. i want a curated closet of simple, modest pieces that are balanced & timeless. i see this as the "academia" aesthetic. (mountain is more button downs, suspenders, ties, pencil skirts... i don't like that at all. i'm much more a mock-turtleneck & well-fitting trousers, simple & unfussy sort of person. stuffy academic vs simply studious.) yesterday, i came up with the 3 aesthetics i most vibed with, but i didn't know how to tie it all together. today, i see how the three relate and overlap. i love that flowers & mushrooms come from the earth. i see a lot of cohesion here (which was one of my original words!) and this was a really nice, quick exercise. i'm on a clothes-buying-ban until july, but am looking forward to using this tool to shop! thanks for sharing! :)
🍄🔥🏔 here! I find that Mushroom is the baseline that keeps my style minimal, delicate, and elevated when paired with bolder roots of Fire and Mountain. So although I resonate with the sensuality of Fire and the polished-ness of Mountain, my style roots are less bold and much more subdued. I think of my style as a minimal, romantic, sensual elegance :) I also went through a style root change/realization because used to think I had a flower root since I resonate with the words delicate, light, and feminine, but I realize I see these translate more towards mushroom in my looks as a minimal and timeless softness rather than youthful girly details of flower! Thanks Ellie-Jean for this system! It's really helped me make better shopping decisions because now when I like/admire a piece I can recognize whether or not it matches my roots and if it will bring me closer to the effect that I am trying to create. If not, I allow myself to simply admire it and put it down :)
This was such a powerful exercise Ellie! I did it a couple days ago and I can’t stop thinking about the style roots! I found out I’m mushroom, earth and fire! :)
This just helped me realize that my third style root is really earth instead of stone. I’m 🍄🌸🌎 and your Pinterest board of 🍄🌎🌸 actually has the exact same sweater I’m wearing in my profile pic here! Eagerly awaiting the 🍄🌸 Pinterest boards!
Hi! Just wanna say thank you for creating the Style Roots. This has provided so much clarity regarding my clothing preferences and has helped me unearth my own personal style. For the longest time there have been certain factors that have stunted/inhibited my authentic style. One of which is other people/relatives telling me how I ought to dress and the other is religion. My clothing was also often influenced by how I think people would treat me if I wore a certain outfit (if that makes any sense). However, just sitting down and noting my style priorities/streams which are Flower 🌸 Fire 🔥and Sun 🌞 and analyzing my current wardrobe, I realize that most of my pieces already fit those! Which means it's just getting more pieces that fit my style priorities/streams In the past couple of months, I've been slowly but surely building MY wardrobe amd I love how it's looking so far ✨ Honestly, I feel genuinely great in my clothes now but most importantly I feel like I'm myself. Thank you again for creating this amazing system 💖
I got 🍄🔥🌑 and i think a dash of🌞. I divided the words into 5 categories: vibe, structure, fabric, details and colours, to see how exactly I wanted to use them in my style.
After watching the other style roots videos and now this one I'm definitely mostly mushroom- top terms being: classic, sophisticated, put together, high quality and flower- top terms being: feminine, delicate, and graceful. but doing these streams made me realize i'm also equal parts mountain, sun, and fire: I had three words from each category that made it on to my list- all basically focusing on being fun and expensive- it's so interesting to see it all written out and to see how there's 2 equally big roots and 3 equally sized smaller ones.
all of your style roots videos were such a journey to me and along with other style systems really helped me sort out my wardrobe of dreams! it is a work in progress but it’s the process that matters. for the longest time i though i was stone primarily but i think that’s just because im a student and stone driven outfits are convenient for that :’D i figured out that im Earth first and Moon & Sun second (with probably a fistful of stones in there). i feel the need to look powerful in an out of place intimidating way, not in a business executive way. i have an outdoorsy summer goth streak. also i look bomb in 70s silhouettes as a flamboyant natural. my earth+moon&sun staple outfit is a long brown coat with flaps up to my knees, a grass green beret, simple black mom jeans, docs, a shirt from some theatre/music festival, some esoteric jewelry and accented lowkey but colorful makeup. my favorite show (dark) and movie (annihilation) represent all of that rather well i must say. im really looking forward to yoir updates on style roots pinterest boards!!
I’m Sun, Moon and Fire! This is so much more helpful than aesthetics, as I found I loved a little bit of everything. From Whimsigoth, to Cottagcore to Romantic Goth. This is such an amazing concept ❤❤
Wow, I cannot tell you how this video has just opened my eyes. I’ve been really struggling to embrace the powerful aspect of myself (Mountain) because I’ve been thinking and told by a lot of influencers, that I need to be only flower or fire in personality and style to be attractive to the kind of guy I, personally, really want. I just realized that I’m kind of caging myself in by not embracing this and trying to ignore one of the most core aspects of myself For the stage of life that I’m in right now, my style roots are Mountain, Moon (celestial moon), and Flower (still, because it is a part of me). Being powerful, strong, intelligent, exuberant and a tiny bit sweet are most important to me and I’ve been throwing a lot of that away while on my journey towards womanhood
Love this video!!! I think I finally confirmed my style roots, your Pinterest board helped, I already had some of those pics in my own boards. They are: Fire 1. Romantic 2. Sassy 3. Sexy 4. Red 5. Velvet 6. Black 7. V cut 8. Bold 9. Edgy Mushroom 1. Classic 2. Elegant 3. Sophisticated 4. Stylish 5. Nautical 6. Old money 7. Parisian 8. Preppy Mountain 1. Tailored 2. Mature 3. Old Hollywood 4. Striking Others Casual - earth Boho chic - earth Ethereal - moon
Your style roots system has been so immensely helpful for both me and all family members/friends I’ve showed it to! really helps to narrow down ans be more authentic and conscious about the wardrobe and not fall into trends we don’t really like ❤️ (also so helpful with the pinterest combo roots boards)! ☺️ really the best type of style test I’ve come across online. Xxx thank you Ellie-Jean!
Wow! I took the quiz in your website, and got Mushroom, Mountain, Stone. Those felt very strong, but after watching this and truly doing the exercise (properly! I paused the vid) I ended up different. Mushroom, Earth, Sun or Flower. I know my words are very true so I’ll have to think about this.
I took the quiz from your earlier video a couple times and kept getting different answers with a rotation of about five of the eight roots. I found this exercise much more intuitive, and in the end, I think my roots are 🌸🌎☀️. I like cute, feminine clothes, but I prefer them in an earthier/cooler-toned colour palette. I also like some practicality/rusticity in my wardrobe (boots, denim, plaid, textured knits). I think sun peeks through in the odd fun/quirky detail or even in the juxtaposition of flower and earth elements.
Love this video. Ever since the style roots video I knew my style roots were moon, stone and a third thing that I couldn't really figure out. The style streams have showed me that it's earth.
OMG i love your take on style, the last 5 years I ve been so conflicted about my style cuz it seemed the will never get along, but they actually will 😭❤️ my top 3 are FLOWER MOON AND SUN
I was a little bit lost in these lists but I made well the first one and when I took a look in my wardrobe I understood what's missing - so thank you! My style roots are a mix of moon and flower with a pinch of fire. Very useful exercise! ❤
Well, I definitely have sun and moon roots. I've come up with three lists so far: 1: flamboyant, dramatic, bold, imposing 2: interesting, creative, fun, exciting, adventurous, scrappy, impish, strange 3: ethereal, dreamlike, fantastical fey, Neverland
I’m exactly the same- after this vid I finally decided on my third being flower. I only really considered it when I looked at which facial/body features I had that I wanted to amplify, and if you (like myself) want to occasionally give off a pixie-ish impression, then maybe go with flower as well.
I am both sun and moon too and have lots of the same words! It’s funny because moon and sun feel like opposites but they go together well for me. I probably would pick mountain as my third for more formal situations and stone for more casual.
This was so helpful First Root: I like natural colors and textures in my clothing I also like the fun, flowy, approachable aspect of it as well as somewhat spontaneous . Honestly just think hobbits from lord of the rings as well as forest witch. So probably earth. Second Root: I like to be calm and collected, I need outfits to be put together and (somewhat) professional to feel right. I feel like I lean more into the structured side during the winter and then just textures and other elements in the summer. My guess is mountain. Third Root: Mythical, ethereal, flowy, delicate, detailed are all things I really enjoy adding to my outfits. I typically dress more femme (especially in the summer) and I like the tiny delicate details of things but only in small amounts. I also like things to be fun and carefree (in small amounts). I think probably flower but maybe sun?
I'm glad she touched on who you REALLY are because I also made the mistake of writing down who I WANT to be who I may in fact never be :( definitely gonna spend a lot of time with this
Sophisticated, mysterious and gentle. I realise there are certain items in my wardrobe I want to get rid of now! And need to add slightly innocent/aloof items like cute shoes and earthy cardigans to go with my black bodycons and pencil skirts
thinking about having a main style root and having the other two as branches really helped me. moon has always jumped out as being almost exactly my style to the point where it was hard to find a good fit with anything else. from moon though, i’ve found that if i want to lean more feminine i also have a fire root and if i want to lean more casual, i look to stone. moon is still always the base, but drawing from the other two adds a level of depth
Awesome! I have the exact same style root combination. I add some stone or fire elements depending on the occasion, but moon is definitely my main style root.
Had to pause because cooking breakfast is not conducive to this exercise. Lol I look forward to on completing later today. But for now just wanted to say you look amazing! 🔥 Great advertising for your channel and hair products! 💛✨
Your videos really help me a lot! Right now my style is changing because my life is changing and I'm actively working on it. In my youth I was a classic emo/punk girl, now I wear a lot of leggings and baggie shirts due to my job. But slowly it goes in the direction of chic, put together with a bit of senual aspects. I would love a video where you tell us about yourself. How your path to fashion was, what exactly you're doing right now, etc. Thanks for your efforts! 🤍🤍🤍
Spending time on these exercises gave me so much clarity I developed my own personal style roots. At first I was struggling a bit with resonating with elements from all of your style roots, so I created my own categories based on how I tend to intuitively see style elements grouped together-- I called them Marshmallow, Luminary, Venus, and Gardener (and these are just what I'm drawn to) * Mαɾʂԋɱαʅʅσɯ - soft, sweet, but no-nonsense, understated, comfortable, relaxed, neutrals-- lots of ivories, creams, beiges, browns and soft black-- never anything sharp-- rounded and chunky textures, some contrast, effortless elegance created through materials and details, simple lines, modest, quiet, a bit reserved/shy/innocent/simple * 𝔏𝔲𝔪𝔦𝔫𝔞𝔯𝔶 - bright warm colors (saffron, orange, carnelian, hot pink, tomato red) plus neutrals, pastels and soft metallics-- silvery pastel colors of the moon and bright golden colors of the sun-- hints of sparkle/glitter, a touch of the unexpected, fun, artistic, a touch of avante-garde here and there, playful, joyful, ethereal, mysterious and bubbly by turns, cyclical like the moon and stars, day and night, ancient goddess, mystical wisdom, crystal aura, divine, glowing, unapologetic, mischievous like a fairy queen * 𝓥𝓮𝓷𝓾𝓼 - the goddess here finds incarnation as the staid family matriarch - strong, confident feminine, mature or timeless, old-for-your-age, and then gracefully ageless, lightly structured, defined waist, flowing lines, classic, luxurious, the starlet grown up, self-possessed, sensual, independent, easy confidence, down-to-earth, natural beauty, disarming, genuine, high quality but simple materials and accessories, no branding, experienced. * 𝔾𝕒𝕣𝕕𝕖𝕟𝕖𝕣 - rougher and simpler textures, mis-matched, eclectic, grandma style, thrifted clothes and hand-me-downs, earthy, rugged, linen, tweed, knits and cotton, but with floral inspiration, lived-in, down-home, patterns and ditsies, cottage core and bohemian, hand crafted, homemade, down for anything, weekend warrior, a little flour or paint on the nose, vintage aprons, messy-hair-don't-care, braids and top-knots or pixie cut, dyed-my-own-hair-on-a-whim, all the colors, maximalism, trinkets, baubles and tchotchkes, antiques, the childlike indulgence of children and the elderly Want to see what all this looks like together? thisbeautifulsound.tumblr.com/ Thank you for helping me label my style inspirations :) out of YOUR style roots, Mushroom is definitely my primary!
This is great! And really helped me put my style influences into words. I realised that my dominant root is Flower (Youthful, vintage, feminine, Parisian - though I put preppy into this as well as for me I love the cute tennis-style skirts and dresses which seem so feminine and youthful to me), followed by Mushroom (Sophisticated, clean, preppy again in a more structured mature way) and Moon (Dark, fall/Autumn/Jewel tones with a touch of solestial and mysterious).
Love this system. I'm finding that, like all forms of artistic expression, style helps us understand ourselves more deeply. We make our choices to express ourselves and then we can reflect back on why and how they came to be. I am coming into seeking my style rather late in life, here, but it's been a helpful exercise nonetheless. The last segment was really helpful: if we have a hard time defining ourselves because we have always been somewhat eclectic (or, in my case, have spent our lives trying to be all things to all people), defining what we are *not* is a great place to start. I finally had to look at these roots and decide on which words I am definitely not, which ones I am sometimes, and which ones I tend to gravitate to because they draw me on a deeper level. So interesting to see how your groupings encapsulate a huge range of expressions so neatly to help us understand how it relates to our personal aestetic. Really well done!!!
My style roots are natural and flower! I tend to lean a little mushroom during the colder months, but I'm a huge fan of cute, feminine looks that are light and flowy.
Thank you for the video. The streams exercise helped make sense what I am trying to express with my clothes. I have similar style roots as yourself (mostly flower and mushroom, with a touch of sun) I love to wear vintage inspired clothes ( so I don't mind being different in a room of people) without being too costumey.
This video was so incredibly helpful!! At first I thought none of the style roots quite fit, but reflecting on my word choices made me realize exactly what I prioritize in my personal style and how I view myself. Now I know I’m more in line with mushroom, sun, and earth!!
Your style streams theory has helped me so much in figuring out my style. I've combined it with Allison Borenstein's 3-word theory. Your streams helped my find and refine my words. For example my three words are Casual, Minimalist, and Soft. I have a stream for each word: Casual (Stone), Minimalist (Mushroom), and Soft (Flower)
I find style roots really fun to delve into. I feel that over the last year or so my style has shifted a bit. It’s interesting that the shapes I choose are very influenced by simplicity (mushroom?) tailored details, subtle sophistication, basic staples, clean lines & minimalism - the textures and colours I feel are very Earth, matte, wool, linen - grounded colours, neutrals and natural greens and blues (no vibrant pops of red or neons, very soft) - I never would have thought but recently I’m finding flower influencing my style. It may be a blouse from sezane, the style is simple, classic button down. The texture is cotton, but it has a worn in colour and texture, the denim colour feels down to Earth and casual mixes with formal. The details have a slight rouching at the the cuffs, a frill at the neck that is femenine mixed with the masculine shirt. It creates a very mushroom, flower, Earth clothing item. Very interesting. I think flower is the influence I can take or leave in my style and is the influence that I never like to dominate. But definitely there which is interesting 🤗
Interesting and helpful! When I first heard about your style roots, I quickly felt like earth and mushroom were definitely two of mine, but I couldn't really settle on a third. I'm sure that my 16 year old daughter's are sun, stone, and flower. Working through this exercise though, I actually do think stone is one of mine, too, I just didn't recognize it because many of the stone examples you've shown in the past (here on TH-cam and on Pinterest) look very much like clothes my daughter would wear - baggy jeans, graphic tee's, converse's, baggy sweatshirts - and not at all like things I'd wear. But the list I put together helped me consider what stone looks like for 40-year-old me: henley thermals, mid-rise straight jeans, thin v-neck t's, etc.
I made a list of three groupings, but based on your list two of them are both 'flower' . I think I only have the two roots, mushroom and flower. It's in keeping with my conclusions from other style systems (soft classic, only able to pinpoint my essences to "mostly classic but perhaps some ingenue"). i would like to second other comments about the importance of accessories and would love a video from you about accessorizing for the style roots, rather than the main outfits!!
Moon Shroom 😂 Explains a lot of my wardrobe malfunctions. For some reason I keep pushing myself toward Sun or Fire even though I always end up unhappy with those vibes stylistically. So the self-work is definitely a real struggle.
❤LOVE your videos! You have been super helpful in my ability to narrow down what I like about an article or clothing and what attracts me to it. This video helped me narrow down my style roots and not be on the fence about them, I was able to realize what attracted me to certain clothing, and why I don’t actually wear some of my favourite pieces (because they are not my core style root). I can now make appropriate alterations to my wardrobe to allow me to wear the pieces I love in a way that is more me!
This was so helpfu!, It finally clicked why i I dont feel totally me in some of my outfits. 🍄🌱🌸 for me with a hint of 🌚. I feel so seen after looking at your Pinterest ideas for each style root too. 💕 thank you!
I just re-did the quiz and the exercises (properly) and I am not my original at all! Originally , I got Moon (wanted to be but not really me 😞) and Stone; I could not find a third for the life of me. Turns out I'm Mountain, still Stone, and Sun (wanted to be 🔥). I'm fine with this as it feels way more authentic.
I am mostly mountain mushroom and moon, but with just a hint of flower only in the nature or silhouette of the fabrics! So blazers in neutral mostly dark colours, but has to be flowy and loose! So no cropped stiff army blazers. 😅 Shirts with a collar in neutral colours but in silks and loose and not too much going on in the shirt! This is cool!
I am a huge fan of your system Style Roots! Outstanding! I am sure mine are: Moon 🌙 - deep dark and cool colours! Stone 🥔 - I love feeling comfortable, minimal and effortless style Flower🌷- feminine, girly with tiny bit of fire 🔥 (lace, silk, satin farbic) Hoping to see some inspiration about moon, stone, flower, fire in your next videos! My Kibbe probably Soft Natural 🤔 Warm greetings 🤗
This was really helpful at narrowing mine down. My roots are mushroom, mountain flower. ❤The academic aesthetic is one I love but as a deep winter it's not the earth natural way but more in the classic professional a bit vintage and feminine way.
Watched this again today because I was not sure if I got my style roots right last time (moon, stone, fire) and this time I was able to come up with more/right words and ended up with Mountain, Mushroom and Stone. I am sure it will keep evolving and I will come back to this again in some time but for now, we will keep it that.
This made me realize that all my life I have trying to be Sun instead of embracing that I’m Mountain. I’m most comfortable with my Fire + Moon but I was def using Sun as a protective shield
I really enjoyed this and ended up fairly close to my style roots. What helped me the most was/is the Pinterest boards that you're working on. It was so intuitive to flip through them (the ones that are closest to my style are already complete, so it worked for me) and narrow down what's really me versus what I wouldn't wear. It would be fun to have a general label for each of the 56 combinations. I'm not sure that it's necessary; it would just be fun.
Also, do you intend to keep going with your 56 style root Pinterest boards project? I know it's a daunting prospect but I'm dyyyying to see your other interpretations of the root mixes!
@@elliejeanroyden hi! Do you think kibble body types and their qualities help determine style roots? I’m kibble soft natural so Earth makes sense, but also there’s romantic undercurrent- so fire? :)
Been trying to help a friend of mine with her style and this video is so perfect I had to share! I think something like this is much easier to understand and categorize than just going off of inspo pictures you find online, that you may like but dont really fit your vibe.
So I’m in my 30’s but when I look back I can see my style roots have shown up in every evolution of my style. Mine are 🌙🔥🌏 in that order. Moon: Dark colours, dark florals, velvet, lace, leather, edgy, celestial & goth. Fire: open necklines, sensual & romantic styles, plums, wines and red shades, glamorous & leopard print. Earth: Flowy maxi skirts, distressed denim, warm browns, olive green, natural fibres, bell and bishop sleeves, chunky knit cardigans & shawls.
I think I’m mostly 🍄🌙 with a touch of 🌸 (more in the sense of detailed, vintage, flowing). I was tempted to say Earth (as I had a lot of academia/academic related words) but I think what appeals to me are the elements that would be covered by mushroom and moon. My two main pinterest fashion boards are academia and urban witch so 🍄🌙 are very on point 😆
After getting your style package and doing this exercise I figured out that I actually just want to look like a cross section between an off duty spy, a lone wolf isolated space ranger on a lunch break, soft tactical coastal Grandma!
Thanks to your videos I'm discovering a new world ❤ finally I know that I was not satisfied with clothes because I was not looking for the right shapes/matetials for my bodies. And as you said in one of your videos I'm not so focused in weight as before because the body tipe remains the same. Also, it's interesting to reflect about your Essence, your personal words. It's an introspective and fun journey.
I am a soft dramatic with fire, flower, and mountain as my roots in that order! Now I just need to find my colors (I’m a black girl so it’s a bit of a struggle) I feel like such a powerhouse now thank you.
I loved the exercise! I have earth and flower for sure, but for the 3rd one I'm split between sun and moon. I think irl I gravitate more towards sun, but I really admire moon outfits.
for me it's Sun, Mushroom, Stone and a little touch of Flower! categorizing them is the hardest part for me, because some of them can be in multiple style roots depending on the interpretations. Anyway, here are my words Sun: Creative, Confident, Inspirational, Individuality, Quirky, Whimsical, Weird, Bold, Textured, Patterns, Handmade Mushroom: Timeless, Simple, Understated, Comfortable, Lightweight, Plain, Calming Stone: Dependable, Free, Versatile, Practical, Easy-Breezy, Casual Flower: Bright, Likable, Cheerful, Youthful, Tomboy with Feminine side
My first two roots are definitely Mushroom and Flower, third one I wasn’t sure about- like you I thought it might be fire at first but now I think it’s probably Earth and that feels so much better xx 🍄🌺🌍
I Love your StyleRoots Series. I think I´m a Mountain, Earth, Moon...in this line. And I think my wardrope match this descriptions. But I´m curious to see more recommendations from you. ❣❣❣❣❣❣

My husband and I just watched this together and had a really interesting conversation about how to identify your style roots from a masculine perspective versus a feminine one. We both agree that your style root system feels so much more expansive and unlimited, than going the traditional aesthetics route. Great video!
That’s so great to hear! I do have some style roots boards for men on my Pinterest!!
@@elliejeanroyden can you please tell me where I can find your Pinterest or link it for me please 🙏 thank you ❤
@@leiacalderon2082 just search body and style . You'll find her.
it would be cool to see a vid on what a capsule wardrobe would look like for each style root- or even how they differ in what would be necessary
This!
I agree. I would love to see that. I struggle with mine.
I agree ! ^-^
Agree
Something that I think gets overlooked when it comes to representing one's personal style is the presence of jewelry and accessories. Someone can wear a totally black outfit and then add a necklace and change the tone of the whole look.
While looking through my wardrobe to prepare list, I thought the same thing!
That’s how I do it anyway. I tend to wear mushroom and earth style clothes and throw on quirky dangling earrings for a touch of sun
Because during the warmer seasons I am 🍄🗿🌍 while in the colder seasons because I am also working a lot more 🌍 changes to 🗻
Oh great point!
Me too. I think I only tend to gravitate towards flowery elements in summer clothing.
It’s wild to me that we both changed our style roots from
🌸🍄🔥 to 🌸🍄☀️ at around the same time. Also we’re both ENFPs and soft classics. And we both have classic and ingenue in our essence blends. This is like my dream yt channel bc all of your personal examples apply to me perfectly lol
Omg I'm an enfp !!!
@@spacebar9733 out of curiosity, what are your style roots?
@@maddiemae73 I have a certain style for each season tbh so mushroom might trade with moon in colder weather sometimes.
From most to least:
Flower. Mushroom. Sun.
Less but still sometimes: Moon. Fire. Earth
I put that comment before I watched the whole video but I realize we have the same roots !! Maybe you're onto smth!!
@@spacebar9733 woahhh that’s so interesting! I also pull from earth sometimes too
@@maddiemae73i'm an enfp too! I'm FN and 🌸🪨🌱
I'm a very masculine woman (as in I wear "men's clothes") and this is nice for helping me articulate that a bit more.
And looking back at photos of myself that were taken today I can’t help but think, “Wow, this feels like ME.” ❤
WOW this is exactly me! Mostly stone, earth, and mushroom with hints of sun here and there!
This is me as well! I feel like I haven’t seen a ton of great examples of this combo. Do you have any specific style inspirations?
I've even been able to take one step further and define how I want to use style roots:
In my silhouette/shapes of my clothes: mountain and fire (powerful, professional, classy and sexy/magnetic and romantic)
In the colors and patterns: sun (bright, fun, colorful, original, different)
In the materials: earth (natural (cotton, linen)) and comfortable
😱😱😱😱😱 This makes so much sense!!!!
After considering 🍄 and 🪨, I’m back to my original three: 🌸☀️🌎
It was so helpful to have you distinguish earth as academic, bohemian, and 70s.
@@ChyeallaMcBride Yes! Exactly. 💜
What I got:
1st root: Most probably Moon, in a historical/vampire/Tudor way, lots of black, celestial motifs, black lace, black velvet, pearls etc
2nd root: I think it's probably Mushroom, in a dark jeans, lush cardigans kind of way, lots of brown, navy, dark green, turtlenecks, classic low heeled shoes, soft belted trench coats.
Ellie Jean made me think deeply about my personal style. It helped me figure out new dimensions of my personality.
Thank you for that. ❤
Thanks so much for this exercise! I think I just went through a similar journey to yours. I've been discounting how much ☀influence is in there!
Moon🌙: poetic extravagance, dark, soulful, gothic, moody, edgy, dramatic, royal, impactful, powerful, dynamic
Sun ☀: quirky, playful, alternative, unexpected, smart, intriguing, creative
Fire🔥: sensual, romantic, elegant, seductive, compelling, provocative
Flower🌸: movement, detailed, luminous, intuitive
I'd say a feminine version of moon is my home base.
(mountain is more button downs, suspenders, ties, pencil skirts... i don't like that at all. i'm much more a mock-turtleneck & well-fitting trousers, simple & unfussy sort of person. stuffy academic vs simply studious.)
yesterday, i came up with the 3 aesthetics i most vibed with, but i didn't know how to tie it all together. today, i see how the three relate and overlap. i love that flowers & mushrooms come from the earth. i see a lot of cohesion here (which was one of my original words!) and this was a really nice, quick exercise. i'm on a clothes-buying-ban until july, but am looking forward to using this tool to shop! thanks for sharing! :)
🍄🔥🏔 here! I find that Mushroom is the baseline that keeps my style minimal, delicate, and elevated when paired with bolder roots of Fire and Mountain. So although I resonate with the sensuality of Fire and the polished-ness of Mountain, my style roots are less bold and much more subdued. I think of my style as a minimal, romantic, sensual elegance :)
I also went through a style root change/realization because used to think I had a flower root since I resonate with the words delicate, light, and feminine, but I realize I see these translate more towards mushroom in my looks as a minimal and timeless softness rather than youthful girly details of flower!
Which means it's just getting more pieces that fit my style priorities/streams In the past couple of months, I've been slowly but surely building MY wardrobe amd I love how it's looking so far ✨
Honestly, I feel genuinely great in my clothes now but most importantly I feel like I'm myself. Thank you again for creating this amazing system 💖
I got 🍄🔥🌑 and i think a dash of🌞. I divided the words into 5 categories: vibe, structure, fabric, details and colours, to see how exactly I wanted to use them in my style.
After watching the other style roots videos and now this one I'm definitely mostly mushroom- top terms being: classic, sophisticated, put together, high quality and flower- top terms being: feminine, delicate, and graceful. but doing these streams made me realize i'm also equal parts mountain, sun, and fire: I had three words from each category that made it on to my list- all basically focusing on being fun and expensive- it's so interesting to see it all written out and to see how there's 2 equally big roots and 3 equally sized smaller ones.
all of your style roots videos were such a journey to me and along with other style systems really helped me sort out my wardrobe of dreams! it is a work in progress but it’s the process that matters.
for the longest time i though i was stone primarily but i think that’s just because im a student and stone driven outfits are convenient for that :’D
i figured out that im Earth first and Moon & Sun second (with probably a fistful of stones in there). i feel the need to look powerful in an out of place intimidating way, not in a business executive way. i have an outdoorsy summer goth streak. also i look bomb in 70s silhouettes as a flamboyant natural. my earth+moon&sun staple outfit is a long brown coat with flaps up to my knees, a grass green beret, simple black mom jeans, docs, a shirt from some theatre/music festival, some esoteric jewelry and accented lowkey but colorful makeup. my favorite show (dark) and movie (annihilation) represent all of that rather well i must say. im really looking forward to yoir updates on style roots pinterest boards!!
I just realized that I’m kind of caging myself in by not embracing this and trying to ignore one of the most core aspects of myself
For the stage of life that I’m in right now, my style roots are Mountain, Moon (celestial moon), and Flower (still, because it is a part of me). Being powerful, strong, intelligent, exuberant and a tiny bit sweet are most important to me and I’ve been throwing a lot of that away while on my journey towards womanhood

The intro and vibe of the video is AMAZING! Truly loved the style and topic of this video ❤
Neutral, sophisticated (mushroom) mixed with organic (earth) & sensual (fire). The key word exercise was surpassingly useful 😊
Thanks for clarifying that the 'why' is so important! For example, Princess can be 🌸or ☀️
Well, I definitely have sun and moon roots. I've come up with three lists so far:
1: flamboyant, dramatic, bold, imposing
2: interesting, creative, fun, exciting, adventurous, scrappy, impish, strange
3: ethereal, dreamlike, fantastical fey, Neverland
I’m exactly the same- after this vid I finally decided on my third being flower. I only really considered it when I looked at which facial/body features I had that I wanted to amplify, and if you (like myself) want to occasionally give off a pixie-ish impression, then maybe go with flower as well.
I am both sun and moon too and have lots of the same words! It’s funny because moon and sun feel like opposites but they go together well for me. I probably would pick mountain as my third for more formal situations and stone for more casual.
This was so helpful
First Root: I like natural colors and textures in my clothing I also like the fun, flowy, approachable aspect of it as well as somewhat spontaneous .
Your last description screams flower to me 😊
I'm glad she touched on who you REALLY are because I also made the mistake of writing down who I WANT to be who I may in fact never be :( definitely gonna spend a lot of time with this
I think who you want to be is okay as long as it’s like you at your BEST and truest self - it’s not a whim, but the best reflection of you!
Do you like Zadig & Voltaire?
@@InkMystique i’ve never bought anything from them, but some of their stuff looks cool!
@@inkietears I haven’t bought anything either, because it’s too expensive, but I often use their stuff as inspiration!
Had to pause because cooking breakfast is not conducive to this exercise. Lol I look forward to on completing later today.
But for now just wanted to say you look amazing! 🔥 Great advertising for your channel and hair products! 💛✨
This is fantastic! You just get better and better.
At first I was struggling a bit with resonating with elements from all of your style roots, so I created my own categories based on how I tend to intuitively see style elements grouped together-- I called them Marshmallow, Luminary, Venus, and Gardener (and these are just what I'm drawn to)
* Mαɾʂԋɱαʅʅσɯ - soft, sweet, but no-nonsense, understated, comfortable, relaxed, neutrals-- lots of ivories, creams, beiges, browns and soft black-- never anything sharp-- rounded and chunky textures, some contrast, effortless elegance created through materials and details, simple lines, modest, quiet, a bit reserved/shy/innocent/simple
* 𝔏𝔲𝔪𝔦𝔫𝔞𝔯𝔶 - bright warm colors (saffron, orange, carnelian, hot pink, tomato red) plus neutrals, pastels and soft metallics-- silvery pastel colors of the moon and bright golden colors of the sun-- hints of sparkle/glitter, a touch of the unexpected, fun, artistic, a touch of avante-garde here and there, playful, joyful, ethereal, mysterious and bubbly by turns, cyclical like the moon and stars, day and night, ancient goddess, mystical wisdom, crystal aura, divine, glowing, unapologetic, mischievous like a fairy queen
* 𝓥𝓮𝓷𝓾𝓼 - the goddess here finds incarnation as the staid family matriarch - strong, confident feminine, mature or timeless, old-for-your-age, and then gracefully ageless, lightly structured, defined waist, flowing lines, classic, luxurious, the starlet grown up, self-possessed, sensual, independent, easy confidence, down-to-earth, natural beauty, disarming, genuine, high quality but simple materials and accessories, no branding, experienced.
* 𝔾𝕒𝕣𝕕𝕖𝕟𝕖𝕣 - rougher and simpler textures, mis-matched, eclectic, grandma style, thrifted clothes and hand-me-downs, earthy, rugged, linen, tweed, knits and cotton, but with floral inspiration, lived-in, down-home, patterns and ditsies, cottage core and bohemian, hand crafted, homemade, down for anything, weekend warrior, a little flour or paint on the nose, vintage aprons, messy-hair-don't-care, braids and top-knots or pixie cut, dyed-my-own-hair-on-a-whim, all the colors, maximalism, trinkets, baubles and tchotchkes, antiques, the childlike indulgence of children and the elderly

Thank you for helping me label my style inspirations :) out of YOUR style roots, Mushroom is definitely my primary!
This is brilliant!! Coming up with the words first made finding my style roots simple 😊 Thank you x
I went from flower 🌸, mountain🏔️, fire🔥to flower🌸, mountain🏔️, earth 🌍. Thank you so much for helping me find my style! ❤
yayy, i wanted to confirm my style roots and they seem to be just what i expected! mountain, mushroom and moon :D
That’s so cool!!! I’m so glad this video helped you get a bit closer to your style ♥️♥️
I love the way you explain things …. In this case, you made it all so clear. SO HELPFUL!! Thank you.
This was so helpfu!, It finally clicked why i
I dont feel totally me in some of my outfits.
Thank you for this exercice! I've learnt so much about my style 😇
I am sure mine are:
Moon 🌙 - deep dark and cool colours!
Stone 🥔 - I love feeling comfortable, minimal and effortless style
Flower🌷- feminine, girly with tiny bit of fire 🔥 (lace, silk, satin farbic)
Hoping to see some inspiration about moon, stone, flower, fire in your next videos!
My Kibbe probably Soft Natural 🤔
Warm greetings 🤗
My main roots are mushroom and mountain. I think I flirt with aspects of fire, flower, or moon in little touches depending on my mood.
You have come up with an excellent system! I am very impressed. From this test I came out as Earth, Sun, and Flower. I think that's about right.
Yes I am!! I’ve just been finishing my essays for my degree this week so I haven’t had the time but getting back on it!
@@elliejeanroyden Is there a way we could send you our own boards for inspo? Might be quicker (or just way more confusing!)
@@elliejeanroyden yeees, can't wait
I always thought I was more 🌙🔥🌎 but after this exercise and some self-analysis I have arrived at 🌙🌞🍄!
Definitely 🍄🌸🌎 Thank you for this great video ❤
After getting your style package and doing this exercise I figured out that I actually just want to look like a cross section between an off duty spy, a lone wolf isolated space ranger on a lunch break, soft tactical coastal Grandma!
This was such a great exercise and I finally grasped the style roots beyond visuals! I ended up with a Mushroom, Sun, and Moon with a touch of Stone!
Anyway, here are my words
Sun: Creative, Confident, Inspirational, Individuality, Quirky, Whimsical, Weird, Bold, Textured, Patterns, Handmade
Mushroom: Timeless, Simple, Understated, Comfortable, Lightweight, Plain, Calming
Stone: Dependable, Free, Versatile, Practical, Easy-Breezy, Casual
Flower: Bright, Likable, Cheerful, Youthful, Tomboy with Feminine side
Very excited for more style roots pinterest boards!! Or a similar purchase to the colour guide!! 🎉
My first two roots are definitely Mushroom and Flower, third one I wasn’t sure about- like you I thought it might be fire at first but now I think it’s probably Earth and that feels so much better xx
🍄🌺🌍
1: flower
2: fire
3: mushroom
4: Mountain

Hi Ellie. Now I understand why I like your style. I am mushroom - flower - sun and hoping to be mountain.
