I love all of this - I just spent three months in creative/sartorial/existential crisis - exclusively wearing giant sweatpants and and Olsen twin tee shirt, the latter of which inspired me to look up older fashion photos of said twins, and monochromatic dressing was IT. I'm digging my way out of this funk by doing this thing
The chunky knit over floral or print maxi brings me back to 1990 something fierce. We also had the maxi skirt pairing too - back then it was hard pressed to come by tailored knits unless you were looking at that old lady cruise label that’s escaping my recollection. Everything was boxy and cropped too. I still have some of it is the funny part. I’ve officially cycled to being “vintage” at the ripe age of 49 😂 Edit* St. John. That’s the label. Thank you google aneurysm avoided
I’m 90 years old and I still have an image in my head from 1952 when I saw a wealthy woman in downtown Chicago, dressed in royal blue from her shoes, nylons, outfit, hat, gloves, purse, and have loved, and practiced your suggestion ever since then. I have been complemented many times how I always look put together and fashionable since then. I’ve never been wealthy and always on a limited budget. But shopping at Goodwill out of necessity for many years has kept me very fashionably in this way.
Thank you for sharing. I have pretty much every pièce of clothing in navy, and it’s so easy to dress. Some white here, some pink there, sometimes even orange or mint. Or just navy. Now I have a baby and almost no time to think about myself, but I am well prepared.
I used to work in Harrods. Sales assistant, well, you know. I've learnt to appreciate the monochromatic outfits from the "old money" clients. Rarely did they buy the matchy-matchy outfit, like top and bottom. The reason is that one will inevitably be used more than the other, and with time, the difference in colour is almost unavoidable. However, when you buy outfits in the same colour but different in texture, magic happens. Magic, which lasts decades..
@princess_urama two pieces made out of the same colour will look different with time, as one will age sooner than the other. When pieces are different in texture but same in colour, they will work together for longer.
The best thing I did for my fashion is stop trying to be the beige rich girl look that didn't make me happy, to wearing brightly coloured dresses everyday year round. Not only am I happy but I constantly get compliments on the most outrageous of coloured dresses than I ever did wearing what fashion magazines say are "in"
I like beige and related colours but they look awful on me because they wash me out. So I go for pale blues as an alternative natural colour - the sky is naturally many shades of blue.
In lockdown my sister & I did a week of bright monochromatic outfits, working through the colours of the rainbow. No-one was going to see us, just our partners & the photos we sent to each other. It was so much fun! Not only did it show each of us what actually we had in our wardrobes & how to wear some stuff that would hardly ever get worn, but for me it also gave me loads of confidence in how good monochrome could look on me, & I love it
no lockdown now and this is still an awsum idea! I have almost nothing in my 'wardrobe' but would love to have lots of color. I'm going to see if my mom will do this with me! love that you did it just for yourselves. Thanks for sharing!
I work in fashion and I'm not usually interested in fashion content. It's usually either the same ideas over and over or are completely unhelpful for anyone without a massive (totally unnecessary) shopping spree for the latest trend. This is SO refreshing. Well done! I hope you do more of this. 👌
It also appears to be accomodating to climate change weather, haha. Sweater over thin dress? Now, that we have 4 climate seasons a day, this fashion choice almost sounds logical, but the look is not everyone's favorite...
I don't care about makeup but I'm here for the fashion content! I love how you make it about general principles and being creative with what you have (rather than being about buying specific products). Happy to see you making more of this. :)
Totally agree. I'm doing less makeup out of necessity. I constantly get eczema on my eye lids, so I've stopped putting eye makeup on for a couple years now. I now find even a slick of mascara looking pretty odd on me! I'm doing a lot of red lips with no eye makeup - just brows maybe. It kind of works.
I'm not very "fashun", but what has brought my joy out in dressing lately is just wearing what makes me happy and smile. I'm an elementary school librarian and I've found that when I wear something fun and "out of the box", it also makes the kids happy. My most recent joyful outfit was on a theme day when I was wearing lots of Frida Kahlo accessories and wore a pair of red overalls (and also a flower crown). Can we make casually wearing flower crowns a thing? I felt awesome all day!
Hannah, I'd like to say *thank you* for including different body shapes and sizes in this video (diverse skin tones, too). I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer last year, and at the same time, I was also beginning perimenopause. I had a thyroidectomy in September, and in October I did a round of radiation therapy. I'm just about 44 years old and have been petite and thin my entire life, and then, BOOM, I began perimenopause AND had my thyroid removed...and my body really changed. I've gained 45 pounds in the eight or so months since my diagnoses, surgery, and treatment (and I'm only 5'4"!); I can say that when you become a much larger size in such a short period of time than the size you've always been, it's a whole new world to navigate--physically AND mentally. It's really great to see examples of people who are ACTUALLY plus size, looking chic as hell and totally gorgeous. Gives me a confidence boost. Excellent video. Edit: would love to see more of the same for different trends/seasons/etc.
I was also glad to see different body types and a few men. Inclusion is nice. I love flowing clothes. Gorgeous silky fabrics in beautiful colors. I think of it as the Opera Singer style. I love flowing fabrics on any size and shape. I think it is my thing. It makes me happy. It is stressful whenever we have to reinvent ourselves, or our style or lives. It if like going through adolescence again. During my first adolescence, I learned to love and honor a lot about myself. I had great self-confidence for years. A few years ago, I experienced some changes. I am currently reinventing myself, too. Ggeemmiinnii, I wish you every happiness reinvent yourself. I wish you a very illuminating personal Renaissance.
@@nancywhite3501 Oh, gosh. You are the sweetest. Thank you for your comment. Having a lil bit of a rough morning, but this made it brighter! I hope you have a lovely day 💕
@@ggeemmiinnii wow, you‘ve been put through the mill. But you don’t sound beaten at all. If you don’t mind me saying, you watching a fashion video says to me that you’re looking for ways to feel great with or without the pounds that are there right now. I‘ve been through weight gain from illness and it’s so important to realise that our precious bodies do their best to keep us alive and deserve to wear nice clothes no matter how much or how little fat/water we‘re made up of at any given moment. For me the game changer was starting to apply makeup every day and throwing out my ragged comfortable clothes. I still wear comfortable, but no more holes. I wish you the very best.
FINALLY a fashion person who encourages wearing insane neon outfits and isnt like "omg never wear 2 colours at once you must wear all black with burgundy if you want a colour or you can never go in public" i respect you
I love how you always bring so many different "editorial" outfit examples seen on so many different kinds of people. It's always truly inspiring, and I always leave youtube feeling better and more excited to experiment with fashion!
Ok, you're inspiring me to actually wear my dark purple pants with a lighter purple shirt. I ALWAYS have thought "I can't wear that, it's too much purple!" But.. maybe I should! Also, I'm in Japan right now and big chunky sweater over long dress/skirt, floral or otherwise is big here at the moment. Love it.
@@crystalmckinneycoaches I'm definitely feeling that way, I'm branching out into more colors and styles that I've previously boxed myself out of. For what?! Wear the Baja blast colored sweatshirt! Why not?
This just brought back memories to a teacher who had a purple outfit. Except it wasn't just two pieces, but half a dozen. And each a different (but at the same time too similar) shade of purple that in combination all just clashed horribly with each other. In retrospect I think she understood the concept but failed on the execution. Which unfortunately also could be said for her lessons …
Thats one of my favorite things to wear, my streamlined pure purple pants with lighter purple tops i always get looks and compliments, and i feel so opulent. Do it!!! :)
😊Bought a purple pencil & a fuschia pencil skirt back in the 90s that fit my ⏳️ hourglass proportions perfectly, but NEVER could find anything I really liked to go with them😂. A clip of Monica in Friends📺 popped up in my Shorts last year. 💜She was wearing a purple pencil, a white tee w/a lavendar & black graphic down the front, & lavendar suede trainers. That sent me off & doing cartwheels 🤸♀️ 🤸♀️ 🤸♀️. 📷 ¹Now, either wear it w/a white crew neck tee, lavender sweater vest, & white trainers. ²Swap out the sweater vest for a petite lavendar bandana infinity scarf. ³Lastly, will wear a black pleated halter, a purple sweater tied around my shoulders, carry a black tote, don a purple cap featuring Snow White's Malificent, as well as put on my sleek black slip-on Skechers. 🎉Gotten major compliments on all three looks🎉. 📷 With the hot pink skirt 💗, I wear ¹a light stonewashed sage green denim cap w/the two tone Pink Berry brand, pastel pink tee, & white trainers. ²Or, I've worn a high round neck dove gray sweater vest, hot pink petite infinity scarf, & sleek dove gray slip-on Skechers. Got positivity both ways. 🤔It could've been the outfits or my feeling feminine & fabulous in them. Take your pick. 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
This is such a JOY! Thank you for talking about fashion without focusing on body types and what isn't or is flattering for said body types. And for breaking it down in such an easy-to-understand way, THANK YOU. I am totally inspired xx
@vardaainur-michaelmas5462 lmao yeah he said it so happily too like pointing out a type of bird "oh look a groutfit!" like he had no idea the psychic damage 😂
Me, who exclusively has black clothes: yes I will watch the entire video. For real tho, I think having everything in my wardrobe be monochrome was subconsciously a huge draw to go all black. It's kind of liberating really. I also appreciate the diverse example pictures you choose for these videos.
Try implementing colors bit by bit. Every color goes with black. You can star with socks, or shoes, t-shirts. Slowly you will fall inlove with colors. I one also wore all black, then slowly introduced colors, and now i rarely go in all black. Now its mostly neutral monochromatic in the winter, and more vibrant in fron spring to autumn.
When you stop wearing exclusively black clothes, you discover just how quickly everything gets stained and dirty... and how it wasn't as obvious when you wore all black. (Speaking from personal experience!)
I love you for including bonus size models. I’m six feet tall, and around 200 lbs; I have been body shamed my whole life and had completely given up on fashion and beauty because no one in that world looked like me…until I started watching your videos. You help me feel seen and included. Thank you so much. ❤
My favorite design advice to give and live by (fashion, makeup, decor, etc) is that it doesn't have to match, it just has to go. Living with that advice has helped me get out of comfort zones and enjoy more variety which ultimately led to being much happier in the long run.
Yes! Thank you for putting it into words. I often don’t like matched sets. I think it’s because I’m fairly petite and it feels childish on me, especially if oversized and in brights. I like things in the same color family but mess with saturation and texture.
Yes! Alsp, there's no getting bogged down in body types, (which might as well be called "How to fake an hourglass shape"), and encourages using what you have coupled with mindfull shopping. This channel is breath of fresh air!
Well, I’ve become a firm maximalist, and I don’t know that I own anything monochromatic or neutral anymore (except my funeral dress!). So ideas #1 and #3 will be tricky for me. But idea #2 is calling my name. My exuberant patterned summer dresses paired with my bold multicoloured knits will be magic in action. Combined with my fatness and agedness, I’m gonna be a walking advertisement for public joy! Thanks, Hannah! 💕
I’m firmly maximalist too, but I can so many monochrome looks, if desired, except for the shoes or bag, which then I guess the outfit becomes number 3? I recently rocked red jeans with a pink sweater and pink sandals but was carrying my new camel colored leather tote. That tote POPPED!
I went into my closet and had 12 outfits in under 5 minutes! Brand new, never considered. They do tend toward Tonal/Neurtal monochromatic, but there were a few surprises! Thank you!
The monochromatic outfit - NOT in black - is one of my new favorite things! As a redhead, I’ve been rocking some all-green outfits lately (just not on St Patty’s Day).
Oh, I forgot all about that day, I usually do. I have a monochromatic green outfit I could wear, but have to remember to do it. I don’t mind looking a bit dorky by wearing holiday colors once in a while, at my age, 63, one is over that. I’m with you on the all-black outfits, there’s nothing interesting or creative about them, and they just look unflattering, grim and boring. They are a bit of a cop-out in my opinion.🙂
you have made me for the first time in years get as excited to wear my old clothes rather than buy something for that thrill. Thank you so very much for your content. I know it's meant to be beauty but your thoughtfulness when it comes to fashion has had an irrevocable change in how I view my world.
Thank you for serving ALL the nuanced, low-buy friendly fashion content, Hannah! I’ve been wearing tonal outfits for years, but always ensure the undertones match (for instance, I would never pair a cream with a snowy white, but would deign to pair cream with warm beige). Burgundy, navy, cool whites, periwinkle, and sea green are some personal favourites ✨
This is my FAVORITE fashion video of all time. As someone who prides herself in a strong memory and using things she's learned, I've caught myself coming back to this video now the third time and loving you even more. Thank you!
Same! So much fashion content feels of questionable value because it is unclear if it will still be as impactful or stylish on a body that is not size 2. The diversity of images and models really illustrated the concepts.
I really love how gender and size inclusive the images you chose for this video are, Hannah! I'm on a clothing low-buy this year and one thing I'm trying to do on the rare occasion when I do buy a new piece is to ensure that is brings something new to my wardrobe and that I will last me for many, many years.
My mom would always wear monochromatic outfits and got compliments back in the 90s. And she laughed because matching the colors was the only way she knew the clothes went together. She's going to get a kick out of learning this is a trend
As someone who is colorblind I find it extremely helpful and inspiring to hear you discuss color in both your beauty and fashion content. You have fully got me interested in trying out a monochromatic look now! Also I appreciate so much how you always include photographs that feature models of different ages, sizes, colors etc. Great video!
Yes to the monochromatic color realm! When I switched to wearing mostly solid colors and started restricting my color palette, I actually found so much versatility in the combinations of my clothing. I also discovered the tonal monochromatic outfits you highlight. Simple, cohesive, and effective. Love it.
You talked about the concept of an oversized knit on a maxi dress before and ever since then I‘ve been wearing my white oversized sweater on top of my handmade flowy, checkered dress and love that look! Thanks for also showing more body types. It was great to see one of the owners of my favourite fat sewing company in there 💌 Thank you for sharing!
omg this is the first video of yours i’ve come across but i’m already feeling so inspired! i LOVE how you talk about concepts (with lots of super helpful & body diverse reference images) rather than specific products or items so that we can tailor these ideas to our own styles and wardrobes! looking forward to more content like this!!!
Yes to monochromatic outfits! I kind of discovered by accident how thrilled I felt wearing tops and bottoms in the same colour range this past year. I felt so much more put together in a monochromatic outfit.
What a very helpful video! As an elderly person who has never been happy with the clothes I end up buying, this video really liberates my thinking. As a technophobe I can't purchase over the internet and rely on the diminishing high street outlets to find clothes. I find the clothes sold to be bitty, gimmicky, see-through, nothing matching, confusing - in other words, never what I'd like. But as this video suggests, the very interesting photoshoots shown can indeed be found in my bulging wardrobe of rejects! I especially like the concept of chunky knits over colourful summer dresses. And the video shows real people and everyday clothes rather than catwalk models which no-one wishes to look like. Thank you, you may have transformed my relationship with my wardrobe!
I am exactly the same , you took the words out of my mouth 🤭 I’m 60+ and struggle with the ‘can I wear this at my age’ having seen this I’m sure the answer now is yes I can 😊🎉 fabulous not frumpy is my new motto
as a new subscriber, it was shocking to find out that your chattel wasn’t even mainly a fashion channel because the quality was just so damn good and fresh and unique compared to lots of other things that were out there. All that to say, I’m super here for the fashion content!😂❤
I'm over here still rocking the red lip every day, and now I'm gonna go play in my closet! Love this video and your take on style. Oh, and your graphic making skills!
I really appreciated the diversity of bodies throughout the examples. I could tell you put the effort to not have just one body type be represented. Thank you ❤
I agree!! I bought a few Eileen Fisher linen piece for this Spring and summer. Black linen poncho with a black linen tank and pants. Long flowy white linen top over white linen pants and tank with rolled up sleeves. Two different teal pieces with different colored teal as cropped wide leg pant and short and long sleeve linen tee’s. I am having fun with these few pieces to also include a natural colored linen wide leg pant that can be worn with black or white pieces. I also bought a teal long jumper and use a wide cream obi belt with long ties in gold and wear this with gold Japanese sliders. Cinch it if it needs it is my motto. Love your ideas here!
Half of the schools I went to had a uniform dress code, but one school had a free-dress raffle that we entered with tickets that were earned for random acts of kindness around campus that pulled a handful of tickets at the beginning of each school week for the coming Friday. This one time I won, I was SO LIT to show up wearing all pink I can't even explain it. My mom got me this matching set with like four different shades of pink a few weeks before and I was like "mmhmm that's the one I'ma slay." I showed up so happy, and it was like every girl was going through a "eww you're wearing pink and that's girly" phase BUT ME. It's been my favorite color my entire life, yet that day made me really wary about dressing monochromatic. This video brought me back to reality. I want to tell 8 yo me "nah girl they just don't get it, you slayed" lol but frfr thank you for this video I'ma subscribe now.
I have a capsule wardrobe that combines dark with light (same 3 colours) and zero knowledge of fashion. 10 tops and 5 bottoms per season. Always same colours: dark and light versions. You have just given me one or two extra outfits to wear that I thought were not good but now I think I can wear. Thank you.
Yes! I love monochromatic outfits & wear them almost exclusively. If I don't have a top & bottom in the same shade or color family, I make sure they are the same value. I am not tall & I like the head to toe unbroken line. Whenever I wear an olive green outfit(a dominant color in my wardrobe) including jacket & olive boots, I get compliments or comments. I like adding interest by layering & combining different texture & fabric weight.
I love monochromatic, colourful outfits so thanks for all this inspo, all in one place. I think a body typing system like Kibbe that looks at how fabric drapes over the body rather than trying to 'compensate' everyone to look like an hourglass is the key to understanding if you look better with an unbroken vertical line or broken up vertical line, and if you look better in the outfits that are fully formfitting vs fully loose vs a balance of fitted and loose items.
Kibbe's is amazing truly, it's not restrictive, doesn't tell us we should all strive to look like tall hourglasses and wear head to toe same colour and that's truly revolutionary
@@grreeeeee all of them say "this is what goes with your geometry, it's a guideline, these are the visual rules, and this is how to break them" and so much more than "just wear this "
@@grreeeeeeAs for bows and ruffles, those kinds of details are more about Kitchener essence, which is based on your face and personality. Kibbe is about the overall drape of fabric and the shape of an outfit, not little details like that.
@@grreeeeee 0) First I encountered this system is from Justine Leconte, but she doesn't follow it. She's a fashion designer but I don't like her advice, it's all too "everyone should be a tall long elegant hourglass". She does give good guidance on quality of garments. 1) My favourite is Elyssa, she is definitely most nuanced in her discussions of the system - but that makes her videos long, and I know some people don't like long. 2&3) Aly art and Merriam style are quite detailed too, instructive, but they don't put nuance into every single video so you might not like that. I watched all of their videos, so I know their philosophy is to first of all feel good in your clothes, but if you would just pick a few videos on random, they don't repeat it in all of them, so it would be lost on new viewers, especially if you already come mistrusting the system. Also Aly's first language is not english so there are some terms that might sound weird, i'm also slavic so i do find that i understand better what she is trying to say, but it can be an issue because she translates some things literally from her language to english ( i think she's russian) and the meaning is lost. 4) Ellie-Jean Royden | Body & Style is a newer one for me, she talks a lot more about style than archetypes, at least in the portion of the videos i watched, so didnt learn much new from her on the kibbe system, but some of her explanations did help for some stuff to finally click for me (e.g. shoulders geometry). I like that she mentions between-types, for all of us that are not sure yet ☺ Those are the main, that I follow regularly, Aly is especially inclusive I like that about her. If I find any more I'll edit the comment but these are the best for me. I did encounter on my recommended I few that I very much didn't like from the language they were using, it's meant to be neutral but they seemed almost offensive to me.
@Rachel I would recommend Gabrielle Arruda. I really like her explanations of Kibbe types, but what I find especially helpful is the way she describes combining the Kibbe system with Kitchener essences. I find this is a way to cover more of the bases, and often allows for a more nuanced exploration of personal style that matches each person’s vibe and personal preferences. I also like Aly Art and Merriam Style for Kibbe content as another commenter mentioned already. Merriam has her own way of describing body types that she uses sometimes, but it basically corresponds with the Kibbe types, and she also talks specifically about Kibbe. She definitely has videos that specifically go over the way fabric and different cuts of clothing drape over different body shapes and the lines and silhouettes created from that.
I think about this every time you post a video with inspo photos: thank you SO much for the thoughtful size/gender/racial diversity of the images you share.
Your fashion videos are tremendous. I'm overwhelmed by the size of my clothing collection and feeling uninspired and these videos are helping me simplify but with a creative vision in mind. It's a slow process for me but your ever expanding catalog of fashion videos reinvigorates my drive. I love the monochromatic concepts you showed, when I hear 'monochromatic,' I definitely thought of two bright pieces, but you shared a great variety of examples. Really looking forward to your future fashion videos.
Tonal monochromatic, bright or neutral, are very sophisticated. Haute couture has been doing this for decades. Higher quality fabrics often use tonal monochromatics within the print or texture. Thanks for showing us some great examples! Very inspiring.
this makes me so happy! at. 44 i’ve returned to a tonal pastel monochromatic look. the first time i was ever very mindful in my fashion, was when i was 10 and doing the same. it was always a pastel legging & turtleneck, and a darker toned shaker knit sweater 😂
As someone who started wearing more colors, tonal brights are much easier to archive given that it's a bit harder finding pieces with the exact same shade, especially if you're buying from different brands and singular pieces instead of sets.
As I am wearing through my no buy year clothes, I am combining so much! I appreciate these suggestions so much.. They are fashion and sometimes I feel like I have to tone it down for other people but no more! I am going to take these ideas and start playing with them more bc I love them 😊❤
I love your post, Keri! I just finished my no buy year (I did 12 months rather than a calendar year). I fully expected my no buy year to lead me to buying more neutrals. Instead, I now have a bright and vibrant wardrobe that reflects my personality and style. It’s so true that fashion is personal and should serve us, not the other way around! ❤
I love the graph!!!!!! And I love this video. I totally living for your fashion content ( I'm in such a beauty slump, never thought I'd say this.....but I'm so fed up with makeup, I feel like my brain is over saturated and underwhelmed with product overload) THIS, however is a breath of fresh air!!!! Digging out my orange and brown floral maxi dress to pair with my brown sweater and my brown doc Martins to wear to work tomorrow. I'm excited and inspired!!!
I wear microcramatic all the time. I’m 5’1 and I actually wear cropped oversized sweaters w longer midi/maxi skirts. It helps my proportions and gives a nice long line. If I had a long oversized sweater, it doesn’t look right on me. Just play around with textures of the same color too, to elevate the looks too. Love the content!
This was fantastic! I am 65 yo and have a mustard yellow slip dress that I have never felt confident wearing but am not ready to donate yet. I just pulled it out of my closet and paired it with an oversized sweater in a similar yellow color and some tan sandals. It looks amazing and I never would have thought of it before. Thank you Hannah. I’m now going to run back to my closet to see what other pairings I can find…. Ooh! My oversized striped sweater works too! Yay!
loving the fashion content. Such a refreshing take. editing to add: just tried #2 with my two summer dresses and my one and only big sweater and wowww how it worked. I would never have thought to put these pieces together
Yes, I want to hear more of your thoughts on developing and curating personal style. So inspiring and helpful. I’m rewatching these videos, and it’s helping me to get out of a slump around how I clothe and style myself. Thank you for your thoughtful recommendations; they help me so much!
THANK YOU! I’ve been in love with monochromatic looks my whole life, especially creams. I stopped wearing them years ago when my daughter told me it was too “old lady”. (She was 16) I’ve revisited this look recently and am obsessed. Even she approves of some of my looks. (Now she’s 27). I’m excited to have stumbled onto your channel and can’t wait to watch the rest of your videos. I’m a hairstylist/makeup artist, so I’m thinking I will enjoy all of it.
I ended up doing the sweater with skirt/dress thing this winter out of necessity. My was so swollen and in so much pain, nothing else fit/was comfortable enough. The compliments blew me away. Some of us really are just wearing what feels comfortable and accidentally looking good. Thrilled to be less swollen now & enjoying my jeans again while it’s still cool enough to do so.
the sweater over a dress in the winter is one of my favorites! I wear fleece leggings underneath too usually, it ends up being the coziest outfit ever. And I've been experimenting with more monochromatic, as I used to say "oh I can't pull that off" and I have to say, it's so fun and brings a new level of joy to getting dressed sometimes!
Been doing this for two years now and got rid of half my wardrobe! Plus it doesn’t cut my figure in half and hides and bumps etc…I’m drawn to all colours of the rainbow and have top&bottom combos hanging - so I just think ‘what colour do I feel like wearing’? Rather than putting a look together - it’s already done! Best wardrobe decision ever! Thx for the vid
Love fashion “formula” videos like these! Inspires not to buy new things but to work with what I have- because ultimately the new thing is probably the same (in an outfit formula sense) as what I already own.
I’m shook! Watched this video yesterday and I tried an all green outfit today. It’s fabulous!!! I would have never thought to put this together. Even though I love to play dress up with my clothes and have tried all kinds of things. Your styling tips have opened a new world for me. Thank you so much!
Can I just say! I’ve been watching since the fist video and I LOVE the fashion content. I WFH so I don’t really use makeup anymore but I love content like this because it’s very relatable to what I’m looking for. I would love to see like a OOTD of the week video where you talk through your ideas. I think your style is fashion yet comfy.
I am going to try a few of the tips. I would love to be able to pull off the over sized sweater with a skirt or dress but I feel like it adds weight and bulk where I don’t want it. I also feel self conscious when I try something new that is not something that I would typically wear, however, I think I’m going to try a modified version of the sweater/dress look. Thank you for the inspiration.❤
Thank you Hannah, I'm definitely inspired to try tonally neutral monochrome outfits! At first I thought I don't have any options but then I remembered I own 1 pastel pink and 1 off white pairs of clothing. And that's just off the top of my head from me being not a fashion person)
Last night for date night I wore a long orange slip dress with stockings and an oversized black knit and was so here for it. Thank you for the advice it looked so cool and I felt so confident and cozy!!!!
This is definitely giving me some ideas to reinvigorate my work wardrobe and may even help me wear some things I haven’t been interested in wearing for a while.
I LOVE your fashion posts!! I have just reached the point where I can appreciate and wear a monochromatic outfit. It makes me feel polished, even if it is casual. It makes me feel like I'm not trying too hard and it really is so very easy to put together. Please post more fashion videos. You really do a great job of explaining things so that they are applicable to our lives.
I’ve been attempting tonal monochromatic outfits more frequently in the last couple months, mostly neutral creams/browns/black because it felt winter appropriate. Now that it’s SPRING I’m looking forward to try ‘brighter’ COLORS!!!! Mustard yellow is the one I’m most excited about 😁
Oooooh! Monochromatic with shares/ tones! It is such a good look! Chef's kiss! Or monochromatic, but with 3 or more TEXTURES. That's a great one too. Yes. 🙌
Thank you for your tips. I will try a black jumper over a printed dress as it's Autumn here now. I like the tonal dressing concept also...I am five foot 7,so a couple of inches shorter than you, and I find a bright monochrome outfit too overpowering for my height and colouring, but tonal breaks things up and adds a bit of interest, which I like. With statement pieces, I prefer to make them the "star" of a fairly neutral background. I do have a flair for the dramatic 😅😂. .. but I am also conscious of of wanting to feel 'a part ' of my surroundings aa this helps to calm my slightly anxious nature. 🌷🙂
OMG I learned SO much from this video. I love fashionable dressing but have missed the mark often. The outfits rolling around in my brain now because of your lessons, using clothes I own..just...WOW. 1001 likes from me! Got a summer skirt and chunky sweater I can't wait to wear! Thank you!
I love doing the one statement piece! It gives me a chance to really relish in its beauty and confirms why I was drawn to that piece, and why I purchased it. That kind of wardrobe piece deserves its own day out on the town!
As someone who dresses in exclusively in black and white, I've recently been experimenting with wearing color. I'm actually comfortable dressing in a monochromatic or tonal outfit. Though I might be in head to toe blue, it doesn't feel as "out there" as if I was wearing 2-3 totally different colors.
How is it that I was just daydreaming about bright tonal looks on my walk home literal moments ago? Must be in the air as such things often are. You could even add a third axis to your graph: texture. My favourite way to do a true monochromatic look is to play up different textures. I probably learned to dress tonally while pursuing monochromatic looks at the thrift store where exact colour matches are generally a bit of a fluke. Bless you for this vid-each tip an absolute banger x
I agree about the magic of a monochrome outfit. My laziness in trying to put together a good outfit from my closet, and just making it all shades of one color, like green, blue, purple, or brown, has often resulted in my most complimented outfits. You have to put way less thought and effort in and yet the outfit still ends up looking curated. I had never heard of it described as Tonal before, but I like that. All I ever have to think about when I go with one color is if the textures are compatible (subjective, ofc) and what kind of silhouette I'm looking for. Plus if I'm leaning more masculine or feminine or a mix. Only having to think about those things and still ending up with something cute has always been so nice. I once was asked if I study fashion simply because my outfit was all shades of brown lmao Plus you can just pick what color fits your mood that day!
I might try a couple jumpers with my floral print skirt and maybe some trainers, cause it’s a bit too formal for my workplace so this might work to dress it down a bit
I LOVE this video so much! As soon as I finished watching I immediately ran up to my closet and starting pulling outfits to photograph for future wearing (or immediate wear as it turned out)! Even though I'm only going to work today (where I change immediately into surgical scrubs for the day) I'm choosing to wear a monochromatic black look with oversized chunky turtleneck paired with a black, pleated asymmetric handkerchief maxi skirt and knee high lug sole boots :) Sure, I"m only wearing it to walk in and out of the hospital, but I'm going to look fab for those few minutes today! Thank you for the inspiration!
This was interesting. I did notice in the example pictures that when the monochromatic outfits were a color that they even though it may have been a light and a dark combined they were BOTH either COOL or WARM. & not, for example, a cool yellow top with a warm yellow bottom.
I'm generally perceived as quite "trendy" in the workplace, but I actually have a box I call the "beater bin" and only wear clothes I feel are not valuable to work, so when I realized people thought my scrubby clothes were fashionable I was pretty gobsmacked. but I think my coworker and I have worked out why I seem pretty trendy I tend to follow a rule I've made up where if one item of clothes is oversized or blousant, one other must be fitted. so the eye naturally travels back and forth. so even if you are wearing denim beaters to throw wood planks around, you still somehow accidentally look like you've tried. I thought I was doing it for easy range of movement. because, like, if you wear too many oversized things, you can't move around very well because the fabric catches. but if you wear too form-fitting things, you can't move around very well because you focus so much on what you are wearing. but if you wear one-to-one ratio, you get the best of both worlds. and then you apparently seem fashionable, because you swap between shapes every day depending on the job that you are doing and still look clean and neat even when you are covered in sawdust so I figured I'd drop that hot tip in the chat because it sort of flummoxed me that I'd accidentally stumbled on something that kind of seems universal in hindsight it's apparently not about individual pieces at all, but how you assemble them idk why it seems revelatory, but in the world of fast fashion I think it's something that I sort of forgot or somethin'
I love monochromatic outfits at both ends of the spectrum. Its a look that makes me confident and I get complimented more often when I wear them. They tend to make my lines longer and look a bit more bougie even when the individual pieces aren't.
some of the more unique and useful tips I have seen in a long time. I like the idea of using clothing I own, having put on weight in the last two years and feeling down about having to lose slow and steady again, I still want to look nice, so utilising my existing clothes that fit me but looking stylish and new combos is brilliant. thanks.
You absolutely needed to enter the fashion world of youtube. I just found you and am so inspired by your thoughts and ideas. The visuals you included here were very helpful. I learned that I have already been wearing monochromatic outfits but I could do better! I will try all of these ideas you shared.
Honestly I'm impressed. I have a VERY minimalist wardrobe and during the last few years I've only added like 2-3 pieces of clothing to it. These kinds of videos usually don't work for me cause I just don't have even a certain type of clothes to test some advice. But this video made me think of some ideas how to match pieces that I've never thought to match before. Impressive, thank you.
Last time I wore a grey t-shirt with grey tracksuit bottoms I looked like I was sporting a pj 😂 but I love to see the up-dressed version of this, they do look really cool. I feel that monochromatic looks work best when they look intentional and include more refined and casually posh items
As a petite gamine shaped person who used to wear all black, to all white, and my school uniforms included black, white and navy undertones. I stayed in that category most of my teenage years then a friend of mine arrived to our party wearing a beautiful hue of pink blouse and purple skirt, textured purse and shoes. I had to ask her where'd she buy her clothes, she advised me to go to New York with her next time and we could go into every thrift shop. I started wearing reds, pinks, orange, etc. I'm going to send her your YT video link. She will love it! I did watch your other video about lifestyles and categorizing which tasks are done frequently. It sounds quite similar to the advice I read years ago in a book. I can't remember if it was an early 19th or 18th century. It was written in a way for women who wanted to mend clothes and uncolor match, and match some fabrics when mending worn clothes. Adding textures into accessories and wearing certain shapes and sizes of jewelry so that the clothes speak up. And vice versa for flamboyant, couture, fully shaped clothing. Interesting to learn that we still get the same advice from the past and the present. Great job on the making of this video Hannah!
I EVEN MADE A GRAPH
Live laugh bahdahbababaahh love a graph
I love all of this - I just spent three months in creative/sartorial/existential crisis - exclusively wearing giant sweatpants and and Olsen twin tee shirt, the latter of which inspired me to look up older fashion photos of said twins, and monochromatic dressing was IT. I'm digging my way out of this funk by doing this thing
I LOVE YOUR GRAPH
Love the graph! 🎉
I’ve officially cycled to being “vintage” at the ripe age of 49 😂
Edit* St.
I love this, inspiring ❤
Thank you for sharing, Dorothy ❤
I used to work in Harrods. Sales assistant, well, you know. I've learnt to appreciate the monochromatic outfits from the "old money" clients. Rarely did they buy the matchy-matchy outfit, like top and bottom. The reason is that one will inevitably be used more than the other, and with time, the difference in colour is almost unavoidable. However, when you buy outfits in the same colour but different in texture, magic happens. Magic, which lasts decades..
I don't quite understand the last part.
@princess_urama two pieces made out of the same colour will look different with time, as one will age sooner than the other. When pieces are different in texture but same in colour, they will work together for longer.
@@kp-2211 ohhh, thank you
We may have met then as I go to Harrods frequently :) And you're very right about the magic.
Thanks for sharing, great observation 😊
The best thing I did for my fashion is stop trying to be the beige rich girl look that didn't make me happy, to wearing brightly coloured dresses everyday year round. Not only am I happy but I constantly get compliments on the most outrageous of coloured dresses than I ever did wearing what fashion magazines say are "in"
Being true to your style is the best look for you🥰!
That’s your style signature! 👏🏼
Yeah! You look better when you dress for your personality 😊
I like beige and related colours but they look awful on me because they wash me out. So I go for pale blues as an alternative natural colour - the sky is naturally many shades of blue.
Yeah, beige is a big NOPE 😅for me.
That sound like so much fun! I bet it gave u something to look forward to each day! Also, aren’t sisters the best?!?!
Genious!
OOTD goals!
I work in fashion and I'm not usually interested in fashion content. It's usually either the same ideas over and over or are completely unhelpful for anyone without a massive (totally unnecessary) shopping spree for the latest trend. This is SO refreshing. Well done! I hope you do more of this. 👌
I couldn’t have said it better myself!
Omg yess agreed!
Love the fact that your fashion content isn't all about consumerism and fast fashion. Love these ideas!
Same here!
Perfectly said!
Me too!
I agree!! I love the fashion content!!
That sounds amazing, thanks for sharing :)
I have a flower crown! I got it 10 yrs ago when going through Big C! Every time I wear it peopleshare positive comments!
Sounds awesome.
YES!!! I love flower crowns too I wore one for a Halloween costume Wedding.💗🥰😘
This is so wonderful wearing colours and flower crowns that make the kids happy 😊
I hope you have a lovely day 💕
@@ggeemmiinnii Thank you.
FINALLY a fashion person who encourages wearing insane neon outfits and isnt like "omg never wear 2 colours at once you must wear all black with burgundy if you want a colour or you can never go in public" i respect you
Big agree! What’s life without a little color?
I love how you always bring so many different "editorial" outfit examples seen on so many different kinds of people. It's always truly inspiring, and I always leave youtube feeling better and more excited to experiment with fashion!
Yes! Fashion is visual, you're doing well to SHOW what you are talking about, not just a "talking head". 👍🏼
Why not?
LILO! I bought a pair of purple corduroy pants my first year at University and wish I had kept them! I have been looking ever since with no luck.

This is such a JOY! Thank you for talking about fashion without focusing on body types and what isn't or is flattering for said body types. And for breaking it down in such an easy-to-understand way, THANK YOU. I am totally inspired xx
Yes!! You took the words right out of my mouth
i once wore a gray monochrome outfit and my boyfriend called it a groutfit and i honestly never recovered
Hope you dumped him. No one needs that negativity

I’m sorry, but this was funny. Thanks for sharing 😂
Same haha ! I watched the entire video and now I want to wear colours and sparkles though 😂
Same here! And yes, the diverse selection of models is highly appreciated ❤
I like the one load of laundry and everything’s clean of wearing all black.
Living with that advice has helped me get out of comfort zones and enjoy more variety which ultimately led to being much happier in the long run.
wow, I am in love with this advice! going to repeat that many times to myself as I decorate my home
I love this. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve said, “Matching is highly overrated.” 😊
Yes! Thank you for putting it into words. I often don’t like matched sets. I think it’s because I’m fairly petite and it feels childish on me, especially if oversized and in brights. I like things in the same color family but mess with saturation and texture.
As a larger lady, I appreciate that you show both larger and older models on your videos. Well done. Subscribed immediately.

So exciting to see exuberant people wearing mixed patterns. It makes me happy❤️
Yay for fatness and agedness and exuberance! We should all be so lucky! (Also glad I'm not the only person that keeps a funeral dress 😂)
I laughed, I .mix this coloured patterned fabric with that coloured patterned fabric to make my monochromes.
This is a comment from myself in the future... Happily and proudly on my way to maximalism... In both colors and patterns and size lol
I went into my closet and had 12 outfits in under 5 minutes! Brand new, never considered. They do tend toward Tonal/Neurtal monochromatic, but there were a few surprises! Thank you!
I also found all kinds of outfits out of what I had. How much fun
The monochromatic outfit - NOT in black - is one of my new favorite things! As a redhead, I’ve been rocking some all-green outfits lately (just not on St Patty’s Day).
🔥🔥🔥
Thank you!
Yay more fashion content. Also really appreciate how diverse all the models are in the photos you choose 😊

All-Navy Beardy Dude With Drapey Neckline killed me ded. SO many great example photos here!
was coming here to say the same thing!!! i know that takes time and research and does not go unappreciated!
Yes! Was going to mention this too!
Same! So much fashion content feels of questionable value because it is unclear if it will still be as impactful or stylish on a body that is not size 2. The diversity of images and models really illustrated the concepts.
The "getting swallowed by clothes" is basically dance astetics and I love it so much. Looking flattering is sometimes the enemy of fashion!
The sweater over a dress thing has been my absolute go to lately!! It makes me feel cute but not too fancy, which is perfect for work (I’m a teacher).
anytime i've made a monochromatic outfit, bright color or neutral, it's an absolute SLAY and looks so chic
I love that you included a photo of Iris Apfel in the Tonal Neutrals group! If Iris does it, it is correct! :)
Definitely

My mom got me this matching set with like four different shades of pink a few weeks before and I was like "mmhmm that's the one I'ma slay."

I like that she mentions between-types, for all of us that are not sure yet ☺
Those are the main, that I follow regularly, Aly is especially inclusive I like that about her.
I am going to take these ideas and start playing with them more bc I love them 😊❤
Dress only to make yourself happy, who cares what others think? That’s one of the things that makes us all unique, how we choose to style ourselves!🙂
Burgundy Red and Soft pink (from millenial pink to baby pink) is a favorite “weird” color combo.
Omg that outfit sounds AMAZING. I wish I could see it but I know you will look out of this world great.
@Tracy Sansotta awww thank you so much ❤
I hope you were able to wear your beautiful outfit today and feel great while doing it 😊
I wear microcramatic all the time.
*ponders how to wear that lavender tulle skirt next week*
I would never have thought to put these pieces together
i love love love the body diversity in your examples 😭
I think the sweater + dress/skirt combo can work with oversized sweatshirts too. I’ve done it and love it
Yes, I want to hear more of your thoughts on developing and curating personal style.
Thums up for showing different sizes ladies. My takeaway was the monochrome section and the statement piece section
I agree trying these ideas are so very joyful! it is just so liberating.
THANK YOU FOR INCLUDING SO MANY TYPES OF BODIES!!!!
I loved this video! Thank you for incorporating some body and size diversity in the inspiration images! 💜
Love all these ideas. Tried the monochrome and the big sweater and skirt idea too. Felt great and got some compliments too! Wow. Thanks a lot
Mustard yellow is the one I’m most excited about 😁
Oh!!!! AND denim on denim. Now one of my absolute favorites.. I wish I tried it a long time ago! I was missing out
Oooooh! Monochromatic with shares/ tones! It is such a good look! Chef's kiss! Or monochromatic, but with 3 or more TEXTURES. That's a great one too. Yes. 🙌
As someone who is trying to define their personal style a little more (to prevent too many impulsive purchases!), I needed this video! ❤
Loved this. So excited to give each of these a try. ESP the statement piece- so struggle with this one. Love love love and then never wear 🫠
I once was asked if I study fashion simply because my outfit was all shades of brown lmao
Plus you can just pick what color fits your mood that day!
You always do such a great job using a variety of ages, races, and body types in your example images. I really appreciate it!
Even though I'm only going to work today (where I change immediately into surgical scrubs for the day) I'm choosing to wear a monochromatic black look with oversized chunky turtleneck paired with a black, pleated asymmetric handkerchief maxi skirt and knee high lug sole boots :)
Sure, I"m only wearing it to walk in and out of the hospital, but I'm going to look fab for those few minutes today!
Thank you for the inspiration!
This was interesting. I did notice in the example pictures that when the monochromatic outfits were a color that they even though it may have been a light and a dark combined they were BOTH either COOL or WARM. & not, for example, a cool yellow top with a warm yellow bottom.
I'm generally perceived as quite "trendy" in the workplace, but I actually have a box I call the "beater bin" and only wear clothes I feel are not valuable to work, so when I realized people thought my scrubby clothes were fashionable I was pretty gobsmacked. but I think my coworker and I have worked out why I seem pretty trendy
I tend to follow a rule I've made up where if one item of clothes is oversized or blousant, one other must be fitted. so the eye naturally travels back and forth. so even if you are wearing denim beaters to throw wood planks around, you still somehow accidentally look like you've tried.
I thought I was doing it for easy range of movement. because, like, if you wear too many oversized things, you can't move around very well because the fabric catches. but if you wear too form-fitting things, you can't move around very well because you focus so much on what you are wearing. but if you wear one-to-one ratio, you get the best of both worlds. and then you apparently seem fashionable, because you swap between shapes every day depending on the job that you are doing and still look clean and neat even when you are covered in sawdust
so I figured I'd drop that hot tip in the chat because it sort of flummoxed me that I'd accidentally stumbled on something that kind of seems universal in hindsight
it's apparently not about individual pieces at all, but how you assemble them
idk why it seems revelatory, but in the world of fast fashion I think it's something that I sort of forgot or somethin'
The video appeared on my feed so I watched it. I loved the fashion content and the diversity of the model. You gave me some good ideas.
