Review: 2024 BYD Seal Premium in Malaysia - Flopping Fantastic (3 Series, C-Class killer?)

    We might've neglected to mention the BYD Seal Premium's rated range in the video, so here it is:
    570km (WLTP) - More accurate to real world driving
    650km (NEDC) - Lab-based tests mimicking ideal conditions
    ****
    Let’s get one thing out of the way: the BYD Seal would not exist without the Tesla Model 3. BYD pretty much set out to take down the Model 3 and spent a lot of effort, not to mention money, to create a car good enough to take a big swing at it.
    Yes, they’ve done that. It’s a great EV, possibly one of the best on sale anywhere at this price. And if you’re in the market for a BMW 3 Series or Merc C-Class, especially in Malaysia, this BYD absolutely flattens them in terms of value for money. Should you....Seal the deal? (sorry)

    This is one of the best reviewers in Malaysia. Far better than wap*cough* reviewer. His English is fantastic and should be the level all Malaysians aspire to.

    Their are (limited) air con controls near the shifter.
    It can also be controlled on the dash screen via buttons on the steering wheel.
    With the the new update, aircon can be controlled using 3 finger gestures on info screen no matter what screen is currently showing. Vertical gestures for temp and horizontal guestures for fan speed.
    I dont even own this car

    • @carlist_my
      @carlist_my  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Guess the car we were driving didn’t have that update. Seems like an obvious fix. The limited HVAC controls near the shifter is to turn aircon off/on or Auto, but we’d argue those are not really useful.

    The door handles can be popped open manually when required by pushing one side of it in, making the other side rock out.

    Very nice review bro jim,, the price is not much different from the civic hybrid, which one would you recommend?? because you reviewed the civic hybrid also as very good..

      if you’re not ready for the EV lifestyle, you can’t go wrong with the Civic e:HEV, and it does drive better. but if you want to ditch ICE, the Seal is great option.

      BYD just opened a big factory in Thailand. Will Malaysian-bound units be made there, and will that result in a price reduction?

    The performance model has adaptive suspension if im not mistaken. Considering the minimal price difference I'd much prefer the extra power if/when it was ever needed.

    • @CThienV
      @CThienV 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Its not active adaptive

    • @carlist_my
      @carlist_my  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The Seal Performance has what BYD calls frequency selective dampers, but they are still passive and not active/adaptive. Given how they termed this, they might count on you thinking they are. But either way the Seal handles pretty well.

    How would you compare the driving with Civic hybrid. The looks Seal wins but if only compare the drive, would like your thoughts since your review on Civic Hybrid was also very good. Thanks.

      In term of performance seal win..but in term of efficiency civic hybrid win. I got both..so i can give you a clear view between these two..

    • @CKTong-x8v
      @CKTong-x8v 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@mulomantore how about comfort, handling and drive? Not acceleration.

    • @mulomantore
      @mulomantore 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@CKTong-x8v In terms of handling, both are surprisingly good. However, I prefer the Civic because the driver's seat position is much better, sitting lower, although it's not as comfortable for passengers. My parents-in-law prefer the Seal because the suspension is softer and it's easier to get in and out. But don't get me wrong, the Seal sits lower among other EV cars, which is one of the reasons I chose it.
      The Civic feels like an EV most of the time, even it can cruise in EV mode up to 130 km/h. However, the cabin noise is not as well insulated compared to the Seal.
      You may hear a lot of road noise, which can cause discomfort for you and your passengers. However, it's still an improvement if you are upgrading from a Myvi or a similar class. I compare it with the Myvi because my wife has one.
      By the way, just go and test drive both because you may feel different and have different expectations. However, if you want to choose an EV, don't sell your ICE vehicle just yet. For now, EVs are not the best option for long-distance and reliable transportation. I'm not saying I regret buying an EV, but the charging infrastructure is still developing, and the cost of charging outside is still higher compared to running an ICE vehicle. But for daily commuting and charging at home, it is a good choice.

    • @carlist_my
      @carlist_my  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      It really depends on your priorities. The Civic is excellent, and IMO is better to drive fast or slow. But if you’re keen on going EV, the Seal is a great choice for a sedan.
