Pimax 4K Review - Budget VR

  • 2020: This video is now OLD! The Pimax 4K doesn't have controllers, and thus renders it incompatible with most of today's experiences. It was a cool way to experience 'VR' back in early 2017, but the controllers and much more expansive list of supported games now make controller support an essential. So check out my WMR Lenovo review here: • VR: The Valve Index VS...
    Thanks to Gearbest ( www.gearbest.com?lkid=10348812 ) for providing the Pimax 4K in exchange for an honest review.

    The Pimax 4K can access the same games and applications as the more expensive Oculus and Vive, but at a fraction of the price. It's likely inferior to the other headsets in most ways but does have a few strengths of its own. I believe the headset is passable at most things but does excel at some, like when viewing movies and for playing games at a higher forced resolution than the others can manage. Unfortunately there are no hand controllers or movement sensors for it yet. Not a problem with the headset, but something you should know if you're looking to experience VR with it. Instead, you can have a basic experience with the mouse / keyboard or from a Playstation /Steam controller.

    In all honesty, I see the Pimax 4K as being a very viable budget VR headset and don't understand why people would directly compare it to products twice its cost. You wouldn't criticise a Radeon 480 for not being as fast as a Geforce 1080, especially if they still both run the same games. The way I see it, the Pimax 4K majorly lowers the price-point required to experience VR but does urgently need its own controllers and base stations. Right now, with VR being in its infancy, I think the Pimax is very viable option if you want to try VR out but don't want to spend so much on what's essentially first-gen hardware.

    My experience with the Pimax as similar, but the 60hz is not the only downside it also have no depth, you can look around but not move you head closer, leaning ect ect. Can cause nausia in some VR games i tried.

      Only the rotational movement, no 6DoF? That's a shame, a dealbreaker for me. Maybe I could combine the 3 point LED model I cobbled together for flight sims to get the leaning in as well. I have to do some research.

    • @GraveUypo
      @GraveUypo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i don't know about that. pretty soon, all you'll need for that is your phone. new android devices are all going to ship with gearvr grade vr-compatible motion tracking, so all you'll need for steam VR is a viable wireless connection to a pc, which is also coming with the new 10gbps wifi spec, and a middleware like riftcat, which is already available and works with any gyro-equipped phone (though it kinda sucks because the sensors are laggy in current phones).
      so in a couple of years at worst, you won't actually have to buy almost anything to experience entry-level vr.

    • @ElRifrawad
      @ElRifrawad 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly...people are spending a shitload of money on products that are still at an infancy level with no major titles to play on....I say why rush it...enjoy your ps4/xbox/pc games without vr for now and instead of paying a shitload of money for a test-like head-set use the money to buy a better pc/screen/graphics card....VR can wait...enjoy the technologies we have mastered at their prime and in a couple of years when the newer versions of the headsets are released with hundreds of complete compatible games and much more affordable consumer-level prices, then you can buy them and enjoy the new-age of gaming. But for the time being, VR is not worth the trouble.

    • @kikinao
      @kikinao 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zero Budget Noob Hundreds of complete compatible games? Who will make them if you're putting people off VR? There will be no newer versions of headsets and VR is dead in the water if no one takes a chance on the tech, provided they have the means, of course.

    Phillip! I want to say i loved this review! It's something different that appeals to me as i own a vive. I also own a pimax because i wanted to check out the 4k. I do want to tell you though, compared to "real vr" like oculus and vive pimax does not even compare! The oculus and vive have roomscale tracking which means you can move your head not just 360 degrees but you can move in, move out, take a few steps over to the side, it doesn't sound like much but that completes the whole experience! I highly suggest you go out and demo oculus vive, or even playstation vr just to see the in and out tracking (even though the playstation vr tracking is terrible). I also wanted to say that the screen on the pimax is, good in certain areas, like the screen door effect which is good but compared to any other major vr headset it's very lacking. These were just my thoughts and It seemed like you liked vr and i highly suggest you go check out real vr at like bestbuy or the microsoft store or something because in all honosty the pimax feels like a VERY cheap knock off with %25 of the actual features of real headsets. I also want to say, for not having a headset to compare the pimax to, you reviwed this like REALLY well.

    Thank you very much for your review. I've been searching for a headset that would work for my needs in viewing 360º live streaming video from a set of mini BlackMagic cameras shooting 4k at 60fps. I plan to send a ROV fitted with a high end 360º camera system to explore the ocean animals under the mini sailing cruise ships. I didn't need any head tracking systems like in the Vive or Sony products. I just wanted to bring the diving experience to people who for one reason or another are unable to dive in cold Alaskan waters.

    not having basestations, controllers and the worse refresh rate makes the price seem a bit overpriced... if you take the 700€ of the vive and then remove 240€ for the basestations and 200€ for the controllers (in store prices -150€ because they probably don't cost that much too make) you get about 260 € for the headset... now lets compare that to 300£ and you see wich one of them really is cheaper... (yes it does have a higher resolution display but that is balanced out by the lower framerate)

    I've tried all three, the Vive, the Oculus, and recently the Pimax 4k. A friend who makes games for VR got one and let me try it. It's a pretty crazy coincidence that almost right after I try it you review it, but I was pretty disappointed. What killed it was the 60Hz. The Vive and Oculus have 90Hz. I can deal with sitting only, but the 60Hz feels choppy and nauseating compared to the Vive or Oculus. For someone who hasn't ever used VR before it might be ok, but coming from the other two is a definite and obvious downgrade. The tracking also gets a bit choppy sometimes.

Although at the time of leaving this comment, the Rift doesn't cost much more, but still it's nice to see cheaper alternatives. $800 for the Vive was too much for me to consider it seriously, but in the $400 range I'm much more likely to take the plunge (and I have).

    Gearbest is an awful site. Google their reputation if you don't believe me. You will probably get what you ordered, but any support beyond that is impossible. When I tried to return a DOA tablet, they wanted me to ship it to a warehouse in China before they sent out a replacement, and when I told shipping would cost me 130$ they basically said that's my problem, not theirs. Any return/replacement polices they have are pretty much a scam, and when you're ordering cheap Chinese brands that's not something you want.

      Weird, my experience is the opposite, I once made a mistake within my delivery address, but with some pushing and pulling I got it fully refunded (minus shipping costs), which they didn't have to, as their terms and conditions states that they don't have to do anything if you, the customer make a stupid mistake as filling in the form wrong... though, the product I ordered was about 40 dollars, so not that expensive. If gearbest is still a no go, I would also recommend banggood. When the product I ordered there broke, I got a new one and I didn't have to ship back the faulty product (shipping costs where to high for that, which according to their policy they would have to pay if their product is faulty). I only had to pay the shipping costs for the new product, which isn't much, if you live in The Netherlands. Maybe I just got lucky ;)

    I imagine the Pimax has a much lower framerate as it's higher resolution and cheaper.

    • @BeBarnee
      @BeBarnee 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      framerate depends on your video card.
      The only downside as mentioned in the video is that the Pimax has 60hz refresh rate, compared to 90 on the HTC Vibe and Oculus Rift

    I think the Pimax 4K is pointless, I mean the Google Cardboard can do everything this thing can do for cheaper and you can use special software on your PC to connect your phone to your PC and use the cardboard to play PC VR games.

    • @SpookySkeleton738
      @SpookySkeleton738 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the bandwidth would be a lot less, and screen latency would be even higher (nausea). Also, you'd need a super high end phone with at least a 4K screen (do they even exist?) to not get screen-door effect. I've used a cardboard, and the FOV on it is laughable.

      @Matthew-oo1ko 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coming from someone that has tested most of the consumer headsets I’d say mobile VR sucks. No positional tracking, No 6of controllers. However using a larger phone e.g iPhone 8 Plus would give you a much larger FOV. Depends on your lenses (Fresnel or Bipolar) focal length and IPD. However for cardboard headsets you only get a limited selection (Google, Chinese Wholesaler and those binoculars you pulled apart)

    Hey Phillip, I like the video and I'm glad you have been able to try some VR, but please try the Vive (or oculus) sometime. The PiMax lacks positional tracking, and it's hard to overstate how important this is.

    What you were saying about the nausea, apparently it's more likely to happen if you're very resistant to "travel sickness". Something about your body telling your brain that you're moving vs your brain telling your body that you're moving. I experienced it while trying out HL2 in VR on a rift DK2, since I always got nauseous about halfway through a level, I could never really finish it, but it was a pretty great demonstration of what's to come. If you haven't tried HL2 in VR, I'd recommend it, since the models look to have a higher polygon count than the demos.

    For the uploader:
    You can use the "Motion" Sensor on your vr and you wont need any controller.
    Really nice and easy to install, just glue it on the device.
    Maybe you can also solder it to the usb cable?

    I owned a Pimax 4k VR for 5 months now. It is generally a great product. I never really had problems with it other than getting the software to work well with it. I had to downgrade to an older version and I use that to hook it up with Steam VR. (I don't use the crappy things that come with the Piplay program)

  • @Frickolas

    11:50 , you can use the nolo vr addon to get hands. It only has one base station, and costs about $100, but there are plenty of software workarounds that have been made, and have proven to work great. But if you are really on a budget, get a windows mr headset($200~$400), which has a bunch of sensors in the headset that track your head, and the controllers very well, and allow for a much bigger play space.

    When I was watching people playing the new resident evil on psvr, they seem to have implemented a setting to help with the motion sickness when you move your field of view with the controller. It seemed odd at first, but what it seems to do is make the motion jittery and less smooth, when you use the controller, and that apparently helps. Long story short, I think getting motion sick when you control your fov with the controller is an issue faced by everyone...
