Throughout the history of Mario games, Peach has always been the damsel in distress that Mario always saves from Bowser. Peach has put on more of a heroic side in recent years, showing that Mario doesn’t always have to save her. Especially in the upcoming Mario movie it is shown that she is not the damsel in distress that we know and love but is going to play a role as the leader of Mushroom Kingdom.

Don't you think is a little precocious and hazardous to make this kind of video before the release of the film? Especially considering that the plot the film on every site on the Internet states that she's gonna get captured and there is a scene in the trailer that suggests that?
I'm just proud of how Peach acts as a protector of her Kingdom, and not just a strong independent woman for the sake of it.

Totally. I do kinda that Luigi will be the dude in distress, which does work. Peach being a protector does make it unique.
The fact that the directors confirmed that they were taking inspiration from super mario 3d proves officially 100% that peach is not woke in this movie.

What’s emotionally stronger? Needing to rescue your twin brother who you love, work with, and have known literally your entire life? Or needing to rescue a random princess you’ve never met to save a kingdom you have no personal investment in? Making Luigi the kidnapee was 100% the correct move.
EXACTLY that's what i said! She had to have been "Mario before Mario showed up" once he did she started letting her guard down with the new extra help and became the damsel in distress trope.
It makes more sense for Luigi to be kidnapped this time around, mostly because it gives Mario a reason to want to go on this quest. What better motivation than his brother who he loves?? And he only just met Peach in the movie, and so them going on an adventure together actually gives them time to bond and grow closer, which we don’t really see in the games

I think having Peach being a protector of the Mushroom Kingdom rather than being kidnapped. Every. Fucking. Game. Is a great decision.
I actually think Luigi is a better fit for the role as depicted because of a different more emotional reason: with keeping Luigi captive, not only does it debunk the horrible theory that Mario is an awful person but showcases the lengths he would go to protect and help his brother. Imagine seeing the reunion in the movie and Luigi hears all the crazy things Mario had to go through and that he never turned back in his journey. Doesn't that make you want to cry for how good hearted he's being portrayed?

@@liviecarter1854 You're welcome @Livie Carter. If you're interested, look up some other moments in the games, you will find a lot of evidence to find it's always been like this. There's enough evidence to say Mario loves his brother as much as there is to say he hates him. But I don't think that's the case. If he was truly like this, why would it be called the Super Mario Brothers? Evidence I would suggest is the Mario Power Tennis bloopers. Not only are they pretty funny but it's pretty much revealed no one HATES anyone, it's all in good fun. Mario at one point notices Luigi is in pain or trouble (I think it was an accident involving the rackets) and he cries in distress as he apologizes. Well maybe not like that but I do remember the two having some sort of exchange that ends in an apology. Check it out, I think it might really make your day, @Livie Carter!

Plus, at this point in the timeline, it's entirely possible that Bowser either hasn't personally met Peach yet (and therefore, hasn't developed his crush on her) or he has already developed his crush on her and he's trying to impress her by conquering kingdoms and stealing power stars. Basically, he thinks he can win her over by displaying power and dominance. Once this inevitably fails, then he resorts to just straight-up kidnapping her.
i like this theory and timeline, it would make sense for a sequel of the movie aswell

The plot for the movie is great since mario is new in the mushroom kingdom and his brother is lost and captured by bowser army it makes a lot of sense of mario to go to peach castle and ask peach to help mario find and save his brother from bowser.

i'm so glad princess peach isn't getting kidnapped,showing more of her in her kingdom and even more is joining the adventure with mario as i loved her playable moments like mario usa,paper mario & especially 3d world/run(biggest reason i got those games as i loved being able to play as her,rosalina & daisy.) and the games really need to stick to this direction as the kidnapping's outdated(something a zelda movie should take notes from as zelda outside a few versions isn't much better/worse with how much that series tries a story.) and should've ended a long time ago(just because it's been around for a long time doesn't mean it's good and was a lazy excuse for being bare with story.) just simply having bowser cause trouble.

I've been saying that for years that peach is a force because I remember when she use to be the main trouble of the mushroom kingdom as a bad girl and her strength was a bit of a downside but she made up for her quick tactical advantages and knowledge as time went on making her the basic superhuman with decent critical damage.
I like that Peach is more strong and smart, but her personality reminds me of P.Daisy tbh, anyway looks like a great movie. 🙂
And here’s a theory, maybe Princess Peach was childhood and girlhood friends with the tomboyish Princess Daisy from The Sarassland Desert Kingdom which is one of the locations seen in the Mushroom Kingdom world map and got a little cameo when Mario, Peach and Toad were passing through it and probably gained her strength, bravery and confidence from hanging out with Daisy way too much and that’s great, she needs to be a strong, brave and confident leader to protect her subjects from the huge threat known as Bowser, Kamek and his loyal army. 👑👸🍑👑👸🏜️🏝️💪

Honestly, those who complain about Peach not being the damsel in distress clearly haven't played Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario RPG, Super Paper Mario, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Run, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope and/or any of the Smash Bros. games... Y'know, games where Peach CAN indeed show her stronger side.
Heck, even in the Super Mario Adventures comic, when she was kidnapped, she didn't lose her badassness (and she was a MASSIVE badass in that comic)

Yeah, well usually when there's 'female empowerment' in modern movies, that's usually code for 'write all the female characters to be competent, and then write everyone else as being dumb as a bag of rocks'
Two major errors, Peach was never known as “Toadstool” in Japan, that’s always been her name outside of Japan, similar to how Koopa’s name was changed to “Bowser” or Dr. Eggman from Sonic’s name was changed to “Dr. Robotnik”. And much like Eggman, her Japanese name would later become her International name, with Toadstool being largely forgotten. Also Luigi wasn’t in Super Mario Land 2, the gameplay footage you showed was from a colorized ROM hack, although Luigi does show some signs of his cowardly personality in the Super Mario Adventures comic and some of the cartoons, so there’s that.
To answer your question tho, I’m okay with this dynamic change, it gets old seeing Peach as the damsel in distress all the time
She was always known as Peach in Japan, it wasn't until Super Mario 64 that the English localization was corrected
Peach can take care of self. She is helpful in the RPG series. I just think that Peach should remain as the damsel in distress. Cause this is Mario's origin story and the he saved her on Super Mario bros in 1985. Mario is in love with her and he would do anything for her. So, that would make sense. Even though it doesn't really seem like it right. Unless if the movie is portraying the next mario game.
He saved her here too (I presume that much is fair game without really spoiling anything.)
Suffice it to say this is Mario's Hero's Journey, Peach fills the critical role of the mentor (as hinted in the trailers) and Mario fulfills that journey to become the Hero.
Frankly I don't think the idea of putting yourself out for a pretty face you just met is a lesson we should be teaching our young boys. Mario had to build a bond with Peach before she would become worth saving.

I think these people are just incels that want negative attention because these are the same people that are responsible for the flanderization of Sonic characters between the early 2000s (pre-Sonic X) and mid 2020s (pre-Sonic Frontiers) like Sonic being an unintentional jerk (without a heart of gold), Tails and Knuckles being Sonic’s sidekicks with a cowardly temper, Amy making Sonic look worse than Eggman for forgetting her dates (reminds me of when Peach left Mario on the moon which while she was right not to feel good about him (and Bowser) forcing her into marriage, he didn’t deserve a punishment that big that doesn’t teach them because the Mario Bros. we’re rarely ever out of character), Shadow being an edgelord, Rouge being a femme fatale and other characters being barely utilized.

Peach certainly doesn't need to be a damsel, but they also didn't need to seemingly abandon everything that defined her in the games. She's already BEEN on plenty of adventures in the past, but on all of those adventures, she still acted like herself. The film on the other hand seems to have abandoned most of her quirks and eccentricities, which is a shame.
Yes thank you! I’m worried a lot of her personality is just boiled down to her just being this generic girlboss leader figure who makes cliche motivational speeches. I actually liked peaches personality in the games she was fleshed out (especially the paper Mario games). She was sweet and calm but sometimes made sassy. She’s stubborn and headstrong (I miss toadsworth). She’s just the iconic pink princess and I miss a lot of her traditional very girly princessy traits. I feel like that’s something looked down on these days which is really a shame to me.

I like how they switched who needs to be saved by Mario. Not only is it different from the game’s formula, but it makes sense to me. Mario can show his genuine love and concern for his brother and Peach can have enough screen time to show personality other than someone needing saving. She is shown to be able to take care of herself and CAN fight! Luigi’s highlighted character trait is that he’s more scared than his brother, which is shown to be displayed in the movie. If Luigi followed Mario, he would just be an irritating burden tbh
While Super Mario is definitely a fun series (especially in the late 20th Century and Super Mario Galaxy), one thing that makes it look less better would have to be the way Peach has been represented that somehow too many people think is kind of her especially when in Odyssey, she would leave Mario on the moon despite everything he and her other friends have done for her like save her life.
Yeah, and not to mention, coward though he may be, Luigi can be a badass too (just ask King Boo and any ghosts). Who's to say he won't manage to get out and fight off Koopas on his own?

And for her to tell them “Let’s go home!” Well then, maybe she could have taken them with her instead of off without them.)
I'm proud she is portrayed as a bada** good girl in the movie instead of a damsel in distress in order to develop chemistry with her and Mario, and it also reminds me of Lucy from The LEGO Movie.
Here's an idea... Peach tries to fight against Bowser on her own, but he manages to get the upper hand and she's forced to retreat. Peach realizes that she will in fact need help this time around, explaining and fleshing out her character.
They ended up having her able to take down bowser and his entire wedding party by herself, making her op was not a great choice

It’s a great change of pace and great for the movie! As highlighted in other comments, it gives Mario a greater incentive to go on a journey into the Mushroom World. I think it will highlight the brotherly aspect between the two. Plus when they do reunite it would be very fulfilling after seeing them separated for most of the movie. Having Peach be Mario’s guide is also great because Mario is connecting to this new world by the people he meets. Toad, Donkey Kong, and the rest too. Perhaps Mario rescues Luigi but Peach is kidnapped by Bowser. Mario would also be invested in saving her after going on a journey together. Plus Mario and Luigi can take down Bowser together to save her. It’s perfect. I’m glad we get this kind of investment in an Illumination film!

Movie Peach is actually exaggerated and kinda OOC.
1) She isn't that tough. Peach is a girly, sweet and graceful princess who becomes aggressive just when she's really angry. Most of the time she is just chill.
2) She would not punch people or use actual Kung Fu. I'm pretty sure she learns it in Peach Showtime (not before).
Go on, try prove me wrong and name a few games where she punches rudely someone in the face or use that kicks. Sports game excluded of course.
Or the Halberd ( which she doesn't use). Where the frick is her parasol?
3) Definitely Daisy traits.
When she put arms on her hips. Daisy canonical trait.
When she starts throwing punches around when the Kongs explain the plan.
Definitely something Daisy would do, not Peach.
Her kicking and punching fighting. I already explain this.
The Motorbike isn't actually a big deal but in Mario Kart 8 loading screen that's how Daisy is represented.
4) My idea for Princess Peach charachter remake:
- more feminine and less serious.
- more chill and now free to be more of herself since her kingdom is not in such danger anymore.
- in the game she is like Brawl Meta Knight. A too powerful charachter for the plot. Fix her slowly in the next movie so people don't see the difference so much.
- Parasol weapon. More Smash Moveset.
- give Back to Daisy her toughness, but more happy-energetic.
- Movie Daisy is chaotic, physically stronger and good at improvvisate plans or attacks, but less diplomatic and Peach is just better in organisation and branding weapons.

I honestly think that the writers of the Mario movie are going in the right direction with Peach unlike how she’s portrayed in the games as a damsel in distress getting kidnapped by Bowser in earlier games. It’s like a positive example of female empowerment.
there have been games where she isn't portrayed as a damsel in distress it's just not the big main platformer ones. she is playable in super mario RPG and it's made stated that peach possess power that dispels evil magic which explains why bowser kidnaps her at least in context to RPG. For the most part even if not playable she sometimes have moments of being helpful in partners in times its stated she managed to seal away the older sister of the alien race in a jewel she did get caught by the younger sister but the older one is much more threatning. Then there is the rabbids crossover where she is very badass in that and she also has that spin off game on ds which sadly didn't get any footing so really its just dependant on who is writing the games it's just the moments of peach not being a damsel is rarely the high budget ones
Not to mention that it fits the movie narratively. She’s not only a good queen for the toads, actually lookin after them and the kingdom, but helps Mario to take down bowser and rescue Luigi. Win win

Honestly, I'm really shocked that this narrative of Peach being a damsel in distress still exists, when her portrayal in the Mario movie is literally no different than any of her other active appearances. (it's literally Peach from Super Paper Mario or Mario RPG) She's literally one of Nintendo's best/most competent heroines only behind Samus Aran. This is literally just her reenacting Super Princess Peach with a take charge personality, which she has displayed in Mario games before. If anything, all of the ire Peach gets for being a damsel should be switched over to Princess Zelda, since for years I have argued everywhere (especially TH-cam) that she is the true damsel of Nintendo, she's literally been kidnapped in a single outing more times than Peach has. At least Peach gets kidnapped at most 2 twice a game, Zelda on the other hand if often captured at most up to 4 times in a single appearance and serves less importance in Zelda games than Peach. Zelda is literally the textbook example of a Faux Action Girl.
Zelda is literally an NPC in the series named after her and appears so infrequently that the games themselves don't even make the player care about her existence. Even when Peach is kidnapped, she still manages to help from afar by assisting the player with tips or items, Zelda meanwhile is largely inactive and whenever she does play a supporting role, she feels more like an item than actual assistance, as there's no reason Link can't just do those himself. And there's also not mentioning Smash, which showcases even more Peach is the more capable character. This is literally just Peach, but people don't see that. 😒
This is good because it sets up a Mario and Peach relationship. The movie is probably going to show how they grow close.

im not saying that I want Peach to be the DiD "Damsel in Distress" I dig the new confident and strong woman that Princess Peach is and people are going to ask me well then who is going to be or what will happen? I agree with their choice. Like it was the first time Mario was in the Mushroom Kingdom, if Peach was captured by Bowser, it would be hard for the Toads to guide Mario in the kingdom. However, he would have a guide (the princess. Oh, you lucky little boy!) to help him in his quest to defeat Bowser and rescue Luigi. I don’t need to remind you that the two twins got separated by the pipe.
I agree. It’s also better and more sensible that Luigi is the one captured and the movie is focusing on rescuing him than Mario going to save a random princess he’s never even met before
I very honestly love this change they made for Peach; from the typical damsel-in-distress we know from the games, to what the TV Tropes call an Action Girl. A way to show her braver side.

I'd argue she was never a damsel in distress because she's always had an affair with Bowser going on and has a kidnap fetish where she get's off on playing the damsel in distress (I bring this up because the games are connected according to Nintendo and she a) never puts money into defenses to ward of Bowser, and b) has shown multiple times she has the strength and power to beat Bowser with fair ease).

This is an issue I’ve had with Peach for a long time. She’s always just a plot device for Mario to save. She’s just a damsel in distress with no personality whatsoever and that’s it. She was just a boring and bland character in the games. However, it seems like this movie is gonna fix that problem based on the trailers. If that is the case, then good. Looks like they’re finally giving Peach the respect she deserves and leveling her up.
