About to do this on my 16 A3, Never really wrenched on cars "seriously" but seeing this made it simple to understand is about to save me some money, Appreciate the video man!
Hey, just wanted to update you. Job went perfectly. Did drop one screw, but was able to recover. I picked up on a technique you used; you had used electrical tape to keep the torx bit in that socket. I did this very thing as my torx bit kept sliding out. This saved my bacon. I ended up replacing the main gasket and the inner and outer cam magnet gaskets. It's been about a week. Cover is looking dry as a bone. Thank you again!
Dealership said I have a very small leak near the top screw of the timing cover. I thought to myself "why don't I tighten it", well I broke the screw doing this. The screw is loose and can't be pulled out, I put some RTV in there to keep it from moving. Dealer ship wants 550 bucks for this, part is 65.00 on FCP euro. Do you think I will be okay with the top sealed with RTV?
Oh crap!! May have stripped out the threads of the valve cover, so they probably want to replace the valve cover to is my guess, but yeah would give it a try! Your other option is to drill and tap with larger threads and see how that works out!
I have excessive oil on the spark plug in cylinder 1. Do you think the valve cover could leak into it since it’s on the side of the engine as opposed to it being on top on a regular car? Thanks for uploading this.
Yep, I would start looking into doing the valve cover gasket, I haven’t done it before but from the looks of the motor I think you have to take all this off anyways while your doing it so worth it to do a full refresh
Inside where the magnet sits there is an o ring for both magnets Done a few now and found out the bad way on the first one so won’t ever forgot again 😂
Thanks I used this video to do the job on my 2015 Audi A3 1.8 and only difference is my car only has the magnet on one side but otherwise exactly the same.
Great video. So can anyone tell me if this issue will cause a vacuum leak? Code P2187. I’ve replaced the PCV, gas cap and fuel injectors. Also did a carbon cleanse.
Cost wise I’m not to sure my guess from a shop it may be pretty expensive the oil pan is a lot easier to change that the upper timing gasket. I have changed one on an A3 before it just took as while as we used RTV instead of a gasket on the oil pan. But you may have to call around and try to get the best offer from shops
Is that the part the magnet sits inside of? Or on the magnet itself? And also thanks for the heads up, I didn’t know about that one, I haven’t had any leaks since but if it’s starts up again I’ll be replacing it😂
Do you have a part number for those? I’m about to do this job, I have a magnet leaking oil through into the connector. I’m about to replace that whole magnet, I don’t see an o ring on the new one….
@@singularorange7675 I also didn’t see it on the magnet, so hoping he replies as well, all the other replacement guides I’ve seen don’t mention them so I’m not sure
I did this same job because I had an oil leak. I took a look at my cam cover and it was covered in oil. I think a bad PCV caused excessive pressure in the crankcase which caused the cam gaskets to leak. Changed out PCV and all cam gaskets.
@@frod70 This is what I'm experiencing at 82K miles. I've replaced the pcv, removed an MST Performance intake tube and turbo inlet pipe and returned those to stock. Next I need to do replace the upper timing cover and all involved gaskets. Thinking of replacing the cam magnets too...
Hey sorry just saw this comment, but yes was getting a leak from the cam magnet closest to the firewall, and also from the gasket off that main cover that was hitting the exhaust so was smelling burnt oil. And I found that catch can kit on marketplace for $200 bucks so that was my main reason for doing that because I hear people have had problems with PCV as well.
@@asianangler mine was leaking from both and you have to remove the cam magnet to get to the upper timing gasket so I would say it’s definitely worth it to replace them all

No problem! Glad I could help out!

Nice!! Really glad I could help out hate the smell of burning oil!!
"If it's stupid but it works....is it still stupid?" are words to live by.
Thanks man about to do mine as i noticed my upper is leaking a bit might be the gasket thats too hard
Dude, good video. Not many of these on TH-cam. I’m about to do mine. I have an MK7 GTI. It’s exactly the same.
Thanks man!! Glad I could help out, noticed the same thing when I went to look it up myself lol
One 10mm ring ratchet would make this job much much easier

Look up what an ez-out is. There are plenty of videos on how to use them. If you can get a drill in there, you can fix it.

Got the part number by chance? Thanks for pointing that out

And to think I have to do this because the notches inside where the oil cap screws into broke off….anyways great video!
sometime cap itself can fix ur leaking oil around cap oil some thing it's gasket but better to fix in easy way*
how long it takes to replace? 2h?
Took me a hot minute maybe 2 hours if you are a pro I’m not lol
Just curious my A3 has 117K how much oil does your car burn?
Probably about a 1/2 quart over 3.5k miles

Maybe a leak down test? Could be a intercooler hose maybe give those a check on the lower portion?
I have an Audi 2017 a3 quadro plus with an OIL Lekage oil pan and upper timing gasket; how much does this cost material and labor?

Roughly how long did it take to do?
I did this recently. First time. Took me a couple hours. But I took my time. Came out great. This video is a great primer.
Yep, same for me just depends on if you got the right tools and are good with some small spaces!!
On the magnets themselves is a bridge o-ring that’s known to leak and no one seems to replace them
You missed it by the way :)

I just realized the seal is on the Cam adjuster I believe, I’ll try to find a part # if it’s possible to just swap those out
