BAND-MAID have four songs that lyrics are all in English: Don’t let me down, The Dragon Cries, Bestie and SHOW THEM. “Don’t let me down” was written by Japanese male who composed and wrote lyrics as well. “The Dragon Cries” was produced by Tony Visconti (a famous producer who produced David Bowie and T. Rex), and lyrics was written by his friend. “Bestie” was co-written with Mike Einziger from INCUBUS, and lyrics was written by Miku (founder of BAND-MAID) to appreciate their friendship to Mike as well as band members. “SHOW THEM” was co-written with Mexican all female(sisters) rock band The Warning, as BAND-MAID and The Warning met at Aftershock festival back in 2022 and promised to work together, and just released a collaboration MV last week.
At the 2023 Sonic Temple Festival *Mike Einziger* of *Incubus* was so impressed with *BAND-MAID* and wanted to do a collaboration with them so *Bestie* was created .
I missed this one - better late that never. You did a great job. This song really grew on me. Now it just makes me happy, like so many of their songs. I think this song was actually written TO EACH OTHER - which is freaking awesome after 11 years together. God I love this band.
A little atypical for Band-Maid, but "Mikey-san" and the Maids met at a music fest in St. Louis, got to talking and decided to collab (Mike did the main riff and Band-Maid fleshed it out). Incubus toured Japan in May, and in one concert Mike jumped up on stage and they played Bestie together. I love the song -- it's not totally out of keeping with some of their fan-directed songs, like About Us and Memorable.
Iirc this was the third all-English Band-Maid song, but the first where Miku wrote all the lyrics (probably with some input from Mike of Incubus). BUT they just dropped an MV of their collaboration with The Warning that's all-English - altho The Warning are from Mexico so it's a second language for both bands (though The Warning are all fluent English- speakers). Personally I'm eagerly anticipating their next collab in hopes that it's in both Spanish and Japanese (and maybe English too). I find that accents add a lot of charm, and if you hear a vocalist singing in a language you don't know as just another instrument, then different languages often hit like different instruments - more percussive or more fluid, for example.
Bestie, in the vein of other great mid-tempo Band-Maid songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Memorable, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, Wonderland, Awkward, Start Over, Mirage, At the Drop of a Hat and Smile, was co-written by Michael Einziger of Incubus. MISA's playing and bass tone are setting new standards... and Akane's drumming is so in-the-pocket and distinguishable... and Kanami's solo is Daydreaming masterful! The recording and mix are as enjoyable as the song and beautiful MV! And Miku’s English lyrics are heartfelt. Is Band-Maid a band of fashion-forward, trend-setting Besties? 💞 Thx, Mikey, Band-Maid and SeptaSoare! FYI - The Maids just released a "Making of Bestie" on their websites where they explain the song and look of their awesome MV.
And on the "if they often sing in English" question, there are a couple of other songs that are all in English, but i wouldn't favor those over the others. Their music is SO good that you can pretend Saiki's another instrument and just enjoy the heck out of it. In fact if you read the subs you'll miss a lot of what's going on with the instrumentation. (Not so much this song but most Band-Maid.) Oh - and while most of their lyrics are in Japanese, they'll throw in English here and there, and they have a lot of singalongs that are just whoa's, la's, oh's, and what not - that actually make their live shows spectacularly interactive and FUN.
You mentioned tasty melodic guitar leads....and although off topic.....one musician to another. .. please, at your leisure...check out "On with the action" by UFO....I think you may appreciate the work.....thanks for the content
