I mean, I would say the parts you're pointing out from mid-00's emo-pop, as opposed to OG emo from the early-mid 90's, is the pop-punk and hardcore punk elements as opposed to the parts that made emo-pop different, namely the angsty but not necessarily attacking vocals and melody, but I definitely see the similarities you're pointing out. Band-Maid has a unique song for every combination of rock, punk, pop and metal you can come up with, so you're always going to be reminded of something. What BM reminds you of is often going to be what you hold dear. 😊I don't know of any other bands that are compared to ACDC, Guns N Roses and Paramore at the same time, but that sort of is the story of Band-Maid's depth, versatility and variety.
You forgot to mention they also get compared to: Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden and Polyphia. Because all of those bands are definitely in the same category 😜 Edit: And if you listen to 'Bubble', Band-Maid reminds you of Queen.
MISA, MISA, MISA!!! As BandMaid lore has it during their first appearance in the USA the crowd chanted MISA's name repeatedly. It reportedly made quite an impression on the band since they had never performed here before.
More than most bassists, MISA brings interest and even excitement to the bass. It is said she plays "lead bass." And we only get a first name, so gotta make the most of it! MISA MISA MISA!!
Yup, write their own music since the song "Alone", Kanami (lead guitar) is the main composer, Miku (rhythm guitar/backup vocals) main lyricist. All the members add their own touches (MISA- base composition, Akane - drum composition, Saiki - lead vocal and lyrics). They all contribute to the overall song motif and feeling. Check out the documentaries on each member and how they have come together to make this band and make it so special.
Phil, I have one for you from Band-Maid, the song was recently posted on TH-cam. The song is labeled on TH-cam as "BVND-MVID "Honkai" SPIN-OFF". The introduction to the song by MISA, the bassist and Akane, the drummer, is EPIC. I know you WILL LOVE IT!
Kanami is musical mastermind, loving Chopin and Santana. Humble, hardworking genius. Always composes to the whole band, shreds when needs. Magical band, amazing musicians, best friends. I was working 30 years in rockbusiness, seen few thousand gigs, all the major ones multiple times and NEVER seen or heard BETTER band than Band-Maid 🔥❤️ Greatest band of our time. Greets from Finland 🇫🇮🤘 Edit: Yeah, I love The Warning too. Saw them twice in Whiskey January 2020, travelin by plane from Finland. And Yes..There are some toxicity in TWA somehow, don’t know why ☹️ Mostly newer fans, OG-fans are awesome people 🔥❤️
Five very talented musicians dedicated to each other, Maidiacs and their music. Glad you returned to more Band-Maid, Phil, and yes, I am TWA as well. Guess what- they're not the only two bands I listen to! Hehe, you were spot on including that in your intro. What's wrong with loving great tracks from a multitude of artists, and genres for that matter. Live performance shows how tight a band is, and Band-Maid deliver in everything I've seen. Certainly hoping for an extended North American tour one of these days.
I saw them in DC on their 2022 tour and in Charlotte on their 2023 tour. I really missed them this year. I too hope for another North American tour soon.
Kanami (lead guitarist) is the primary composer - but with a lot of help from MISA and Akane. Miku is the primary lyricist - but Saiki (lead singer) has penned about 7 or 8 songs' lyrics - including this song.
Kanami (lead guitar) composes the music, sends a demo to MISA and Akane to add their input, then to Saiki and Miku for their vocal input. The rhythm guitar (Miku's guitar part) is added last. The end result - amazing music.
Kanami the lead guitarist is the main composer writing alomost all of their songs since 2016. Misa the basist and Akane the drummer, are involved by Kanami in the early process of instrumentaion. Miku the rythm guitarist, backing vocalist and band founder, is the main lyricist. Saiki the singer is also now taking parts in the lyrics and act as a kind of quality control for all the band music.
“From now on” could be next, it’s an instrumental, and already for this reason will be a bit different. Although you can argue that Kanami just makes her guitar sing lead.
🏆 You win. You are the first reactor I’ve watched who highlighted that note. That interval. It’s that one note that has always stood out for me since the very first time I heard this song. Call me a crazy nerd, but I’m not the only one who hears this Big Band 1930’s influence on that. If you ever make the connection, you’ll never un-hear it “Blooming” is another, completely different composition that I really look forward to hearing your insight into. Notifications 🔔 are on!
I've always noticed that once in a while, they throw in a dissonant chord, sorta like Kurt Cobain did, and I think it's to add a bit of tension that resolves to something comfortable. It happens in Kanami's guitar work too. It definitely grabs your attention, even if you don't know why.
You have interesting point of view. While most reactors are taken by the insane solo section of the song you pointed out how great that vocal melody was and deep meaning behind it. Would love to hear your take on Forbidden tale. Oh, and don't be afraid of longer videos, Band Maid community loves reactors who have knowledgeable insights like you do.
From Japan They've been together for 12 years and have nearly 140 original songs. They have all kinds of genres, all of which are different and attractive. If you like hard rock similar to Hate, I recommend Dice, puzzles or play, and technical performances, I recommend the instrumental songs From now on or On set, and if you like a different atmosphere, I recommend Influencer or the latest song Forbidden Tale.
The only good thing about 'genre' in music is to help you find stuff you already like, quicker. The bad thing about 'genre' in music is that it stops you discovering anything outside your cosy safe zone. The amount of reactors who only came to Band-Maid because they heard they were Metal is ridiculous. Genre types are also gate-kept by fanatics who would rather trash a band and it's fans then allow anyone to call them (insert favourite genre here) if they do not pass their own specific definition. Band-Maid is Band-Maid. They don't need no steenking genre badges. And Akane always looks so happy because everytime she looks up she see she is in the best band in world. Thanks for your reaction, loved it.
Nice reaction, again! I really like the "duel" between Misa and Kinami in this one. Such skill and speed in their playing, yet they leave room for each other to shine.
Thanks for your third reaction to Band-Maid! I really enjoyed it! Yes, Band-Maid write their songs, except for their early-day songs (such as Thrill and Freedom). We Band-Maid fans are known to recommend very different songs as we are musically diverse. I’m from a funk rock background, so I would recommend funkier Band-Maid songs to you. 1. Unleash!!!!! (music video): Influence from latin hip-hop 2. Influencer (music video): J-rock + rap + funky bass 3. Different: Influence from four on the floor and classical music (specifically Sabre Dance) My favorite Band-Maid song is Giovanni but it’s audio only. It’s a hybrid song of intense metal and jazzy hip-hop.
Pleasantly surprised and stoked seeing you react to Band-Maid again. Kanami and Miku earned the honors of writing and composing their own music with "Alone". It only took them 2 years to win autonomy
what i love most about this is that the lyrics clearly insinuate shes hating on an ex and then they really make the guitar/bass duel sound like an arguing couple
@Leet - nope it is not even luke warm. The guitar/bass is no duel but a conversation. They are having fun. And - its not an ex, its a friend's (probably) now ex. So - if this is what you love the most then you have to contemplate what to do now. Personally I love the song, the band and the girls the most. PO.
Good spot re the music style. But that is just what Band-Maid are- a mix of 70s, 80s, 90s and early 2000s pop/punk and rock. Plus a sprinkling of groove blues, jazz and prog. Their genre is Band-Maid.
This is the song that got me into the band, I clicked on a Babymetal mix playlist in TH-cam and suddenly this popped up. That solo battle made me immediatly add it to my playlist.
Really liked your reaction. IT’s the lead guitarist, kanami, who writes the basis of the song and passes it on to Misa to write the Bass and Akane to write the drums (Who could tell those 2 what they need to do?). Miku usually writes the lyrics, but in this case it was Saiki.
If you don't remember the guitarist's name, always think of Godzilla, she is immune to everything and the energy she gives off makes us shine in the dark.
Only Saiki can dish out those brutal cut-down lyrics and then end it with a thank you and a huge smile. I am sure that others have said that Kanami is the main songwriter and Miku is the main lyricist. However, Saiki is credited with the lyrics for this one. Their early songs were from outside writers for the most part. The song Alone was the first song written by Kanami that their management approved.
Kanami is genetically incapable of composing a repeating section of music. Like, she abhors doing the same thing musically twice in any song. There will always be something different! Great vid, and there are some really different songs that are so interesting from a composition standpoint, very much more prog, like Black Hole, Giovanni, Forbidden Tale - would be very interesting to see how you react. And btw, you were not wrong about the Emo thing. One of their genre's early on was definitely pop punk/emo. You will really hear that in some of their earlier stuff for sure.
The Misa Misa Misa thing is because bassist and xylophone players are the most despised musicians on the plant. At least until a cat comes along who is FUCKING AWESOME. Misa is that cat.....dressed in black.....with no shoes. And the Bourbon/ beer thing? Just means that sweet girl is one of us. Misa does not play bass. Misa plays lead bass.
Ok, I hear you Phil. Yes, the similarities to "Give 'Em Hell, Kid" are definitely there. Got to admit I enjoy these kinds of songs too. I don't see any negative about emo, pop-punk compositions, and I think you are perfectly justified to categorize this song as such. Heck, you are definitely not the first one to realize how much of emo can be found in this song, and hey, emo can be angry too right? Love it!
There are many great songs by them that I recommend. "Secret My Lips" "Awkward" live "Moratorium" live "Don't You Tell Me" live "Hankai" live Spinoff "Brooming" "Without Holding Back" "Puzzle" live "I'll" live Spinoff
“You’re allowed to like more than one band!”…….Thank you, instant subscriber. I get so sick and tired of the “competition” thing! One of the many things about Band-Maid is that they rarely play the verses exactly the same. The 2nd, or 3rd, verse will have something different whether it be rhythmically, melodically or structurally.
Kanami the lead guitarist composes the music. Miku the the rythmn guitarist is the main lyricist. However I do believe Saiki the lead singer wrote the lyrics of this song.
I knew I recognized it. The guitarist is Kanami. She is playing a PRS (Paul Reed Smith) guitar. Dany plays a PRS guitar. I don't know anything about guitars but I saw a similarity in Kanami's guitar. Looked it up, yup. So there you go.
If it means anything Kanami is the first Japanese artist to ever receive a PRS Signature guitar, not only that hand delivered by Paul Reed Smith himself. Dany from the Warning has had the same honor and both of them together did a promotional video for PRS explaining what they like about PRS.
@@roygillotti4615both great guitar players! Just some minor clarifications to try to avoid confusion, Dany has had several PRS guitars including her red Custom 24-08 and blue Custom 24 but to my knowledge does not have a Signature model. She may have had a guitar personally delivered by Paul Reed Smith, I simply don't know. She and Kanami are both PRS Official Artists. Kanami recently got a PRS Private Stock guitar for her own use, her Signature model (well deserved!) which was limited to 200 guitars for sale worldwide is the Kanami Limited Edition Custom 24-08. I believe it sold out quickly. PRS has a cool video about this starring Kanami, plus there's info on their website, at music store sites, various articles about it, etc.
Genre, genre, genre, why does everyone try labeling a genre to Band Maid? How about just simply masters of music, they just make music that sounds good no matter how or why other musicians think it should have been done. What they do just works, that's all that matters. If you feel it's so important to label them, you can go by this quote from the founder of this band, Miku Kobato, who says we 're not a pop idol group, don't judge us by our looks, we want to blow you away with our heavy rock sound. I found them while searching for classic rock, not metal, not pop, not headbanger etc. They are a hard rock band that can and do also play some beautiful ballads, instrumentals and acoustic music. Black Hole is as close to metal as they have played. If you want metal, go to their friends Lovebites for good metal music. Band Maid is a rock band, and very good at it, period!
Great reaction, Phil. Like others have said, you add lots to songs we know well. I haven't stopped listening to BAND-MAID since discovering them early this year. You've picked 2 killers to start and there are so many more. Choose Me, Freedom, Unleash!!!!! are just a few. Plus, From Now On or Onset for instrumentals, and Sayonakidori for a fun surprise
I think the pushback you probably got was due to usually the emo/pop-punk type of stuff usually just has eighth-note chords being strummed without leads (and usually the same every verse/chorus) like in the example you used. At least, that's what I usually think of when those genres are brought up. Band-Maid does have some of that sometimes, but usually the second verse is changed from the first and there are usually leads and little licks thrown in. I guess it's that ignoring the overall chords and feel, the actual parts tend to be a lot simpler in the emo stuff and some people look at that negatively (or at least take that comparison as meaning Band-Maid's music is simple or "easy"). Not to mention, part of it is probably the particular songs you've happened to listen to. They have other songs that have a much more classic hard rock feel. One of their songs (my favorite actually), Dice, has a riff that reminds me of Slither by Velvet Revolver, which isn't exactly classic but it has that feel. That one I actually prefer the studio version. It's on a song by song basis whether I like the studio or live versions of songs better.
So in one interview they host pointed out that not everyone was wearing maid customs, Miku denied that and said that Misa was an Assassin-Maid (or Maid-Assassin I forget which order). Misa prefers to be bare-foot on stage, thus Bare-foot Assassin. In a different animated video Miku and Saiki were talking and Miku (of course it was her) said something like "we should call Misa "Misa! Misa! Misa!" because the fans chant it all the time at shows." (Saiki was trying not to laugh the entire time, she is usually a very stoic person.) As for the drinking, Misa has terrible stage fright and used alcohol to calm her nerves in the early years, she has since reduced consumption as it wasn't healthy (they do all consume alcohol and from what I understand Miku can drink everyone under the table).
All songs are started from lead guitar Kanami's composition and then each member pitch in to finish the song. Miku, the rythem guitar, usually is the main writer for the lyrics. For this song, lead signer Saiki wrote the lyrics. So far, both Miku and Saiki are super to fit the perfect words to the music not just meaning wise but music rythem wise English or Japanes.
Welcome back to Band-Maid. I think everyone covered all of your questions already. As for the emo thing, you're not the first and you do make a good case for it. I just say, quoting CC, "Band-Maid doing Band-Maid things." Everything now days is so subjective. No negativity needed...just enjoy the music. And if someone disagrees, so be it, we all have different opinions and taste. Anyway, welcome back and don't be so long to return to the Maids. Suggestions..."From Now On" OMV is spectacular! "Blooming" OMV is amazing! "Forbidden Tale" OMV is from their latest album "Epic Narratives" and this song takes you on an epic ride. "Don't You Tell Me" OLMV, from the same Yokohama Arena concert as "Hate?" is another awesome live. Maybe do a two for, with the OMV first and then the live. PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘
Thanks for the reaction a few suggestions would be Moratorium (live), Awkward (live), Honkai ( live- spinoff show), and the two-fer Manners and BlackHole live.
Most fans are gonna steer u to their kick ass side. They are so much more. Check this side out. And, do urself a favor and also check them out acoustically, catharsis and sayonakidori.
Phil , my favorite song is " Freedom " , as being American and raised on 1960's music , BAND MAID is the Greatest BAND to come out in 40 - 50 year's , the Originality & uniqueness has no comparison to any other BAND ❤ !
4:26 Funny you should mention "Bendy, kind of scoop note", Phil, because that's one of the things that caused a certain singer/guitarist in a certain band of Mexican sisters to really grab my attention, which quickly evolved into a full bore obsession. 🙂
Finally. I have been waiting for you to get back to Band-Maid. 😀 Yes, they write their own songs (They did not in the beginning, but the album 'Brand New Maid' (2016) included the song 'Alone' which was written by the band, and since then they have written almost all theie songs themselves). Some will tell you that Kanami writes the songs. And when they started writing their own songs, this was mostly true. So Kanami did have to push the others to be more active in the song writing process. For the song 'Blooming', Kanami just told everyone she was tired of always coming up with ideas, so they all had to write 'something' for their next practice session. Then, she would put it all together. It worked, and they all participate more today. Today the witing process is: Kanami (lead guitarist) comes up with a demo. (She writes all the time, even on tour) Song is sent to MISA (bass) and Akane (drums). They fill in their instruments. (Akane has complained that Kanami sometimes put drum patterns in the demo that can only be played with 3 arms 😅) Miku (rhythm guitar and second vocalist) writes the lyrics. Saiki (lead vocalist) decides when the song is finished. (Or if it needs a little extra drum here, or some bass there) They do not follow this recipe for all songs. For this song, 'Hate?', Saiki wrote the lyrics. But the process seems to work for them. Oh, and 'Blooming' (the homework song) turned out great. I highly recommend you check it out. (Do the Music video, there isn't an official live)
Welcome back Phil. I think it was June 13 when you did Domination. So many awesome songs to go. We will all be very old at this rate, but that is not a complaint. Cheers.
they have over 100 original songs. Many (but not all) songs usually start with Kanami (lead guitarist) writing the main sound of the music. Often Misa and Akane (bass/drums) then add their input for their parts. Then Miku (rhythm guitar, background singer) writes most of the lyrics. But there are many other combinations. Like this song had Saiki write the lyrics. Sometimes they each write their own parts. So the Kanami=music, Miku=lyrics is just a general thing, but not always. As for style, they're more hard rock with a punk influence than emo.
What a great deep dive. It's not my favourite band maid song, though 😅 I am very curious what you will say about "Corallium", another song with lyrics from Saiki (perfectly pronounced, by the way). That's one of my favourites. There is a very good live video but sadly not released officially 😮
Thanks for yet another great reaction, and analysis, too. Belatedly subscribed! I've caught BAND-MAID live, including this particular arrangement of HATE?. The duel in the middle is built out, relative to the album version. It was just as awesome, on a smaller (if sold out) stage during their USA tour. So, I'll make a suggestion, too, of another high-talent band I've seen live. I suggest you check out HANABIE. "Hah-nah-bee-eh". Best viewed without *any* hints, other than you're bound to be entertained, and have a lot of say. You'll get some views, too. Try "いとをかしMyType", their newest music video. It's the only song, that I'm aware of, about Myers-Briggs personality types. And, if you like that, try their LIVE performance of "Pardon Me, I Have to Go Now." They really are like that, live.
Awesome brother! Cuz of The Warning I found Band Maid & cuz of Band Maid I found Nemophila. There 3 bands are blowing my mind still for years now. 3 great rabbit holes that freak kick ass. I hope you dive in to more Band Maid & find Nemophila if you haven’t already!🤘🏼Cheers brother🍺
The Warning imo is the true rock n roll guardian angel. They seem to carry the traditional hard rock sound while Band-Maid has more progressive edge and less genre specific, (as you said, 'hybrid') the very reason I like Band-Maid. BTW I've grown to like Show Them fair bit.
Thanks Phil--great insights. I definitely hear the similarity between "Hate?" and the Chemical Romance song you mentioned. One of the things I love about Band Maid is that even though Akane will have periods of relative drum simplicity, they never last long. She'll inject a great fill, often featuring her double kick. And on their latest album Epic Narratives she is beginning to remind me of Bobby Jarzombek's drumming on Fates Warning album Long Day Good Night. His is God tier, but she seems to be leaning in that direction. Cheers.
A long time ago in a BM Reaction chat I said that the new way to say " Cheers" = "Kampai" in Japan was ""Misa Misa Misa". That is the way that the fans call to her at concerts. Please watch "Miku's Magic Spell Time" videos to see the interaction between BM and the fans. Btw, in the new collab between BabyMetal and Bloodywood, I think Bloodywood sounds like Ladybeard in the Manju song. Soooo, usually fans don't care too much when reactors draw serious comparisons with songs sounding very similar. It might be because a long time ago serious haters were saying that all Japanese bands were just copycats. There really were people that hated all Japanese Women Bands about 7 years ago, that I know of. I got banned several times for my vigorous protection of Band- Maid, Lovebites and BabyMetal. The "reactors" that trashed our Goddesses got trashed by a few of us defenders. Nowadays no haters of Asian women bands can be seen. Peace and Love, po. World Metal and Rock is a Miricle.
I know about Band-Maid and MCR because of The Warning, Philnewbo (I too am a newbie). Also Freeze the Fall, Plush, The Sixsters, Nova Twins, Voice of Baceprot, Muse, Dead Poet Society, etc etc
So Kanami (lead guitar) composes the music for the most part, but has an interesting process to do so. She'll write a part, play a demo of what she wrote, and then send it to the member that will play that part. Then, the member makes changes/suggestions and sends it back to Kanami. She's said that songs always turn out much cooler than she imagined them this way.
also if you want to see their versatility on full display, check their official live video for Manners & Black Hole. All I'll say is that they're two VERY different songs.
ARIGATO for your reaction. There are many talented female bands in Japan. NEMOPHILA, KOIAI, HAGANE, TRIDENT, HANABIE, GACHARIC SPIN, ALDIOUS, and etc. Especially, BAND-MAID and LOVEBITES are the another level bands. Please watch LOVEBITES. " HOLY WAR ", " SWAN SONG ", " A FROZEN SERENADE ".
Maybe I haven't read far enough, but I don't see anyone bringing up the song subject. Saiki's best friend discovered her boyfriend was cheating on her during Covid. She was shattered. Saiki was angry on her behalf. She poured that anger into "Hate?" and verbally reams the guy over. Mean, and funny. Read the translation...
It wouIt's true! In fact a Scottish Reactor, Markabusi, would always put each BAND-MAID songs on an EMO SCALE as to how Emo each song is. It would be on an X Y Axis, with X being Twinkly Guitars and Y being Overwrought Singing. BTW, please don't pronounce the i in Saiki twice, otherwise (Sigh-Key) becomes Sigh-icky instead of Psyche.
17:06 What I get is, yeah power chords - but - Band Maid is a lot fuller and smoother 😁 Pop/Punk is still a WHAT ⁉ to me 'cause punk hated pop SO MUCH 🤬 😼 Fun reaction 👏🏽
Wow that emo comparison was interesting! I've wondered if Hate! was commissioned to drive a single, simple angry message, so Kanami chose a genre which is good at that and in honor of a single message, kept the arrangement fairly simple compared to a lot of their music. I imagine you'd enjoy the live Manners / Black Hole double feature to see a couple more points on the star of their styles (and help me decipher some things!). Each has an interesting back story too. Lotsa pop punk in their early days.
There's fun phrasing contrasts between the instruments. The challenge is every instrument is going all the time and the song itself doesn't have any space to breath or have texture/phrasing. My ears were tired out before halfway point by the barrage. I think you could keep the structure mostly as is, but occasionally drop an instrument then bring it back in to both highlight another part and create dynamic flow for the song. Especially the endless patter of the drums, double especially the double kick, makes it too sonically dense. Also instruments could join together in unison for key phrases then break apart again. Composition mastery is probably their biggest weakness at this point. Finally always playing at full speed limits what you can do with dynamics. Reminds me of the rules of essay composition, the key part of the final draft is usually taking lots of stuff out to focus the essay. Same here to focus the song itself. The MCR comparison was great because it shows the similarities, but you can also hear how their more mature arrangement let's the song breath and have structure.
When they were holding and bending that note, I thought they were singing, "dai kirai", which is the closest to "Hate" in Japanese, (big dislike). But they weren't. They were singing something completely different. They were singing, "naikara", which just means "because there is no", but it has that sound. Saiki wrote this, not Miku. She said she just liked the way it sounded in English, "I Hate You!", but I'm pretty sure this is about an eX. I wouldn't want to be him! Usually Miku writes most all of the lyrics. Kanami writes all the music and then gives a demo to MISA and Akane to do their thing with it. And, yes, the MISA MISA MISA!!! is an inside joke that started because all of the MISA Guys over on her side of the stage would start chanting her name, especially when she was about to drink from her whiskey bottle. Now she only drinks beer at shows after a particularly bad hangover.
great reaction PZ.! so you want a pop punk from them.? go listen to their first album, Maid in Japan.. for MV, try Alone, The Non Fiction Days, Puzzle, Dont you tell ME, and Start Over.. last is the song, You ( audio only) for your straight up emo pop punk vibe.. Po.!
Yeah, that "janai" note, agreed, mmmmmm. That word negates, sort of like the word "not" in English, but usually after the fact. So the phrase is basically, "That will work... NOT!" With that long note emphasizing the NOT part. Note that's based on my very rudimentary understanding of Japanese, so somebody who understands better, please correct me if I'm wrong there. If you want an emo comparison, one I've been making since the song came out, compare Band-Maid's song Forbidden Tale with My Chemical Romance's song the Black Parade. They SOUND nothing alike, but from a composition POV, the whole stacking up epic parts is very much the same sort of thing. Both brilliant compositions.

Maidiacs are as different as Band Maid songs. I remember a reaction channel that had an emo rating for songs and the Maidiacs tried to request songs that he would give high ratings.

Greets from Finland 🇫🇮🤘
Edit: Yeah, I love The Warning too. Saw them twice in Whiskey January 2020, travelin by plane from Finland. And Yes..There are some toxicity in TWA somehow, don’t know why ☹️ Mostly newer fans, OG-fans are awesome people 🔥❤️
She writes demos. But rest is team work, that's why song writing is always credited to the whole band, not Kanami specifically.
@ 🙈 Have a good day, sir.
🤘🫶💜
I saw them in DC on their 2022 tour and in Charlotte on their 2023 tour. I really missed them this year. I too hope for another North American tour soon.
I do like more than one band, BAND-MAID, BAND-MAIKO and Cluppo PO!
@@airlinesecret6725 PO!!!
I like those three too, but also The Warning and Rolling Quartz!
@@waynebenedict4609. Yeah. Rolling Quartz is extremely underrated. And I really love the singer's voice. Girl was made to sing rock.
Agreed!
If you ever make the connection, you’ll never un-hear it
“Blooming” is another, completely different composition that I really look forward to hearing your insight into.
Thank you!! 🫶💜🤘
From Japan
They've been together for 12 years and have nearly 140 original songs.
Great reaction, Phil! Thanks for getting back to the Maids 🎉
💜🤘🤠
That "sweet girl" vocalist just *itch-stomping some giant ego into oblivion with Hate? makes me smile. I somehow love the juxtaposition.❤
Finally *Phil Zero* has come back! to *BAND-MAID* 😁🍺 _(Check out _*_Alone_*_ if you like pop punk)_ 😉

Nice reaction, again! I really like the "duel" between Misa and Kinami in this one. Such skill and speed in their playing, yet they leave room for each other to shine.
Ooooo PZ doing Band-Maid again! HERE FOR THIS! 🤘

(music video): Influence from latin hip-hop
2. Influencer (music video): J-rock + rap + funky bass
3. Different: Influence from four on the floor and classical music (specifically Sabre Dance)
My favorite Band-Maid song is Giovanni but it’s audio only. It’s a hybrid song of intense metal and jazzy hip-hop.
Pleasantly surprised and stoked seeing you react to Band-Maid again. Kanami and Miku earned the honors of writing and composing their own music with "Alone". It only took them 2 years to win autonomy
Listen to Toi et Moi off of Epic Narratives! Instantly became my favorite Band Maid song!
I do love your reactions and how you break things down. Very cool. 🤙
💜🤘🫶 thank you!
what i love most about this is that the lyrics clearly insinuate shes hating on an ex and then they really make the guitar/bass duel sound like an arguing couple
Not an ex PO !
PO.

3.5 hours, 33 songs setlist. This was #27
Good spot re the music style. But that is just what Band-Maid are- a mix of 70s, 80s, 90s and early 2000s pop/punk and rock. Plus a sprinkling of groove blues, jazz and prog. Their genre is Band-Maid.
That's the great thing about B-M. They can bring the nostalgia because they don't strictly stay in one box. They have fans from all generations.

💜💜💜
You want pop-punk? Listen to Alone or Unleash!!!!!
And I've always contended that Band-Maid is closer to punk than to metal.
Enjoyed your analysis. Tanks

Their are insanely good fusion Japanese female bands to check out. Excellent musicianship and a lot of timing changes. Of course rapid rhythmically.
4:26 Funny you should mention "Bendy, kind of scoop note", Phil, because that's one of the things that caused a certain singer/guitarist in a certain band of Mexican sisters to really grab my attention, which quickly evolved into a full bore obsession. 🙂
@@CraigCholar those notes will get ya 🤠
Finally. I have been waiting for you to get back to Band-Maid. 😀
Yes, they write their own songs (They did not in the beginning, but the album 'Brand New Maid' (2016) included the song 'Alone' which was written by the band, and since then they have written almost all theie songs themselves).
Today the witing process is:
Kanami (lead guitarist) comes up with a demo. (She writes all the time, even on tour)
Song is sent to MISA (bass) and Akane (drums). They fill in their instruments. (Akane has complained that Kanami sometimes put drum patterns in the demo that can only be played with 3 arms 😅)
Miku (rhythm guitar and second vocalist) writes the lyrics.
Saiki (lead vocalist) decides when the song is finished. (Or if it needs a little extra drum here, or some bass there)
They do not follow this recipe for all songs. For this song, 'Hate?', Saiki wrote the lyrics.
But the process seems to work for them.
Oh, and 'Blooming' (the homework song) turned out great. I highly recommend you check it out. (Do the Music video, there isn't an official live)
I never got why My Chemical Romance gets so much disrespect. I fucking loved those guys.
Awesome! Thanks for getting back to the Maids! Live Maid is the best Maid!
Agreed!!! 🤘🤘🤘
What a great deep dive. It's not my favourite band maid song, though 😅
I am very curious what you will say about "Corallium", another song with lyrics from Saiki (perfectly pronounced, by the way).
Oh, I've loved that comparison with MCR. Excellent!.
Cheers.
No God is a great song and has an amazing riff!
Thanks PZ! 🎉

Misa Misa Misa ......badass bass beast🤘🤘
It's amazing how Band-Maid has rewritten the laws of nature: Hate? brings Love! 😖--->🎀--->😍Thx, Phil!
Writing process start with Kanami comming with the main theme, then every one work together to pull up the song. Miku writing most of the lyrics.
Hi Phil great you checked this one, if you want to dive deeper in Band-Maid check "Onset" or "From Now On" think you'll enjoy!
And your reaction to the guitar and bass duel is exactly what I expected! The lead guitar name is Kanami
Just pick any BAND-MAID song. Odds are it will become your new favorite.
MISA!!! MISA!!! MISA!!! 🥃🥃🥃🤙🏽Another great "conversation " between MISA and Kanami
MISA MISA MISA!!
@PhilZero have a good holiday season 🎄☃️
17:06 What I get is, yeah power chords - but - Band Maid is a lot fuller and smoother 😁
Pop/Punk is still a WHAT ⁉ to me 'cause punk hated pop SO MUCH 🤬 😼
Fun reaction 👏🏽
And Band-Maid's music just got labeled into one more genre. How many are there already and how far can it go?
@@fsveins62 let’s go for the record! 🤘
@@PhilZero Well, I think at least 4 genres may have been detected in just one song (Forbidden Tale) from their last album.
I believe BAND-MAID has established their own genre, so there is ONLY 1 - the 'BAND-MAID' genre.
Ain't nothing wrong with emo! Great analysis.
I have no problem with you associating them with Emo and no, you're not wrong.
great reaction PZ.! so you want a pop punk from them.? go listen to their first album, Maid in Japan.. for MV, try Alone, The Non Fiction Days, Puzzle, Dont you tell ME, and Start Over.. last is the song, You ( audio only) for your straight up emo pop punk vibe..
Please check out NEMOPHILA next. Rabbit Hole style, like ALL NEMO like you did with The Warning.
oh man.. What a missed opportunity to say "Two Worlds Collide"

Btw, big fan of yours! Love The Warning videos that you do. I have a block of tickets for The Warning concert this February at the Auditorio Telmex (GDL). 😁
@@bluecavalry WOW. You’re living the dream! My wife is from GDL too, and we visit every year. I’m trying to fit one of TW concerts into our schedule in February as well!
Maidiacs are as different as Band Maid songs. I remember a reaction channel that had an emo rating for songs and the Maidiacs tried to request songs that he would give high ratings.
I suggest the Daydreaming MV for something new. You've only scratched the surface, my new friend! 😊
