I love my tertiary purplish pink color I got as well as my tertiary blue-green ocean color. Was really fun. I plan on making more with different primaries and see what I can get.
Thank you for making that “mistake” it was transforming for me. I made a “mistake” while painting and after reflecting on you doing that I just kept with it and it ended up turning out great. Bought your book here in South Africa 🇿🇦.. Got my tubes of paint .my paint brushes. my paper.... My lessons on colour theory can finally get going..... Thank you my paper.
I learnt SO much in this! I really gel with your teaching style, you're human on camera & make mistakes & that's funny & that's what learning should be like. Thanks for being inspiring!
I’m working my way through your Everyday Watercolor Sketchbook and this was my first watercolor project. Embarrassingly, I purchased most of your recommended supplies without ever picking up a brush, but I’m that confident your tutorials will help me succeed. I’ve been watching for weeks and yes, they are that good! I’m not looking for perfection in myself… I just need a way to relax my mind and have a little (or a lot 🎉) of fun!! I’m over-the-moon excited to get started!! Thank you for sharing so much! 🖼️🎨🖌️😃
Thank you for your instructive method of teaching. I am finding myself very excited to learn how to do water color. At the present, I have been making little ornaments on wood slices that have turned out very well so I’m excited to try my hand at and you kind of art. I have a broken wrist right now so I am watching as many tutorials as I can before I actually begin the creative process. Today was the first day I tried to do a colour wheel with watercolours and it worked out well. Again, thank you
Dang it. I started watching this before bedtime. Now, I am about to burst with wanting to start my own color wheel. New sub. here. I found the episode about how you went from painting not as good flowers, to painting great flowers. I thought: Hey, my flowers suck, and I don’t want them to suck...lol Edit: Forgot to add my favorite color. It was the yellow-green and all three hues.
Jenna, I am so happy to have found your channel! I am just starting out on my watercolour journey and yours is such a wonderful comprehensive series of videos that I felt I should comment to ah thank you! I see that your book is available on Amazon Canada so I will definitely be ordering it. I look forward to watching all your videos as I love your teaching style and you are an amazing artist. Much love 🇨🇦
As for me color mixing is such a meditative process so I always forget about time) I love it very much and train my skills in it as often as I can) Thank you to remind me to do it again, Jenna!
Im learning so much through your videos on this channel. I’m recently retired and accomplishing something that I’ve always wanted to learn, thus I’m a newbie to the watercolor world. Thank you for your excellent videos and books. I own both of your books, but at this time I’m mainly using the Everyday Watercolor book. I completed my color wheel and I’m very proud of it. Thanks again Jenna.✨🙏🏻✨
This helped me understand the relationships of hues and values, primary, secondary and tertiary. Very helpful. Painted my first color wheel ever. Thank you!
I did it!!!!!!! Thank you so much. I'm a complete beginner and had not found any online courses or lessons and did not know where to start. This was extremely helpful, love your channel.
ok you are SOOOO helpful. I have been resisting getting back into painting because imposter syndrome paralysis but your lessons are so welcoming, easy to follow, encouraging and fun. I really really appreciate it!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I've not used water colour much and hoping to grow in confidence through your videos etc. I love your relaxed teaching style and subtle music in the background. Just completed my first color wheel 😍
Jenna, thank you for these videos. I'm a "Newbie" to any kind of painting, but I find working w/watercolors to be so soothing. Your personality is delightful and your instructions are easy to follow. Again, Thank You! BTW just purchased your book "Everyday Watercolor"
That was fun. I enjoyed the tutorial. My favorite color is purple and all the violets that go with it. But I do also love that blue...in every fashion.
@@JennaRaineyChannel the TH-cam tutorial was amazing. I was going to mix tertiary colors from secondary colors which shows how much I need to read the book and pay attention to your tutorials. Thank you!
This is the fourth time I’ve come back to this video since it aired and I still laugh and have so much fun listening to you guys. It reminds me to not be so “anal” with all my paintings (which is something I literally always struggle with and end up regretting!). I love that you didn’t have the oopsie edited out when you started with red-orange instead of yellow-orange next to the yellow. I mean, I think I love you for that. 😂 (No, seriously, I love you for that 🤭) It just means the world to me, and I’m sure other Type B artists, when a very successful artist and teacher shows that they, too, can make mistakes… besides, it gives you the opportunity to also show how it can be fixed! So, win-win…win. Lol Jenna, you’re awesome and THANK YOU for including downloads bc most of the time, the math in art is what takes me the longest and can often times be the MOST anal part of composition, for me. I could go on, but, suck it. Lol I’m done now. On to painting my newest RBY color wheel with different hues I originally painted it with, which I’ll then use when moving on to creating a new color chart. ❤🎨👩🏻🎨❤
Thanks SO much for the support, I'm glad you landed on my channel. I hope my tutorials help you in learning watercolor. I have a watercolor basics playlist of videos that'll be a big help, you can find all the videos here: th-cam.com/play/PLdb2U9SHuFlLKHCUZIzzSsvd8_z8I9JcR.html
Thank you for giving me permission to be type b. I don’t like to have to worry about neatness! I just want to create! Within reason.......let go of being ocd, as long as we can create beautiful things! Love your programs Jenna. So inspiring!
Not orange? When I mix magenta and yellow I get orange color... Edit: "On the color wheel long used by painters, and in traditional color theory, red is one of the three primary colors, along with blue and yellow. Painters in the Renaissance mixed red and blue to make violet: Cennino Cennini, in his 15th-century manual on painting, wrote, "If you want to make a lovely violet colour, take fine lac [red lake], ultramarine blue (the same amount of the one as of the other) with a binder";" (by en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red#In_color_theory_and_on_a_computer_screen) Well, if we stick to traditional painting, red is primary. What you are talking about is a color model used to print, so I think it does not really pertain to the watercolors.
That is right! Red is not a color that can't be mixt, it can. The color you cant get with red and blue in the triad is light turquoise/teal and magenta, it is impossible while using red and blue. With phthalo blue and magenta you can almost get a ultramarine blue hue. Magenta and yellow makes red, just a itty bitty yellow though or it will be red-orange. How painters from the past was painting is not a indication of "true primary colors" they did not have some of the pigments we have today. When only using three colors it can be hard to mix some colors since we dont have perfect magenta, cyan and yellow wich is why many promot a split primary color wheel or a triad of mid tones like cobalt blue and permanent alizarin crimson with a yellow. CMY is primary colors when it comes to mixing watercolors, acrylics, oil etc, but when mixing light rays red, yellow and blue are the primary colors that can't be mixed.
Thank you very mutch, this was a feelgoodexperience, thank you❣Now I'm here a second time cause I got it wrong the first try when I got lost in the wheel but now it's corrected.
Another amazing tutorial. I think I am finally beginning to understand the colour wheel. 😀 my favourite colour is the purple i made. It was so exciting to watch the colour move / transition from one to another. I am so inspired to continue painting. Thank you.
Thank you - following along with this tutorial and the colour grid one has helped a lot with my brush work too. Finally getting into using my materials! I used a Phthalo Blue (Daniel Smith) with a Cotman Cadmium Red Deep Hue (I suspect the cotman red was yellowy) and it led to a very stormy looking dark grey colour which I decided was my favourite on this wheel, more will be created in the future I suspect.
This is very relaxing to do. I just got into watercolor and your vids are perfect for where I’m at with it. I think I put way too much pigment on my brush. Gonna have to let my paints dry out. Thanks for all the knowledge!
you are incredible, thank you SO much for posting these videos!! I love to make charts in general, so it's great for both play and practice during burnout (and anytime) :)
This is great Jenna, I have obviously gone through this in your book, but I am still “struggling” and would like to delve more into this; going through it “live” will certainly help. In the book I am at the dragon fruit stage (I got once again distracted with a really fun “Monet-ish” landscape!), they look weird, but great! Must see if I can find one around here (England) and try one!! Lots of love xxxx
Hey friend from England! Thanks so much for sharing a part of your process. I love to hear what people are painting and how it’s going. I hope this tutorial is a fun one for you to paint along to!
So basically when using color opposites the way to use both in a work of art is to choose one that will be more of a main color, say Prussian Blue, and then use say a warm orange in only very small accenting amounts. This livens up the visual party without major eyestrain. Do I have that right?
Hi, I couldn't get a copy of the colour wheel from your download thingy, but it's ok, I loved this teaching video. Thank you for sharing so much free on here. I have ordered your books on Ebay. I got the paints mostly but I need to get a couple more from your suggestions. I appreciate your tutorials so so much!
Type A, Type B…means nothing to me 😂😂😂 one day I hope to be as confident in color as you are. Thank you so much for the excellent color theory tutorial and a way to understand it through doing.❤️
Always amazing (except for the too many ads, but I hung in there where I would usually switch to another video because, hey, it was you guys..fave real people lol). I am totally going to watch again, but this time, paint along with you. I mostly use Daniel Smith, Sennilier and Holbein so mine will look different, but the theory will be the same. My favorite color is Payne’s Blue Gray by Daniel Smith... I love all it’s tonal values. I know sounds boring, but for me it either punches up, defines or integrates other colors. Thanks so much for the suck you...made me laugh on a blue day lol lol.
Hey Cher! I know those ads are a vibe-kill. I'm going to seriously look into started a Patreon to offer ad-free content for like $2 or $3 a month. It's just SO much work to do these tutorials for literally free and get zero compensation, so we leave them in (even tho we really don't get much, it's still nice to get something). SO glad you're loving the tutorials and I very much appreciate your willingness to get through those pesky ads to watch my videos. That means a lot. ❤️ Haha, and yes, math can suck it. 😂
That was great insight!!! Thanks!!!What 6 colors ? I know you said Mary Blue, but I already have colors and really don't want to buy any more. Thank you!
Hi Jenna, is the color wheel guide still available for download? The link redirects to the e-book and I don't see the template included. Thanks! p.s. very excited to read through the e-book soon!
Awesome video as always! Do you have a video for how you organize yor colors on your pallet? I've been building my selection of Windsor Newton over the past year and need to organize a pallet! Thanks Jenna!
Thank you for your video, it is so valuable! I have a question, though. Last two years I spent some money on collecting watercolors, so now I have different types of yellow, green etc. So my question is, which colors should I use for this exercise? Are there specific colors to use in the color wheel? I have especially doubts which blue should I use (cobalt, or maybe my favorite, phthalo blue?) Thank you in advance! :)
I'm having trouble accessing the color wheel guide. It just links back to your ebook. Is there a different link for it? Thank you for all you do for us watercolor novices!
Hi Jenna , I have just bought your book Everday watercolours. What size pad block do I need to buy for your book and to start doing the exercises, colour wheels , flowers exercises etc.
Bought your beautiful book and signed up for your course. Having trouble finding the color wheel template in the link you provided. The link leads to the ebook. Is the pdf color wheel in there?
Is the color wheel template still available anywhere? When I click the link it just brings me to the beginner book. I am definitely one of those people who can’t math.
Hi Jenna in your everyday watercolour book I just bought , you have mentioned your colours but its not clear which ones. For example Winsor Green ( which shade - blue shade, or Yellow shade ? As there is a big difference in the tone ? Best Wishes Ruth
Hmmm. My computer and printer are "not talking to each other" these days! If anyone else has that problem, trace a circle, cut it out, and fold it to make the 6, at least, divisions. Those can be divided "by eye" easily enough. I'm excited to make this color wheel! Really!
Question ! I have heard or read that in mixing secondary colors to use a warm and cool color ex: warm red and cool blue vs like scarlet lake and Cobalt blue. Any thoughts?
take a cold blue and cold red than you creat a beautiful violett! (or the real primary cyan and magenta). the violett in the video is very muddy because she mix warm and cold tones.
Hi Sherry! I take tubes and put them into a palette and preferably let them dry before using (it saves paint that way). I personally don't like using pans, they're good for travel, but I can't get certain brushes to mix the way I want.
Math is NOT "hard", It's just something you have to work at learning. It's just like learning a foreign language. I LOVE math; the more advanced, the better!!!

Amen, girl. I come back to this video pretty frequently (fourth time in a year) and always need to remember to stop being so anal! Lol

Magenta and Yellow makes Red. CMY are primaries.

Don’t confuse with printing process color
I LOVE your hard works for tutorials and clear explanation for colour theory
When I use rose and a vibrant blue pigment i got a really beautiful violet💜
Thank you for this clear, simple explanation. And thank you for being type B. :) Me too.

😂🤣😅 Love the interaction between you and your camera guy!
❤️ ❤️ We're just having some fun out there, haha!
you are incredible, thank you SO much for posting these videos!! I love to make charts in general, so it's great for both play and practice during burnout (and anytime)
:)
You are so funny! I love it!
I plan to make a color wheel for all the different primary hues.
Thank you Jenna. That was so helpful 🙂
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for sharing, Cheryl!
Love this ❤ thank you
I learned a lot!,thanks
Thanks kindly friend how cool !
Thank you!!
Thank you! Just bought one of your books on Amazon.
Thank you so much! I hope you love it!!
So Helpful!!!! Love your videos!
If I click on the color wheel, I'm getting your beginners guide. I already got that one! 😊 can I find the color wheel somewhere else?
Hi, I couldn't get a copy of the colour wheel from your download thingy, but it's ok, I loved this teaching video. Thank you for sharing so much free on here. I have ordered your books on Ebay. I got the paints mostly but I need to get a couple more from your suggestions. I appreciate your tutorials so so much!
Hey! I TOTALLY forgot to include the download and I’m not home right now, so sorry!!! Will be getting that in the description ASAP!
Here you go, Vanessa! Sorry for the wait! jennarainey.com/color-wheel-guide
Thank you very helpful
Type A, Type B…means nothing to me 😂😂😂 one day I hope to be as confident in color as you are. Thank you so much for the excellent color theory tutorial and a way to understand it through doing.❤️
I downloaded what I thought was the color wheel template, but its your ebook and dlthough that is great, there is no template for the wheel.
Wonderful!
Thanks!
I will never forgive you for that not-yellow-enough yellow orange 😂 Thanks for the laugh 😆 and the lovely video ❤️
Lol! 😂😂 ya just never know with some people... glad you liked the video, Ceara!
Why the violett is so muddy?... for all, take a cold blue and cold red than you creat a beautiful violett! (or the real primary cyan and magenta)
Hi Jenna , I have just bought your book Everday watercolours. What size pad block do I need to buy for your book and to start doing the exercises, colour wheels , flowers exercises etc.
Hey! Thanks so much for the support, I really appreciate you. Here's the exact paper I use: Legion Stonehenge Watercolor Paper: amzn.to/2GDaYH9
Great thank you
Hi Jenna in your everyday watercolour book I just bought , you have mentioned your colours but its not clear which ones. For example Winsor Green ( which shade - blue shade, or Yellow shade ? As there is a big difference in the tone ? Best Wishes Ruth
Very good
So is the link to the colour wheel download template is non existent?? I have your workbook etc already :))
Hmmm. My computer and printer are "not talking to each other" these days! If anyone else has that
problem, trace a circle, cut it out, and fold it to make the 6, at least, divisions. Those can be divided
"by eye" easily enough. I'm excited to make this color wheel! Really!
It also seems like this would be a good way to learn about paint water ratio…cream, milk, coffee.
You're videos make me so calm. I'm a very uptight person just always have been art has really helped me not be.
Question ! I have heard or read that in mixing secondary colors to use a warm and cool color ex: warm red and cool blue vs like scarlet lake and Cobalt blue. Any thoughts?
Sounds great to me! I think people should mix however they want and find what they truly love and what fits with their style! I say go for it!
take a cold blue and cold red than you creat a beautiful violett! (or the real primary cyan and magenta). the violett in the video is very muddy because she mix warm and cold tones.
Do you take tubes and put them in the pans or do you start with pans? Thank you.
Hi Sherry! I take tubes and put them into a palette and preferably let them dry before using (it saves paint that way). I personally don't like using pans, they're good for travel, but I can't get certain brushes to mix the way I want.
☠️🤣☠️🤣☠️🤣☠️ 'we're not in geometry class anymore so, suck it' loooolllllll
😂 😂 hahahaha
Math is NOT "hard", It's just something you have to work at learning. It's just like learning a foreign language. I LOVE math; the more advanced, the better!!!
