This video has been quite helpful to me. Though not color blind I've learned that I do see colors differently than most. Can you tell me where I can purchase the palate that you're mixing your paint on? It is not in your Amazon storefront.

We agree completely, color theory does not have to be complicated or intimidating! Learning the basic principle of using complementary pairs to fine tune intensity is one of the most important skills an artist can learn. Great explanation, and excellent practical demonstration!

My first professional watercolors were three tubes from Winsor & Newton: Winsor Yellow, Permanent Rose, and Winsor Blue (red shade). Painting with a triad palette taught me more than any other single exercise. Even though I now have many colors at my disposal, I still enjoy occasionally going back to my first three.

When I took an art class, the instructor only had us use red, yellow, blue, and black. I.learned a great deal about color back then. Can't wait to start painting once again. Your explanation is so helpful.

I would be fascinated to see how you'd make a magenta with these three colours, or any blue and red really. You can make a red by adding yellow to magenta, though.

Thanks for sharing your color mixing process Jenna. It was nice to see how the color tones change ever so slightly when you add its compliment to it. Amazing job on your flower as well! I like the contrast and how simple the shape of the flower is throughout your painting.

I've loved Princeton Heritage synthetic brushes for a long time now but I recently found another synthetic brush I love even more and that's the short handle Mimik Synthetic Sable brushes by Creative Mark. They were on sale at jerry's artarama and I think they're awesome! A bit more stiff than the heritage, holds water better and I like how the bristles are a teensy bit shorter so they allow for more control. Just thought I'd mention!

Brilliant demonstration! I recently watched a similar video in which the artist chose a "pink" (or rose) rather than a bright red. I recall that adding a touch of yellow produced a nice looking red. I think the argument was that it’s difficult to mix a pink colour from the bright red. I wonder what your thoughts are about that?
Love your videos. I’m working through your book, but there’s no way I’ll do it in 30 days 🤪

And I want to THANK YOU! I’m a beginner beginner but wow, tonight things really clicked and I’ve been using your books, yt videos and soon patreon… you are not only an amazing artist but an amazing teacher! ❤ I look forward to spending my nights painting with Jenna and John!

Great video! I could literally spend all day just mixing colors LOL - I have to discipline myself to actually paint something. :-) Color mixing somehow comes natural to me - I don't know that I've ever been surprised at a result, unless one of the paints is a "weaker pigment."
I'm interested in why you went with a true red this time? In an older video IIRC you used Opera Pink, which made sense to me because it was like CMYK that printers use. In expert hands (like yours), the results are always gorgeous!

I love the MaimeriBlu paints. They are very pigmentive and last longer also creamy. I was surprised when I bought them snd started painting with them. I do some of your exercises and I was noticing the difference between the Daniel Smith and Miameriblu. Don't get me wrong I love Daniel Smith paints and I'll pick them over any paints because of the granulation you get. I just started using 3 colors of Maimeriblu plus Dragon's blood. Thank you 😊. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving ❤. JK FLORIDA USA 🇺🇸

Hi Sam. I'm doing exactly what I feel led to do as a professional watercolor artist. Being a professional means that I both educate and I pay my bills by this career path that I am very blessed to have. In this video, I am simply showing what three paints I'd choose as my top three paints and then painting flowers with them. Yes, I have affiliation with Princeton, I am transparent with that affiliation, I love working with them, and have always loved using Princeton brushes (even before I had any sort of affiliation with them). That's all. I hope you have a lovely day.
