Careful Toby, if you relax too much then you forget to wobble your line, and people will work out that you are actually a very accomplished draftsman ;-) This was excellent, nice fast pace and highly motivating.
I really don’t know how to draw so I use the watercolor pencils to trace stencils then I free hand some of the details of the stencils so I’m learning slowly. Then I paint with my watercolors the lines become one with the paints😊. Thank you for sharing your tips I’m learning so much from you .
I adore Faber-Castell watercolor pencils. The pigment just melts immediately. I have a small battery operated sharpener that works like a dream. Thank you Toby. You always give useful information and demonstration. Thank you
I've always seen demonstrations of watercolor pencils that simply lay down the pigment and then wash them, basically turning them into watercolors. The problem I have with them is that they are something different, neither colored pencil or watercolors, and both. I'm pleased with this demonstration, you actually treat them like their own thing. I think I'll dig mine out of the drawer. Thanks Toby!
I LOVE your video! This is my first time visiting your channel and your 23 minutes passed by like a 2 minute video. Thanks for keeping things FUN! I’m inspired to play with my watercolor pencils now.
Loved this video! I have wc pencils and now I know how to sharpen them & use them. I need to experiment & just go for it. New to wc in general & enjoy that as well.
Glad to have found this video today. I had forgotten that some years back, I bought some Derwent watercolour pencils and a little water bottle brush. But I can see now that there is So Much More that I could be doing with them! Thank you for your explanations and encouraging me to start using them again. , 👏🏻👏🏻🥰🧑🏻🦰🇨🇦
Thanks for making this video. I was just using my set of the same color pencils and they worked just like what you show. But you do so much more with them. I look forward to trying these techniques. 😎
Thankyou so much for this non traditional, non stuffy tutorial. The others make me feel like keeping them in the box. Your fun approach has me looking forward to playing and experimenting with them. Thankyou again!
This is great bc I have watercolour pencils in the travel kit you inspired me to make. I've never liked that the initial scratchy lines don't disappear with water but you've given me some new ideas so thank you very much!
Thanks for the video, haven’t used these materials before. A sanding block after cutting the wood off can speed sharpening. Keep your finger pressed on the tip to keep it secured to the block, rotate as you push back and forth.
Great video, Toby. I used them to come in at the end of an ink/watercolour illustration last night to add finishing touches and cool effects. It felt safer and was imo successful. More predictable and gradual than adding more watercolour, and avoided the risk of looking overworked.
Hi Toby. Following on from my email and how to use water colour pencils sometime ago thank you for producing this tutorial - as you promised you would! Cheers Tony👣🦎
I like watercolor pencil because it DOES leave crayon mark /texture ...That the whole point of having watercolor pencils. yeah, we can "hide" or use them in Whatever ways it is art after all, but the pencils effect IS the whole charm of watercolor pencils. It leaves a beautiful effect of paint AND crayons 😍
Love seeing how different people use pencils. Have you tried the Derwent Inktense pencils? Their colours are mind blowing once you add water. So fun to use.
Lovely sketches! Inspiring, because I still have my original pencils still packed away because of my love of very expensive professional wc tubes! 😂 great for initial sketch.
My daughter was sorting my art corner...and she said" these are watercolour pencils" ....most of my art supplies are her old school leftovers SO, I can try this😊
Thank you for sharing your approach to working with watercolor pencils, Toby. 🎨 Do you have much experience with water soluble graphite pencils and pans? Might you approach them the same way? Thanks for the insight!
Yes they are, they're a little more limited - and require some 'vision' perhaps more than watercolour paints, but they're also cheap, approachable and fun... i've got a blog post here you might be interested in www.sketchloose.co.uk/blog/watercolor-pencils
I used to sharpen my colored pencils that way but decided it was wasteful of color and didn’t provide enough benefit. I can do the same art with regular pencil sharpener.
I've been using watercolor pencils for 6 months, but unlike you, in combination with a pallette which changes everything. No pencil lines and takes the medium to the next level especially with mixing.....really surprised you didn't include this method.
those look terrible. if you are reading this just buy the inktense by derwent or the Albrecht Dürer wc pencils. these are a waste of time and money. please trust me !
“Faster than the speed of light” drawing style. 👏👏

I love this! Tomorrow i am going to expend the morning trying this techniques, thanks a lot
Have fun!
@@TobySketchLoose I did! Hahaha :))
Thank you! I just re-discovered that I own watercolor pencils and have been struggling a little on my own. This will help a lot.

My pleasure, it was indeed your email that prompted me 🙏 there are a couple more videos to come as well 😀
Had some of these watercolour pencils in a draw for years. After watching your video I have tried and very pleased. Great video thank you 👍
My pleasure 😊
Oh my hat, you make this look so easy. I so enjoy your videos!
You can do it!
I absolutely love it. Thank you very much!
Very cool intro to watercolor pencils. Never knew how to use them or thought it was for kids. Now I know!! Thanks for the video. Subscribed.

You're an amazing teacher, learning so much from your great videos.
I appreciate that!

I have - haven't made a video on them though :D
Just what I needed. Thank you, sir.
Lovely sketches! Inspiring, because I still have my original pencils still packed away because of my love of very expensive professional wc tubes! 😂 great for initial sketch.
I dont use my WC enough.
I think they are a great alternative to graphite for initial sketches.
Very inspiring video! A fun way to use watercolour pencil. I definitely want to try it 😊
Ok, time to dig my watercolour pencils out again, thank you!
Not sure what paper to best use though.....?
Watecolour paper for full watercolour effect
Great video thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
My daughter was sorting my art corner...and she said" these are watercolour pencils" ....most of my art supplies are her old school leftovers
SO, I can try this😊
Can't wait to try these! This is a new discovery for me!
Great video Toby. I have seen the Water Colour pencils in my locals arts supplies shop and I thought how I would use them.
Very interesting....will need to experiment....thank you for sharing
Thankyou for a most interesting video. Love Mary Ann from Queensland Oz.
Such a great video
Fabulous. Thank you so much
Magical. Thanks for your Inspiration ❤
My pleasure 😊
Thank you for sharing your approach to working with watercolor pencils, Toby. 🎨
Do you have much experience with water soluble graphite pencils and pans? Might you approach them the same way? Thanks for the insight!
I've used them a little l, they're fun for sure
Love this video, very inspiring - which paper do you suggest is best for watercolour pencils?
Watercolour paper - I like using my normal papers
If I have never used watercolors before, would watercolor pencils be a reasonable place to begin?

You're welcome!
I remember sharpening pencils in the 1950’s just like you did these watercolor pencils. I’m in. 🫶💕
Lordy, I have sooooo many watercolor pencils ... 😅 Thanks for the demo & info
You are so welcome!
@@TobySketchLoose I now have a set & it's your fault 😅 I wish they sold the Caramel open stock; really like that one.
Love your channel! Thank you!
I didn’t know that you had an architect’s nib; or maybe I did and I forgot 😂. How does it compare to the fude nib?
Its a little easier in that you don't have to hold it at funny angles. But you do have to remember which direction to draw in...
@@TobySketchLoose Which direction? Sorry, what do you mean?
Are you using watercolour paper or good quality sketch paper?
WC paper
Thank you
Magic … ta very much!
Well that’s new for you!
As it's being second for you!

I tried out a small set of W&N watercolor pencils. Really disliked them, ended up gathering dust in a drawer.
Faber-Castell are amazing.
If you don't like them give them to someone who will.
I used to sharpen my colored pencils that way but decided it was wasteful of color and didn’t provide enough benefit. I can do the same art with regular pencil sharpener.
Fair enough :) I find I waste far less lead doing it this way - I guess it simply depends how you do it and what you find best.
I hate the faber castel ones. $50 and horrible and waxy.I have tried so many paper types and it never worked well, even constantly sharpening them.
I've been using watercolor pencils for 6 months, but unlike you, in combination with a pallette which changes everything. No pencil lines and takes the medium to the next level especially with mixing.....really surprised you didn't include this method.
There are many more things I don't know, can't do, or don't consider than things I do do ;)
