Although many people seem to not enjoy this remake, I still think Jackie Earle Haley did a good job on portraying a much darker version of Freddy Kruger. Englund is still the the Kruger we all know and love, but I also think that Haley did an amazing performance when it comes to the darker tones of the film.
I agree it’s one of the best nightmare/Freddy movies.
I think most people haven’t seen many of them. I like the corny shit too. But this was good
@@oldironsides4107 no this movie was bad and isnt just because the actor change, the way freddy looks in general sucks its like a 4 year old tried to draw him just out of memory it sucks
@@Disbelief_ There's something called an opinion. That's theirs, not yours. Even though you didn't like the movie doesn't mean that they have to not like the movie.
For a dude who kills you in your sleep Freddy is quite a jokester. But unlike most movies in the series, this one doesn’t make a fool of them nearly as much
Hear hear!
You know, the "Freddy wasn't guilty" twist would've been so interesting. It'll be a unique spin on Freddy, who could've been some guy unjustly killed. And that he's come back for revenge.
To make it even better, he now has an excuse to get creative with his kills.
@@tcrpgfan it makes it all the more personal for him, and he has an actual reason to go after the main characters

This was one of the very few effective scares of the films. The shot where he’s laughing almost makes his makeup work, too.
In my opinion, the 'oh God. No, just me' is easily the best line. Something about it is just so cruel. Love or hate this film you gotta admit Jackie Earl Haley did a great job at portraying a monstrous and cruel freddy
I like his portrayal too.
Fair, but you can’t compete with “Please god!” “THIS is god!”
Microsleeps are a realistic addition to the movie, but the problem is that actual dreams start during REM sleep, and microsleep is simply not long enough for a person to start dreaming
Could you then avoid freddy by sleeping in very short intervals, to avoid REM, but getting in enough sleep to survive?
Yeah but Freddy doesn’t seem to obey regular laws of biology. I mean he was able to attack the kids and Nancy in Dream Warriors despite them all being put on Hypnocyll (I don’t count the Doctor because he didn’t take it since he wasn’t a patient), that drug that was supposed to suppress REM sleep/dreams.
@@kamilgrunert1586 You can survive, but you'll be miserable as all hel. It's not a fun experience.

Honestly, if there's anything I like about this movie it's Freddy's voice. My god is it menacing.
Also that last kill is wicked.
His look is really intimidating too
His voice was honestly the worst part. That and the CGI face that made him look like one of the Michael Bay Ninja Turtles.
I kinda liked the voice. But maybe because I'm hearing Jackie Earle Haley's other character, Rorschach.
I hate how people don’t appreciate his performance cause they too butthurt for change. I understand Englund performance was Godly but why bash Hayley? In all honestly I liked his voice better than Englund’s but that’s just my opinion though.
@@argyfargo5674 It was all just too fake and CGI. The voice was so obviously just edited and modulated to sound like that and it was incredibly immersion breaking for me, and also the CGI on his face was terrible.

Well it would’ve made more sense as for why Freddy kills kids in their dreams
@@rusty7984 how?

Nah.
The Nightmare on Elm street franchise needs a recount.
It would’ve been an interesting twist if they kept the “Freddy wasn’t guilty” twist to this version of Nightmare Elm street.
Considering how this was probably the more darker version of any of these movies without Englunds humor brought into the role, it actually could’ve worked really well
Yeah it would have added to his motive. He takes away what those parents value most to punish them in revenge. Taking away that twist means he torments and murders children he molested to... Punish them for not keeping the abuse a secret?
Agree, I felt like the idea that he was innocent was the only fresh thing about the movie, and it had a lot of promise, but then it's like they just said "Hehe, never mind..."
African Safaris with a Chocolate Lab Named Aspen It would have been a good change IMO too.
But, then it wouldn’t have fit into their “modern/gritty” theme, and their confirmed child rapist angle, which makes anything but anger at Freddy feel gross.
The “actually innocent” angle, I think could have only worked with Englund’s late series horror-comedy movies.
@@cjwrench07 They didn't have to have the child rapist thing though, since it was never a confirmed part of his backstory. Having him kill out of anger for being wrongfully murdered AND for being accused of such gross crimes was more than enough of a motive in this movie. Instead, they just made the character so disgusting that no one wants to rewatch the movie ever again, which is NOT what you want with a franchise character.
Chexpet what I’m saying is, the company wanted a despicable, 100% evil, Freddy reboot. Completely opposite of the campy and sometimes funny Englund-style Freddy.
Trying to make THIS Freddy a sympathetic villain, would have been impossible with the entire direction/theme of THIS movie.
I would have loved it, if they didn’t make him a confirmed child rapist, and instead made him an innocent scapegoat for someone else’s crimes. Then maybe you could have him go after the teens to make them remember, and trying to clear his and his family’s name. Freddy growing increasingly angry at the kid’s manipulated/suppressed memories; until he snaps and the dream torture(to get to the truth) turns to murdering them.
"What doesn't kill you, usually succeeds in the second attempt." - Mr. Krabs
Guess he was right.
But what did that have to do with making krabby patties?
Obviously the og and Robert Englund will always be THE Freddy Krueger, but over the years, I don't think this remake is that bad anymore tbh. Jackie Earl Haley is pretty creepy as the Fredster
I still think the actual movie is pretty bad, but I like Jacky for the most part
I'm hoping he gets a chance to play the character again, in a better movie
I mean, if you have to pass the knife-gloves to someone, he’s not a bad choice.
His Freddy was amazing tbh.
To me Jackie will always be Rorschach
It takes alot of balls and great acting to take on the role of a character so Dark and do an amazing job of both Terrifying and Disgusting an Audience, and I think that Jack Earle Haley did an amazing job at it. And his Voice is so Menacing and Vindictive, almost like hes got a score to settle with his victims. Great stuff.

The “maybe Freddy was innocent” stuff probably would have worked a lot better if they had it so it was someone that didn’t like Freddy telling the kids to tell their parents instead of showing a kid with literal slash marks on her back and also probably would have been better than the idea of children lying about stuff like that.
You can tell James hate this movie because he didn’t even do, “TITLE CARRRD!”

So I've got to be honest here, I think they should have doubled down on the idea that maybe Fred was innocent (it's brought up at 9:43). I think that would have been an interesting twist on the mythos of the franchise while also having this remake carving its own path. Maybe even take it a step further with Fred being _completely_ innocent, with the marks and scratches on the kids being from each other playing too rough but all agreeing to blame it on the friendly gardener, and Freddy is hunting down the kids as revenge on _them_ instead of the original movie being revenge on the parents that killed him, ultimately making the movie a cautionary tale about how lies can have very serious consequences.
I agree.
I like this idea.
that would have been fucking awesome and a nice twist and different
That would have been great! It would have added sooo much depth to the characters, and actually have been kind of interesting to see Freddy go from a friendly (if creepy) man to a monster of nightmares. Such a missed opportunity to tell an interesting story in a "slasher"
But like always fans would’ve complained about how Freddy is supposed to be evil even before his death.

I will say the remake definitely succeeded in making Freddy much darker and menacing, minus the throwback quotes and cheap jump scares.
This one has actually grown on me. A remake is, supposed to be, someone else's reimagining of a classic character. The darker, scarier, more terrifying version of Freddy that we see in this one is actually the one I prefer now. Its how my nightmares are, if theres a killer in them that's making jokes, its deadpan and creepy instead of funny... it just made it more real, and therefore more terrifying, to me on a personal level. Loved your Kill Count as always James. If with darker toned movies you can still make me laugh. Continue being a good person :)
I agree with your saying that a killer making jokes in dreams is terrifying, but I feel that this movie was very bland, it didn’t have the flavor of the OGs in my opinion. I also don’t like how they made him even more of a monster, I wish they made it so Freddy really was innocent and was killing the kids because their parents killed him even though he didn’t do anything. People have different opinions though, hope you are having a nice day.
@@D0CT0RS133P | I feel like the director of this movie wanted to do what Wes originally planned for the Original movie but since people are used to Freddy being a cartoony character that makes jokes, people hated this version of Freddy.
@@subjectdelta4758 Freddy's characterization is not THAT bad in the remake, it's all the characters around him that are utterly lifeless and bland. Rooney Mara's Nancy is not compelling so it's hard to care if her and her friends survive or not. Overall the movie had some decent ideas but it's execution was lacking.
I think this portrayal of Freddy is mostly good, but adding in the pedophile part of his crimes kind of lost some of the fun of his dark humored character for me. The lazy rehashing of iconic lines doesn't help. Still he was hands down the only reason I would rewatch this movie.
"A remake is supposed to be someone else's reimagining of a classic character."
And yet it copies so much of the original but more duller that failed to capture the tone and magic of the original.
I will say this, Jackie Earl Haley gave a pretty great performance as Freddy. Here's a fun fact about Jackie. Jackie Haley and Johnny Depp were friends for many years before Johnny Depp was cast in the original Nightmare. Both Jack and Johnny auditioned for the same role, but Johnny was cast because Wes Cravens daughter thought that Johnny was "dreamy." Now we have a performance from Jackie as Freddie, and I honestly like this performance almost as much as the original Robert Englund Freddy. I'm partially curious how Johnny would've played Freddy, but I wouldn't want to see it tbh.
I’m glad I’m not the only person who loved Jackie as Freddy, he did a great job taking up such an iconic and memorable role and doing it in his own way that really made his presence in the movie terrifying. If only the rest of the movie was just as good as he was than maybe we could actually have had the series with him that was originally planned. It’s really a shame that we didn’t get to see more of what Jackie could have done with Freddy. Than again, Quentin was pretty great too, I liked his character, Freddy and Quentin are worth watching this movie for, I didn’t personally like any of the other characters unfortunately.
@@fallenguardian3538 must be a daunting task, going into a role that's already been defined and perfected by another great actor. Honestly, later Freddy depictions were a little too campy for me. I loved him in the first three films, but Skateboard Freddy, video game Freddy, and Super Freddy (sucks) were too goofy. That's part of the reason I love Haley's performance so much, this is the darkest performance of Freddy we've ever seen. It can be a little gratuitous at times and a little bit too intentionally grungy, but it works and it's the best thing in the film. I also like the way he looks which may be a little more debatable, but the burns just look better here than they have in the past for me.
@@aspiringjoker2883 I definitely agree with how campy Freddy is the worst version of Freddy, also nice Dead Meat reference. This Freddy is underrated. He did his best to portray Freddy Krueger.
Jackie Earl Haley did a decent job portraying a far darker version of Freddy. The whole change in plot wouldn't have been awful if it had turned out he was innocent. Still enjoyed his performance and the way he gave him a very unique tone.
"far darker"
I don't think we saw the same movie.
I can think of a few ways that this remake could have been more unique. First off, kill Nancy and make someone else the main lead. It would be a hell of a twist and keep the audience on edge. Second, actually make Freddy innocent of the crimes he was accused of. That would add a more tragic angle to the character and give us something unique. Third, stop relying on jump scares unless you're going to make them actually scary. All that said, I still actually like Jackie Earl Haley as Freddy. He adds a sinister tone to the character that we really hadn't seen since Nightmare 2. Great video as always.
Karrota Kun I agree, except for the second reason. Just throw out the possible innocent man part, he's a Slasher villain, the less human the better.
Karrota Kun I completely agree, especially since Haley seemed to play the role that way

Your kill counts have improved a ton. While this is still enjoyable, only a couple minutes in you can tell how much extra energy you’ve been able to put into them without the day job. Fun to see the counts evolution.
I find Jackie Earle Haley is a great actor. But the writing for this movie really let him down. They should have definitely spoken to Wes Craven.
Wes Craven most likely didn't want this remake to happen at all. Nightmare 7 clearly was his way to say "I created this franchise and I also will end it".

Fun fact: the begging kitchen scene was filmed in a restaurant in Sherman oaks, California. My dad was working chef during their filming. The restaurant was named Corky’s and I think doesn’t exist anymore.🙂
I misread this and came to the conclusion that you, at one point, knew a man named Corky who no longer exists on this plane.
Convenient for you since now nobody can fact check you.
Apparently they filmed happy death day there too, that’s neat
Another fun fact the actor in that scene was from a small town in north dakota, where I was born
That's funny the Bookstore at 6:00 is Powell's North in Chicago, I worked there for five years, happened to walk in in 2009 the day the set scouts were there (!) after not going in for years, but I never actually watched this shit, just confirmed it now. We also shot our own movie there in the same aisle (the one to the left, actually,) trying to get a creepy Kubrickian horror effect. It is also closed, now. RIP.
Im gonna be honest the golden chainsaw kill was actually Nacy's mom

Freddy:that sounds like fun
The goal was to make Freddy creepy and dark. Goal achieved. Even if James isn't comfortable with it. After all, discomfort is the goal of intimidation as a whole. So, making a killer as baseless as possible just ensures that you never run out of rabbit hole to delve into.
I imagine Nancy's moms death was a dream. When Nancy got in the ambulance with Quentin, it looked as if she fell asleep, and it suddenly cuts to her home for the last scene. So she has one last nightmare about Freddy killing her mom, but rather than make a scene of her waking up. They cut to black leaving us assuming it would continue to explain why he was still alive.
Or...you know...Freddy just returned to the dream world when he died?
@@NoobMaster-uk2fk or it was just a nightmare of the situation she just went through
Well when you consider Freddy vs Jason, Jason won and Freddy got fucked up there much worse than this movie and his head was still very much alive. No surprise that a demon like Freddy can just live through things after being pulled out of the dream world where he's basically human.
In Dead by daylight Quentins backstory confirms her mom died
And then not make a documentary about why that is?
Those were the days, drinking soda and playing scratchy backy at break time
I know they never said it in the old movies, but if nothing else, the flashback in Freddy vs Jason REALLY seemed to be implying it. The way he looked at that scrapbook, and especially licking the picture. He seemed more than just stabby.
Nancy was hella underage during the "I'm your boyfriend now Nancy" scene so it's not even subtext
@@morganalabeille5004 I wouldn't say "hella underage". They were supposed to be high school seniors in the first movie, meaning she was likely 17 or 18. Still creepy if she was 17. Really still creepy if she was 18, but more for the 'unwanted advancement' angle. Age gaps don't bother me if everyone consents (and is 18+, of course), but obviously Nancy wouldn't have been consenting anyway.
Freddy’s voice is soothing and clean as hell
Geniii Animated and arts I prefer his voice here than Robert Englund.

I cannot believe that the actor that played Mr. Krabs was in this movie.
I really didn’t think i’d love this movie as much as I did! but it really does have so many fun qualities that I love. Kris dying off early was a shocker since her actress was so popular at the time! Freddy was so chilling as well I don’t really love the child molester ark being added to his storyline but I think it works specifically for this remake because it builds the connection to be much more then just freddy killing random teenagers. So many gorgeous visuals in this one as well 🩸❤️🙌
I will say, this version of Freddy actually unsettled me.

Can we all agree that dead meat is the official unofficial guide to horror movies so you don't always have to watch certain horror movies just for the plot or the kills
watching a film in its entireity is the only way to make a proper informed opinion about the film, for instance by only watching kill counts u might watch 1 abt a film that james hates yet u might love and youd have 0 clue that u like it bcoz youd only see kills and criticism
@@scott--1629 true but not all movies that he says are bad are bad and not all movies he says is good are good
@@gabrielbiot6792 u just proved my point, u cant just watch kill counts and then say u know the film. for instance lets say u watch his kill count abt scream 3, youd only think that purely from what james says and shows u, that the film is bad, whereas if u sat down on ur own and watched it as a whole then u may love it. again my point is kill counts absolutely should NOT be a way for u to make an opinion of a horror film as ur seeing the whole movie from james' perspective
I really enjoyed it the fact they turned freddie from a psycho killer to straight up monster it makes him just so much more revolting
I prefer the "Oh God." "No, just me." over the "This is God" line.

That last kill is my absolute favorite in this film.
So I'll give my Diamond Krueger Glove to Nancy's mom. The CGI looks so great on that kill. James, I give you my pick for coolest kill.
Dull Machete would be, I don't know, the second kill?
In the original series Freddy was actually a predator in the original series too. In part 4 if I remember correctly (possibly 5) when they are researching Freddy and trying to find info on him there is a newspaper saying child predator goes missing. So if you pay enough attention you realize that everything that is shown in the remake is just more in depth but it did happen.
"Child Predator" is a kind of euphemistic phrase - Freddy was always a child murderer, and that could be described as child predation. The implication that he was child molester was always faintly there just because that was the original concept, but there's no explicit confirmation.
Freddy was always a child predator. That is why he was burned alive.
@@drpibisback7680 He is directly called a molester in newspaper in Dream Child. It is at the 33:32 mark of the film. It says, "Child Molester Acquitted; Citizens Outraged. Kreuger freed on technicality, Springwood in Shock."
