We all miss Captain Newland's beautiful, MASSIVE, Master's salute. I imagine every captain on the Great Lakes knows that Captain Newland is master of his ship. I suppose it is appropriate to not copy Captain Newland's Master salute. We will all be glad when he returns.
Now that's a great perspective! 👍
Bob Barker said its all good far as he knows....
I thought from the title we were going to hear unexpected noises from structure or power plant as she passed close. A temporary master for the vessel isn't something wrong.
exactly another click bait ripoff
It might not be Captain Newland blasting a 1 minute salute but that horn is still music to my ears!! 📢📢📢😀
Indeed, well said.
Perhaps the temp captain is just respecting Captain Newland's legacy on the Barker? Still one of the best salutes on the lakes. Great catch Paul. Thanks.
Good point!
I was at her christening. My uncle worked for inter-lake and took me on the tour/christening. it was utterly amazing as a seven-year-old. it’s good to see and hear her again.
Awesome! Great memory to have.
I loved the four guys who were walking and making it look like a treadmill.
😅 that's always fun to see, especially when their speeds match.
Yes, the JRB still has a Relief Captain aboard. Andrea Guerriero said Captain Newland (her permanent captain) is still on vacation and won't be back until September. She filmed them the other day when JRB was in the Soo.
Good to know, in their defense, they still did give us a 2 horn salute.
Which raises the question, where do ship captains go on vacation?
I'm thinking they either LOVE cruise ships or they HATE them....
Good point lol. You suppose a mail carrier goes for a nice long walk after work to relax?
If I'm a ship captain I'm driving or flying.😂
Great video and views as always. Stay safe out there everyone.
As to the two different horn sounds, they are perfectly normal except that the high pitched horn vibrates before the low pitched horn. The reason is that the low pitched horn takes more air and a little longer time before it starts to vibrate. It makes an interesting tone, but nothing wrong with it. The two tones could easily be synchronized mechanically or electronically, but it would ruin that unique, magnificent sound.
What I was referring to was normally the Barker salute is much much longer, it generally times in at 65 seconds.
@@PaulScinoccathat’s because you are referring to the master salute, that is long-long-long-short-short, whilst in this occasion they performed the ordinary salute, that is long-short-short. The bridge answers accordingly.
The Barker has quite the horn, it sounds great!
indeed!
Everybody should develop their own salute style for the lift bridge, perfunctory or dramatic. I had mine and I would not be opposed but would rather it not be copied, it was mine!
I can understand that.
Very very big there when passing by, though once out on the lakes it becomes tiny.
I bet that horn sounds even better in the fog.
I bet!
Still best horn on the lake 👏
I will not disagree.
33:09] Whoa!! That is a nice basso-profundo!
indeed.
A great salute and a nice ship
indeed!
Love the Great Lakes Ships
Indeed!
Great job. Love the echo.
Thanks!
love the echo. love the bunneymen.
That view head on is stunning. Good job. ❤❤
Thank you! 😊
MY FAVORITE!! I guess the salute is what is different. I know nothing of the captain but he has a really unique horn. thanks for posting!!
You are correct, thanks!
Great Ship Enjoyed It😊
Thanks! 😊
This makes me miss home. SOmetimes we could hear the horns from my house in the Woodland neighborhood.
I know what you mean, I'm up there, when the wind is right you can hear them like you're at the canal...almost.
Not a bad Barker's Bark for a temporary skipper...😊📣
Nice and positive! I like that!
It's true that didn't sound quite like her usual bark - a little on the short and wavery side? Still a gorgeous horn, though - thanks for a great video! 😁
Yes, thanks
Paul I don't know anything about these big boats and I just wondered if the Barker is bigger then the Fitzgerald was ? This was a great video, thanks for showing it.
Much bigger the Fitz was 729' long 75' wide , the Barker is 1004' long, 105' wide.
@@PaulScinocca Thank you for the reply Paul and the interesting video.
Awesome backstory…thank you as always Paul & to the community for the info!!
Is there a recommended site to track/learn more about the Lakers (sorry if that’s a novice/dumb question)?
Much appreciated as the son of a captain on the MS ICW and now living on The Sound in the PNW!!
Having grown up in the area; much respect to those freshwater seas that many think are merely “lakes” 😉💪🏻✌🏻
I suggest, www.boatnerd.com
Awesome catch dude
Thank you very much!
It’s huge. 👍🇺🇸
Stunning video
Thanks
Saw her numerous times going under the Blue Water Bridge😊
Sounds like the diaphragm in the whistle is going bad. I just had one fail on me a couple of weeks ago and it acted the same way. They are not easy to change while the ship is moving
I bet!,
Ship is so beautiful
indeed!
👍👍👍
thanks!
That lower pitch ship's horn sounds flat. But it's exposed to the elements all year long. So it's to be expected. True, it's usually 3 long blasts and 2 short.
Still sounds great
James needs the sick bay! 🙂
😂 good one!
It sounds like the relief skipper doesn't have the knack of the Barker Bark yet.
Or, not trying to emulate the perfection ? 😂
As an intermittent viewer I was unable to ascertain what was wrong with this vessel. Would you care to enlighten me? Also, are you informed enough to explain the unusual bow shape?
The salute is normally a long drawn out Master Salute, this was a "short" Captains salute, signifying the normal Captain was not on the ship. The Round bow, is designed for more cargo space on the ship. Since these are "lakers" and the travel distance is not great, the efficiency lost on the bow is made up for with the profit of more cargo capacity. (in a nutshell explanation)
@@PaulScinocca Well, I didn't expect a line on the profit and loss report to be the answer to my query. I had more esoteric options in mind. Also thanks, Paul, for explaining what was 'wrong'.
I think I’m gonna call my wife’s snoring….the master salute…
🤣 Oh my!
A little memory of home growing up hello superior
Nice!
I seent it brand new first time through the Soo locks
You got me on that one, that would have been awesome to capture!
A beautiful ship
indeed.
Good GAWD, that thing is MASSIVE!
My fav is the Mesabi Miner
Another frequent Duluth visitor. I chase that one relentlessly as well.😀
How can such a large boat be so quiet
The engine is 20' below the water level, good mufflers as well...
Big ship.
Definitely wasn’t barking.
still a salute at least! It turned a lot of heads when it went short..
that is james barker's regular sound of salute,
Nope, it's normally a long drawn out master salute.
I’ll still take it.
👍 indeed.
I want a set of horns like that on my car.
Then again, they are almost as big as my car. 😞
Paul go to to Saint Marie Michigan and go to rotary Park
Been a long time since I've been there. I must go back one of these days.
Ya I was just there 2 weeks ago
Great video. She’s a lady, wo wo wo, she’s a lady
Indeed!
C est fascinan les ecluses !
Is the normal Captain off for this run? That long note was nowhere near the usual 15 seconds 😆
I heard he is on vacation until September.
@@PaulScinocca ah- that would explain the shorter horns.
That's a pretty long dinghy.
LOL!
Excuse me!
lol
Make him permanent and give him a raise
LOL, I know exactly what you are meaning on this!
Should make whoever robbed the people of what we want.... make them "Walk the Plank!"
😆
Whoever wrote The caption committed an oxymoron, I do believe listen and hear are the same thing 🤪
Sinus congestion.....
🤣, maybe...
To me, sounds like some worn out bearings.
was that it ??????????????????????????????
You have 30 questions, or the keyboard get stuck? 🤣
Is there something wrong with the guy who wrote the title? Watch the video! 🤔🤨
lots wrong 😁
@@PaulScinoccaglad you said that Paul lol
Mister mate, mister mate put me on the four till eight.😂⚓
LOL!
ah didnt hear nuthin.
Echo, echo, echo
Good echo day!
What can we sell folks who would jump in boiling, corrosive water?
Definitely not the same bark.
Temp Captain Bark, it was nice of them to do the dual horn though! Any salute is always appreciated though. 😁
She must be at or close to capacity . Sitting very low
29', the max allowable summer depth.
