⚓️Decibel Record SHATTERED by Ship James R. Barker as it departs Duluth, MN
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 8 ก.พ. 2025
- I have been documenting numerous vessels arriving/departing Duluth using a decibel meter to determine which ship has the loudest horn/whistle on Lake Superior. There has been speculation for years that the 1004 foot ship James R. Barker has the loudest horn/whistle on the Great Lakes, and that theory is now confirmed!
This video shows the James R. Barker breaking the decibel record with a whopping 123.1 decibel reading as it passes under the Aerial Lift Bridge heading onto Lake Superior. There is NO DOUBT now that this ship has the most powerful and loudest whistle/horn out there! By the way, if the new decibel record wasn't cool enough, it was done with a master salute! I was very excited after seeing/hearing the pervious decibel record was shattered!

You gotta love when a Captain puts his weight behind a whistle, hearing protection required with the James R Barker.
By the sound of that whistle, it sounds like five crew members had their weight on it as well! The JRB is so impressive!👍👊⛴️
Floor Jansen might be impressed.
Hey Mike , great vid. Do you know how deep the channel is beneath the lift bridge buddy ?
Thanks
Rich UK 🇬🇧
@richf6111 absolutely Rich, here’s the information below. After you read that, go to the video I just posted five minutes ago and see a powerful storm on Lake superior. How deep/wide/long ship canal:
Its length is 0.33 miles (0.53 k). The canal is maintained at 245 feet (75 m) wide. Depth: 28 to 32 feet in the entrance; 27 feet deep in the iron-ore route channels, and 20 to 23 feet in the inner channels. Here’s a little more information about dredging the canal. It’s a few years old, but the article still is relevant. www.lre.usace.army.mil/Media/News-Releases/Article/2289075/wisconsin-company-to-dredge-duluth-superior-harbor/ (www.lre.usace.army.mil/Media/News-Releases/Article/2289075/wisconsin-company-to-dredge-duluth-superior-harbor/)
It’s so great that the JRB’s captain plays to the crowd with the ‘Barker Bark’. And you’re right. Interlake seems like a great company.
It’s an excellent company! Whoever installed those horns/whistles, we need to get them a gold medal now!🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇
I root for all the American companies but the Duluth-based Great Lakes Fleet is just a piece of the Canadian National system and the American Steamship Company is a subsidiary of the Rand Corporation. Interlake, as you know, is a privately held company that is wholly vested in the shipping company with no other interests and is a pillar of the industry.
I agree with everything you said. I’m still learning about these companies. It’s very fascinating. ⛴️👍👊
@@bigmonmagoomba9634 I sure wish Oglebay Norton and Bradley Transportation were still around. Former great American companies.
I don’t know too much about those companies. I’m going to research them. For others interested. Here are the links to get you started.

Wow, that is easily the loooongest and loudest master salute I’ve heard. Really deep bass to it.
More excellent footage and commentary, thank you sir!
I do remember this, it was really impressive. Anytime this ship arrives, It’s impressive.
Great job catching the Barker Bark, Mike! Somehow I am not surprised! LOL! Also glad to see you getting some good weather! Enjoy it!
Donna, honestly, I thought the whistle/horn would be close to the other ones. Nope! This ship is the real deal. The loudest.
Are are definitely top of the TH-camrs that I love watching. Your attitude is amazing and your videos.... Well totally outstanding. Thank you
Wow! Van! What an awesome comment. You really made my night. When I’m out there having fun with the ships I really don’t think about it. I’m just having fun. My whole reason for being anonymous is so I can just be myself and not be judged, and just have fun. That’s all I’m doing. I really appreciate you watching my videos. All the best to you!
At 7:30 and forward that was the most bizarre sound the way the acoustics changed as the vessel moved. I’ve seen the barker in person but never noticed that phase shift phenomenon before. Sweet video Mike you’re the man!
What a great comment. That was truly bizarre!
My ears were ringing so I didn’t notice Robert!🫨🫨🫨👂👂👂😂😂😂
I agree, and I was there
The audio anomalies are not a result of movement or Dopplering, the ship's horns are overloading his microphone.
I’m using a special microphone to do these videos. When I started doing the videos you could barely hear me because of wind. This microphone is specifically designed to cut the wind out completely. The downside, the volume is not as loud and there is some sound canceling scenarios as well. However, trust me, if I had a standard microphone, you would never be able to hear me with all the wind here in Duluth. I hope this all makes sense. Thanks for the comment. All the best my friend!👍⛴️👊
Wow, she REALLY let the horn bark there. Longest holds I have ever heard on any youtube channel. THAT was astounding
I would love to know how the whistles on those vessels!
Patrick’s music, you and I will have to get up on that ship someday, go in the pilothouse, I’m pushing the horn button!!!😂👊
👍
@@vibewithmike That would be an achievement for sure!
👍
My favorite horn! Love that two tone!
There’s no horn like it! Actually, it arrived yesterday in Duluth and I got to hear that powerful horn. The crowd was so mesmerized. Did you see this story about the Boat friends on the news? th-cam.com/video/X1fWdiuszqE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5FhG6FMiG5cYgiG7
That was awesome! & worthy of a master salute 🥰🤗🔊🎶
Hey DMC!👋👋👋👋
Thanks for the comment my friend. I wish you an awesome Wednesday! I’ll be out there with the next ship.
Oh, ive also been waiting for this day from you LOL I’ve become obsessed with hearing the #barkerbark from dozens of TH-cam videos and I’m patiently waiting to hear this in person this summer.
The sound of that ship horn! Beautiful, I love it!
Reminds me of the almost ultrasound music of Tibetan monks chanting and their playing of long horns
What an awesome ship and very impressive horn. The captain really laid on it. This was a fun video!
Thanks!! 😎👍
Thank you so much Art! I hope you and your wife had a wonderful Tuesday. All the best brother!👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️

Just the Facts! Hey, what a nice thing to say. I hope you’re having a great Tuesday night. I’m just having fun out here with the ships. All the best to you my friend.⛴️👍👊
@@vibewithmike Hey Mike... On some ships when they have a super structure in the front and rear of the ships, are they steering from the front super structure at times or always in the rear?
Hey friend! Great question. I found a video that is only a few minutes long that explains it pretty well. I hope this helps and I hope you come back and check out some more ships with me. th-cam.com/video/dqRBgJgvMx8/w-d-xo.html
So cool that you catch the big ships coming through the canal on their way out to sea ! Thanks for the video's !
Cliff, thank you for watching. I hope you had a great Tuesday. And an even better Wednesday! Take care of my friend.
Wow😮!!! Like Gabriels Trumpet.
JRB another great lady of the lakes.

I must be color blind as I thought I saw green grass as Mike panned over toward the Park Point beach.
As long as you didn’t see white (snow), any color will do!
The James R Barker has a very interesting horn!!! I've heard many different ships horns in my time, but the horn on the James R Barker is a very impressive horn sound!!!
The Barker has a very interesting horn, which is two tone
We were in Duluth over the 4th of July last year, had beautiful weather, rode bikes for 2 days, absolutely had the whole place to ourselves, could not believe how little amount of people (tourist) were there, did not have to wait for any table, the restaurants were all very good.
I love ❤️ the sound of that ship 🚢, never heard it like that before. Love when the bridge operator responds, awesome 👌🏾 👏🏾 👍🏾 😍.
Jason, I really appreciate you dropping a comment. It means a lot my friend. Have fun watching these ships. I hope you come back to my channel and watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Your channel makes me nostalgic! I grew up watch freighters go up and down the St. Clair river at Marine City. Most people do not realize there is strict great lakes traffic control for these and ocean going ships. There is a published schedule, so you can look up when “a big one” is for example entering the St Clair river. With a river current of as much as 5 or 6 mph, and as narrow and shallow as is the channel (requiring speed for steerage) there is no room for a traffic jam or back up.
Peter, what a fantastic and informational comment! I did some research and found the schedule you are talking about. Boat friends, check it out here. ais.boatnerd.com/passage/port/st_clair
Wow, very awesome! That just never gets old!! Thanks for the great narration
Yo, what’s up Johnny! How’s it going brother? Thanks for watching. Happy Tuesday.

Nothing beats that horn.
Terry, we have to check with NASA to determine if they heard it in outer space. It’s the real deal man. All the best. I hope you’re having a great Tuesday.
How did I miss this video and the decibel record. Love it. Thanks for showing us around the pier.
Glad you enjoyed it
Horn installer asked the Captain "How loud do you want these horns to be?". The Captain said "Yes".
📣📣📣📣📣📣😂😂😂😂😂
That’s about right
Oh man, this was great! I had bone conducting headphones and and my brain rattled with that fantastic horn!
Alexzander, it literally shook me. It was crazy loud and legit vibrating.
Awsome video all the way round 👌. Barker has the big bark. Enjoyed the video Mike and BE SAFE OUT THERE!
The Barker is the leader in the clubhouse! Powerful sound!
WOW that’s LOUD! Great job.
Thanks Tony! All the best brother
What a beautiful to hear a beautiful lady with a loud bark. Just one question Mike, when you tell us where the ships are heading could you let us know how long it take to get there. Thanks again U R the best.
Yes, I will try, I’m still trying to figure out how long it takes myself. Happy Tuesday Scott!
@@vibewithmike Thank you Sir for responding.
Thank you for watching and always commenting. It’s really fun. I appreciate you Scott! Thanks man.
Approximate times....
Two days across Superior to the Soo locks.
24 hours from there to Port Huron.
About another 11-12 to Toledo.
Two days and change from the locks to Chicago or Gary.
Times are approximate, and depend on actual course and speed.
Course/speed typically most impacted by weather
TK!!!!! This is absolutely fantastic information! I always thought it was 24 hours from Duluth to Soo Locks! I’ve been wrong. Thanks again for letting this out for everybody. This is so awesome.

Captian Newland is pretty well known for his salutes. No one does it better than him.
One of the best captains out there
According to the booklet Your Know Ships (2022 edition), Captain Newland learned it from the previous captain who trained him. Glad the tradition was continued as it's a great sounding horn!
Wow... She has got quite the voice! A different salute to be sure... I don't think a camera does it justice. Have a great day Mike! 🚢🛳️

Everyone in Duluth: "James R Barker in town."
Hard for me to disagree with that

Fascinating video, interesting commentary too. I'd be quite happy to take a trip to Duluth for this experience alone!
Thanks so much for watching. 🚢
That was unlike any ship horn that I've heard. I don't know if it was actually the horn or if it was just your phone distorting when it was blasted but the horn almost sounded like a note being held on a phazing synthesizer. That was incredible!
I am so so happy I found this channel absolutely amazing video's Mike keep them coming mike Ontario canada cheers ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

What an experience. Thank you.
Great Video Mike Enjoyed it Are Those Leslie air horns ? Great Sound😊
Yes they are. Two of them. Nice article about them in the 2022 booklet Know Your Ships.
Those horns are incredible!
It appears so, I didn’t know for sure until Chuck said something. Thanks for asking Anthony.
Going to have to try to see this in person. Sounded like your camera mic AGC kicked in pretty hard. Very neat tri tone (I think) horn. The high db hit comes in when the low note kicks in. Some interesting harmonics going on for sure. Maybe do some research on the horn itself. That thing must take a TON of air to run.
We are hoping for different types of weather next week, because of what I’ve seen, it’s beautiful in all types of weather up there!
I’ll checked the weather, it’s going to be wonderful.

This vessel has the best sounding whistle on earth.
I couldn’t agree more
On the lakes, yes, but the QM2 would give her a run for her money!
Hey Mike. What a gorgeous day!! You should be in a t-shirt in this type of weather. The beach goers are doing it right. The JRB is a beautiful ship. WOW WOW WOW😯😯😯She has the greatest whistle(at least I think so)!!! I can't imagine what that must have felt like. I got goose bumps. So happy you were able to catch this. Karen, I’m not kidding, it shook my entire body. The bark is for real.
@@vibewithmike WOW. Sometimes being there in person is the best. But, I still honestly got goosebumps. She's the best!
It’s a great looking ship and the loudest
Most definitely!😊
👍
I can't help smiling every time I hear that whistle. And I live nowhere near navigable water.
Any regulations on decibels. Greetings from Sheboygan. Nicely done my friend 👏!
That’s an interesting question Kurt. I’m guessing the answer is no, there is no decibel level regulation because of planes and other loud noises around. However, if there is a decibel level regulation, let’s give the ships a pass.😂😂😂😂⛴️
@@vibewithmike I concur totally 👌. We've got enough issues in this country without worrying about a loud toot. This is safety for everyone involved 👏! Same as buying a house 🏠 next to train Trax!
100%
Let's face it....Duluth is ships, boats. Whatever you want to call them. They bring jobs, tourists, and a grand source of community pride. No local politician would ever regulate/support vessel noise laws. And if they did many captains would just hoist the Jolly Roger flag and blast away.
The crew of the JRB would have to testify!😂
Gives me shivers every time I hear the Barker Bark.
Probably everybody’s favorite whistle. I love it.
I just added visiting Duluth to see a Great Lakes freighter to my bucket list.
Keggycat! That’s so wonderful to hear. You will not be disappointed. Duluth has the ships, but there are so many other fun things in the city. Make sure you visit Duluth during summer months to increase the chances of good weather for you. All the best to you my friend!⛴️⛴️⛴️
I KNEW I RECOGNIZED THIS SHIP! I use to see it at the ports back home in Wilmington, Delaware and occasionally along the Delaware River in New Castle.
7:20 why do you think your audio of her horn starts loud with each blast but then mutes some?
I have a microphone that is specifically designed to cut out all wind. If I didn’t have that you would never be able to hear me and it would be extremely annoying because you’d be hearing wind gusts. There will never be wind, but it does have a sound canceling feature on it as well. That’s why there’s a little bit of a down tick after a loud noise is heard.
Wow that’s ear blasting beautiful!
My ears are still ringing!😂👋👊👍
Mike! Thanks. Love you enthusiasm. Did I spell the big word correctly? Take care.
Ha! Yes, you did! I’m glad that you wrote it because I probably couldn’t hear you right now!😂⛴️
Really appreciate this video! I'm curious about something regarding steam whistles; I understand the Barker is so equipped.
Can you actually see the whistle in operation? Sort of as if she were tipping her hat? I seem to recall seeing one doing that in another video.
Thank you!
Very very good question. The only steam whistle that I know that I actually see is on the ship, Alpena. Barker has horns that are similar to a train horn that I see installed on the top. I hope you take a few moments to take a look at this video. I posted it two days ago. I know you will enjoy it. th-cam.com/video/hGlUk_bds60/w-d-xo.htmlsi=StUJifhFRVVyjnre

It’s a good one for ships. I hope you’re doing great. ⛴️👍
Yo Mike, I thought it took 10 hours for the 1000 footers to self unload, but her horns had a new sound unless its what. NO, it had to have added big stage base speakers with 12000 w of power amplifying the horns.
Hey John! More like 200,000 watts! Here’s the eight hour source. www.trovestar.com/generic/zoom.php?id=165860#:~:text=Barker%20was%20the%20first%201000,cargo%20in%20about%20eight%20hours.
I moved up just below the Boulevard in Little Italy/Observation Park neighborhood a few years ago. When the leaves are off the trees, I can just see the top of the Bridge from my deck, but can’t really see the boats as they come in, so I took it upon myself to learn the boats by the sound of their whistles. Obviously, the JRB was the easiest. Lolol.
Gone! How cool my friend. I really would like to know, how well can you hear the JRB from there?
@@vibewithmike some days it sounds like the boats are right in my alley, other days, not so much. Same with music from Bayfront.

@@vibewithmike indeed. Spent last evening on the deck at Pier B/Silos with friends from the Cities, and it was perfect. All we saw was the Vista Star go under the bridge, though.
I love Silos! Excellent Caesar salad. Also, how can you beat the outdoor furniture and areas to sit? The best!
Loved it, many thanks.. 60,000 0dd tons.. wondered what the gross with vessel weight would be ?
COLREGS Annex III - being over 200m the RJB's 'whistle' is required to be at least 143 dB at 1m from the whistle, so it can be heard typically 2 nautical miles away. Of course, anyone standing 1m away would be instantly deafened
Under British rules, 4.46 seconds at 123 dB per day is the limit without hearing protection...
Boat friends, g8sqh shared some really cool information! Check it out here! ecolregs.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&layout=item&id=120&Itemid=501&lang=en
Most useful to boaters (apart from the various long/short patterns to say what's happening) is that deeper, lower frequency sound signal DOES mean a bigger vessel. It's a rough guide, but without AIS it's better than nothing.
I really like the information that you provided to all of us. Thank you so much.
I wonder what the Lakes are thinking when they feel A Whole Lotta Barkin' Goin' On!!!!
They feel like their in the dog pound
