⚓️Duluth Shocker: Elusive Ship's Unexpected Detour Captivates!

- The 730-foot ship "John D. Leitch" passed under the Aerial Lift Bridge as it arrived on 12/27/2023 from Lake Superior in Duluth, MN!
Boat Friends, this is the best night ship video I have ever recorded! First of all, this is one of the rarest ships to see in Duluth and I can't even recall the last time it was here before. Maybe a few years ago? Last night the John D. Leitch was out on Lake Superior heading for the ore docks in Superior, Wisconsin. Then, out of nowhere, the ship's AIS updated from Wisconsin to Duluth! This was super unexpected and absolutely shocking to think it was actually on its way to Duluth!
As you know, I have only seen and recorded this ship one time! I have never witnessed this ship arrive in Duluth in person. You can tell during the video how excited I am to finally see this ship in Duluth! The weather and lighting conditions for this night video were phenomenal, which adds to the reason why this is my personal favorite night ship video of all time!
What makes this ship so cool to all of us Great Lakes ship enthusiasts is the one-of-a-kind look! No other ship has this type of forward pilot house in the WORLD! It looks like the ultimate tough-working vessel with so many rugged features all over it!
As the ship was getting closer to Duluth's south and north pier I could see there were a lot of lights on the ship which made me happy! I didn't know what to expect, so it was awesome to see so many lights Illuminated on its deck.
As the ship made its way into the ship canal I described the history and details of this vessel to help you better understand it. I was able to zoom in on the pilot house, steering pole, smokestack, unloading boom, stern, bow, etc. Every single thing I could show you on this vessel I was indeed able to do it. The captain had the ship moving very slow which allowed me to get the most video and details as it went under the Aerial Lift Bridge.
Also, as an added bonus, this was the first time that I recorded a bow thruster being used by a Great Lakes ship as it arrived in Duluth! You could see the water splashing from the starboard side next to the bow. The ship was on its way to CN dock in Duluth to load iron ore pellets.
Even as I write this description, I can't stop thinking about how great this video turned out and how stunning it was to see this rare ship arrive in Duluth at night!

Great video! You should be proud of the progress you’ve made with the channel. The content keeps getting better and better.
It’s all about having fun! This is my hobby and I love it. I’m dedicated to my career in real life but this is my way to get away and relax. I enjoy so much doing the research on the ships and finding new ways to record them. It truly is a pleasure to record these videos for you and all of the Boat Friends!
Tyler Mac we can see the ship
@tylermcintyre1454 I wish you a happy start to 2024. I hope everything’s going great on a Saturday for you brother.
Hi Hi from Northern Wisconsin. Enjoy your video. Thanks
Well, hello my friend! It’s a pleasure meeting you. I hope you are doing well. Thank you for taking time out of your day to watch this ship video. Don’t forget to subscribe (it’s free) to this TH-cam channel and come back to watch more ships
Mike, you have outdone yourself. This was an absolutely amazing video. The water looked like glass. Everything aligned, great weather, great lighting, great ship and a great cameraman! Thank you so much!
Can you imagine how cool it would be to be up in that pilot house Brett? It is such a unique vessel. I love how it looks. I didn’t know what it would look like at night. I’ve never seen it at night. It took my breath away as it went by.
👍👍
@paultraynorbsc627 Paul, I definitely remember this one. This was a beautiful ship coming in. It was so marvelous.
Boat Friends the John G Munson & the John D Leiach
have a outstanding Cabin
together they are beautiful.
Beautiful !
It was amazing seeing this great ship
1000 footers are great, but the older ships are so much more majestic as they pass under the bridge, in my opinion! Thanks for the beautiful shot!
I think it’s cool that we have such a diverse mix of ships that come into Duluth. It really makes it fun for a ship watchers and Boat friends.
What amazing scenery you incorporate into your vids
I too, love the light post. Should Sherlock Holmes be lurking around Duluth? Lovely ship, Im so impressed when the ships owner makes a statement of how valuable they consider their shups by the regular maintenance. I love combining new experiences with relaxation and entertainment. How fortunate that you live in Duluth and have access to such a variety of interesting resources! Bless you Mike!
Duluth is such a beautiful place. It’s filled with rich history and obviously the ships. I still have pinched myself moments that I actually live here. I grew up in the big city of Minneapolis far away from ships and actually be in a place where my heart belongs really makes me happy, I know it’s a total blessing, the lake is absolutely beautiful. Thank you for your wonderful comment. Have a great Monday. God bless you and your family.
First view of the ship in the canal: Love the lower angle viewing the ship. It almost makes the ship look like it is riding on elevated water within the canal. Gives the ship a little look of majesty.
It’s funny that you say that, I felt the same way, it was sitting up way high out of the water
Beautiful!!!!!
First one here, The John D. Leitch actually made it into my fav. Laker list. She's gorgeous.
Hope you've been doing good Mike, an all Boat Friends.
Ghost! I can’t underscore of how awesome this video was to record and how it turned out. This is the most unique ship on the Great Lakes in my opinion. What a treat to catch this at night in this situation finally coming into Duluth.👍⛴️
Sorry but I beat you here. 🙃🤭
@@vibewithmike We should get a bunch of us together for a video one day lol.. it would make it even better.
@@Deb_L Aww.. Dang it.. Lol next time than 😎
@GhostSportsES at some point I think it would be really cool to do a community live stream at some point. We’ll have to figure out how this would go down, but I hear what you are saying.
Thanks for doing these videos! Duluth is one of my most favorite places on earth - great food and birding in the fall! Without these videos, I thought it only a myth that ships traveled in and out of this harbor.
Joe, happy Thursday! I really appreciate your comment. You’re giving me a lot of energy right now. It makes me happy knowing that you were happy. I love Duluth. I know what you mean. It is such a great place. I have a video for you to look at below, I really want you to watch it. I know you’ll think it’s cool. That was awesome! Fantastic video of a really unusual lake ship. I almost felt that I was there! 10 out of 10 :-)
Beautiful scenery Mike
The ship is awesome
Another excellent video ... thanks! What struck me was just how quiet the JDL moved through ...

New Boat Person from Australia. I am actually in the middle of the desert here in Alice Springs but luv ship watching. The Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge is amazing & the Lakers are humungus!! ❤❤
It is a pleasure meeting you. Look at that beautiful horse in your photo. What a gorgeous animal. Many people from Australia love watching ships. What a beautiful country that you live in my friend. I still haven’t been there, but I promise at some point I will get there. I love all of the videos and pictures I’ve seen of the countryside there. Wow! Absolutely very beautiful video and ship Mike! 👏👏😍
Very impressive ship and video. Thanks, Mike.
Thank you very much friend. The bonus for me is every time you leave a comment I get to see that cool vehicle.
Mike, that pier light pole/two globes you showed was very interesting looking. I found some pictures from 1905, and the lights back then were the same design as today. Its pretty neat they are maintaining this history!
I love that pier light. it looks so historic and old-school. I absolutely love them. It makes such a good backdrop to watch a ship with.
History is being maintained. @@vibewithmike
@chuckg6039 I’ll maintain it even further. At some point I’m going to take a beautiful photograph with that light and hang it on my wall.
Cool video. When I saw that ambulance cross the bridge, lights and sirens I got nostalgic. I went from sailor to paramedic. It was my final job
Much respect to all first responders!
Beautiful video

Outstanding video brother. You really capture the beauty of these magnificent ships. Cheers from St Louis
Duke! I really appreciate you taking a few minutes this evening to write that comment. It means a lot man. You know me, I just go out there and have some fun with these ships. I’m so glad that you enjoy seeing what’s going down in Duluth
This is awesome 👌 one of your best. 🤗
I’m glad you feel that way. I thought it was such a wonderful video after I got done editing. I love this ship so much.
What a wonderful and unique picture indeed. Seeing that old lamp post having the lift bridge as a back-drop. It's a picture that draws and captivates one attention in a moment of time! Now, to capture the sun, the moon or even a seagull, any bird within that picture, resting on the lamp post or in flight will be incredible. A picture of still-life that comes alive when seeing life there in wonderful, Duluth MN. A picture only to have happened in that moment in time. 🧐
Love seeing the reflections on the calm water. Would be a cool art project.
Seeing this video presentation at a time we see for ourselves, portrays a stillness not often captured to take one's attention in the way we see here. Stillness, a calmness with bright lights in the background that adds even more stillness, light not moving with the still calmness of water reflecting that light so still, enabling all to see this moment in Duluth MN. as this uniquely incredible ship, John D. Leitch is called to port. Another great video indeed! 🧐
This is such a wonderful and kind comment. Thank you so much John. I’m so glad you enjoyed this shit. It’s an incredible ship without it doubt
Another great video night with clouds, all the lights with the nearly flat channel and lake superior water. It is very nice.
People in the videos tell us how warm or cold it is in Duluth.
On the Pacific shore the ocean is never flat. There are always waves coming from thousands of miles away from the west.
Amazing !! 👀🛳

Wow what a beautiful Great ship just gliding along Wow
Mike this one is a 10 out of 10 too! It’s not just covering an event. It’s the way you narrate the story for us, and angles you film for us. Very cool. Thanks! That Captain must have known he was on camera too, he knew that water was flat calm and didn’t want to leave a wake to ruin the reflection! Just Awesome, thanks Mike!
Thanks Wally! Did you see the live today? th-cam.com/users/livexYI-9oQk8iA?si=HEVWlU4gC_4rXpKj
Silky smooth!
Lake superior was like a mirror for this ship
Great video Mike, excellent to see the JD Leitch. Thanks so much for sharing these videos

Love the reflection on the water
I enjoy seeing things through the water reflection
Another nice video, Mike! Very neat! Stay warm, have a happy and productive new year!! [Greetings from Tucson]
What a very nice thing to say. I love when you leave a comment so that I can think about Tucson. What a wonderful city. Thank you so much for watching this ship video friend.
The lake sure is unpredictable. The other day the waves were crazy and now its almost like a mirror. It seems so quiet. I like the light pole. Its probably very old! Given how long the bridge has been there its no surprise that they have though of everything including lighting! Very unique looking ship! Super high pilot house! It is not even disrupting the lake as it gracefully moves onwards! Thank you for sharing bro! 😀👌
Greetings from a chilly south Alabama
Wes, thank you so much for joining the live video premiere. How awesome was that ship? It was my favorite ship to record at night. I don’t think I have a better night ship video than this.
Awesome ship - and beautiful camera work!! Thanks, Mike!😀👍
Thank you, my friend, I’m glad that you enjoyed the ship, and all these beautiful views in Duluth and around the bridge
The lake is a lot calmer then the last video. I'm starting to look forward to your videos now see what you started thank you
Tony! It’s all about having some fun brother. You never know what’s coming. You do know there is a ship or weather. Those are the only two things I really cover.
Fantastic looking ship, amazing! What a beautiful night, wish I was there. 👍🙂❤
The water was so beautiful on top and calm for this beautiful ship that moves so slow for me to get all of this good footage. What a beautiful ship it was.
Great video Mike. Going to be passing through Duluth tomorrow on my way up to Orr MN. I don’t think safe ice Yet. Have a good night.
Safe travels, Dennis. No worries about ice because there’s all green grass and Duluth right now unbelievably. Thanks for watching this awesome ship.
I’ve only been a subscriber for a few months, but for me, this is the best video that I have seen. Very beautiful ship. Nice work, Mike!!!
Thank you for subscribing and thank you for the wonderful comment
Hi Mike, how are you doing, what a great sight that vessel the John D Leitch coming in to the harbour, with all the lights reflecting on the water, a great video Mike. 👍👍.
It was so awesome to see this ship moving slow to capture all of its beauty in this video
This ship looks incredible.❤️🚢❤️
I was never into this type of video until i found your channel. Great work.
Edit- I used to live in Crosby and would be in Duluth all the time.
What an absolutely cool comment. Mary thank you so much. That is so cool of you to say this. It’s funny, each ship has its own story with it. It’s almost like you get to know them. Again, thank you so much. I’m really glad that you’re enjoying the channel. Don’t miss this video from today. I know you’ll love it. ⚓️Duluth's 1949 Ship Sykes: 2023's Greatest Show!
th-cam.com/video/gUHOgeuhuko/w-d-xo.html
Awesome video Mike.
FYI the John D Leitch was named after the owner of Upper Lakes Shipping. Algoma acquired the fleet in 2011.
It is said John had a hand in all his ship builds. He was very involved in the Canadian Great Lakes trade, and would make a point of visiting all his ships. He once boarded one of his ships, and was upset the officer lounge had dated furniture. He ordered the furniture removed and ordered new furniture fit for an officer lounge.
Long live the memory of John
Look how calm the water is and the ship just glazing through it, that is so peaceful to watch ☺⛴⚓
That water was so calm and still. It reflected every light beam that was out there. It just said the stage so beautifully. The ship really looked fantastic Coming through as well.
Hello Mike, 52 in Richmond, Virginia.
Unbelievably, I must tell you that our temperature here in Duluth is not too far off which is crazy. It should be much colder. Thank you for watching this awesome ship come through Duluth for the first time this year.
The ships are beautiful at night.
I couldn’t ask for a more beautiful stage sent by Lake superior to see this elegant and unique ship
What an amazing vessel. Huge!!
That was such a fun video to record. Did you see the one from today with the big turbine blades? th-cam.com/video/H9XOHboR6ho/w-d-xo.htmlsi=CgtFI_UNc9qnEcyj
@vibewithmike yes, but haven't seen them off-load them yet. Not sure if you posted the off-load yet
@shabbymaverick7975 I didn’t get the offloaded, but I was able to get it coming in and going to the dock
One of the best Vids yet!!! Awesome!
The water reflections are awesome
I appreciate that, I always try to provide cool perspectives to allow us to see the ships in a new way
That’s the best
Thank you so much for watching this video. This ship is truly one of a kind.⛴️👍
When launched she was called the"little bank building that floats."
And regular subscriber "J" correctly pointed out a lack of a stern thruster. I verified this. Only a bow thruster is used.
I’m glad J confirmed that was a bow thruster. I thought it might be! Now we know.⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
HA! I was hoping you got the JDL again... I saw it was heading back to Duluth. So cool.
John, I could not be more excited when I saw AIS switch to Duluth. I was so excited to record this video. I don’t think I’ll be able to be happier with a night ship video than this.
@@vibewithmike The vid was awesome, my man! Well done!

Intriguing ship. Looks like a great video coming!
It was one of the funniest videos to record of a ship I’ve ever done
Great video!
Thank you, I really really enjoyed this ship. It was beautiful.
In my humble opinion, this was your best video yet, Mike. And the John D. Leitch is in my top 2 favorite boats and I really love how the captain went so slow through the canal. It definitely gave us a lot of time to admire her beauty. What an awesome ship.
I had fun recording this one
Wonderful video. Thank you!!!
Good evening Mike
As always, thank you so much for watching the video. This was a very special ship and video for me to record. It turned out so wonderful at night.
I have a picture of myself as a 6 yr old in 1967 when this ship was called the Canadian century on the Welland CanalI almost got another pic in Iroquois Ontario beside this ship as it went through the locks a couple years ago
Beautiful
What an awesome night video Mike. You never cease to amaze all of us boat friends. That light pole, you should blacken out the post and show it as two full moons with the night sky as back ground. Peace!
There’s something about that light pole Scott. Chuck told me that it’s the original light poles that they had from the early 1900s that they must’ve converted. That makes me feel even more attached to these polls. I can’t tell you how excited I was to record this ship and everything went the way I wanted it to and the ship looks so beautiful in person.
@@vibewithmikeYeap. Very good replicas.
Got to say, I am new at this ...I have been watching boats off of Pelee through the Pelee Passage and I instantly favoured 3 lakers..one of them being the most recognizable and likey to win 4th place at the beauty pageant....the John D Lietch!
It’s a stunning and totally different ship
Great ship, color is awesome
Awesome on the north side
Yeah, I had to go on the north pier for this one. I just felt there would be more lighting on that side so I could get more to look at with the ships even though south pier is cool where we can see the communication towers it’s a little darker over there.
Yippee can’t wait!
Deb! This is the most unique ship out on the Great Lakes. I can’t believe I finally recorded this arriving in Duluth. It was cool for me personally to see this ship in Duluth for the time! I’m glad I was able to share it with everybody!👍⛴️
@@vibewithmike It was really cool watching her come in last night. She’s beautiful. ❤️❤️
@Deb_L this was such an incredible ship to record in the best conditions at night
@@vibewithmike She looked mighty powerful that’s for sure. Loved the waves.🌊
Hey Mike! I stayed up and watched Wilfred Sykes come in last night and watched her leave this afternoon! Lake was gorgeous last night!!
Mike often denotes the 'water draft' which is the distance from the waterline to the bottom of the keel.
Well there is also an 'air draft'. It is the distance from the waterline to the highest part of the ship.
'Vertical clearance' is the distance in excess of the air draft that allows a vessel to pass safely under a bridge or object
More information about ‘Air Draft’ here. www.dco.uscg.mil/Portals/9/TVNCOE/Documents/SafetyAlerts/AirDraft.pdf?ver=2017-08-11-142836-740#:~:text=Air%20draft%20(draught)%20is%20a,under%20a%20bridge%20or%20object.

There was nothing like recording the ship at night. It’s my favorite video for a ship at night so far. The captain had the ship going slower than I’ve ever seen a ship going through the canal and I couldn’t record everything perfectly.👍⛴️

@@vibewithmike i have filmed the sky here at night to and i’m just speachless of it’s beauty🙏! And the great ship was, as always, a bonus👍!
Never heard of you, never seen your vids, not a spotter of or knowledgeable of ships. Your video came up on my feed, so I gave it a moment, then was held by your enthusiasm, bringing me along, guiding me to see with new eyes. I caught myself in a brief laugh your pat on my back, "Friends, could you ask for anything more?!" as the ship begins passing under the bridge.
And thanks also for the calm and the silence unmolested by fast edits and background music.

Wow must be your best video yet Mike .The reflections in the water were amazing and what a beautiful ship . Thanks
I still can’t believe how beautiful everything turned out in the video
Hello from Chicago
Chuck, how are you doing brother! Can you believe there’s no snow on the ground for either of us? It’s unbelievable right now. Those snow shovels haven’t been out. Thank you so much for watching this incredible ship that came through Duluth last night.
Mike, have you ever done a video of the other bridges Blotnick, etc? Thanks. Lee in NC
No, I have never done a video on that bridge. It’s just a bridge that connects Minnesota to Wisconsin.
How graceful, gliding through the water. Fantastic reflections of the lights in the calmness
What can I say? Just another fantastic effort. All the more so because it’s a night piece with some beautiful light conditions. Nice little walk around in the bargain. Loved it.
It’s always fun showing the area and what’s going on. I like setting the table just before the ship comes in.
What a beautiful combination of a gorgeous night sky, soft harbor lights, and a magnificent vessel gracefully passing through the channel! Do these freighters that sail on the upper Great Lakes ever make their way down to the lower two? I have a marine traffic app on my phone and often check out what ships are on Lake Erie or Lake Ontario (esp. if I’m near to the lakes and see one in the distance)- but I have not recognized any names of ships that I have seen passing through Duluth. (I hope that’s not a dumb question, but I am new to watching this channel).
This is an absolutely fantastic question! I’ll have to verify, but I believe these ships are able to get onto all five Great Lakes but the Welland Canal is another issue. Let me look into this or maybe someone else knows?
Beautiful night video, fantastic shots of the water. Well done. Thanks Mike
Ellen! It’s so fun capturing the reflections with the ship and bridge! I really enjoy finding cool things in the water to look at
looks very much like the Oglebay Norton Courtney Burton.
Ready for it
The ship was awesome to record
