"The Main Story is it's biggest weakness" ; in truth; the main plot often can become secondary to all the other stuff you can do but really optional stuff is what makes RPG's like this so fun to play. Even in BGII. Your ultimate goal was to stop Irenicius but no matter what there was no real urgency as you could go after him at anytime of your choosing. He was a well written character and one of the greatest RPG villains but the most fun to be had in BGII came from the sub quests be that killing a mighty dragon or destroying a beholder cult.
It's a different reviewer, as a result of the previous reviewer, Leif Johnson, having taken another job. If you were reviewing a game that you thought was better than the original, but the original had been scored by someone who had gone higher than you would've, would you inflate your score and say it's better than you think it is just to appear consistent with an opinion you don't agree with?
You should push IGN internally to drop numbered scores; it's an arbitrary number and I would bet the analytics would show that most people skip to the end of the article or video just to see the number, disregarding the actual praises/criticisms/review. Although, maybe that's why it is kept with that knowledge in mind
Depends on the time of release, and yes, 3 years is a long time. Tyranny by Obsidian was released, even Original Sins 2 was released some time ago, which was a masterpiece. He did not say " It was better" . He said "it was a step forward"
Yeah it's kinda emberassing that we live the revived era of classic-style rpgs (PoE series, Pathfinder, Black Geyser: Couriers of Darkness,...) and they employ people this guy. When there is so many enthusiastic ones to choose from.
The point of a reviewer is to have a consistent tone, view and opinion. That's how you can trust a reviewer, regardless of his actual view of the game. If you know the reviewer is more of an ARPG or FPS kind of person, then you can react accordingly to how they reviews games. IGN is a company, and they hire a multitude of reviewers to do whatever game comes out. Therefore, you have absolutely no clue about the preferences of the reviewer, and it's like you've drawn the lottery. My point is, IGN is too inconsistent with their reviewers. It's easy to see why people get upset to the point where IGN reviews are little more than jokes or memes at this point.
I'm genuinely curious how you got the impression that he hated it. He criticized the main story and the naval battles, yes, but everything else was glowingly positive.
A large amount of the review is spent going over the negatives of the game, and since the review is so short it seems as if the reviewer has little to say positively about the game. It has nothing to do with the amount of negative aspects. If there was just one negative pointed out in the review but over half of the review spent time talking about that one negative then that review would seem as if the reviewer disliked the game. I don’t understand how all of you are so focused on the “small” amount of negative points when there wasn’t many more positive points, if even any.
divinity original sin 2 was my first real game like this. you just have to commit, read everything, immerse yourself and fi you can do that they are in a class of their own.

you know what would be even better for the immersion on this game? dynamic 3D portraits from the 3D character we customized. and if you prefer the "oil paint" portrait style then put a stylized oil filter on top of the already dynamic rendered 3D portrait like when you use a oil filter on Photoshop. I'm pretty sure its easier and less time consuming to do then actually drawing tons of great looking portraits that don't match up with our 3D avatar.

Malice Mage Don't let this review unmotivate you. Obsidian is one of the top company that delivers excellent narratives in their games. They are really good at branching plots, and quests where your choices DO matter. These guys are the opposite of linear storylines, the choice is yours to play a true RPG that's loyal to its roots.
I put about 6 hours into the first game but it didnt hold my attention. This is the third major review (the other two being Worth a Buy and ACG) that have stated the the story is nothing short of awful, and I won't endure that for 40+ hours)
I played through PoE, but didn't really like it, but PoE2 is awesome, has much better quests, story and characters. The difference is like between Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2.

The fact people are complaining about a good review is the reason why reviews shouldn't be taken seriously. You'll have people whining about the most arbitrary things no matter what score you give a game.
